Deutsche Bank Offices Raided By Police On Money Laundering Concerns

It looks as though Chief Executive Christian Sewing could actually be making an attempt to clean things up at Deutsche Bank, after years of regulatory issues at the bank. In fact, Deutsche Bank headquarters is reportedly being searched at this moment as part of an ongoing money laundering case that it appears the bank tipped off regulators to.

The bank's offices in Frankfurt are being searched by law enforcement authorities "after the lender flagged potential money laundering," Bloomberg wrote on Friday morning.

The raid includes officials from the Frankfurt prosecutors office and Germany's BKA federal police, the report continues. The searches are taking place following the decision by a Frankfurt court, the report says.

Additionally, representatives of financial regulator BaFin were also involved in the search, Reuters reported.

Deutsche Bank said in a statement that the search relates to “reports made by the bank of suspected money laundering" and the bank said it is "cooperation [sic] fully with authorities". Reuters confirmed that the search was due to a tip from the bank, stating "the search involved suspicious transactions it had itself passed on to authorities".

"Police officers are present in and around Deutsche Bank’s Frankfurt headquarters", Bloomberg confirmed Friday morning. However, one witness told Reuters "there was no sign of authorities outside the bank's headquarters on Friday".

Deutsche Bank made the following statement:

"This is an investigative measure by the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office in connection with suspicious activity reports filed by the bank. Deutsche Bank is fully cooperating with the authorities."

Meanwhile, Deutsche has been under the microscope for potential money laundering for years, facing nearly $700 million in fines for trades that authorities said were used to illegally launder money.

The World Needs a Pandemic Protection Team

Even after Covid-19, there is no global agency tasked with detecting and responding to the next disease outbreak.Bill Gateshas a plan to create one.

In season 3 of the TV show “24”—a show I really liked—a terrorist intentionally releases a pathogen in Los Angeles. Word gets to practically every government entity in no time. The hotel where the release took place is immediately sealed off. A computer modeling genius figures out not only how the disease will spread, but how quickly news of the disease will get around and (the best part) how bad traffic will get as people flee the city. I remember watching those episodes and thinking, “Wow, that government sure knew how to prepare.” It made for great TV, and of course we could all sleep better at night if things really worked that way.

Many organizations work hard to respond to a major outbreak, but their efforts largely depend on volunteers.

But they don’t. Although there are many organizations that work hard to respond to a major outbreak, their efforts largely depend on volunteers. Regional and national response teams are understaffed and underfunded, and none of them has a mandate from the international community to work globally. The only organization that sort of has that mandate, the World Health Organization (WHO), has very little funding and almost no personnel dedicated to pandemics, relying instead on the mostly volunteer Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN). There is no organization with the size, scope, resources and responsibility that are essential for detecting and responding to outbreaks and preventing them from becoming pandemics.

Let’s consider the sequence of events that are involved in an effective response to an outbreak. Sick people have to go to a clinic and the health workers there have to diagnose them properly. Those cases must get reported up the chain, and an analyst has to notice an unusual cluster of cases with similar suspicious symptoms or test results. A microbiologist must get samples of the pathogen and determine whether it’s something we’ve seen before. A geneticist may need to map its genome. Epidemiologists have to understand how transmissible and severe the disease is. Community leaders need to get, and share, accurate information. Quarantines might need to be put in place and enforced. Scientists need to get cracking on diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines. And, just as firefighters run drills when they’re not putting out a blaze, all of these groups need to have practiced, testing the system to find the weak spots and fix them.

Bits and pieces of what you’d want in a monitor-and-respond system exist. I’ve met people who have dedicated their lives to this work, and many put their lives on the line for it. But Covid did not happen because there were too few smart, compassionate people trying to prevent it. Covid happened because the world hasn’t created an environment in which smart, compassionate people can make the most of their skills as part of a strong, well-prepared system.

So the bird site basically has been largely focused on what the CEO of Tesla buying it means for free speech and bots.

Something else caught my eye in the press release announcing the transaction. In a statement, Musk said, “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by … authenticating all humans.”

Does this mean Musk wants to get rid of anonymous accounts entirely? And how would this work in practice?

It seems that “authenticate” here would have to mean collecting some form of personally identifiable information (PII). If it’s as simple as checking a box or filling out a captcha, that doesn’t seem so bad.

It’s another story altogether if “authentication” extends to checking a license or passport or credit card to verify that there is a real human on the other end of the keyboard.

The implications of Twitter, which has suffered cybersecurity breaches in the recent past, collecting PII are troubling. In particular, a large number of Twitter’s users remain pseudonymous or anonymous for various reasons, ranging from just wanting to troll or harass people to having credible fears of posting under their actual identities. As reporter Melissa Chan points out, governments interested in identifying dissidents or activists may try to leverage influence over Musk in ways they could not influence Twitter itself.

A lot of folks may also just not have access to the kinds of IDs that might be needed. This authentication solution would have to account for these individuals.

Musk is known for disliking bots and their potential role on social media, and it would make sense for him to focus on that specific issue (and it is for sure an issue). Authenticating accounts is one way of addressing that.

