You and your doppelgänger – someone who looks just like you, but is actually a stranger — may actually have similar DNA, according to a new study. Researchers in Spain used photographs by Canadian artist François Brunelle, who has taken pictures of lookalikes around the world since 1999, in the study.

Photos of 16 pairs of people who look alike were used to measure just how similar the pairs of people look using three different facial recognition algorithms.

"In the case of many look-alike, the three software gave the same results: they were unable to distinguish the faces, they were virtual twins!" Manel Esteller, senior author of the study, said in an email to CBS News.

Yuan bonds to debut on the Russian market

Russia plans to return to local bond sales after a six-month pause, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. Also, the Kremlin reportedly wants Chinese yuan-denominated debt to help the Russian market recover.

The report highlighted that ruble bonds could likely be back on the market in the second half of September. Meanwhile, the report added, the debut of yuan bonds on the Russian market won’t happen until next year.

“A long-mulled plan to debut Chinese currency notes locally is being dusted off with fresh urgency as yuan trading volumes surge after sanctions shut Russia out of its traditional markets in the US and Europe,” an unnamed source said.

Trading volumes between the Chinese currency and the Russian ruble have grown 40-fold since the start of the year, as per Bloomberg data.

“With hundreds of millions of dollars coming into government coffers from energy revenue each day, the government has no need to borrow now, and sales of yuan debt would serve solely as a benchmark for companies looking to tap the market,” the source was quoted as saying.

Russia’s biggest gold miner, Polyus and aluminum giant Rusal International have already started transacting in the yuan, according to reports.

The Chinese foreign ministry told TASS in March that it did not rule out the possibility of using rubles or yuans in energy commerce with Russia.

When asked if China is ready to use rubles or yuans for Russian energy sources instead of the US dollar, the ministry responded by saying "Market players are free to choose the currency in bilateral settlements," adding that "the use of own national currencies in the process of regular trade and economic cooperation may help avoid currency risks and reduce losses stemming from currency exchange."

According to Beijing, Chinese enterprises want to utilize rubles or yuans in commerce with Russia on an equitable and mutually advantageous basis, taking market developments into consideration. "Naturally, we will use currency of other countries due to various considerations," the ministry said.

The number of school shootings in the United States has been exponentially rising as of late, surging to reach 193 documented incidents during the last academic year. However, while different organizations use different techniques to classify and define a “mass shooting”, the firearm homicide rate in the United States reached its highest level since 1994 during the first year of the Covid pandemic, with significant racial and class disparities, according to a CDC report released Tuesday.

The latest school shooting to shake the United States took place in late May when an 18-year-old boy carried out a mass shooting that claimed the lives of at least 21 people at an elementary school in Texas. He used two weapons, which include an AR15-style automatic rifle. The recent spree of tragic shootings in the US has pushed guns to the forefront of a national debate as US leaders grapple with how to reduce the alarming rate of violence, with the latest today in Detroit that left four people injured and three dead.

Graham predicts ‘riots in the Street’ if Trump is persecuted

US Senator Lindsey Graham warned on Sunday of "riots in the streets" if former US President Trump faces charges over his handling of documents found when the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago home.

Graham made the volatile prediction during an interview with Fox News' Sunday Night in America host and former congressman Trey Gowdy, stressing, “If there’s a prosecution of Donald Trump for mishandling classified information, after the Clinton debacle… there’ll be riots in the streets.”

The former president is being investigated for possible violations of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice, according to an unsealed warrant.

An accompanying affidavit, which was heavily redacted, stated that the "government is conducting a criminal investigation concerning the improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized spaces, as well as the unlawful concealment or removal of government records," and that there is "probable cause to believe that evidence of obstruction will be found."

Trump claims to have declassified all of the documents at Mar-a-Lago and has denied any wrongdoing.

"The DOJ and FBI are engaging in Election Interference at the highest and most dishonest level our country has ever seen," he posted on Truth Social on Sunday.

According to the source, as cited by the newspaper, the UK is running out of weapons and financial contributions for Ukraine, which means that the new UK Prime Minister will face the question of whether to make billions of pounds of additional support at a time when public finances are under strain.

The Times reported that UK citizens are starting to realize the scale of sacrifices they have to make for the sake of Kiev and fear surging gas prices in the country.

In April, Russia voiced protest to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had previously warned that all cargo that contains arms deliveries for Ukraine could become a target for Russia, while Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that providing Kiev with Western arms did not contribute to the resolution of the Ukraine conflict and would only have negative consequences.

