Biden pledges his support for Ukraine in first call with President Zelensky after Russia sent 4,000 troops to the border and sparked fears of war in the Donbass region

President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time as president Friday, amid escalating tensions with Russia.

'President Biden affirmed the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea,' the White House's readout said.

Politico first reported the leaders would talk Friday morning and said the conversation lasted between 30 and 40 minutes.

All week, key U.S. officials had been in touch with their Ukrainian counterparts, as video footage showed Russia sending trains filled with tanks and military vehicles into Crimea and toward Donbass, Ukraine's easternmost region that borders Russia.

'We've seen this movie before,' White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday, mentioning the Russian 'aggressions.'

Ukrainian officials had been asking Washington for weeks for there to be a call between Biden and Zelensky, but the U.S. president has been keeping his Ukrainian counterpart at arm's length as he pushes for more reforms in the country, Politico said.

The readout said that Biden committed to revitalizing the 'strategic partnership' between the U.S. and Ukraine 'in support of President [Zelensky's] plan to tackle corruption and implement a reform agenda based on our shared democratic values that delivers justice, security, and prosperity to the people of Ukraine.'

Two weeks into the coronavirus lockdown in March 2020, as New Yorkers underwent a collective crash course on surviving a 100-year global pandemic, a delivery arrived at CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s Southampton home. A top aide in the New York State Department of Health, reports say, brought a then-hard-to-secure Covid-19 test, courtesy of the broadcast journalist’s older brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Cuomo Prime Time host announced on his show March 31, 2020 that he tested positive, and continued broadcasting from his basement to much fanfare, including appearances on the governor’s then-daily, Emmy-winning news briefings. But a year later, that virus test — and the laws possibly broken to make it happen — has joined the snowballing number of accusations of misconduct the New York State Assembly’s judiciary committee is investigating amid another maelstrom that hasn’t enveloped the Empire State in a century: impeachment hearings questioning the governor’s deeds.

“While the Assembly investigation will look into those allegations, the committee’s primary focus remains an investigation into issues related to sexual harassment, the nursing homes and bridge safety,” Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove), who chairs the committee overseeing the gubernatorial impeachment proceedings, says of the tests.

The bridge inquiry eyes whether the administration glossed over potential structural concerns with the construction of the nearly $4 billion Mario M. Cuomo Bridge,

which replaced the Tappan Zee Bridge and is named for the governor’s father. The sexual harassment allegations — from eight women as of press time, including current and former aides to Cuomo — are also being investigated by New York State Attorney General Latisha James’ office. And the claims that the governor’s team deliberately undercounted the state’s nursing home death toll are additionally targets of federal probes. The governor has bucked calls to resign.

If true, the allegation that the governor fast-tracked virus tests for friends, family, and others raises the question of whether he or his staff violated state laws against public officials granting such favoritism. State law prohibits government officials from using “his or her official position to secure unwarranted privileges or exemptions for himself or herself or others, including but not limited to, the misappropriation to himself, herself or to others of the property, services or other resources of the state for private business or other compensated non-governmental purposes.”

The Albany Times-Union first reported the allegations that the governor prioritized COVID-19 tests for VIPs on March 24. The Washington Post further revealed on March 29 that extra resources were dedicated to the governor’s little brother. Both newspapers cited anonymous sources and reported that state Troopers rushed tests to The Wadsworth Center, the state health department’s lab in Albany, in some of the allegedly prioritized cases.

“Among Cuomo relatives, Chris Cuomo’s family received attention that appeared to go beyond that of others, receiving multiple visits at their Hamptons home from Department of Health physician Eleanor Adams, according to two people familiar with the visits,” the Post reported.

Brooklyn rabbi under investigation for role in underage marriages

Inside a Brooklyn yeshiva, more than 100 people gathered last month to dance and celebrate a marriage — of a 15-year-old bride.

The groom was either 21 or 22, according to someone who was in attendance.

