The Philippines was a valuable U.S. ally during the Cold War, but communist rebels were an ongoing problem—until the CIA faked vampire attacks to deter them!

REBELS WITH A CAUSE

Marginalized after the end of World War II, members of the Filipino’s People Army became increasingly marginalized when the war ended, despite fighting for years against Japanese occupation. Subscribing to Communist ideals, they began a peasant’s rebellion, claiming independence from wealthy Manilan Filipinos who had grabbed land and worked with Japanese invaders.

Since the Philippines was a primary asset to the U.S. during the war, the CIA sent one of their most effective officers, Edward Lansdale, to help quash the Hukbalahap Rebellion.

War Sucks

The CIA chose to exploit the Huks belief in the aswang, a monster, Filipino folklore said to drain the blood of humans. Back in the ‘50s, residents of rural Philippines still very much believed in and feared the aswang, so Lansdale took advantage of this.

A unit of Hukbalahap rebels had taken up a prime position on a hill in Luzon. This was the perfect opportunity for Landsdale to deploy his psywar tactics.

When the unit went on patrol at night, Lansdale ordered his people to silently grab the last man in the group, puncture his neck in two places, hang him upside down to drain his blood, then throw his body back out on the trail, a covert and gruesome action.

The rebels, of course, returned later to look for their missing comrade, only to find an exsanguinated corpse that looked like the victim of an aswang attack.

WINNING TACTICS

While this might seem like an odd tactic, believe it or not, it worked! The very next day, the frightened rebels fled their hilltop position, losing one of their greatest advantages.

Although it only took one fake vampire attack to scare the Huks away from that location, it wasn’t the end of things.

Lansdale deployed more psywar techniques, such as painting menacing all-seeing eyes on homes in villages where he suspected Hukbalahap rebels were hiding in the night and broadcasting messages from low-flying planes to make the rebels believe spies were in their midst.

In May 1954, the Hukbalahap surrendered and the rebellion was over, and Edward Lansdale is largely credited with putting an end to it.

While his fake vampire attack wasn’t the only event to end the rebellion, it stands out as one of the strangest tactics used against Cold War combatants.

Despite such concerns, election security officials have only shown concern about the ‘rigorous auditing’ for elections where the preferred candidates might lose. Far from there being calls to audit the 2020 election, election security officials, such as CISA, have called the 2020 election the “most secure” in American history and have actively discouraged audits.

The most remarkable thing about the letter is that the election security officials proceed to shred Dominion Voting Systems’ vulnerabilities.

“Every complex software system has bugs and security flaws. Cybersecurity research has shown that election software has more than its share,” the election security experts write. “Since that software is usually kept proprietary and secret, however, relatively few people have had the opportunity to examine, instrument, and test it closely enough to find exploitable flaws.”

“This is now no longer the case, at least with Dominion software,” the letter continues. “As of August 2021, thousands of unknown people can study the code and find weaknesses to plan attacks on elections. The attacks can be deployed by non-technical accomplices, including voters, building maintenance personnel, and election workers. Unfortunately, even extensive pre election testing of the voting equipment may not deter or detect such attacks.”

The fascinating thing about such statements is that it obviously didn’t take a leak from Mike Lindell’s Cyber Symposium to put the EMS software “out there” for determined actors to get their hands on it. It is obvious that other actors may have had it prior to the 2020 election. It is not a “conspiracy theory.” The experts are implying it here in black and white; indeed, Harri Hursti was featured in the HBO series “Kill Chain” discussing such election vulnerabilities prior to the November election. The letter references another election security expert: Alex Halderman.

“The Dominion software from Antrim County has been studied in detail recently by University of Michigan computer science professor Alex Halderman, one of the nation’s foremost experts in voting system cybersecurity,” the letter continues. “While serving as an expert witness in the Curling v. Raffensperger lawsuit in federal court in Georgia, Prof. Halderman found very serious security vulnerabilities in the Dominion Ballot Marking Device (BMD) system, some of which would allow an ordinary voter to insert malware into a BMD during a voting session, with little likelihood of detection.”