Britain still providing Ukraine with military & financial support

On Wednesday, outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrived in Ukraine and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where Johnson announced the UK’s next major package of military aid to Ukraine, including unmanned surveillance and anti-tank loitering munitions.

In a tweet, Downing Street announced that "the UK is providing the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a £54 million package of 2,000 state-of-the-art drones and loitering munitions."

It is noteworthy that on June 30, the British government announced that the UK will provide another £1 billion ($1.2 billion) of military support to Ukraine against the backdrop of NATO's claims of Russia being Western security's biggest "direct threat".

According to the government, the money will go to boosting Ukraine's military strength, including air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, new electronic warfare equipment, and thousands of pieces of equipment.

In May, the UK said it will be providing £1.3 billion ($1.6 billion) in military support to Ukraine, taking the total British military aid to £3.8 billion ($4.6 billion) this year.

In April, Johnson pledged to supply his Ukrainian ally Zelensky with more military equipment, namely 120 armored vehicles and an additional $500 million in World Bank loans.

Percentage of Britons supporting anti-Russia sanctions fell due to price hikes

In a similar context, The Times newspaper highlighted that the British support for imposing new sanctions against Russia has declined, amid the sharp rise in electricity and energy bills and the cost of living caused by the imposed sanctions.

In March, polls conducted by YouGov showed that 48% of respondents supported imposing new sanctions on Moscow even if they had to pay more for electricity, while 38% were against it.

However, a recent poll revealed that 38% of the respondents now support imposing anti-Russia sanctions, while 45% oppose them.

The poll also showed that 42% of the respondents support imposing new sanctions on Russia even if this leads to an increase in the cost of living, while 42% oppose this step.

"Months ahead are going to be tough"

Earlier, outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that "the months ahead are going to be tough, perhaps very tough. Our energy bills are going to be eye-watering."

According to Britain's Office for National Statistics, in June, the country was left without Russian energy carriers for the first time since 1997 due to anti-Russia sanctions.

In the same context, Britain's energy regulator Ofgem has announced an 80% increase in the maximum electricity bill allowed to consumers, starting from 1 October, due to rising global energy prices. Thus, the maximum bill for Brits could grow by 80% or £1,578.

It was reported on Monday that the Presidential Palace in Baghdad, Iraq was breached, and that the US embassy was reportedly evacuated. Helicopters could be seen on the roof of the embassy.

Muqtada al Sadr announced on Monday that he was leaving politics, spurring Shiites to riot and breach the presidential palace. Al Sadr is their biggest political leader in Iraq and once led militias during the war. “I hereby announce my final withdrawal,” al-Sadr said.

A riot broke out inside the Presidential Palace as people stormed in and law enforcement attempted to hold them back.

US embassy employees could be seen leaving the embassy, and evacuating the Green Zone, via helicopter.

It was in the wake of this announcement that al Sadr’s supporters stormed the palace, which is inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone containing government buildings. Barriers were pulled down under the force of hundreds of people who used ropes to breach the barricades.

Once inside, they “rushed into its lavish salons and marbled halls, a key meeting place for Iraqi heads of state and foreign dignitaries,” Al Jazeera reports….

Iran and Russia have been warming up in relations, with reports in July revealing that Iran had become Russia's top customer in purchasing Russian wheat with 360,000 metric tonnes in deliveries according to data-intelligence company Kpler.

This month, Russia launched an Iranian satellite into space, as a part of Iran's space program, which is coming to success.

The two countries' close collaboration comes against a backdrop of targeted and comprehensive sanctions waged by the West against them, which has prompted closer cooperation in the long run. The US-led world order has only polarized alliances further.

The closer cooperation will ameliorate the aggressive impacts of the West-led sanctions on the two countries by locating new markets for their products and boosting military cooperation. Recently, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called the ties a "profound threat".

Furthermore, bilateral trade has risen 10% between the two countries this year - in 2021, according to Russia, bilateral trade increased 80% higher, reaching $4 billion.

With food and military cooperation on the rise, there is also carpet and clothing trade with frequent Russian customers, doubling since February and now making up half the customer base.

Iran is also selling clothes to Russian buyers, replacing Western brands and automotive spare parts to Russian car makers.

Earlier this month, the Iranian Finance Ministry's banking and insurance department said Iran could join the Russian Mir payment system within months of when talks between Tehran and Moscow reach a conclusion - this, according to Qorban Eskandari, the department's head, could be in the very near future.