Now Joel Roth, the Hasidic rabbi who heads the Williamsburg yeshiva called Mosdos Heichel Hakodesh Breslev, is under investigation by the NYPD and city Administration for Children’s Services for his role in arranging and performing unofficial underage marriages, according to a report in The Forward.

A spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office confirmed it was aware of an investigation “into marriages [Roth] performed.”

The legal age for a civil marriage in New York is 18, with 17-year-olds allowed to wed with parental and court permission.

While Roth’s weddings are only religious ceremonies — the couples are not old enough to get a city marriage license — the unions could run afoul of state laws.

“These are not legal marriages in New York State. I am sure there is a big fancy wedding, but it’s not like anyone at that wedding is asking to see the marriage license,” said Fraidy Reiss, the founder of Unchained at Last which advocates against forced marriages. “What it means is a lifetime of rape.”

Frimet Goldberger, a writer who used to belong to the Satmar Hasidic sect, posted a photo on Twitter last month of a baby-faced boy she said was 15 and newly engaged to a 17-year-old girl.

She alleged in a tweet that this “new trend” was started by Roth.

Goldberger told The Post that numerous parents have since contacted her saying Roth influenced their children to become his followers. She said she’s heard Roth’s teachings forbid any kind of birth control, or divorce.

“You get married at 15, you have a child at 16 or 17 and then that’s it for life,” she said.

When asked about the investigation, the NYPD responded that it “takes sexual assault and rape cases extremely seriously, and urges anyone who has been a victim to file a police report so we can perform a comprehensive investigation, and offer support and services to survivors.”

An ACS spokeswoman said she could not comment whether there was an investigation into Roth, only saying “child marriage is illegal in New York and we take allegations of child marriage and child sexual abuse very seriously.”

The young couples introduced and married by Roth live together. He says in one video that if the groom doesn’t have a job, “we’ll pay someone and they’ll give him a job,” according to a translation of the Yiddish provided to The Post.

An older sister of the 15-year-old married last month was wed last year at 16 and already has a child, the wedding attendee said.

Roth, 39, who is also known as Yoel, is described by some in the ultra Orthodox community as a charismatic figure popular among adolescent boys and girls.

He is also known for alienating the youngsters from their parents.

“He’s a bona fide cult leader who’s basically making minced meat out of parents,” said one community insider.

Roth is reportedly an adherent of a philosophy that dictates in order to save young boys from sexual “sin” they should be married off young.

He is the grandson of Rabbi Yechezkel Roth, a noted Jewish legal scholar who died last month at 86 and whose Brooklyn funeral attracted large crowds.

Roth veered off into a different Hasidic sect called Breslev and started the non-profit Camp Breslev in 2016.

The organization’s mission is to “conduct a House of Worship for the Jewish Religion” as well as “help poor grooms and brides to have a decent wedding and everything they need to start on their own,” state documents show.

Roth did not respond to a request for comment.

Reynolds signs gun bill easing background checks, permits

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill Friday that will make handgun carry permits and background checks on unlicensed sales optional in Iowa.

As of July 1, people can buy handguns from private non-licensed sources such as websites, gun shows and individuals without a permit or background check. People also will be able to carry a gun into public places such as grocery stores and malls without prior safety training or a permit.

Reynolds said in a statement that the bill protects the Second Amendment rights of Iowa’s law-abiding citizens.

"We will never be able to outlaw or prevent every single bad actor from getting a gun, but what we can do is ensure law-abiding citizens have full access to their constitutional rights while keeping Iowans safe,” she said.

Democrats opposed the bill, calling it a dangerous reversal of commonsense safety measures that have helped keep Iowa safer than states that have lifted such restrictions.

“By caving to the gun lobby and extremists in the legislature, Gov. Reynolds has failed her constituents and made clear that she stands with the gun lobby over public safety,” said Erica Fletcher, a volunteer with Iowa Moms Demand Action, a gun safety advocacy group. “We’ve seen what happens when states weaken their gun laws, gun violence goes up and people die.”

Currently 22 states have laws that require background checks for all handgun sales at the point of sale and/or as part of a permit requirement, including Iowa for now. The remaining states, including Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin, do not require background checks on all sales.

