Maitland Jones Jr., a chemistry professor at New York University who also taught for four decades at Princeton, was fired in August after undergraduate students circulated a petition complaining that his course was too difficult.

Dozens of the college students, many of them aspiring doctors, signed on to the petition in the spring.

"We are very concerned about our scores, and find that they are not an accurate reflection of the time and effort put into this class," the petition read, according to the New York Times.

Higher education was rocked Tuesday by the federal indictment of almost 50 people including administrators, coaches and dozens of parents for their roles in offering and taking bribes to gain the fraudulent admission of students to elite colleges such as Stanford, Yale and Georgetown.

While the magnitude of criminality – bribes, tax evasion, fraud, and document falsification – was unprecedented, the apparent motive behind the parents' actions involves an obsession well-known to college admission officials: the desperate desire to have their son or daughter admitted to one of the nation’s elite colleges.

Admission to a top-shelf college has become the Holy Grail for many families who have bought into the notion that their children’s success in life will be all but guaranteed by graduating from an elite institution. Conversely, the failure to make it into an elite school is viewed with dread. Attending a “second-tier” college is feared as a failure that will predestinate a second-rate education, followed by a third-rate career.

What’s Next for Twitter: Layoffs, a Purge of Spam Accounts, and Trump’s Return

Elon Musk has decided he wants to own Twitter after months of twists, and users should brace for drastic changes for the platform.

On Tuesday, it was publicly revealed Musk has offered to end his court battle with Twitter (ticker: TWTR) and complete his acquisition of the social media company at the originally agreed upon price of $54.20 a share. Musk’s lawyers sent the proposal letter to Twitter a day earlier, and the company confirmed it has received it.

Assuming the transaction goes through, what will Twitter look like under Musk control? Using his prior comments—including 40 pages of text messages from court filings, here’s what I expect to happen at Twitter after the deal closes:

First, there will likely be a major overhaul of the management team and staff layoffs. Musk believes overall Twitter employee productivity has been lackluster. It’s easy to see why. After spending nearly $4 billion on research and development over the past five years, the company has little to show for it in terms of new successful offerings.

So it wouldn’t be surprising to see a large portion of Twitter’s employees (7,500 as of the end of 2021) pushed out of the company. Musk’s public and private comments also show a soured relationship with current Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal. It is likely the Musk will make himself the chief executive or bring in someone else.

Twitter couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

Second, expect a culling of spam accounts and a lighter touch in content moderation. Musk has said one the primary reasons Twitter needs to go private is a purging of fake users will make its metrics “look terrible,” which is difficult to do as a public company. He told Twitter’s CEO he would like to unwind permanent bans for everyone outside of spam accounts and those who explicitly promote violence. While some may argue ex-President Donald Trump fits one of those parameters, Musk has said the ban “was morally wrong and flat out stupid.”

Third, a complete revamp of Twitter’s app features will begin. In May at The All-In Summit 2022 conference, Musk explained how WeChat in China was a good model for Twitter. He envisioned a similar all encompassing app for Western markets that had a comprehensive payments capability, advanced messaging features and a revenue share for content creators, along with an easy-to-use interface.

That is the end goal for the entrepreneur. To transform Twitter into a WeChat for the Western world. Texts with venture capitalists show the billionaire has already started recruiting software engineers for Twitter to make his vision a reality.

One thing is for sure. A Twitter owned by Musk won’t be boring.

EU agrees to impose price cap for Russian oil – Politico

The bloc promised “concessions” to overcome opposition from Malta, Greece and Cyprus

The EU has reached a tentative deal to impose a price cap on the sale of Russian oil to third countries, Politico Europe reported on Tuesday citing diplomatic sources. Cyprus, Greece and Malta had concerns about the potential impact on their shipping industry, but were reportedly promised concessions.

The price cap is part of the eighth round of anti-Russian sanctions, which Brussels is expected to roll out this week, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

EU ambassadors reached an agreement on Tuesday and expect to approve the final text on Wednesday, Politico reported citing seven diplomats – all of whom wished to remain anonymous. Details of the sanctions still need to be confirmed in writing, and there was a “limited” chance the deal could still unravel, one source reportedly said.

The three Mediterranean members were reportedly concerned about the impact of the measure on their commercial shipping, but Brussels offered “concessions” in the form of a “monitoring system” that would propose measures to mitigate the impact of the embargo, in case of "significant loss of business" due to practices such as reflagging of commercial vessels.

The EU has already banned the import of coal from Russia, with an oil embargo scheduled to go into effect in December. The price cap seeks to block Moscow’s petroleum exports to third countries using EU-registered vessels, as the bloc has already sanctioned all Russian shipping.