Last month, authorities in the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that they will soon begin to accept Mir cards for transactions. The development in economic relations came during rising reports that Tehran and Moscow were working on expanding economic relations to combat US sanctions.

On July 23, Iran's Currency Exchange (ICE) launched a currency pairing system that enables exporters and importers to make payments in both the Iranian rial and the Russian ruble.

In July, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov highlighted that "Iran is an important partner of Russia, relations are of a friendly nature, have a long history, and are developing very effectively in the widest range of areas. Both sides have plans to bring bilateral cooperation to a new level — the level of strategic partnership. A new interstate agreement is being prepared.”

In other words, Ushakov said that Russia and Iran have plans to elevate their relations to the level of a strategic partnership and that a new deal is being drafted.

Last February, Russian banks were excluded from the SWIFT interbank payment system by the decision of the European Commission and its allies. The maneuver was intended to hit the country's banking network and its access to funds via SWIFT, which is pivotal for the smooth transaction of money worldwide.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters are demonstrating outside a hotel in Basel, Switzerland, where a large event marking the 125th anniversary of the "First Zionist Congress" is held by the "World Zionist Organization."

The demonstrators were waving Palestinian flags and signs against Israeli aggression on a bridge located just across the Messe hotel, which is currently under Swiss police protection.

The conference was said to witness the flocking of over 1,000 Zionist leaders from around the world in time for the event, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The anniversary is viewed by Zionists as an important event that led to the establishment of the Israeli entity in 1948.

The demonstrations were planned by BDS - the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement - in Basel in opposition to the anniversary event.

According to Swiss BDS on Facebook, “This commemorative political event, supported by the Basel government and secured by a massive police and military presence, affirms the supremacy of right-wing organizations over the importance and history of Zionism."

“We once again urge the Basel government to withdraw from any involvement in the Zionism celebrations and to end any cooperation with official Israeli institutions and state representatives."

“Along with the WZO, this anniversary is also organized by an organization that plays an important role in illegal settlement building and systematic expropriation of Palestinian land."

“The history of violence of Zionism is denied at the celebration,” the Facebook post said, adding that “the colonial character of the Zionist occupation in Palestine is obscured and, in continuity with the Zionists of the time, the mere existence of Palestinians made their suffering invisible.”

According to the Swiss BDS website, in a demonstration against the Israeli event, two major events were supposed to take place: The first was Saturday evening where a “panel discussion on Palestine will relate to the critical contributions to the situation in Palestine,” and the second was supposed to be Sunday afternoon in protest against the "Zionist Congress" events.

“To this day, Israel is characterized by countless laws and practices that discriminate against the Palestinian population. The expulsion of the Palestinian population from more and more parts of the country continues unabated,” the group wrote.

“The Basel government ignores the criticism, instead boasting of Basel's importance to Zionism and Israel and welcoming Israeli President Isaac Herzog with open arms,” Swiss BDS said, concluding that “we once again urge the Basel government to withdraw from any involvement in the Zionism celebrations and to end any cooperation with official Israeli institutions and state representatives.”

Talks on Russian gas alternatives fruitless: Bavarian PM

Negotiations with foreign partners have not yet helped Germany to find an alternative to Russian gas, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soder said on Sunday.

"Visits that were made previously — to Qatar, Norway, Canada — did not help to find a replacement," Soder told German broadcaster ZDF.

The politician mentioned that "when it comes to energy, we are transferring to Russia more money than before."

In response to the special operation in Ukraine, Western countries have rolled out a comprehensive sanctions campaign aimed, in particular, at Russian energy resources.

French President Emmanuel Macron has had to adopt a variety of strategies, from hosting MBS in his home country to visiting former french colony Algeria to discuss diversifying energy supplies.

Other countries, such as Greece have likewise opted for a similar strategy of turning to the Gulf for alternatives.

Countries that have opposed the ban on Russian gas are Hungary and Georgia which recognized the imprudence of the sanctions on Russia.

On August 8, it was reported that millions of German lower-income households will find it hard to pay their energy bills this winter amid a sharp rise in gas prices, according to Lukas Ievenkotten, head of the German Renters' Association.

Germany has also issued recommendations weeks ago to slow or halt the consumption of gas in order to stock up for the coming winter.

On August 16, German Economy and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck lamented the entirety of the country's business model, dismissing it as reliant on cheap energy imports from Russia that will never return.

Two days ago, it was reported that for the first time since March, the gas futures in Europe top $3,500 per thousand cubic meters.