Reynolds, a Republican, has spoken in the past in support of Iowa's current background checks and permits to carry handguns. However she has rarely vetoed measures supported by her GOP colleagues.

The bill passed the Iowa Senate with Republican votes only on March 22 at the same as a man was shooting customers at a Boulder, Colorado, grocery store. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, who bought the Ruger AR-556 he used six days before the attack, is facing murder charges.

It cleared the House with the backing of only one Democrat.

By ending the permit and background requirements, the state will no longer check to ensure a person obtaining a gun from a non-licensed seller or those carrying a gun aren't disqualified from ownership due to past felonies or abuses. The bill also eliminates firearms training now required to obtain a gun permit.

The process for buying guns from federally licensed dealers doesn't change and still requires background checks.

Republicans insisted the measure recognizes that keeping and bearing arms is a fundamental right for law-abiding citizens and that communities are safer when more people have guns to protect themselves.

Guard Troops Rapidly Deploy to US Capitol After Attack on Police

The security posture is "steady" on Capitol Hill after a suspect rammed a car into two police officers Friday, acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters in a press briefing.

The suspect was gunned down by police after exiting the vehicle and "lunging" at officers with a knife, she added.

Law enforcement have not yet released details on the suspect. Officer William F. Evans was identified by authorities as the police officer killed in the attack. He had served with the Capitol Police since March 2003.

National Guard troops mobilized, providing a more visual presence on Capitol Hill immediately following the attack. A large group of troops equipped with riot gear could be seen running toward the site of the attack, where they secured a major road that goes through the Capitol campus.

"The D.C. National Guard deployed an Immediate Response Force (IRF) composed of National Guard soldiers and airmen to the Capitol complex this afternoon to support the U.S. Capitol Police," the National Guard Bureau said in a statement.

The attack came while 2,300 troops are still patrolling the Capitol campus, a significant reduction from the 27,000 Guardsmen who deployed to Washington, D.C., in January in response to a pro-Trump mob attack on the Capitol in which another police officer died.

It is unclear whether additional soldiers will be called to respond to D.C. Pittman said there is currently no evidence to suggest there is an ongoing threat.

Authorities said they do not know the assailant's motivation or whether the attack is connected to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Capitol Police and the Defense Department, which have not detailed any specific ongoing threats, have had to defend their plan to keep troops on Capitol Hill at least through May.

There has been a bipartisan call from lawmakers for the Guard to withdraw, something even top brass within the Guard itself have endorsed.

Last month, Reps. Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Mike Rogers, R-Ala., the top lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee, pushed back on the Pentagon's proposal to keep soldiers on Capitol Hill.

"We are deeply troubled by the current level of security around the United States Capitol. More than two months after the January 6 attack, the seat of our nation's democracy remains heavily protected by Guardsmen and surrounded by a perimeter fence," the pair said in a joint statement.

The two agreed there should be some troops in the D.C. area to respond to credible threats but said, "The present security posture is not warranted at this time."

Universal Basic Income And The Road To Serfdom

Many people think that a universal basic income (UBI) would be a good substitute for the welfare state. Under this proposal, each person resident in a country would receive a guaranteed income, sufficient to live at a modest level. People would get the money unconditionally. Unlike welfare payments, the UBI would not be lessened if people earned money in addition to the amount it provided, and, because it is not means tested—absolutely everyone gets it, even billionaires—it requires no complex bureaucracy to administer.

The UBI would cost a great deal of money, but its defenders claim that since it is a substitute for the welfare state, we would also save the vast amounts of money now required for financing welfare programs. Further, if our economy continues to grow, at some point the UBI will become affordable. Charles Murray, for example, in a short book published a number of years ago, says of his version of the UBI, “I began this thought experiment by asking you to ignore that the Plan was politically impossible today. I end proposing that something like the Plan is politically inevitable—not next year, but sometime…. Real per capita GNP has grown with remarkable fidelity to an exponential growth equation for more than a century” (In Our Hands, AEI Press, 2006, p. 125).