On the other hand, he also has said he wants to make open source the algorithms that drive Twitter. In and of itself, this won’t change too much – Musk has not committed to making the data that Twitter’s algorithms use to drive their decision-making process public, and that’s probably where the real digital gold lies. On the other hand, it’s hard to reconcile “clamp down on bots” with “here’s the source code.” “Open-source apps usually are easier to make bots for,” says someone I know.

New York Times reporter David Enrich said Broeksmit provided the FBI with bank documents when the agency was doing a probe of Deutsche Bank in 2019. Broeksmit was also subpoenaed by the House Intelligence Committee during its probe of Trump's ties to the bank, ABC10 News reported.

Scott Stedman, an investigative journalist with the website Forensic News, wrote on Twitter that the last time he had spoken with Broeksmit was in January.

'He supplied me and other journalists with Deutsche Bank documents that highlighted the bank's deep Russian connection.'

This assessment of the entire situation by Dr Meryl Nass holds together quite well, though I think it’s over optimistic.

Nice to see a more upbeat assessment, though.

My own take is that the perpetrators wouldn’t attempt a global coup d’etat unless they believed they had a near-certain chance of success. Why? Well, getting halfway only means that there’d be a lamppost style ending risk. Not attractive, seen from their standpoint.

However, my assumption is only reasonable if “do nothing” was viable for them. I don’t know if that was true or not. If “do nothing” wasn’t tolerable for any reason, maybe they had to attempt this?

It does look like the c19 vaccines are safe & effective lie is finally coming apart.

That doesn’t mean that the general public are going to be enlightened. Those who committed themselves fully to the narrative will probably remain adherent to it, because admitting they have been fooled isn’t going to be tolerable.

I still see substantial risks that we have to face, any or all of which could be used to force mandatory digital ID.

1. Food shortages are coming. Experts like Iceage Farmer have been sounding the alarm for a considerable period. There’s no hiding from this. I don’t know what’s best to do about this. But it’s a major concern, not only for the fact of it, but mostly because it’s a wholly manufactured shortage. What kind of cold hearted psychopaths arrange for a substantial shortfall of the food supply? I envisage this crisis is going to be used to force rationing, even martial law. The requirement for digital ID if you want to receive rations seems likely.

2. Alternatively or more likely in addition an economic crisis, perhaps even a collapse is unfortunately very likely. It’s no good comparing similar outlooks from the past & examining what happened, because on this occasion again, it’s been made to happen. The perpetrators are still pushing to wreck the economy & currency. Inflation is here & could become a wrecking ball all on its own. Again, rationing from the inability to pay end is quite possible. On top, specific problems with petrol & diesel supplies are anticipated. How far will the cost problem translate into a supply problem, I’ve no skills to assess.

I continue to maintain that the best way to weaken the hand of the perpetrators is to communicate to as many people as possible that they’ve been lied to & all this stress & destruction is wholly deliberate. It’s a hard sell, I don’t doubt. True, though!

Valentin Broeksmit, an informant who worked with federal authorities investigating former President Trump’s relationship with the German financial giant Deutsche Bank, was found dead Monday on a high school campus in the El Sereno neighborhood.

Broeksmit, 46, was reported missing by friends and family a year ago, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was last seen driving a red 2020 Mini Cooper around 4 p.m. on April 6, 2021, on Riverside Drive at Griffith Park. His car was found, but Broeksmit remained missing — until Monday, when the L.A. County coroner’s office identified his body.

Cleaning crews at Woodrow Wilson High School found Broeksmit’s body just before 7 a.m., according to Sgt. Rudy Perez with the Los Angeles School Police Department.

Perez said classes resumed while investigators isolated the scene. Broeksmit appeared to be homeless, according to Perez.

The coroner’s office did not reveal a cause of death pending an investigation.

There was no evidence of foul play or unusual circumstances, according to Capt. Kenneth Cabrera with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Broeksmit, the son of Deutsche Bank executive Bill Broeksmit, handed off a trove of confidential documents to federal authorities who were investigating the troubled financial institution, according to a 2019 profile in the New York Times. His father had killed himself in 2014, and Valentin Broeksmit went on to share his father’s files with numerous journalists and government investigators, including a trip to an FBI office in Los Angeles, the newspaper reported.

Forensic News Network journalist Scott Stedman said he was one of the journalists who received documents from Broeksmit, which highlighted the bank’s “deep Russia connections.” Broeksmit was reported missing in 2021, but Stedman said they talked in January.

“It is very sad,” Stedman wrote on Twitter. “I don’t suspect foul play. Val struggled with drugs on and off.”

Broeksmit was born in Ukraine and adopted by Bill Broeksmit, his mother’s second husband, according to the New York Times. As an adult, Valentin had a history of opioid abuse and was a member of an unsuccessful rock band. He referred to himself on Twitter as a “comically terrible spy.” The U.S. House Intelligence Committee subpoenaed him numerous times during its examination of Deutsche Bank and its relationship with Trump.
