Why it matters: The U.S. has already seized million of dollars in assets from wealthy Russians with close ties to President Vladimir Putin. It and other governments are hoping that financial pressure on those individuals will translate into political pressure on Putin, potentially curtailing his power.

- The proposal comes after the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to urge the Biden administration to liquidate the seized assets to help Ukraine.

This is just straightforward, unabashed, naked piracy.

The Biden regime carried out another similar act of piracy last year by seizing an Iranian oil tanker and selling off its over 2 million barrels of oil for $110 million.

An Obama judge will not allow Hillary Clinton’s tweet claiming Trump colluded with Russia to be admitted as evidence in Michael Sussmann’s trial.

As previously reported, Special Prosecutor John Durham wanted to use Hillary Clinton’s tweet accusing Trump of having a secret line of communication with Russian Alfa Bank as evidence in Michael Sussmann’s trial next month.

Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann’s motion to dismiss Durham’s case was denied by a federal judge a couple weeks ago.

Sussmann was indicted last September for lying to the FBI.

According to the indictment, Sussmann falsely told James Baker he wasn’t doing work “for any client” when he asked for a meeting with the FBI where he presented bogus evidence the Trump Tower was secretly communicating with Kremlin-tied Alfa Bank.

Hillary Clinton fired off a tweet claiming Trump Tower was secretly communicating with Russian Alfa Bank.

The defamatory tweet is still on Twitter.

US District Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee on Wednesday denied Durham’s request to use Hillary Clinton’s tweet in Sussmann’s trial.

Durham had told the federal court earlier this month that he wanted the October 2016 tweet from the Clinton campaign promoting the Alfa-Bank claims to be admitted as evidence at the May trial.

The special counsel argued the tweet is not inadmissible hearsay “because it is not being offered for its truth” — emphasizing that the prosecutors actually believe its claims were false. Durham said he instead wanted to present the tweet to “show the existence of the defendant’s attorney-client relationship with the Clinton Campaign, which is directly relevant to the false statement charge.”

Ukrainian soldier says Elon Musk’s Starlink ‘changed the war’ with Russia: report

"Elon Musk’s decision to provide SpaceX Starlink satellite internet to assist Ukraine during the Russian invasion has been a major boost to the country’s military, a Ukrainian soldier who has been fighting since mid-March reportedly said this week.

Musk shipped Starlink terminals to Ukraine in late February at the request of top government officials, who raised concerns that the country would lose internet access due to targeted Russian attacks.

A Ukrainian soldier identified as “Dima” and based in the city of Dnipro described Starlink’s impact during an interview with journalist David Patrikarakos – noting the satellite-based broadband has made it more difficult for Russia to interfere with communication.

“I want to say one thing: @elonmusk’s Starlink is what changed the war in #Ukraine’s favor. #Russia went out of its way to blow up all our comms. Now they can’t. Starlink works under Katyusha fire, under artillery fire,” the soldier said, according to Patrikarakos’ Twitter thread detailing their interview."

"The soldier said Starlink “even works in Mariupol,” where Russia has engaged in a brutal siege and heavy shelling that has decimated the city.

Ukraine Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who first requested that Musk provide Starlink access, told the Washington Post last month that the service has proven “very effective” in keeping the country online. More than 5,000 Starlink terminals were active in Ukraine as of mid-March."

A former adviser to the Kremlin explains how Russia views the war in Ukraine, fears over Nato and China, and the fate of liberalism.

Aformer presidential adviser to both Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, Sergey Karaganov is honorary chair of the Moscow think tank the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy. He is associated with a number of key ideas in Russian foreign policy, from the so-called Karaganov doctrine on the rights of ethnic Russians living abroad to the principle of “constructive destruction”, also known as the “Putin doctrine”. Karaganov is close to both Putin and his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, and he formulated many of the ideas that led to the war in Ukraine – though he has also expressed disagreement with the idea of a long-term occupation of the country.

Karaganov has promoted the concept of “Greater Eurasia” and has defended a closer partnership with China. He is known as a foreign-policy hawk, and has argued that the long reign of the West in world politics is now at an end. On 28 March the New Statesman columnist Bruno Maçães interviewed Karaganov about his views on the war – including controversial statements on Ukrainian nationhood and denazification that would be disputed by those outside Russia – and the future of the liberal international order.