“That malware could spread undetected to other voting machines and potentially to the central election management system (EMS) in the county,” the letter adds. “That EMS software is now in the hands of countless unauthorized people after the Mesa and Antrim releases. Prof. Halderman’s full report, dated July 1, 2021, is so sensitive that the Court in Curling v. Raffensperger ordered that it be sealed.”

“However, it is critical to recognize that the release of the Dominion software into the wild has increased the risk to the security of California elections to the point that emergency action is warranted,” the experts conclude.

The implications of the “security breach” are obvious: The secrecy and non-transparency of the nation’s voting systems software is the security threat. Because if officials and private companies can keep the voting systems software secret, it can be abused to rig elections. This is not a “theory” — it is a fact.

It should be added there is nothing wrong with the “rigorous auditing” of elections. Indeed, audit away. But the selectivity of the demands for election audits is more than suspect. There should be election integrity at all times for all candidates in order to ensure that the American people’s voices are indeed heard.

Buried beneath divisions and sub-groups in the CIA, MKUltra began as early as 1950, but wasn’t official until 1953, technically falling under the US Army Chemical Corps. Motivated to combat the Soviet “truth serum,” its purpose was to develop techniques and drugs for mind control.

Secrecy

Utilizing a number of fronts, the project tapped into the resources of colleges, hospitals, prisons, mental health facilities, and even brothels.

Many of MKUltra’s activities were illegal, though the details of its operations are mostly unknown. Though the project was officially shut down in 1964, it’s outgoing director instructed the destruction of all of the project’s documents in 1973.

They had good reason not to record their activities. They were found to not only experiment on people without consent or knowledge of the risks involved, but would also secretly drug people who would later suffer severe repercussions.

Mind Control

Prisoners, mental health patients, civilians, and soldiers were all unwittingly drugged or subject to other forms of “mind control” testing. LSD was their drug of choice, but they also attempted hypnosis, sleep deprivation, isolation, and verbal abuse. Though they never mastered “mind control,” they found many ways to put prisoners under extreme duress, with many of their techniques going on to be used as interrogation tactics in the Middle East.

Hoping to develop a technique to compromise and turn Soviet spies, they drugged unknowing soldiers, some of which were found to develop mental disorders in the face of seemingly unprompted hallucinations. With sparse records, few subjects were ever check up on afterward, and Senate committees would end up paying hundreds of thousands in recompensation to families.

Proving the Project Existed

While carrying out a Freedom of Information Act request, it was a budget office that stumbled across financial records of MKUltra in 1977. Used as evidence in a Senate investigation, it wasn’t until 2001 that some of the documents were declassified. They revealed surface-level information about some of the projects:

Operation Midnight Climax

Essentially, he set up a brothel in which the US government paid for prostitutes to lure clients to a safe house, drug them, and then “watch what happened” through cameras and two-way mirrors in the rooms.

Recruiting a few prostitutes to establish a cover, it’s unclear how willing the sex workers were to drug unwilling participants for the government. White, however, cared little about a participant’s willingness. After his advances were denied by a local club singer, Ruth Kelly, he drugged her with LSD just before she went up to perform on stage to—once again—”see what happens.” She made it through her performance and escaped to a hospital before the agent could intercept her.

Killed in 1953, Frank Olson’s family wouldn’t know the secret cause of his death for 22 years. Apparently falling from the 13th floor of a hotel in New York City, newspapers said he committed suicide from stress at his job with the Army.

