Early life and education

In fact, the United States refused to continue funding it in 2005 because they strongly disagreed with their mission and objectives. They are very bad for our Country. They stop many projects that are worthy, and hurt many others. They were asked by the United States Military not to bring this suit because of the Top Secret nature of the important facility being built. Army Temporarily Halts All Apache Training Flights After Fatal Crash in Texas

Army leaders have ordered a nationwide pause as investigators seek the root cause of the Apache maintenance test flight crash near Fort Hood.

The U.S. Army said on Aug. 14 that it had temporarily halted all Apache helicopter training flights following a recent crash in Texas that killed two soldiers.

“Army leaders directed a temporary stand-down of AH64 Apache training flight operations. The stand-down will remain in effect until we have a better understanding of the root cause of the accident,” the Army said in a statement.

Two members of the U.S. military were killed on Aug. 12 after their AH-64E Apache attack helicopter crashed near Fort Hood, Texas. The Army identified them as Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deontre T. Huey and Warrant Officer Seth L. Olmstead.

The U.S. Army Fort Hood Media Center said in a statement on Aug. 14 that the Apache helicopter experienced “a mishap” around 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 12 during a maintenance test flight in Salado, Texas, before crashing near Fort Hood.

The Army extended its condolences to the families and friends of the two pilots, adding that an investigation to determine the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

“We mourn these aviators, and our deepest condolences remain with their families, friends, and unit during this extraordinarily difficult time,” it stated.

The White House has accused more than 40 nations, including some of its closest partners, of helpingChinese goods evade US tariffs by exploiting differences in levies imposed on third countries.

A new 25-page report titled ‘The Great Transshipment Scam’, released by the White House on Thursday, names Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, India, Israel, Taiwan, and the EU among those allegedly involved in the practice.

The document claims the “scam” involves sending Chinese-made goods through another country, where they are lightly processed, repackaged, or relabeled before being shipped to the US under a new declared origin.

Washington says the practicetook off after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Chinese products in 2018. Since returning to office, Trump has expanded levies to much of the world,creating wide differences in tariff rates between trading partners. Last month, he also imposed new tariffs on imports from 60 countries over alleged failures to combat forced labor, drawing protests from several major US partners. The White House acknowledged that such gaps may themselves have increase incentives for rerouting.

The report estimates that the practice costs the US Treasury tens of billions of dollars annually. Under one central model-based scenario, it puts lost federal revenue at $19 billion to $26 billion and claims around 450,000 American jobs could be displaced.

Washington said it now plans to step up enforcement using an AI-based customs system dubbed ‘Detective Border’, designed to flag suspicious shipping routes, origin claims, and ownership links. The report warns that violators could face additional tariffs, sanctions, or exclusion from the US market.

China has repeatedly condemned Trump’s tariff regime, accusing Washington of protectionism and economic coercion and arguing that its trade and technology restrictions disrupt global commerce.

Earlier this month, the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced tighter export controls on drones and related technologies and retaliatory measures against several American entities, warning of further countermeasures if Washington introduces new restrictions.

WNBA task force discusses transgender athletes amid furor

A WNBA task force of team presidents and general managers met Wednesday and discussed transgender athletes but did not arrive at any eligibility rules, according to a statement sent to ESPN by a league spokesperson.

In recent weeks, demonstrators have staged rallies at Indiana Fever games for and against transgender inclusion after Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said in an ESPN article that she supports barring transgender girls and women from girls' and women's sports.

The league's statement Wednesday, in full, reads:

"Today's meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months. We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others."

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously sent a memo to teams saying a task force of WNBA team presidents and general managers would discuss the issue at the meeting, which was already scheduled.

The WNBA has no publicly available policy governing eligibility of transgender or intersex athletes. The 2026 collective bargaining agreement signed in March states that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." There is no further definition of a woman. On Friday, two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying they identify as women.

No known transgender woman has ever played in the WNBA. Two known nonbinary athletes have played in the league: Layshia Clarendon and AD Durr. Both players' birth sex is female. The WNBA has not responded to requests to clarify its policy and how it applies to transgender women, transgender men and nonbinary players.

Before Indiana's win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday, Fever coach Stephanie White gave an impassioned speech about the commentary and scrutiny directed at her team and the WNBA.

"The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that's trying to hijack our league will not win," she said.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has made at least $174,000 annually for nearly eight years as a member of Congress, but like many of her “Squad” colleagues, she has yet to put a substantial dent in her student loan debt, according to House financial disclosures.

The Bronx and Queens Democrat has owed between $15,001 and $50,000 in federal student loan debt since her election to the House in 2018. That’s the same amount she owes now, according to her August disclosure, where lawmakers report ranges for debt and income.

The “Tax the Rich!” pol reported less than $81,000 in total assets.

Recently, Ocasio-Cortez has suggested that she’d been saving up for some time instead to freeze her eggs, a process that can cost between $10,000 and $20,000 per cycle.

Ocasio-Cortez amassed the loans while attending Boston University as an international relations and economics major between August 2007 and May 2011 — and went on to tend bar in Manhattan before her successful run for Congress.

The “Squad” Democrat has consistently backed student debt cancellation. During former President Joe Biden’s term, she even pushed the 46th commander-in-chief to cancel as much as $50,000 in debt per student borrower. But she’s not the only US lawmaker who’s still holding student loans.