The critics of the UBI aren’t convinced and still claim the program would be too costly to implement. In a recent book, Universal Basic Income – For and Against (Rational Rise Press, 2019). Antony Sammeroff offers a very able account of this controversy and many other issues connected with the UBI. He gives an especially good analysis of the argument that automation is liable to make so many people unemployable that a UBI will be needed to provide for them. But what I’d like to discuss this week is another argument that Sammeroff deploys to great effect against the UBI.

Not only could the state use the UBI as an instrument of social control; we have every reason to think those in charge of the state would exercise their power for bad motives.

Sammeroff’s argument here is consistent with the contention of Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom, summarized in the title of chapter 10, “Why the Worst Get on Top,” but it is not quite the same. Hayek argues that rulers will very likely be bad, but Sammeroff’s point is not dependent on this thesis. His claim is rather that the evidence shows that our present rulers are bad and will remain so. Thus they can be expected to abuse the UBI program.

Jordan’s state news agency said Saturday that two former senior palace officials “and others” have been arrested for “security reasons.”

The Petra news agency denied initial reports that said Prince Hamzah, the half-brother of Jordan’s King Abdullah II, had been detained or placed under house arrest.

Hamzah was warned, however, to cease “movements and activities that are used to target” the security and stability of Jordan. The request was made as part of an investigation by security services, Petra said.

The report said Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, the former royal envoy to Saudi Arabia, and Bassem Ibrahim Awadallah, the former head of the royal court, were detained. Awadallah also previously served as planning minister and finance minister.

The agency did not provide further details or name the others who were arrested.

Jordan informed Israel “the situation is under control” and there was no danger to the stability of the Hashemite kingdom, the Walla news site reported.

The message was relayed by Jordanian officials to their Israeli counterparts, the report said.

Jordan has long been a key Western ally and an island of stability in a turbulent region. It borders Israel, the West Bank, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Jordan reportedly foils plot to topple King Abdullah

Former Jordanian Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein has been placed under house arrest amid reports that the kingdom’s security forces have foiled a coup against King Abdullah II.

At least 20 Jordanians have been arrested in connection with the alleged coup.

According to The Washington Post, Hamzah was placed under restriction at his Amman palace amid an alleged plot to unseat King Abdullah II.

“The move followed the discovery of what palace officials described as a complex and far-reaching plot that included at least one other Jordanian royal, as well as tribal leaders and members of the country’s security establishment,” the report said.

The official Jordanian media initially reported that Hamzah has been placed under house arrest.

Later, however, a Jordanian official was quoted as saying that “His Royal Highness, Prince Hamzah bin Hussein was not under house arrest or detention, contrary to reports in the media.”

Hamzah is the elder son of the late King Hussein and his American-born wife, Queen Noor. He was named Crown Prince of Jordan in 1999, a position he held until his half-brother, King Abdullah II, rescinded it in 2004.

Hamzah, an outspoken critic of corruption in Jordan, had called for holding those responsible to account.

Sources in Jordan said that a large security force raided Hamzah’s palace in Amman in the afternoon and handed him a house arrest order.

A number of Hamzah’s associates, including the director of his office, Yasser Suleiman al-Majali, were arrested by officers belonging to the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate, the sources said. The director of Hamzah’s palace, Adnan Abu Hammad, was also taken into custody, they added.

Other sources said that the Jordanian security forces withdrew the security detail of Hamzah.

Rasheed al-Majali, a relative of the detained director of Hamzah’s office, said that several heavily-armed security officers took part in the arrest.

“They drew their weapons in the face of women and children and took Yasser [al-Majali] to an undisclosed location,” he said. “Yasser has a heart issue and needs various round-the-clock medication.”

Majali is a prominent Jordanian political family based in the town of Al-Karak. Members of the family emigrated to Jordan from the West Bank city of Hebron. Some members of the family previously served in senior positions in Jordan. Two of them, Hazza’ Majali and Abdelsalam al-Majali, are former prime ministers.

