All of them made these comments to Lauren Windsor, a liberal activist who has turned a hidden camera, a Tennessee drawl and a knack for disarming her targets with words of sympathetic conservatism into a loaded political weapon.

Posing as a true believer — in Trump or a stolen 2020 election — Windsor approaches Republican leaders at party gatherings and tries to coax them into revealing things that they might wish to keep in the GOP family.

Since late last year, as she has traveled widely around the country, several of her recordings have generated headlines.

Her encounter in December 2020 with Tommy Tuberville, then a senator-elect from Alabama, elicited the first real evidence that some Republicans in the Senate would reject the Electoral College votes certifying Joe Biden’s victory, a move based on groundless claims of fraud. “We’re going to have to do it in the Senate,” Tuberville told Windsor after a speech, as an aide hustled him away.

“More Republicans should follow his lead,” Trump tweeted after the recording was uploaded. Eight GOP senators, including Tuberville, ended up voting on Jan. 6 to overturn the election results, even after rioters stormed the Capitol that day.

Windsor, 40, calls herself an “advocacy journalist,” though her methods fall beyond the pale of mainstream journalism, where reporters generally shy away from assuming false identities and secretly recording conversations.

She says her stings are justified by Republicans’ efforts to spread disinformation about the election and to weaken the nation’s democratic underpinnings through restrictive new voting laws and measures taking greater control over how elections are run.

“Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures,” she said. Assuming a false identity, she argued, can produce a truer record of a politician’s views. “Acting like you’re one of them — you’re going to elicit different answers than if you have a recorder in somebody’s face and they know you’re a journalist.”

Republicans lawmakers in North Carolina said that they want to inspect voting machines that were used during the 2020 presidential election in Durham County to see if they could have been connected to the internet, which is illegal in the Tar Heel State.

Rep. Jeff McNeely, a North Carolina Republican and member of the freedom caucus, said he and other members of the group pulled Durham County out of a hat that had the name of all 100 North Carolina counties, according to WRAL.

McNeely, during a news conference, said he and other Republicans want to inspect the voting machines because of "many, many millions of accusations" of "machine tampering and votes being switched because of modems, according to WRAL.

According to North Carolina state law, voting machines do not have modems and are not permitted to connect to the internet.

"We look forward to working with them, proving that our elections were true and were valid and there was nothing wrong with them. If that's not the case, then we look to do an investigation, and if there needs to be criminal charges, they will be filed," McNeely said to reporters, according to WRAL.

McNeely said that he has already received approval from the people who supply the machines, and now he needs permission from the North Carolina Board of Elections and the county in question.

He also said Republicans "have the right through our Constitution," to conduct the inspection, according to the News & Observer.

Durham County officials, however, are not on board with the inspection. The county's Elections Director Dereck Bowens said such an examination would not be permitted to move forward.

"No one will be permitted to inspect voting equipment in Durham County, as per statute and direction from the Executive Director of the State Board of Elections," Bowens said, according to WRAL.

State Board of Elections Executive Director Karen Brinson Bell sounded a similar note, saying that the election in the county cannot be thrown into confusion.

"Unauthorized individuals who are not elections professionals have no authority to open and inspect voting equipment," she added.

The effort to investigate the voting machines comes after a number of GOP-led states, including Arizona, launched audits of the 2020 presidential election after former President Trump and his allies repeated unsupported claims that the vote was tarnished by fraud.

The results of the Arizona audit were released last week which confirmed President Biden's victory, concluding that he came out on top by a wider margin than originally tabulated.

Trump won the state of North Carolina by nearly 75,000 votes, which translates to 1.3 percent, according to The New York Times.

When North Carolina Republican lawmakers were asked on Thursday if they believe Biden is the duly elected president, those present said no, according to the News & Observer.

Senate Leaders Announce Short-Term Deal to Raise Debt Ceiling

The top Democrat and Republican in the U.S. Senate on Thursday announced a deal that will raise the United States’ debt ceiling for a brief period.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) hammered out the agreement after Democrats refused to fold the debt limit matter into a mammoth budget package they’re hoping to ram through Congress with no Republican votes.

“I have some good news. We’ve reached an agreement on an extension of the debt ceiling through early December. It’s our hope we can get this done as soon as today,” Schumer said on the Senate floor in Washington.

The Democrat told reporters on Capitol Hill that “we’re getting there” when asked if a deal was close before entering the Senate chamber.

The agreement raises the debt ceiling by $480 billion, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) confirmed to reporters. That’s estimated to fund government borrowing until Dec. 3.

McConnell said on the floor that the deal was reached after hours of late-night negotiations. The agreement will “spare the American people a manufactured crisis,” he added.

Democrats were facing a shrinking number of options in the face of Republican opposition to their mega-spending plans. Some were floating unorthodox plans like voting to allow the ceiling to be raised or suspended outside of the filibuster.

McConnell broke the impasse late Wednesday, offering to let Democrats pass a short-term emergency debt limit extension that would let the United States avoid a looming default until they pass a longer-term fix through reconciliation.

“Republicans remain the only party with a plan to prevent default. We have already made it clear we would assist in expediting the 304 reconciliation process for stand-alone debt limit legislation,” he said in a statement. “To protect the American people from a near-term Democrat-created crisis, we will also allow Democrats to use normal procedures to pass an emergency debt limit extension at a fixed dollar amount to cover current spending levels into December. This will moot Democrats’ excuses about the time crunch they created and give the unified Democratic government more than enough time to pass standalone debt limit legislation through reconciliation.”

After the announcement, many Democrats promoted the narrative that Republicans folded.

“McConnell caved,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) told reporters on Wednesday.

SAN LUIS - Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced that a State Grand Jury has indicted Guillermina Fuentes, of San Luis, Arizona, on additional charges related to her alleged illegal conduct in the August 2020 Primary Election. Fuentes is accused of voting for another person with an early ballot.

In December 2020, Fuentes was indicted on one count of Ballot Abuse

, also known as “ballot harvesting.” That charge, which is also included in the new indictment, alleges that during the August 2020 Primary Election, Fuentes knowingly collected four voted ballots from other persons, in violation of Arizona law

. The early ballots were deposited into a ballot box on Election Day, and were processed and counted by the Yuma County Recorder during the election. Arizona law only provides for a family member, household member, or caregiver of the voter to collect voted or unvoted early ballots from another person.

In addition to the Ballot Abuse charge, the new indictment alleges three additional felony charges: Conspiracy, Forgery, and an additional Ballot Abuse count. The new charges allege that Fuentes conspired to obtain and vote the early ballot of another individual in the August 2020 Primary Election. The indictment further alleges that Fuentes knowingly signed the individual’s name on an early ballot envelope, and that she allegedly violated another part of the Ballot Abuse law by marking the individual’s ballot.

This investigation was conducted by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office Special Investigations Section, Election Integrity Unit, and Special Agent Roger Geisler.

The case against the other defendant in the case, Alma Juarez, is ongoing.

Assistant Attorney General Todd Lawson is prosecuting this case.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