Sergey Karaganov For 25 years, people like myself have been saying that if Nato and Western alliances expand beyond certain red lines, especially into Ukraine, there will be a war. I envisioned that scenario as far back as 1997. In 2008 President Putin said that if Ukraine’s membership of the alliance became a possibility then there will be no Ukraine. He was not listened to. So the first objective is to end Nato’s expansion. Two other objectives have been added: one is the demilitarisation of Ukraine; the other is denazification, because there are people in the Russian government concerned with the rise of ultra-nationalism in Ukraine to the extent that they think it is beginning to resemble Germany in the 1930s. There is also an aim to free the Donbas republics of eight years of constant bombardment.

There was also a strong belief that war with Ukraine was inevitable – maybe three or four years from now – which could well have taken place on Russian territory itself. So probably the Kremlin decided that if you have to fight, let’s fight on somebody else’s territory, the territory of a neighbour and a brother country, once a part of the Russian Empire. But the real war is against the Western expansion.

An Antifa member in San Diego who was charged with multiple felonies, allegedly has a close relationship with an investigator for the San Diego Public Defender Office. And together they may have obtained privileged information with which to intimidate victims and witnesses, according to a prosecutor in explosive court filings uncovered this week.

“I am also aware that Jesse Cannon is or was romantically involved with Leah Madbak who works as an investigator for the San Diego Public Defender Office,” wrote San Diego County deputy district attorney Will Hopkins. His three-page declaration requesting a protective order regulating the release of discovery was originally filed in December 2021.

Jesse Cannon allegedly shoved a victim from a bicycle onto the ground, whereupon other Antifa members ganged up on that victim.

Prosecutor Hopkins cites the “very real threat to the safety of the witnesses, investigating officers, and victims in this case should the Defendants be allowed to have carte blanche access to do whatever they wish with the discovery materials from this case.”

Judge Eugenia Eyherabide granted the request in whole.

The San Diego Public Defender’s office confirmed that Leah Rose Madbak, 29, is currently an investigator in their office but declined to comment further, saying it was an “H.R. matter” before hanging up the phone.

Madbak’s alleged boyfriend, Jesse Merel Cannon, was among 11 alleged Antifa members charged in December 2021 after supporters of Donald Trump and random beach revelers were assaulted on Pacific Beach in early 2021. The case is the first time alleged Antifa members belonging to different cells have been hit with conspiracy charges in the U.S.

According to the declaration from the deputy district attorney, his office’s investigation found “gigabytes of data that the Antifa cells or ‘affinity groups,’ to which the defendants belong,” collected on their targets, which include victims, witnesses, police officers, elected officials and “even their own members who have fallen out of favor.”

The San Diego Public Defender’s office confirmed that Leah Rose Madbak, 29, is currently an investigator in their office but declined to comment further, saying it was an “H.R. matter” before hanging up the phone.

The evidence discovered through search warrants includes addresses, license plates and surveillance photos of targets and their families. Two days after the first batch of defendants were arraigned on Dec. 6, 2021, Antifa began trying to intimidate victims and witnesses, according to the district attorney’s office. “I know recently social media accounts associated with several of the defendants posted pictures of people they believed to be the victims in this case…in an apparent attempt to intimidate or dissuade them from testifying,” the prosecutor declared.

Hopkins states that in addition to the digital evidence that was seized, investigators also confiscated several firearms from the Antifa defendants. “Further, there is evidence that several of these defendants have access to other weapons which were not recovered.”

Hopkins wrote that one public official targeted by an Antifa defendant was the victim of violence outside his home, and there was another victim in this case who was intimidated in order to dissuade them from cooperating in the investigation.

Leah Madbak, the investigator in the San Diego Public Defender Office, is accused in the declaration of having “administrative privileges for several Antifa based social media accounts.” Hopkins alleges she and her boyfriend, defendant Cannon, “have posted police reports and intentionally disseminated potentially harmful information in an attempt to dox their targets.” Those Antifa social media accounts were listed as SDagainstFash, SDreportingcollective, SNAIL Cru and RABID.