A statement published by Jordan’s official news agency Petra said that “Jordanian citizens Hassan bin Zaid, Bassem Ibrahim Awadallah and others were arrested for security reasons.”

The statement did not make any reference to the alleged plot to overthrow the Jordanian monarch or to Hamzah. “The arrest was made after close security follow-up and was executed for security reasons,” the agency said.

Bin Zaid is a member of the royal family in Jordan.

Awadallah, a Jordanian citizen born in Jerusalem, previously served as Director of the Office of King Abdullah II and Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court. Awadallah also served as an unofficial Jordanian envoy to Saudi Arabia and is said to maintain close ties with the royal family in Riyadh.

Ex-IDF intel. chief: Israel must continue covert ops in Iran

Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Aharon Ze’evi-Farkash believes that the Biden administration will not rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal before the June Iranian presidential election.

“Don’t worry, we are there in Iran; we will make sure they do not cross the line,” said senior Russian officials during a visit to Israel.

It was during Aharon Ze’evi-Farkash’s 2001-2006 term as chief of IDF Military Intelligence.

Ze’evi-Farkash and the Russian officials were debating how much Israel could trust Moscow to be its last line of defense to make sure that the Islamic Republic did not go nuclear, even as Russia was helping Tehran progress in various nuclear realms.

The retired IDF major-general was not satisfied by the initial reassurance, and responded with a characteristic stinging reply, “You’ll make sure? Just like you made sure that China, India and Pakistan would not go nuclear?” (All three countries obtained nuclear weapons – in 1964, 1974 and 1998, respectively – despite Russian opposition.)

A bit taken aback, but never wanting to back off, the Russian officials said, “No, we will really try because it is not good for anyone for Iran to be nuclear,” citing Iran’s Islamic radicalism and the millions of Muslims living in Russia about whom Moscow always has nightmares.

It is with this skepticism that Ze’evi-Farkash comes to the questions of those who think Tehran can be coaxed out of nuclear weapons or that it will give up the pursuit.

Despite his skepticism that Iran can be prevented from getting nuclear weapons indefinitely, he is strongly in favor of putting off that grim day for as long as possible.

Further, Ze’evi-Farkash believes that the Biden administration will not rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal before the June Iranian presidential election.

“I don’t know if they [the Biden administration] will get a completely new or improved deal. Even though [president Donald] Trump is gone, a deal is far-off for the US. There won’t be a deal before June,” he told The Jerusalem Post Magazine in a recent extensive interview.

Caring for the Rescued

The children from under the ground need appropriate appreciation - lots and lots of warmth.

If we dont have enough proper foster care for those we seek to place in foster care under usual circumstances, how can we find such for these children? And the usual child care systems are so often corrupt. The evil "demand" for children is so high.

I think the answer is, that these are children who know how bad things are, and would accept another procedure. Such a procedure could be given by founding a live-in school where one simply loves them en-masse, discusses openly as need may be, in this school, the horrors, the need for Jesus.

I think that would work.

You see, these children have seen it all. They don't need anyone to tell them anything. On the contrary they know that only someone who is humble before God will have wisdom. Beware the learned. Only the meek will have understanding.

They have lived that. You dont want to approach them with any theory or model. They hold truth themselves.

When you are with them God is watching you.

(My wife knew a Nazi KZ survivor. The survivor said, she never experienced love between people as true and intense as in that KZ).

We would need them to be absolutely safe, perhaps even protected visibly by MIL so that they also feel safe.

They need visible security. That is much more important than anything else.

I suggest permanent military presence surrounding the school.

These children can live with everything if and only if they are secure, have loving people around them, the chance to talk in love with others, to speak of Jesus, to speak of wisdom, to speak of love. That is what they need - real people.

Like Potus and Flotus for example.

There are people who can give this understanding, who have spoken out. The best person to ask about their needs might be Svali - she has experienced the worst surely. Torture in the womb, birth mother tortured to attach her to her handler. Cathy O'Brien would be a wonderful person to ask, also.

