US to announce new $1.1 bln arms package to Ukraine, includes HIMARS

In a report released on Monday, Reuters cited unnamed American officials that disclosed that while Washington is keeping a close eye on the results of the referendums in eastern Ukraine, a new $1.1 billion fund will be announced soon by the US administration for a new package of weapons designated to Ukraine.

The report comes less than a day after the results of the referenda on the accession of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia, have been announced on Tuesday by Moscow, stating that the results will be decided upon on October the 4th.

NATO countries condemned the referenda, according to a statement revealed last Thursday.

According to the sources, the new arms aid will include technical support and training, several types of drones and radar systems, as well as HIMAR systems with their ammunition and other spare parts.

The new fund will be allocated from the USAI - Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative - which provides Biden with the ability to purchase the arms supplies directly from the industry providers rather than US military weapons stocks.

This report comes a few days after the US announced $457.5 million “in funding for Ukrainian law enforcement," not to mention billions for immediate military supplies to Ukrainian nationals.

Since the start of the war, the US has given Ukraine $15.8 billion for "security assistance", which includes a package worth $600 million in early September. Additionally, the White House asked Congress for $13.7 billion for "security and economic assistance" for Ukraine.

The US has not only been giving money and arms to Ukraine, as a senior official in the US Department of Defense said earlier this month that his country was closely engaged with Ukraine's armed forces ahead of their Kharkov counteroffensive, providing Kiev's military with intelligence in the buildup to the operation.

Israeli Elbit cybersecurity breach in US targets 369 employees

Elbit America, the US branch of the Israeli arms manufacturing contractor Elbit, reported a cyber-security breach and stressed that sensitive personal data was likely stolen.

The contractor specializing in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also noted, in a notification to the authorities in Maine earlier in September, according to TechCrunch, that 369 employees were impacted by the June cyber-attack.

“On June 8, 2022, someone attempted to interfere with Elbit America’s cyber operations. We immediately shut down our network and took steps to secure our environment,” the company said in a letter addressed to employees potentially affected by the hack.

Following the attack, Elbit hired a “leading cybersecurity firm” to investigate the incident. According to Elbit, investigations concluded that “an unknown actor gained access to and obtained certain data” from its network, including “individuals’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, direct deposit information, and ethnicity.”

The business provided little other insight on the cyberattack, but stated that it did not believe any personal data had been "misused as a result of this incident."

Although cybersecurity blogger Eduard Kovacs noted that a ransomware gang known as "Black Basta" boasted of an attack on Elbit Systems in late June, not long after the business claims it was compromised, the Texas-based subsidiary did not name any actors believed to have carried out the operation. Payroll records and a non-disclosure agreement were allegedly among the stolen data the group, Black Basta, uploaded at the time on its website.

Elbit is headquartered in "Israel," and its primary business is drone technology, however, it has dabbled in the surveillance market through a series of acquisitions.

Researchers at Citizen Lab discovered that starting in 2016, a Cyberbit subsidiary of Elbit created malware that was used to surveil Ethiopian dissidents in the US, the UK, and other countries.

Elbit eventually sold the majority of its Cyberbit shares, and by 2020, it retained a minority holding.

Human rights organizations have condemned Elbit for its participation in providing the Israeli occupation forces with attack, reconnaissance, and spy drones in addition to the Cyberbit incident. In July, activists attacked a British factory in Shenstone that produced UAV engines for Elbit, allegedly causing the facility thousands of dollars worth of damage in response to deadly Israeli incursions in the occupied West Bank.

In July, Palestine Action confirmed via a press release on its website that its “activists took action today seeking to dismantle an industry built on occupation, dispossession, and warfare across the globe”.

Elbit has supplied drone technology to a wide range of nations, including the United States, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Georgia, and the Philippines in addition to "Israel's" own occupation forces.

ABOARD USS KEARSARGE (AP) — U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge is taking part in international training in the Baltic Sea amid Russia’s war in Ukraine and tensions in the region.

The Kearsarge is the first ship of the Wasp class to take part in international training in the Baltic in at least two decades. Associated Press journalists visited the ship last week.

“It’s a first off for us in recent memory and it’s been very exciting,” said Capt. Tom Foster, the commanding officer of the Kearsarge.

With some other U.S. Navy ships, the Kearsarge has been training for several months with the militaries of Sweden and Finland, which formally applied to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

The training mission is to promote safety and security in the region.