“Alaska is a must-win Senate seat for Democrats to retake control of the Senate,” Harris wrote in a fundraising email, urging the public to “help Mary Peltola get the support she needs” by splitting a donation between Peltola’s campaign and the ex-veep’s Fight for the People PAC.

Harris continued, “So if there’s anyone who can flip Alaska and secure the Senate majority for Democrats – it’s Mary. But she cannot do it alone.”

“When we all stand behind Mary, we can give her the boost she needs to overcome their spending and organize across Alaska,” the former vice president added.

Peltola, a former congresswoman who flipped Alaska’s at-large congressional seat blue in 2022, was not interested in Harris’ support.

“Mary isn’t seeking endorsements from anyone from the Lower 48 — her focus is and always will be Alaska,” a campaign spokeswoman told the New York Times.

The outlet said the Peltola campaign did not approve the fundraising email.

Harris lost Alaska to Trump in the 2024 presidential election by a whopping 14 percentage points.

Notably, Peltola did not endorse Harris in the 2024 race.

A Georgia financial advising CEO was sentenced Friday to 20 years behind bars for masterminding a $380 million Ponzi scheme to fund his lavish lifestyle of yachts, private jets and luxury shopping.

Todd Burkhalter, the founder of Atlanta-area Drive Planning LLC, orchestrated one of Georgia’s largest schemes and stole millions from over 2,000 investors in the years-long con.

Burkhalter, 59, was ordered to serve two decades in federal prison by US District Court Judge Tiffany R. Johnson, while two of his executives were sentenced to less than five years for their roles this week.

Burkhalter’s attorneys had asked for a 14-year sentence while federal prosecutors recommended 17 and a half years as part of a plea deal back in January.

The Florida executive had pleaded to wire fraud charges following a years-long investigation into the shady ventures.

Between September 2020 and June 2024, Drive Planning marketed investment opportunities to potential investors to secure nearly $400 million in funds, even immediately using the money to pay off early investors.

Burkhalter then used the pool of cash for high-end personal spending, including buying a $2 million yacht, a $2.1 million condo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, dropped $800,000 on vehicles, including a motorcoach and two Land Rovers.

He also spent millions on luxury travel, chartering private jets, $800,000 to pay his ex-wife’s attorney and another $320,000 on clothing, jewelry, and beauty treatments.

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Thursday President Donald Trump has helped her deliver for the state, pointing to a specific fighter jet mission she tried to secure during the Biden administration but couldn’t.

Whitmer spoke to Newsom on his podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom,” and said she needed to figure out how to conduct herself after the 2024 presidential election because her state had voted for Trump again.

Newsom noted Whitmer had visited the White House, and the pair both agreed a working relationship with the president was “part of the job.”

“I’ve gotten some really good stuff done. Honestly,” she told Newsom. “I got a fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and I tried to get that done under the Biden administration, couldn’t get over the finish line, but I got it done with him. So, that’s a huge deal to Michigan.”

Whitmer appeared to be referring to Mission Next, which will replace the retiring A-10 Warthog aircraft based at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan with 21 brand-new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets.

The mission is part of a modernization plan for the National Guard Base, according to the National Guard’s website, which includes construction and infrastructure upgrades that will create jobs and new training opportunities.

The Trump Department of Transportation has stepped up enforcement of commercial driver’s licensing rules, seeking more information from states to find unqualified truck drivers, including illegal immigrants. It has threatened to withhold about $10 million in funding if states don’t hand over the records.

However, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul led a group of 21 Democrat-leaning states and the District of Columbia in filing two lawsuits in the Eastern District of Virginia, just over a year after an illegal immigrant truck driver caused a Florida Turnpike collision that killed three people.

“Yet again, the Trump administration has threatened to hold federal funding hostage in order to obtain personally identifiable information of millions of Americans for improper purposes,” Raoul said.

“This database was created 40 years ago so states could share information with each other to stop unsafe drivers from operating commercial vehicles, and the federal government’s decision to ransack that database puts the whole system in jeopardy,” he added. “I will continue to push back on the unnecessary and unlawful attempts of the Trump administration to misuse Americans’ most personal information.”

The state’s commercial licensing data is stored centrally with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, an organization that represents state DMV officials. The federal agencies gave the association a deadline of Aug. 17 to share the information; when the association said it could not meet the deadline, the Department of Homeland Security subpoenaed the records.

Joining Illinois in the lawsuit are Democrat attorneys general from Virginia, California, the District of Columbia, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. In Pennsylvania, which has a Republican attorney general, the governor’s office joined the lawsuit.

The White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing released an extensive report this week identifying the major nations who enable China to transship goods into the U.S market in an effort to avoid tariffs. [REPORT HERE]

Within the report several nations and regions are identified as being used by Chinese manufacturers to avoid U.S. customs and duty enforcement mechanisms. However, both Canada and Mexico are cited as primary enablers of the process.

The issue strikes at the heart of the problem identified long ago with the NAFTA agreement, and the problem only worsens when the USMCA provisions on country of origin are not enforced.

When you remove oil and lumber, the majority of Canada’s manufactured exports to the USA contain Chinese component parts and this has been the source of much friction in the current trade negotiations. The manufacturing supply chain within all free trade agreements only works when the source of component goods is accurately recorded.