At the beginning, central bankers wanted to keep a very low profile and complete anonymity for their activities. An Italian, Raffaelle Pilotti, was the Secretary-General, a Swedish, Per Jacobssen, was the Bank’s economic advisor; and other employees were British.

Since the time that Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933 and to the end of World War II in 1945, five German members of the board of directors of the BIS were Nazis. After World War II they were convicted of war crimes. These BIS directors were the following:

· Hjalmar Schacht, who was the architect of the economic recovery of Germany and served as the Reichsbank President until 1939.

· Hermann Schmitz, the Chief Executive Officer of IG Farben, a gigantic German chemical conglomerate that during the war built and ran a factory of synthetic rubber using prisoners as slave laborers at the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

· Walther Funk, who replaced Hjalmar Schacht at the Reichsbank and who was a member of the Nazi party since 1931. He worked for the SS Chief Himmeler.

· Baron Kurt von Schröder, the owner of the J.H.Stein Bank, a bank that held the deposits of the Gestapo.

· Emil Puhl, who was vice president of the Reichsbank bank.

During the Nuremberg trials that followed the end of World War II, 104 Germans were sentenced to death or to prison terms. Those who received terms in prison included four of the five directors of the BIS. Hermann Schmitz was sentenced to four years. Walther Funk, who had worked with Himmler, the SS chief, to ensure that gold and valuables from the Jews at the concentration camps were credited to a special account at the Reichsbank, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Baron Kurt von Schröder was tried by a German court for crimes against humanity and sentenced to three months in prison. Emil Puhl was sentenced to five years. As for Hjalmar Schacht, he was found guilty but then he was acquitted since he had been sympathetic to the Allies in the early years of the war.

After the war during the Bretton Woods conference held in New Hampshire in July 1944, Norway proposed the liquidation of the BIS at the earliest possible moment for assisting Nazi Germany to deposit the stolen gold from the occupied nations that it had conquered in the bank. The liquidation of the bank was supported by other European delegates as well as the United States delegates who included Harry Dexter White and the Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau. However, the liquidation of the bank was never actually undertaken. In April 1945, the new United States President Harry S. Truman and the British government suspended the dissolution of the bank. The decision to liquidate the BIS was officially reversed in 1948.

In a press conference held on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of his presidency, Raisi added that his government succeeded during the past six months in reducing inflation from 60% to 40%, noting, that they "no longer suffer from problems related to the stock of basic goods and commodities."

He explained that over the past year, the level of trade exchange increased at least four times, pointing out that "the level of Iranian exports indicates a lack of recognition of the embargo measures."

Raisi added, "We no longer suffer from power shortage, and we are carrying out projects to increase power production," noting that "Khorasan no longer suffers from a gas shortage, and the water shortage issue in the province has also been resolved."

The Iranian President continued, "We paid the debts of the previous government, and despite the budget deficit, the salaries of employees were not delayed even for a day."

Raisi confirmed that negotiations are ongoing to release some of his country's frozen assets, stressing that "the US embargo measures are unjust and must end quickly."

Regarding his country's participation in the Shanghai Organization, Raisi said that this helps Tehran obtain its share of the regional economy, noting that "Iran's membership in the Shanghai Organization is very important for the country."

He stated that signing Iran's membership documents to the Shanghai Organization will take place in the next meeting in Samarkand, adding, "We are determined to strengthen relations with China in various fields."

Raisi confirmed the continuation of developing relations with neighboring countries and emphasized the necessity of dialogue with them, without "any foreign interference", commenting that the US presence in the region "threatens security and stability."

During his speech, the Iranian President announced that he will not meet with his US counterpart Joe Biden, because such a meeting "is not in the interest of the Iranian people."

Regarding his country's nuclear energy program, Raisi said, "Our peaceful nuclear capability is our right, and no one can obstruct Iran from preserving this right," adding that "the Zionist entity never wanted it [Iran] to obtain the technology, but it got it against their will."

He stressed that "all the Zionist entity's threats and measures will be helpless in stopping our path, and the entity is aware that it is unable to confront us; its threats reflect its fear," advising "Israel" not to launch any aggression because it "may no longer exist [as a result]."

He added that "the normalization of some regimes with the Zionist entity will not provide them with security, and it is a betrayal of the oppressed Palestinian people and their resistance."

As for the armistice in Yemen, Raisi said, "We support any ceasefire that preserves the security of Yemen and the interests of its people and allows them to decide their fate."