“In the past several months, we have been operating in the Baltics and in the Mediterranean,” said Capt. Aaron Kelley, commander of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group.

The actor died Friday in Etobicoke, Ontario, according to his obituary.

No cause of death was shared. His sister Stephanie told The Hollywood Reporter he died of injuries suffered in a fall.

Cormier played Finn Cotter on "Heartland" and also appeared in the American TV show “Designated Survivor” in 2016, the series “Slasher” in 2019, and “American Gods” in 2021, according to IMDb.

The show "Heartland" shared a tribute to Cormier on social media, calling him "a beloved member of the Heartland cast the last two seasons."

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Robert Cormier,” the statement said. "On behalf of the Heartland cast and crew, our thoughts are with him and his family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time.”

UPtv, which airs the show, also paid tribute to the actor, remembering him as “an amazing talent, gone too soon.”

“We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing. Our sincere condolences go out to his friends, family, and co-workers,” the network said, sharing a photo of him and co-star Amber Marshall.

Cormier was described as an “athlete, an actor and a great brother” in his obituary.

“He had a passion for helping others and was always looking to achieve more. He enjoyed movie nights with his family, and looked up greatly to his father," it said. "He impacted many people throughout his life whether it was family, teammates and friends."

"Rob’s memory will live on through his passion for art and film; as well as his three sisters who meant the world to him," the obituary said.

Taliban signs deal to buy Russian gas, wheat, oil products: Reuters

Reuters reported on Tuesday that the Taliban signed an agreement with Russia to supply gasoline, diesel, gas, and wheat to Afghanistan, according to Acting Afghan Commerce and Industry Minister Haji Nooruddin Azizi.

According to Azizi, his Commerce and Industry Ministry mobilized considerable efforts to diversify its trading partners. Russia had previously proposed a discount to the Taliban on average global commodity prices.

This comes as the Taliban's inked its first known major international economic deal coming back to power more than a year ago. It is hoped that it may help to ease the Islamist movement's isolation that has effectively cut it off from the global banking system.

Both the Taliban and Russia maintained diplomatic relations despite the incident that happened at the Russian Embassy in Kabul on September 5.

Besides economic cooperation, Russia has been diplomatically supportive of Afghanistan in its request from the US to have frozen assets returned.

Since reclaiming power in the country in August 2021, the Taliban movement has been battling a local chapter of IS-K, which is believed to be responsible for the majority of terrorist attacks and bomb explosions in Afghanistan.

It has also been demanding that the US returns frozen assets to alleviate the negative effects of previous years of economic isolation.

On September 17, huge rallies were held across Kabul to protest the US recent announcement to transfer part of Afghanistan's national reserves to a trust fund in Switzerland, calling for the full release of assets.

The Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in August of last year after an incredibly chaotic withdrawal of US troops and the end of the US occupation of the country.

Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro said his province will not participate in any attempts to seize firearms the federal government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently prohibited, including so-called “assault rifles.”

Justice Minister Shandro explained that he did not want to see the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Alberta go around confiscating firearms after claiming to have received a letter from the federal minister of public safety Marc Mendicino asking for resources to aid in confiscation efforts set to begin in the Autumn.

“Alberta taxpayers pay over $750 million per year for the RCMP and we will not tolerate taking officers off the streets in order to confiscate the property of law-abiding firearms owners,” Shandro said, the CBC reports.

The expected seizures of firearms originate from May of 2020 when the Trudeau government prohibited 1,500 different kinds of firearms from being either sold or used in Canada, all of which were supposed “assault-style firearms.”

However, closer examination of the firearms on the ban list revealed that many of the guns on the list were not even self-loading semi-automatic guns but bolt-action rifles that have been used by hunters and sportsmen for over a century, while others were variants of the AR-15 platform.

The 2020 ban came in the wake of a deadly mass shooting and arson rampage in Nova Scotia by Gabriel Wortman, who put on the uniform of a police officer and drove a fake RCMP cruiser while going on a killing spree before he was shot dead by police. Investigations later revealed that Wortman’s firearms had been illegally acquired, however, and smuggled across the US border.

Earlier this year, Trudeau went even further, looking to ban the sale and transfer of all handguns in Canada, with minister of public safety Mendicino arguing the ban would combat gun violence in the country.

