Israeli Missile Strikes in Northern Syria Kill Five

Syria reports most missiles intercepted

Details are emerging on Israel’s overnight missile strikes against Syria’s north. The strikes reportedly killed five people, two Syrians and three non-Syrians, and destroyed a military base near Aleppo.

Syrian state media confirmed the attacks, and said that their defense systems intercepted most of the incoming missiles. They added that overall damage done in the strikes is still being assessed.

The Syrian military said the missiles were aimed at several locations in the area. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed those included a weapons depot which they accused of being “pro-Iranian.”

This area near Aleppo is along the frontier between Syrian government territory and an enclave occupied by Turkish-backed rebels. Though Israel attacks Syrian military sites regularly, it is unusual for them to do so this far north.

As is almost always the case, the Israeli military refused to comment on the attack, saying that they do not address military strikes which were initially reported in foreign media.

China Says CIA Has Hacked Beijing for Over a Decade

Beijing denied claims from the US and its allies that China was behind a cyberattack on a Microsoft server

Beijing on Tuesday pushed back against accusations from the US and its allies that China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) was responsible for a series of cyberattacks, including the hack of the Microsoft Exchange Server, which was discovered earlier this year.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the claims against the MSS were “fabricated” and repeated accusations China has made against the CIA. Zhao cited a 2020 Chinese cybersecurity report that accused the CIA of hacking critical Chinese infrastructure for an 11-year period, between 2008 and 2019. The report used data from WikiLeaks’ Vault 7 releases that revealed hacking tools used by the CIA.

“China once again strongly demands that the United States and its allies stop cyber theft and attacks against China, stop throwing mud at China on cybersecurity issues and withdraw the so-called prosecution,” Zhao said. “China will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard China’s cybersecurity and interests.”

The US was joined by many of its allies when it accused Beijing of being behind the Microsoft hack, including the UK, the EU, and most notably, NATO. Before Monday, NATO had not involved itself in accusations over China’s alleged cyber activities. The military alliance recently added cyberattacks to the list of reasons to invoke NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause.

Similar to US hacking accusations against Russia, no evidence was offered to prove the MSS was involved in the Microsoft hack. When the intrusion was first announced in March, Microsoft said it determined with “high confidence” that a group name Hafnium was responsible, which Microsoft assessed to be “state-sponsored and operating out of China.” Backing up Microsoft’s assessment, a US official told reporters that the US government assessed with “high confidence” that hackers affiliated with MSS were responsible.

The US Justice Department on Monday unsealed indictments against four Chinese nationals who allegedly coordinated a hacking campaign on behalf of the MSS between 2011 and 2018. The US hasn’t threatened additional actions yet, but the accusation could be used as a pretext for sanctions. The Biden administration has hit Russia with sanctions and expelled Russian diplomats over similar claims.

The North Carolina Board of Elections denied a request to examine voting machines, citing overriding federal authority under the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The request, made by the North Carolina House Freedom Caucus, was denied in a July 7 letter.

As reported by the Epoch Times, Chairman of the caucus Rep. Keith Kidwell said that while there is a statute that requires state employees to comply with requests for data from the North Carolina General Assembly, the executive director of the board, Karen Brinson Bell, declined the request.

Prior to the denial, the House Freedom Caucus met with the Board of Elections twice, and Kidwell said that Elections Systems & Software, the largest election vendor for North Carolina, agreed to provide access to three voting systems it manufactures.

The vendor also indicated they’d be willing to take any inspected system at a randomly selected precinct by the Caucus and recertify the equipment so that there would be no cost to the Board or county.

“We would not invade, compromise, or damage the machines,” Kidwell said in a press conference. “The only thing that would happen is the ES&S service technician would open, show us and allow us to see that there are no modems in the machines.”

CBP Officers at Anzalduas International Bridge Apprehend Fugitive Wanted on Child Sex Charges

MISSION, Texas –U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Anzalduas International Bridge apprehended Lorenzo Gomez Guerra, a male lawful permanent resident from San Juan, Texas who has an arrest warrant associated with a child-related alleged sex crime.

“CBP Field Operations is always ready to assist our law enforcement partners in locating those wanted persons with outstanding warrants, especially those allegedly involved in heinous crimes of a sexual nature with children,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas.

On July 20, 2021, the 39-year-old man arrived from Mexico at the Anzalduas International Bridge and a CBP officer immediately secured him after discovering Gomez was a possible match to an arrest warrant. Once in secondary, CBP officers confirmed his identity along with the active arrest warrant from San Juan Police Department. Gomez faces an outstanding arrest warrant on felony state charges of indecency with a child.

A McAllen Police Department officer and US Marshal deputy arrived to take custody of Gomez and transported him to the county jail.