Meanwhile, Hungary said it had secured assurances the price cap won’t apply to oil delivered through pipelines.

Anti-Russian measures adopted by the US and its allies have led to a spike in oil price, leaving Russia with more revenue from exports than before the embargo. The price cap proposed by the G7 seeks to neutralize this. According to the proposal, EU vessels will refuse to carry Russian oil if it is priced above the cap, the value of which has yet to be determined.

The sanctions have also resulted in the EU facing severe energy shortages. However, the bloc’s leaders have vowed to support Ukraine indefinitely and no matter what. (The insanity is bizarre, if Russia had to go back to an agrarian society, they would still survive)

Moscow has made it clearit will not comply with the price cap scheme, with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak warning that Russia will simply refuse to sell fuel to countries that seek to enforce or abide by it.

Rock legend says he’s on Ukrainian ‘kill list’

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters claims he’s been targeted for “liquidation” after urging Kiev to make peace with Russia

British rock star Roger Waters, a co-founder of Pink Floyd, has allegedly been placed on a Ukrainian “kill list” after speaking out against Western military meddling and calling on Kiev to make peace with Russia.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Tuesday, the 79-year-old pushed back against accusations that he’s been repeating Russian talking points about the conflict in Ukraine. “Don’t forget, I’m on a kill list that is supported by the Ukrainian government. I’m on the fuing list, and they’ve killed people recently… When they kill you, they write ‘liquidated’ across your picture. Well, I’m one of those fuing pictures.”

Waters gave the example of Darya Dugina, the Russian journalist murdered in August after appearing on the Ukrainian Mirotvorets list. As the musician noted, her entry on the list was marked “liquidated” after she was killed in a car-bombing. Others who have questioned or criticized the Kiev regime, such as photojournalists Andrea Rocchelli of Italy and Andrei Stenin of Russia, have also been killed after appearing on the Mirotvorets list. The site lists personal information on its blacklist targets, which also include politicians and NGO activists.

Mirotvorets, or “Peacemaker,” is an independent database of individuals whom anonymous moderators consider to be threatsto Ukrainian national security. The site denies being a kill list; rather, it claims to be a source of information for law-enforcement agencies and “special services” about pro-Russian terrorists, separatists and war criminals, among others. It allegedly has links to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry.

Waters stirred backlash earlier this year, when he suggested that US President Joe Biden was a “war criminal” for fueling the Ukraine crisis and sent an open letter to the wife of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, urging her to help “stop the slaughter” by pushing for a negotiated peace deal with Russia. He later sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking for guarantees that Russia wouldn’t expand beyond Crimea and the Donbass region.

Pressed by Rolling Stone on why he isn’t supportive of Ukraine’s resistance against Russian forces, Waters said, “Because it’s an unnecessary war, and those people should not be dying. And Russia should not have been encouraged to invade Ukraine.” He also dismissed reports of Russian war crimes in Ukraine as Western propaganda.

The wide-ranging Mirotvorets kill list also includes Faina Savenkova, a 13-year-old girlin the Lugansk People’s Republic who called for the United Nations to end the fighting that has dragged on in her region since 2014.

WASHINGTON — The founding mayor of Sanibel, Fla., fled his waterfront island home so quickly last Wednesday as Hurricane Ian approached that he left his computer on and the refrigerator full.

“We left that fast,” said Porter J. Goss, better known in Washington as a former 15-year congressman from Southwest Florida, a fixture on the House Intelligence Committee and the former director of the C.I.A. But Mr. Goss, now 83, got his start in politics in the 1970s as a leader in the successful effort to incorporate Sanibel to hold off beach-hungry developers, eventually becoming its first mayor.

He is now worried about the future of the fragile island cut off from vehicle traffic by a collapsed causeway, as well as what comes next for him and his wife, Mariel, who evacuated to a farm they own in Virginia. They are uncertain what happened to their Florida home and possessions in the maelstrom of a near direct hit from the storm.

“Everything is down there,” Mr. Goss said in an interview. “I’m literally sitting up here wondering what is next.”

The story of Mr. Goss’s ties to now devastated Sanibel is a bit of a beach blanket-and-dagger saga. After intelligence careers with the C.I.A. in Cold War Europe and elsewhere, Mr. Goss and two fellow ex-spies settled in Sanibel, where Mr. Goss took advantage of the sun and sand to recuperate from a serious illness that brought his clandestine career to an end.

Using their professional know-how, the men founded a local newspaper, The Island Reporter. Fearing the island would become overbuilt, they set out to incorporate Sanibel into a village to gain more control over land use, hoping to preserve the unique characteristics of the sanctuary-like environment.

“We have an awful lot of rules and protections for natural resources,” Mr. Goss said. “It is very much an outdoor-oriented, family-type vacation place.”