A UFO mysteriously appeared on a US intelligence agency's logo in what officials later suggested had been a mistake.

The flying saucer was spotted on the new seal of the National Intelligence Manager-Aviation (NIM-Aviation], the main air element of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

A spokesman said someone had “erroneously posted an unofficial and incorrect logo", indicating that it may have been an internal prank.

NIM-Aviation works to assess potential security threats from the air.

It was involved in the compilation of a report to Congress last year on research into UFOs, which are referred to by the Pentagon as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs).

The altered logo also featured a Russian Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet and a triangular-shaped aerial vehicle, all flying over a map of the United States.

The flying saucer was first noticed by a UFO enthusiast who posted about it on Twitter.

The caller claimed to be a reporter from the Washington Post, though Dingell did not recognize his name. But he sounded an awful lot like Trump, and the quotes never appeared in a Washington Post story.

That’s according to a Post review of Confidence Man, a new book by New York Times reporter and Trump chronicler Maggie Haberman.

“The man asked Dingell if she was looking for an apology from Trump,” Haberman writes. “No, she replied, merely that people could be civil to one another. As the man talked, Dingell couldn’t shake the idea that his voice sounded like that of the forty-fifth president.”

It’s not far-fetched. Starting in the 1980s, Trump used the alias “John Bannon” to lie to reporters about his wealth, and following a lawsuit, Trump admitted as much, testifying under oath in 1990 that “I believe on occasion I used that name.” (Also, Trump’s 16-year-old son is named Barron.)

The new book details other strange claims, including that Trump had to be dissuaded from bombing Mexican drug labs and that Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s husband warned Hillary Clinton that Russians might try to poison Clinton through a handshake with Trump during the 2016 debates.

A Trump spokesman denied the allegations to the Washington Post. “While coastal elites obsess over boring books chock full of anonymously-sourced fairytales, America is a nation in decline,” Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich told the Post. “President Trump is focused on Saving America, and there’s nothing the Fake News can do about it.”

Hmmm, that sure sounds like something Trump would say.

Former NSA Director Keith Alexander struck a deal with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in early 2018 and the cyber institute led by one of his closest aides, Saud Al-Qahtani, to assist the Saudi ruler in training the next generation of Saudi hackers to take on the Kingdom's adversaries, according to a report by The Intercept.

While the agreement between Alexander's IronNet and the cyber school was widely reported at the time in intelligence industry outlets and the Saudi press, it received no scrutiny for its association with AL-Qahtani, despite the murder of Jamal Khashoggi that he allegedly orchestrated just a few months later.

According to an announcement made in early July, Alexander officially signed the agreement with the Prince Mohammed bin Salman College of Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, and Advanced Technologies — a school established to train Saudi cyber intelligence agents — at a signing ceremony in Washington, DC.

Al-Qahtani’s proxy at the signing noted in a statement that “the strategic agreement will ensure [Saudi Arabia is] benefiting from the experience of an advisory team comprising senior officers who had held senior positions in the Cyber Command of the US Department of Defense.”

Alexander's for-profit cyber security firm IronNet would collaborate closely with the Saudi Federation of Cybersecurity, Programming, and Drones, a college affiliate dedicated to offensive cyber operations and overseen at the time by Al-Qahtani.

Saudi Arabia’s agreement with IronNet was part of a host of moves to step up its cyber capabilities, coinciding with a campaign against the Kingdom’s critics abroad.

Khashoggi received a series of threatening messages, one of which was from Al-Qahtani, warning him to remain silent. Khashoggi was lured to the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul after his family and close associates discovered listening malware electronically implanted on their smartphones.

The United States is "ready" to help European allies after leaks erupted from the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines carrying Russian gas to western Europe, a senior White House official said Tuesday.

"I'm not going to speculate on the cause, and I know our European partners are investigating. We stand ready to provide support to their efforts," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"This just drives home the importance of our efforts to work together to get alternative gas supplies to Europe and to support efforts to reduce gas consumption and accelerate true energy independence by moving to a clean energy economy."

Earlier today, Denmark's maritime traffic agency and Sweden's Maritime Authority reported a "dangerous" gas leak in the Baltic Sea close to the route of the inactive Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which experienced an unexplained drop in pressure.

The leak, southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, "is dangerous for maritime traffic" and "navigation is prohibited within a five nautical mile radius of the reported position," the agency warned in a notice to ships.