The Jeff Bezos-owned paper has been relentlessly attacking the Tesla CEO over his acquisition of Twitter

The Washington Post has launched a full-scale war on Elon Musk as his takeover of Twitter has sparked a complete media meltdown.

On Wednesday, the paper whose slogan is "Democracy Dies in Darkness" published a pair of reports ratcheting up its attacks on the Tesla CEO, whose $44 billion offer to buy Twitter has been approved this week despite the heavy resistance he previously faced.

One report lamented how Democrats can do very little to combat Musk, a staunch advocate for free speech, writing how President Biden's "tech agenda gets a reality check" and how "Washington’s hands are largely tied as the world’s richest person acquires an influential social network, an impact of the regulatory void around social media companies."

Notably, as critics have pointed out, The Washington Post is owned by fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos.

"By taking the company private, Musk will be subject to even less scrutiny than powerful executives of other publicly traded companies, such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg," the Post wrote. "Lawmakers now find themselves stymied, after failing for years to implement guardrails on social media companies that might force greater accountability of Musk. The deal does not present obvious antitrust conflicts, exposing the limits of Congress’s recent focus on regulating the largest tech platforms."

The other report attempted to pin the "online attacks" aimed at one of Twitter's top executives on the incoming Twitter boss.

It was reported by Politico this week that Twitter's chief legal officer Vijaya Gadde cried during a virtual meeting with staff to discuss the Musk shakeup. "Breaking Points" podcast co-host Saagar Enjeti mocked the Twitter official, tweeting "Vijaya Gadde, the top censorship advocate at Twitter who famously gaslit the world on Joe Rogan’s podcast and censored the Hunter Biden laptop story, is very upset about the @elonmusk takeover."

Musk replied, "Suspending the Twitter account of a major news organization for publishing a truthful story was obviously incredibly inappropriate." This is referring to Twitter's censorship of the New York Post during the 2020 presidential election in response to its bombshell reporting on Hunter Biden.

Well, the Post recapped that exchange with the headline, "Elon Musk boosts criticism of Twitter executives, prompting online attacks."

"Twitter users quickly piled onto the criticism of Gadde, including calling on Musk to fire her and using racist language to describe her. Gadde was born in India and immigrated to the United States as a child. One user said she would 'go down in history as an appalling person,'" the Washington Post wrote.

The report also whitewashed Twitter's actions in suppressing the Hunter Biden story, writing "During the 2020 presidential election, Twitter temporarily blocked a New York Post story on Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s son Hunter that it said violated a policy against posting hacked materials. The company did not suspend the entire news organization but did prevent it from tweeting for a period of time." The material published by the New York Post was never proven to have been hacked despite claims from Biden supporters.

Saagar Enjeti blasted the Post's report, tweeting, "My criticism of her for a policy she publicly has defended is in no way responsible for what some rando account may say to her."

Enjeti, who himself is Indian-American, added, "This is a great example of how the media smears you. I make a substantive point, randos say something. Now myself and @elonmusk [are] somehow racist/responsible for them! All to cover up the fact that they substantively agree with censorship."

On Monday, the Post published an apocalyptic-sounding report titled "Twitter workers face a reality they’ve long feared: Elon Musk as owner," saying employees "reacted with shock and dismay" to the multibillion-dollar deal.

Even Musk himself has noticed the uptick in attacks from the Post.

"The Washington Post targets me relentlessly!" Musk exclaimed on Wednesday, adding "Their insults could be higher quality, but some are not bad. I gave them 3 stars on Yelp."

And without a hint of irony, the Washington Post published an op-ed that called for "regulation of social-media platforms to prevent rich people from controlling our channels of communication," which Musk reacted by tweeting, "Lmaooo."

Special counsel John Durham has an active and ongoing criminal probe into a tech executive who worked with a Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign lawyer to share claims of a cyber back channel between Donald Trump and Russia, prosecutors said in court Wednesday.

Prosecutors said the Durham team is still "looking closely" into whether Rodney Joffe, a tech executive and leading cybersecurity expert, defrauded the US government by misusing internet data from government contracts to search for derogatory information about Trump and Russia.

"We have not, to this point, charged a crime … but we are not able to say that a crime was not committed," prosecutor Andrew DeFilippis told a judge Wednesday, adding that the statute of limitations for Joffe's potential conduct has not expired and the probe is still underway.

