School Board Members Quitting Over "Toxic" Parents Who Oppose Mask Mandates, Vaccines, And CRT

As schools across the country force masks and Critical Race Theory (CRT) on America's youth, a massive backlash from angry parents has proven to be too much for some school board members to handle.

According to the Associated Press, "a growing number are resigning or questioning their willingness to serve as meetings have devolved into shouting contests between deeply political constituencies over how racial issues are taught, masks in schools, and COVID-19 vaccines and testing requirements."

A Nevada school board member said he had thoughts of suicide before stepping down amid threats and harassment. In Virginia, a board member resigned over what she saw as politics driving decisions on masks. The vitriol at board meetings in Wisconsin had one member fearing he would find his tires slashed.

In his letter of resignation from Wisconsin’s Oconomowoc Area School Board, Rick Grothaus said its work had become “toxic and impossible to do.” -AP

"When I got on, I knew it would be difficult," Grothaus - who resigned Aug. 15, told AP. "But I wasn’t ready or prepared for the vitriolic response that would occur, especially now that the pandemic seemed to just bring everything out in a very, very harsh way. It made it impossible to really do any kind of meaningful work."

According to National School Boards Association interim executive director, Chip Slaven, the charged political climate 'has made a difficult job even more challenging, if not impossible.'

It's not just pissed off parents, either. Earlier this month, a Virginia teacher quit her job at a school board meeting, saying that she refused to “be a cog in a machine” that forces her to transmit their “highly politicized agendas” to children.

“Within the last year, I was told, in one of my so-called equity trainings, that white, Christian, able-bodied females currently have the power in our schools and that ‘this has to change,'” said the elementary school teacher Laura Morris during the public comment portion of the board meeting.

“School board, I quit,” she said.

“I quit your policies, I quit your training, and I quit being a cog in a machine that tells me to push highly politicized agendas on our most vulnerable constituents—the children,” Morris added.

At one Veil, Arizona school board meeting, angry parents alternated between blasting officials over masks, vaccines, and CRT - while the board has no intention of addressing and acting on any of those topics.

After the board attempted to shut down the debate, more angry parents stepped up to drag their noses back on topic.

"There is starting to be an inherent distrust for school boards, that there’s some notion that we are out to indoctrinate children or to undermine parents or things like that, when we are on the same team," said Vail, AZ board member Allison Pratt, who's been on the board for six years.

Pratt said she strives to view issues from the perspective of even the most extreme members of the community, and she has no plans to resign. But she has stepped up security at her home.

Police have been called to intervene in places including Vail, where parents protesting a mask mandate pushed their way into a board room in April, and in Mesa County, Colorado, where Doug Levinson was among school board members escorted to their cars by officers who had been unable to de-escalate a raucous Aug. 17 meeting. “Why am I doing this?” Levinson asked himself.

Kurt Thigpen wrote in leaving the Washoe County, Nevada, school board that he considered suicide amid relentless bullying and threats led by people who didn’t live in the county, let alone have children in the schools. “I was constantly looking over my shoulder,” he wrote in July.

In several states, board members who won't resign are facing recall efforts. According to Ballotpedia, 147 school board members are up for recall across 59 campaigns in 2021. Among them, Vail board president Jon Aitken - whose critics say the mental and physical health of students in his district has declined amid pandemic restrictions.

13-year-old boy killed by lightning strike at Bronx beach

August 13, 2021

A 13-year-old boy has died after he was struck by lightning at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, police said Friday.

Carlos Ramos was one of a group a people gathered at the beach who were struck by lightning during a fast-moving storm at about 5 p.m. Thursday, a police spokesperson said.

The teenager died at Jacobi Hospital, police said. Six other people were treated at the hospital for injuries from the lightning strike. Their conditions weren’t known.

Meghan Lalor, a spokesperson for the city Parks Department, said lifeguards had cleared swimmers from the water and department staff members had made announcements to clear the beach prior to the lightning strike.

Mountain lion killed after attacking child in California

August 29, 2021

A mountain lion that attacked a 5-year-old boy and dragged the child across his front lawn in Southern California was shot and killed by a wildlife officer, authorities said Saturday.

The 65-pound (30-kilogram) mountain lion attacked the boy while he was playing near his house Thursday in Calabasas and “dragged him about 45 yards” across the front lawn, said Capt. Patrick Foy, a spokesman with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The boy suffered significant traumatic injuries to his head and upper torso but was in stable condition at a Los Angeles hospital, Foy said.