Authorities in Germany, where the undersea pipeline from Russia makes land, said the energy link had experienced a drop in pressure, while its operator suggested that a leak may be the reason.

Nord Stream 2's operator mentioned pressure in the pipeline dropped from 105 to seven bars overnight.

Later, reports revealed that the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN) reported powerful underwater explosions in the area of gas leaks from the Nord Stream pipeline.

SNSN Director Bjorn Lund said as quoted by SVT that "there are no doubts that these were explosions."

“One explosion had a magnitude of 2.3 and was registered by dozens of monitoring stations in southern Sweden,” he stated. “You can clearly see the waves bounce from the bottom to the surface," Lund added.

The State Department labels Nord Stream 2 executives as 'foreign persons'

Beltway firms lobbying for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline have dodged foreign lobbying laws, even though the Biden administration has affirmed that the company behind the project has engaged in sanctionable activity that serves the Kremlin's geopolitical interests.

BGR Group and Roberti Global, two prominent Washington, D.C., consulting firms, have taken in nearly $9 million lobbying for Nord Stream 2 AG, the Swiss company building the pipeline. McLarty Inbound has received $2.6 million in fees from five private European companies that have loaned billions to Nord Stream 2. The company is based in Switzerland but wholly owned by Gazprom, a Russian gas company controlled by the Russian government.

Lobbyists for Nord Stream 2 have come under renewed scrutiny after theBiden administration waived sanctions that would have halted construction of the 764-mile pipeline,which will transport gas directly from Russia to Germany. Biden administration officials have defended the controversial waiver, saying they do not want to harm relations with Germany by imposing sanctions to block construction on the pipeline.

Sources tell the Washington Free Beacon that Nord Stream 2's lobbyists should still have to register as agents under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

"Lobbying Congress for a Russian geopolitical power grab is pretty much the definition of why FARA was created, so Americans would know who was pushing foreign interests," said a Republican national security veteran who works on the Nord Stream 2 issue. The Republican was baffled that the pro-pipeline lobbyists have escaped FARA registration.

The companies disclose their revenue through the Lobbying Disclosure Act, which is far less stringent than FARA. Lobbyists can be exempt from filing under FARA if their activities involve "bona fide commercial activity" that does not primarily serve a foreign interest.

But the State Department affirmed language in Protecting Europe's Energy Security Act (PEESA), a sanctions bill passed by Congress, that said Nord Stream 2 AG and its chief executive are "foreign persons" who engaged in sanctionable activity.

The term is significant for FARA, which requires agents to register for any work they do for foreign governments, companies, or individuals to influence public policy. The State Department has also called the pipeline a "Russian geopolitical project" that threatens European energy security.

"If this is in fact, as [Biden officials] call it, a foreign influence operation, anyone working on behalf of this ought to at least have to register under FARA," said Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, an expert at the Project on Government Oversight, a watchdog Group that supports tougher foreign agent regulations.

"[FARA's] intended to shine a light on people trying to wield foreign influence over U.S. policy in general," he said.

According to some ancient legends, the spirits of above and below worlds fight there, sometimes quite actively during eruptions of this enormous volcano in California, USA. Such drama can well be imagined in this deep sky image taken in late June. Evident above the snow-covered peak is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, on the left, and a picturesque sky toward the modern constellations of Scorpius and Ophiuchus, above and to the right. The bright orange star Antares and the colorful rho Ophiuchi cloud complex are visible just to the right of Mount Shasta, while the red emission nebula surrounding the star zeta Ophiuchi appears on the top right. The static earth image in the featured composite was taken during the blue hour, while a two-panel panorama tracking the background sky was taken later that night with the same camera and from the same location. CNN’s Jake Tapper ripped the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on Tuesday after they ran an ad that he says took his words out of context.

Tapper reported last Wednesday about Michigan republican congressional candidate John Gibbs, who is backed by former President Donald Trump.

“Get this, a congressional candidate supported by Donald Trump, by the way, whose past writings and associations indicate that he is against women voting,” Tapper said. “We’re talking about John Gibbs. You might remember him because with some financial support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, with ads, that thought he would be an easier candidate to beat.”

The DCCC used Tapper’s clip for an ad in support of Democratic candidate Hillary Scholten but omitted Tapper’s final sentence on the DCCC actually funding, in part, Gibbs’ campaign.