These comments at a hearing about the upcoming trial of Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann were the first time Durham's team publicly detailed their investigation into Joffe. It means prosecutors are considering new defendants and additional charges as part of their sprawling investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, now in its fourth year.

Joffe worked on the Trump-Russia material with Sussmann, the Clinton campaign lawyer who was charged in September with lying to the FBI during a 2016 meeting where he passed along the data. Prosecutors claim Sussmann falsely told the FBI he shared the data as a concerned citizen, but he was really there on behalf of his clients: the Clinton campaign and Joffe.

The trial against Sussmann is scheduled to take place next month in DC federal court. He pleaded not guilty and says he never had any reason to doubt the data that came from Joffe and his researchers. The FBI looked into Sussmann's tip about a potential server back channel between Trump and the Moscow-based Alfa Bank but did not find any improper cyber links.

Joffe's lawyers blast Durham

Responding to Wednesday's hearing, a spokesperson for Joffe said the latest comments from prosecutors were "baseless and reckless" and accused Durham of pushing an "unfounded political narrative through false innuendo" to connect Joffe to a supposed anti-Trump plot.

"Mr. Joffe did not defraud or mislead any branch of the US Government," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Furthermore, the data at issue did not belong to the Government and did not contain private or personal information about any individual, nor was it manipulated in any way."

Lawyers for Sussmann say Joffe is a key part of their defense and will offer testimony that helps exonerate Sussmann. Sean Berkowitz, a Sussmann attorney, accused the prosecutors of making a "tactical decision" by holding the criminal probe over Joffe's head as a way of blocking him from testifying at trial. Because of the potential criminal exposure, Joffe intends to plead the Fifth, according to his lawyers.

"They've been looking at this forever," Berkowitz said. "They ought to be able to make a (charging) decision."

Berkowitz has asked federal Judge Christopher Cooper to dismiss the case if prosecutors don't give Joffe immunity to testify. Cooper said Wednesday that he'll try to issue a ruling soon.

Lawyers representing Joffe previously told CNN that Durham is pushing a cherry-picked narrative to make it look like Joffe fudged the data to harm Trump and help Clinton get elected. Instead, they said it "was his patriotic duty to share" the data with the FBI. He and Sussmann maintain that they funneled the data to the US government out of national security concerns.

President Joe Biden's choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security's new Disinformation Governance Board has addressed a previous statement she made about the Hunter Biden laptop controversy.

Nina Jankowicz, who was a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center, had cast doubt on The New York Post's reporting about the laptop believed to have belonged to President Biden's son.

Conservative news outlets including The Washington Examiner pointed to Jankowicz's comments about the laptop story and suggested she had spread disinformation.

Jankowicz tweeted during the presidential debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump that took place on October 22, 2020 and referenced the laptop.

"Back on the 'laptop from hell,' apparently—Biden notes 50 former natsec officials and 5 former CIA heads that believe the laptop is a Russian influence op," Jankowicz said.

"Trump says 'Russia, Russia, Russia,'" she said.

On Wednesday, Jankowicz retweeted that 2020 tweet, apparently in response to criticism, and said: "For those who believe this tweet is a key to all my views, it is simply a direct quote from both candidates during the final presidential debate. If you look at my timeline, you will see I was livetweeting that evening."

Biden had been referring to a Politico article about a letter signed by dozens of intelligence officials who said the Hunter Biden story appeared to be a Russian disinformation operation.

Jankowicz also shared a link to ballotpedia.org about the debate. That page contained a link to a transcript and a YouTube video of the debate.

Jankowicz had spoken to the Associated Press for an article published on October 15, 2020 and reportedly said there were questions about whether the laptop belonged to Hunter Biden.

"We should view it as a Trump campaign product," Jankowicz said at the time, pointing to the involvement of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Trump associate Steve Bannon.

On October 22, 2020, Jankowicz shared an article on Twitter that she described as "casting yet more doubt on the provenance of the NY Post's Hunter Biden story" and said in another tweet that day: "The emails don't need to be altered to be part of an influence campaign. Voters deserve that context, not a [fairy] tale about a laptop repair shop."