“The true hero of this story is his mom because she absolutely saved her son’s life,” Foy said. The mother was inside the house when she heard commotion outside.

Some books that deserved to be read multiple times. This is one of three books I first read a few months ago, and I just revisited them all to find that they are still as good as I remembered them. See also my reviews of Reinventing Gravity and In Search of Time.

How does a single-cell creature, such as an amoeba, lead such a sophisticated life? How does it hunt living prey, respond to lights, sounds, and smells, and display complex sequences of movements without the benefit of a nervous system? This book offers a startling and original answer. I re-read this tome a couple of weeks ago as I pen these words, yet I'm still pondering the things it taught me on a daily basis. I would strongly recommend this little scamp to anyone and everyone. This is a “must read”!!! (I know that multiple exclamation marks are the sign of a feeble brain, but I don't care!)

Wetware: A Computer in Every Living Cell is an incredibly thought-provoking book.

…Early in the book we are introduced to the amoeba. Even though this is only a single-celled creature, it can “crawl” around, hunt for food, and respond to external stimuli like lights and sounds and smells… all without muscles or a nervous system.

How can this be? Dennis walks us through the concepts of things like proteins and explains how – in the case of the amoeba – interactions between different proteins can be used to detect external stimuli, perform “computations” and “make” decisions, cause the amoeba to move in its “desired” direction, and so forth. Dennis also describes how these structures could have originated and evolved over time.

If the book had stopped at this point it would still have been worth ten times what I paid for it… but this is only the beginning. Dennis then moves on to describe how colonies of single-celled creatures (some with a nucleus like an amoeba, and some without a nucleus like bacteria) can perform “quorum sensing”, which allows them to detect the presence of others of their kind and – more significantly – how many of them there are (few, many, very many…)

In July 1957, publisher James M. Cox Jr. named Baggs editor of the Miami News. He held that position until his death at age 45 on January 7, 1969.

During his tenure, his newspaper had a front seat to the Cuban Revolution, Bay of Pigs Invasion, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. His friendship with President Kennedy gave him advanced knowledge of the Soviet Union's buildup of missile launch sites on the island. Later, though, when he was asked by a Time magazine reporter how his newspaper scooped both the announcement as well as the turning back of Soviet ships, Baggs answered, "A roseate spoonbill told us."

An active anti-Communist, Baggs published numerous anti-Castro editorials and articles during the early days of the Fidel Castro regime in Cuba, beginning in 1959. Baggs cultivated numerous news sources from within the anti-Castro Soldier-of-Fortune community in South Florida, including Gerry Patrick Hemming, Roy Hargraves, Eddie Collins and William Whatley, as well as Alex Rorke and several others. He also worked with Frank Sturgis and Bernard Barker to develop news leads and sources about the South Florida anti-Castro exile community long before they were involved with the 1970s Watergate scandal.

Baggs regularly talked with South Florida CIA case officers, such as David Atlee Phillips and E. Howard Hunt, on various topics related to the intrigues among South Florida anti-Castro Cuban exiles. One of his reporters, Hal Hendrix, known as "the spook" at The Miami News, broke the story about the alleged coup d'état against Juan Bosch of the Dominican Republic, the day before it happened. This was embarrassing for the CIA and Miami News, but also for Hendrix.[citation needed]

Civil Rights As African Americans increased their activism in the civil rights movement, Baggs was among a small group of white Southern editors who supported them and covered events in the South. Others in this group included Ralph McGill at The Atlanta Constitution, Hodding Carter at the Greenville Delta Democrat-Times, and Harry Ashmore at the Arkansas Gazette.[1][2]

In the 1960s, Baggs became increasingly opposed to the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1967 and 1968 he traveled to North Vietnam with Harry Ashmore, editor of the Arkansas Gazette, on a private peace mission. While there, they interviewed the North Vietnamese premier, Ho Chi Minh, about what he needed to end the war.[3]

Baggs was a longtime supporter of liberal Democrats such as Rep. Claude Pepper and Rep. Dante Fascell. He wrote numerous articles and editorials supporting legislation to help the numerous retirees who were already dominating the population in South Florida. They represented the core readership base of the Miami News. He was often criticized for his support of civil rights, opposition to the Vietnam War, and promotion of social welfare programs for the elderly, the infirm and the disadvantaged in South Florida and throughout the nation.

Baggs supported early pioneering conservation efforts to rescue the southeast section of Key Biscayne from overdevelopment by real estate developers. The Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park was named in his honor on land protected from development.