“We took part of the segment and running an edited version on Twitter,” Tapper said. “They posted the part where I noted Gibbs previous opposition to women voting but cut out he part the DCCC contributed to the Gibbs’ campaign by funding ads. First I’ll play what aired on ‘The Lead’ and then play how the DCC edited out my words to hide the role theyplayed in boosting him.”

Tapper then played both ads, showing how the DCCC omitted the last sentence.

“We just wanted to set the record straight since apparently the DCCC cannot be counted on to do so,” Tapper said Tuesday after displaying the misleading ad.

Gibbs primaries incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer, a Republican who voted to impeach Trump. Democrats have been funneling money into congressional campaigns to help unseat moderate Republicans who they believe would be harder to beat in the general election. The DCCC paid $435,000 in TV ads to boost Gibbs, with Meijer losing the primary to Gibbs.

Truss, Kwarteng grapple over sterling crisis response: Sources

The first signs of disagreement between Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng over how to deal with the falling pound have emerged to the surface, after the pair met in No 10 on Monday to discuss ways to respond.

Simultaneously, Downing Street denied that there was a schism between No 10 and No 11 over how to deal with the market reaction to the mini-budget.

However, Whitehall sources reportedly said there was talk within the civil service of a dispute between the Prime Minister and Chancellor during the meeting on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Sky News reported that Truss had been resisting Kwarteng's proposal that a Treasury statement was needed to ease the markets.

A Downing Street source stressed it was "nonsense" that Nos. 10 and 11 were at odds during the meeting, adding that Truss meets Kwarteng every day and there was no argument.

However, another government source contradicted that, admitting that there was friction during the encounter.

Conservative MPs are still enraged about the budget, which has caused the pound to fall to a record low against the dollar at times since Friday.

At least one Tory MP is thought to have already submitted a letter to the 1922 Committee expressing dissatisfaction with Truss, with talk among backbenchers of trying to oust her if she does not change her economic course.

Tory whips were calling MPs on Tuesday to reassure them that they would vote for the upcoming finance bill, and Kwarteng held a call with backbenchers to explain his plans in greater detail.

To reassure investors, the Treasury issued a statement late Monday afternoon stating that it would commission a forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility and hold another fiscal event in mid-November.

It is worth noting that both Nos. 10 and 11 devised the mini-budget on Friday, which included £45 billion in tax cuts, but the market reaction has been harsh, with the pound hitting a new historical low and gilt yields - the cost of government borrowing - mounting.

NATO member wants ‘devastating’ retaliation against Russia

The bloc’s response to any use of WMDs by Moscow in Ukraine must not be nuclear, but still massive, Poland’s foreign minister says

NATO’s response to any use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine must be“devastating” but only employ conventional arms, as Moscow’s threat is not directed at the bloc, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau has said.

“To the best of our knowledge, Putin is threatening to use tactical nuclear weapons on Ukrainian soil, not to attack NATO, which means that NATO should respond in a conventional way,” Rau claimed during his Wednesday’s appearance on NBC News program Meet the Press.

“But the response should be devastating. And I suppose this is the clear message that the NATO alliance is sending to Russia right now,”the minister pointed out.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that “the consequences would be horrific” for Russian if it uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine, adding that this message has already been communicated to the Russian leadership publicly and privately.

The warning followed an address by Vladimir Putin a week ago, in which he announced partial mobilization in Russia and slammed “some senior officials in NATO states” for suggesting that deploying nuclear weapons against Russia was justified.

The President made it clear that such a move won’t be left unanswered by Russia, reminding that it has its own arsenal of destructive weapons, some of which surpass their Western-counterparts. “If the territorial integrity of our nation is threatened, we will certainly use all the means that we have to defend Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff,” Putin stated.

Over the past week, the US and allies have increased intelligence gathering and surveillance over concerns that signs that Russia decides to deploy nukes could “come too late,” Politico reported on Tuesday.

According to US officials, who talked to the outlet, air, space and cyberspace monitoring of Russian units in Ukraine that could potentially receive the nuclear order from the Kremlin has been stepped up, with special attention also being paid to Russia’s western exclave of Kaliningrad.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov reiterated last week that “we are not threatening anyone with nuclear weapons.” He referred the journalists to the Russian military doctrine, which states that nuclear weapons may only be employed if such arms or other weapons of mass destruction are being targeted at the country or its being faced with an existential threat from conventional arms.