Its popularity, along with newcomers trying to escape Covid, was already testing the limits of the island, noted Mr. Goss, who said Ian was a rare storm that exceeded its billing for hurricane-savvy residents of Sanibel.

“For once, the hype on the storm wasn’t as great as the storm,” he said. “It was the other way around. This turned out to be pretty incredible. It really caught a lot of people sort of flat-footed.”

Since fleeing with his wife, dog and their overnight bags before the bridge was closed down, Mr. Goss has tried to assess the damage to their house — a yellow pine and cypress structure built on stilts atop “many, many pilings” — from aerial photos. He said that the exterior damage does not look bad, but that the question was whether water flowed through the storm-fortified front door.

He takes some credit for imposing strong building standards on Sanibel after he and other city officials visited Dauphin Island, Ala., following a severe strike there by Hurricane Frederic in 1979.

“We saw what survived and what didn’t, and I learned a lot about foundation structures and first-floor elevations,” he said. “We brought that information back and put it in the code. If you are looking at Sanibel compared to Fort Myers, we came out a whole lot better because we’ve got a lot better building codes.” 1/2

The US rap star has stirred controversy by criticizing BLM and donning a “White Lives Matter” shirt

Kanye West, the US rap star known for courting controversy and making money, has stoked a new wave of outrage, accusing Black Lives Matter of being a “scam” after he provoked online pushback by wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt.

“Everyone knows that Black Lives Matter was a scam,” the 45-year-old entrepreneur said on Tuesday in a since-deleted Instagram post. “Now it’s over. You’re welcome.”

The statement was apparently a response to criticism that West received after wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt on Monday at his Yeezy fashion show in Paris. The show showcased Yeezy’s new clothing line and featured models wearing shirts emblazoned with the controversial counter-BLM slogan. For good measure, West was photographed alongside black conservative firebrand Candace Owens wearing matching shirts with “White Lives Matter” printed on the back and a picture of the Pope shown on the front.

“Kanye West decision to wear a ‘White Lives Matter’ shirt is disgusting, dangerous and irresponsible,” black author and professor Marc Lamont Hill said on Twitter. “Some of y’all will rush to defend him. You should ask yourselves why.”

Rapper Jaden Smith, son of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, walked out of West’s fashion show in protest. “True leaders lead,”Smith said. “I don’t care who it is. If I don’t feel the message, I’m out. Black lives matter.”

BLM has been plagued by financial scandals. For instance, the new leader of the national BLM not-for-profit organization, Shalomyah Bowers, was accused in a lawsuit of siphoning off more than $10 million in donor fees to pay his consulting firm. BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors went on a real estate buying binge last year, purchasing four homes for a combined $3.2 million. She also was accused of paying her brother and her child’s father more than $1.8 million combined for providing services to BLM. The group received more than $90 million in donations in 2020.

West, who now goes by the name “Ye,” ranks as the world’s richest rapper with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $2 billion, based largely on his Yeezy fashion brand. He has frequently generated controversy, such as when he visited then-President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in 2018 and said in an interview that same year that slavery was a “choice” for black Americans.

Planned Parenthood Pimps Puberty Blockers In Cartoon Aimed At Kids

The cartoon was shared on Twitter on Monday by an account named “Inside the Classroom” (@EITCofficial) — which was originally started to provide “real evidence against the claims of the left’s narrative that CRT isn’t being taught and children are not being indoctrinated.”

“Puberty blocker ad put out by Planned Parenthood, which tells children that they can get puberty blockers to ‘put their puberty on hold,'” the caption read.

The text of the ad explains that puberty is different for everyone — and then held up puberty-blocking drugs as a “solution” for teens who felt that their puberty experience did not match up with their gender identity.

“There is no one size fits all puberty experience,” the caption read on the video. “If you’re trans, intersex, or non-binary, know that you’re not the only one feeling confused.”

“For some intersex people, puberty may start later than age 14,” the ad’s audio continued. “You might experience some of puberty’s changes and not others. And your body may or may not go through puberty on its own.”

“There are medicines you can take to help your body start the process. Like hormone replacement therapy,” the cartoon added. “Some people decide on hormones or surgeries to help their bodies match up to their gender identities or how they feel inside about themselves,” it said. “Your gender identity is real. You should be the one to decide what changes you want to make to your body.”

“If you’re transgender or nonbinary, you may find that your puberty experiences don’t line up with your gender identity. That feeling can be uncomfortable, scary, and stressful. If that sounds like you, know that you’re not alone.”

The cartoon then pivoted to promote puberty blockers, saying that they were a viable alternative to going through the process naturally.