So this would be my procedure.

- Set up military security, visible for all the children. They know who saved them. Occasional (or permanent) visitors taking part in the discussions at the school should please be Navy Seals who might describe the rescue processes. (Provide boxes of paper handkerchiefs.)

- Set up a live-in school. With pleasant, simple, rooms to feel secure in, to sleep in securely.

- Discuss. Have opportunities to discuss everything. All that needs to be discussed.

- The children already know enough of the bad side. They are the experts. Offer beauty. They will appreciate it and open into it. Offer gardening, farming, education, drawing/painting.

If you let people enter into what is good, they will step slowly into it and open up.

So that's my formulation for now.

Offer security, shelter, discussion, truth. True love.

The rescuers themselves might need help in healing.

Perhaps they, too, could live on the site, and share the healing.

GOP senator: Biden family deals in China pose 'enormous blackmail' threat for president

Hunter Biden's dealings with Chinese nationals, including one who is now a convicted felon, pose an "enormous blackmail" threat to President Biden, a key Republican senator who investigated the matter warns.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., the former chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and current ranking member on the powerful Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, told the John Solomon Reports podcast on Friday that the case of Chinese businessman Patrick Ho chi-Ping illustrates the threat.

Ho, 70, was part of an investment group that worked with Hunter Biden and his business partners after Joe Biden left the vice presidency. Ho was convicted of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for trying to bribe high-ranking officials in Chad and Uganda, and court records show he was the subject of a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant.

"This investment group, they were hoping to tap for initially $10 million. But these are individuals that had ties right into the Communist Party of China, within the People's Liberation Army. And Patrick Ho was an individual that apparently was subject to a FISA warrant, which means somebody somewhere is suspecting him being a counter-intelligence threat."

"These are the individuals that Hunter Biden is associating himself with, trying to develop an investment firm with. In the end, when Patrick Ho was indicted, the first phone call he made was to James Biden –– I've heard that he was really trying to get ahold of Hunter," Johnson added, citing evidence his investigators reviewed.

"Hunter, in the end, got paid a million dollars to represent Patrick Ho, this individual that, again, the U.S. government issued a FISA warrant done because of the counterintelligence threat that he might have posed. So it just boggled my mind with what we revealed in our report," Johnson said.

A spokesman for the White House and a lawyer for Hunter Biden did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Johnson also discussed the difficulties of getting information from federal agency bureaucracies, which he said often thwarted his Senate subpoenas and evidence requests.

"But you know, for a while, it was like pulling teeth getting information out of these –– I'll call them 'Deep State' agencies –– under President Trump," Johnson said. "I mean, President Trump, as much as he wanted this stuff made public and and unclassified, still couldn't get it done because they slow-walked our requests, ran out the clock, hoping that President Trump wouldn't get elected, and unfortunately, he was not reelected."

"So now we've got the Biden administration –– [Attorney General] Merrick Garland, [Director of National Intelligence] Avril Haines –– we're writing the letters, we'll make it public. Hopefully, public pressure will prompt them to at least provide us some information," he added. "And of course, we're also looking at the Department of Justice, the district –– the U.S. Attorneys that are apparently investigating Hunter Biden, but again, I'm not holding their breath on that investigation, either."

"We will be in a boatload of trouble when we see interest rate spikes," Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips says, referring to the interest costs on the national debt

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is warning that the national debt –– now estimated to total $85,210 per person –– poses an imminent threat, especially if interest rates spike.

The U.S. government has spent around $6 trillion during the coronavirus pandemic, in addition to regular government appropriations. The $6 trillion figure does not count the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that President Biden signed a few weeks ago. The deficit set a record in FY2020 at $3.13 trillion. And the national debt has hit a record $28 trillion.

Maine Independent Sen. Angus King, a member of the Senate Budget Committee who caucuses with the Democrats, said that "we've got a problem" as a country with the rising deficit and national debt, particularly around the interest on the debt.