Working on anthrax aerosols, they decided to drug him with LSD, and see if he would yield classified secrets. After the bout, he became confused, seeking help from less than scientific means. The long journey of a Japanese soil sample

The story of how ivermectin was discovered is quite incredible. In the late 1960s, Satoshi Ōmura, a microbiologist at Tokyo’s Kitasako Institute, was hunting for new antibacterial compounds and started to collect thousands of soil samples from around Japan. He cultured bacteria from the samples, screened the cultures for medicinal potential, and sent them 10,000 km away to Merck Research Labs in New Jersey, where his collaborator, William Campbell, tested their effect against parasitic worms affecting livestock and other animals. One culture, derived from a soil sample collected near a golf course southwest of Tokyo, was remarkably effective against worms. The bacterium in the culture was a new species, and was baptised Streptomyces avermictilis. The active component, named avermectin, was chemically modified to increase its activity and its safety. The new compound, called ivermectin, was commercialised as a product for animal health in 1981 and soon became a top-selling veterinary drug in the world. Remarkably, despite decades of searching, S. avermictilis remains the only source of avermectin ever found.

Campbell urged his colleagues to study ivermectin as a potential treatment for onchocerciasis (also known as river blindness), a devastating disease caused by worms and transmitted by flies, that left millions of people blind, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The first clinical trials in Senegal showed that the treatment worked, and ivermectin was approved for human use in 1987. Since then, more than 3.7 billion doses (donated by Merck laboratories) have been distributed globally in mass drug administration campaigns against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (another disease caused by worms, which causes severe swelling of limbs). The impact of ivermectin in decreasing the burden of these devastating diseases is immeasurable. Deservedly, Ōmura and Campbell won the Nobel prize for physiology and medicine in 2015 “for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites” (they shared it with Youyou Tu, who discovered the antimalarial drug artemisinin). But ivermectin’s story of success does not end here.

A game-changing drug with many potential uses

Ivermectin, in fact, was the world’s first “endectocide” – a drug with activity against a wide variety of internal and external parasites, from nematodes to arthropods. It has also proved to be astonishingly safe for humans. This is because the drug acts by binding to special channels on the cell membrane (called glutamate-gated ion channels) that play a fundamental role in nematodes and insects. In mammals, however, the drug has no effect since the neurons expressing these channels are protected by the blood brain barrier. In addition to its high safety profile, no convincing evidence of drug resistance has been found to date among Onchocerca worms, despite 30 years of continued use and billions of doses administered.

All this explains why ivermectin is becoming increasingly attractive to treat other diseases in humans. For example, long-term treatment with ivermectin to control onchocerciasis was shown to reduce the prevalence of other parasitic worms called soil-transmitted helminths, which infect up to one fifth of the world’s population and are a major cause of malnutrition and growth impairment in children. Furthermore, ivermectin is very effective against Strongyloides, a roundworm that infects up to 35 million people every year. WHO KILLED JOHN HENRY?

The story of John Henry, told mostly through ballads and work songs, traveled from coast to coast as the railroads drove west during the 19th Century. And in time, it has become timeless, spanning a century of generations with versions ranging from prisoners recorded at Mississippi's Parchman Farm in the late 1940s to present-day folk heroes.

Steel drivers, also known as a hammer man, would spend their workdays driving holes into rock by hitting thick steel drills or spikes. The hammer man always had a partner, known as a shaker or turner, who would crouch close to the hole and rotate the drill after each blow.

The C&O's new line was moving along quickly, until Big Bend Mountain emerged to block its path. The mile-and-a-quarter-thick mountain was too vast to build around. So the men were told they had drive their drills through it, through its belly.

It took 1,000 men three years to finish. The work was treacherous. Visibility was negligible and the air inside the developing tunnel was thick with noxious black smoke and dust. Hundreds of men would lose their lives to Big Bend before it was over, their bodies piled into makeshift, sandy graves just steps outside the mountain. John Henry was one of them. As the story goes, John Henry was the strongest, fastest, most powerful man working on the rails. He used a 14-pound hammer to drill, some historians believe, 10 to 20 feet in a 12-hour day - the best of any man on the rails.

One day, a salesman came to camp, boasting that his steam-powered machine could outdrill any man. A race was set: man against machine. John Henry won, the legend says, driving 14 feet to the drill's nine. He died shortly after, some say from exhaustion, some say from a stroke.

So why would one man - one among a hundred years of other men and other stories - emerge as such a central figure in folklore and song? For this, we can only speculate.