“There are medicines you can take to delay puberty for awhile,” it said. “And they work like a stop sign, by holding the hormones testosterone and estrogen that cause puberty changes like facial hair growth and periods. Puberty blockers are safe and can give you more time to figure out what feels right for you, your body, and your gender identity.”

And while a 2021 report from The New York Times — titled “What Are Puberty Blockers?” — concurred with the Planned Parenthood ad that puberty blockers provide teens and their families with “more time” to decide whether they plan to seek further medical intervention, it also noted that there were still questions as to whether the drugs would have any impact on fertility later in life.

The ad — which comes amid numerous reports of schools attempting to help students hide their gender identities from their parents — concluded by suggesting that teens who still have questions should consider talking to a “trusted adult, doctor, or nurse.”

US debt surpasses $31 trillion

The national debt has increased by $3.37 trillion since President Joe Biden took office

The US national debt has officially exceeded $31 trillion for the first time in history, the Treasury Department confirmed on Tuesday.

The US government owed a total of 31 trillion, 123 billion, 887 million, 781 thousand, 401 dollars and 34 cents as of October 3, according to publicly released Treasury figures.

At the moment of President Joe Biden’s inauguration, in January 2021, the debt stood at $27,750 trillion, according to the Congressional Research Service.

“It was $21 trillion just five years ago,”Congressman Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, lamented on Twitter after the news broke.

The national debt stood at $19.94 trillion when President Donald Trump took office in 2017, but exploded over the past several years as the Federal Reserve printed money to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of the debt is held by private individuals, to the tune of $24 trillion, while debts to foreign governments amount to almost $7 trillion. Much of the world indirectly subsidizes the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

OPERATION RODEO: 65 Fugitives From Southern NJ Arrested in Massive Sweep: US Marshals

Camden, NJ – The U.S. Marshals Service has conducted a high-impact fugitive apprehension initiative focusing on some of the most violent offenders throughout the southern counties of New Jersey. This three-week enforcement initiative, called “Operation Rodeo”, resulted in the arrest of 65 fugitives, including 33 gang members (largely Bloods members, but also Crips, Pagans, and lesser known gangs), and other violent criminals in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Louisiana, Florida, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. These fugitives were wanted out of Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, and Camden Counties, as well as other states but were located in these four counties.

“Once again Deputy U.S. Marshals from the District of New Jersey, the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, our state, county, local, and federal, partners combined efforts to locate and capture dangerous fugitives throughout the state of New Jersey all in an effort to maintain a safer community,” said U.S. Marshal Juan Mattos, Jr.

During “Operation Rodeo” the District of New Jersey and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force used its multi-jurisdictional investigative authority and fugitive task force network to arrest fugitives wanted on charges including homicide, sex assault, aggravated assault, robbery, carjacking, weapons violations, felony narcotics distribution, burglary, arson, failure to register as a sex offender, and other felonies. In addition, investigators seized four firearms, $3,015 in currency, and various illegal narcotics. Among the 65 fugitives arrested were:

Alexion Mercado, 28, was wanted for attempted murder in Camden County since 2019. He was located and arrested on Sept. 12 by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was literally taken into custody on the beach and was in possession of a Glock .40 caliber pistol and five extended magazines at the time of arrest.

Tyshone Carter, 28, was wanted for a September homicide in Philadelphia. He was located and arrested on Sept. 16 in Cherry Hill hiding under a child’s bed.

Male Juvenile, 16, was wanted in Camden County for aggravated assault since August. He was located and arrested on Sept. 9 in Lindenwold and was in possession of a “ghost gun” handgun at the time of arrest.

Jason Johnson, 50, was wanted in Salem County on a 20-year-old warrant issued in 2002 for illegal firearms possession. He was located and arrested in Monroe, Louisiana, on Sept. 6.

Tajjir Buckhannon, 25, was wanted in Camden County for a shooting which occurred in early September. He was located and arrested on Sept. 15 in Camden.

This year, the District of New Jersey and New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force have conducted several successful area specific sweep initiatives which resulted in the location and arrest of hundreds of wanted fugitives throughout the state.

“Deputy U.S. Marshals continuously work to collaborate on operations with our state, county, local, and federal partners, by conducting strategic enforcement endeavors to maintain safer communities,” said Mattos.

In another Senate race, in Nevada, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto trails Republican Adam Laxalt by 2 points in the Real Clear Politics polling average.

The Murdoch funder is for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to Reuters. The president plans to attend an earlier event at the home of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

James Murdoch put $100 million in his nonprofit Quadrivium foundation, which made substantial donations during the 2020 election cycle. They also gave millions to groups supporting Biden, opposing Donald Trump, and fighting extremism.

Murdoch told the Financial Times days after the Capitol attack that has featured in Biden's speeches: 'The damage is profound.'