"I'm concerned about it in terms of generational equity, the long-term implications for your generation and the generation that comes after," King said during a discussion organized by the Millennial Debt Foundation. "And it bothers me from a, sort of, ethical point of view that where my generation is spending the money, spending your money."

According to the Treasury Department, interest payments on the debt totaled $522.7 billion in FY2020 alone.

"It's a cheap time to borrow and some people are using that as a reason to borrow. The problem that comes is our interest rates flow. The U.S. has the ultimate adjustable rate mortgage, which is the rates can change," King said. "And if the rates go back to 4 to 5%, which is where they've been historically, we're in a heap of fiscal trouble. The math is pretty easy. Every 1% is $250 billion a year of interest costs. So 4% is $1 trillion dollars; 5% is $1,250,000,000,000, which happens to be the entire current discretionary federal budget."

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips shared King's concerns about the billions of dollars, per day, that the U.S. is spending on the debt's interest costs alone.

Police in Quebec City, Québec, Canada are arresting protesters as thousands take to the street to oppose unscientific lockdowns and fines against those who violate the government’s mandates.

Mocha Bezirgan, a video reporter for Rebel News, attended the protest and captured video of the large crowd of peaceful protesters marching and dancing through the streets.

Bezirgan uploaded another video showing several police officers leaving a building and promptly grabbing several protesters to fine them with $1,550 tickets for publicly protesting the lockdowns without face masks.

Iowa Governor Signs Bill Into Law Letting Residents Buy, Carry Guns Without Permits

April 3, 2021

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation into law on Friday lifting some restrictions to buy or carry a handgun in the state for law-abiding citizens.

The NRA-backed legislation named “House File 756” will take effect on July 1 and eliminates the requirement for law-abiding Iowans to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun from private non-licensed sources. Additionally, to carry a weapon, people will no longer need to have a permit as well.

Individuals will still have to follow federal law and go through an instant background check to buy from licensed sellers each time they purchase a gun.

People who fail to commit to the new law will be charged with a Class D felony, which is punishable by up to five years in prison. It will become a felony if a person sells, rents, or loans a firearm to someone the seller “knows or reasonably should know” isn’t legally allowed to get a gun or is intoxicated.

“Today I signed legislation that protects the 2nd Amendment rights of Iowa’s law-abiding citizens while still preventing the sale of firearms to criminals and other dangerous individuals,” Reynolds said in a statement after signing the bill.

“This law also takes greater steps to inform law enforcement about an individual’s mental illness helping ensure firearms don’t end up in the wrong hands,” she added. “We will never be able to outlaw or prevent every single bad actor from getting a gun, but what we can do is ensure law-abiding citizens have full access to their constitutional rights while keeping Iowans safe.”

The new law has been supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA), which applauded the governor for signing the bill allowing law-abiding adults to carry a concealed firearm without first asking the government’s permission for a permit.

On March 22, House File 756 passed 60–37, with all Republicans voting for it, along with Democrat state Rep. Wes Breckenridge. Republicans have a majority in the Senate and previously passed a similar piece of legislation through a committee.

Iowa now becomes one of 19 states in the U.S. that no longer requires law-abiding citizens to get a permit before carrying a gun for self-defense.

The 18 other states that eliminated this requirement are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Democrats have opposed the bill, saying the reversal is dangerous and a “reckless disregard for the safety and well-being of Iowans.”

“Our communities aren’t safer when criminals can legally purchase a handgun without a background check,” Iowa Democratic Party Chair Representative Ross Wilburn said in a statement in reaction to Reynolds signing the bill.

“Background checks are wildly popular, even among gun owners, as a common-sense way to keep people safe,” he said. “Legislation like this serves no purpose other than appeasing the gun industry and its powerful lobbyists.”

Mark Olivia, director of public affairs at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, told The Epoch Times that laws restricting gun ownership have dubious origins.

“The history of gun control laws really has its roots in Jim Crow-era racist laws that are designed to deny people their rights,” he said. “Your permit is your Second Amendment right. The idea of having to get a permit to be able to exercise your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is antithetical to what your rights are as an American at birth.”