On March 16, 2021, Jankowicz shared a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and wrote in a Twitter thread the intelligence community "has a high degree of confidence that the Kremlin used proxies to push influence narratives, including misleading or unsubstantiated claims about President Biden."

However, that report did not specifically reference the laptop.

Newsweek has asked the White House for comment.

There was significant controversy about the laptop story during the 2020 presidential election and questions about the authenticity of emails reportedly found on the computer.

Some Republicans had suggested the laptop pointed to evidence of wrongdoing by Hunter Biden in his foreign business dealings that may also have implicated Joe Biden, while some Democrats dismissed it as a possible disinformation operation by Russia.

Twitter and Facebook temporarily limited sharing of stories about the laptop in late 2020 amid concerns that the emails were the product of hacking.

The laptop was one of three dropped off at a Delaware repair shop run by John Paul Mac Isaac in 2019 but never picked up from the store. Mac Isaac, reportedly a Trump supporter, looked at the contents of the laptop and believed some of it to be scandalous.

He contacted the authorities but also provided a hard drive containing the laptop's contents to Robert Costello, a lawyer for Rudy Giuliani, who shared it with The New York Post as well other Trump supporters, including Steve Bannon.

The New York Times and The Washington Post were later able to verify some of the emails but not all of them, while no evidence has emerged that the laptop was part of a Russian operation and controversy has continued over the matter.

Scientology accused of child trafficking, forced labour of Australians

While public members of Scientology can live in their homes, members of “Orgs” work as indentured labour both on sea and on land, the lawsuit alleges. They accumulate large debts from their time in the Orgs, which is then held over them if they ever leave.

Gawain Baxter was raised a Scientologist and in 1982, at only a few weeks old, his family moved from Australia to Scientology’s Flag Base in Clearwater Florida. He became a Cadet Org member at six while living in a dormitory with 100 other children.

By the age of 10 he saw his parents for only three hours a week and received very little education while labouring five to 10 hours unpaid a day including food preparation, landscaping and garbage removal, he alleges.

He says he was regularly verbally and physically abused by adults connected to Scientology and subject as a teenager to explicit questions about his sexual experiences by adult Sea Org leaders.

While living on the Freewinds – which never docks in US ports or territorial waters – he had his passport confiscated and worked 16 to 24 hours a day in unsafe working conditions, he alleges. That included repainting pipes, cleaning the ship decks and cleaning fuel tanks without safety equipment. He claims after working with blue asbestos and concrete dust he later coughed up blood.

“To this day, there are completely defenceless minors being mistreated by Scientology leadership. Just as I was, they are isolated from family and have no way to protect themselves,” Baxter said in a statement. “Scientology must be held accountable for the human rights abuses and trauma it has inflicted without a shred of remorse.”

Baxter and co-plaintiff Laura Baxter, who married, were later able to leave Freewinds after they came up with a plan to get pregnant to escape. They were told to terminate the pregnancy but refused and were later let off the boat after weeks of punishment and isolation, the lawsuit alleges.

In 2004 Laura Baxter alleges she was punished and confined to a hot engine room on the ship for three days, only allowed to leave for short periods at a time, after being accused of “monopolising” the attention of a celebrity during their birthday celebrations. Tom Cruise had a party for his 42nd birthday on Freewinds in 2004.

The other plaintiff, Valeska Paris, who now lives in Australia, had parents who were Sea Org members and was brought up as a Scientologist. By six years old she was in the Cadet Org and over more than a decade was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions as a minor, she claims.

She alleged the physical and sexual abuse was commonplace in the Cadet Org, and she had witnessed an adult Sea Org member masturbate on a boy’s bed. She said she was reprimanded for reporting the behaviour.

Paris alleged a senior Sea Org member rubbed his erect penis against her genitals. She said she had to relive her sexual assaults with adult male interrogators and was punished for reporting them and forced, on one occasion, to do the laundry of her alleged abuser.

Paris said she was a personal assistant to Miscavige and worked 16-hour days as a 15-year-old and was “sleep-deprived, poorly fed and constantly verbally abused by adult supervisors”.

She said she became suicidal and eventually ended up doing forced labour at a Scientology site in Australia and had her passport confiscated. Scientology has been accused of running a “penal colony” at a western Sydney site.
