A Pentagon official has been seen for the first time since he was accused of running an illegal dog-fighting ring for 20 years - and electrocuting animals that didn't die in grim battles.

Frederick Douglass Moorefield Jr., stepped out of his Maryland home in a white t-shirt, black baseball cap, and gray sweats following his arrest. He held brochures and letters as he exited his car.

Moorefield was a deputy chief information officer in the Department of Defense when he hosted gamblers at his property in Arnold, Maryland, according to court documents.

He was arrested Thursday along with his friend Mario Damon Flythe, 49.

Flythe was also spotted on Wednesday by DailyMail.com, seemingly eating a snack outside his home.

During a search of Moorefield's home, investigators found five pit-bull type dogs in cages, bloodstained walls and furniture and a set of jumper cables that were allegedly used to electrocute surviving dogs after fights.

Police also found an apparatus used for involuntarily inseminating female dogs, veterinary medicine including an anabolic steroid and Moorefield's iPhone which contained messages consistent with his involvement in dogfighting.

According to the affidavit, Moorefield, Flythe and their associates used encrypted messaging applications to discuss training the animals, exchanging grim videos and laying down bets.

Moorefield used the name 'Geehad Kennels' and Flythe used the name 'Razor Sharp Kennels' to identify their respective dogfighting operations.

During the search of Moorefield's home they found a weighted vest with 'Geehad Kennels' on it and a training schedule.

They observed dark stains on the walls of the basement that appeared to be dog blood and large wooden panels with similar stains and dog hair.

During the search they recovered a section of grey carpet with dark stains consistent with blood stains from multiple dog fights.

Authorities seized seven pit-bull type dogs from Flythe's Glen Burnie home. During their search they found dogfighting paraphernalia including weighted collars and a carpet mill.

Court documents state that during the search of Flythe's home he admitted to participating in dogfighting in the past.

The affidavit written by FBI Special Agent Ryan C. Daly indicated they have been investigating a dogfighting ring which called itself 'the DMV Board,' for years.

Nine members in the ring were indicted in Virginia last year and as part of their cooperation showed authorities Telegram app messages between members of the ring.

Investigators also found the dogfighters used an online site to the pedigrees of their fighting dogs.

Entries on the website found dogs claimed to be owned by Moorefields alias 'Geehad Kennels' dating back to 2002.

In November 2018, Anne Arundel County Animal Control responded to a report of two dead dogs in a plastic dog food bag.

Upon investigation, authorities found mail inside the bags addressed to Moorefield and wounds and scarring patterns on the dogs that were consistent with dog fighting.

LCDR Tim Gorman, spokesperson for the Office of the Secretary of Defense said the department is aware of the matter.

'We can confirm that the individual is no longer in the workplace, but we cannot comment further on an individual personnel matter,' said Gorman.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Biden administration announced it waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to allow border wall construction on Wednesday, marking the administration’s first use of a sweeping executive power employed often during the Trump presidency.

The Department of Homeland Security posted the announcement on the U.S. Federal Registry with few details outlining the construction in Starr County, Texas, which is part of a busy Border Patrol sector seeing “high illegal entry.” According to government data, about 245,000 illegal entries have been recorded so far this fiscal year in the Rio Grande Valley Sector which contains 21 counties.

“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary, stated in the notice.

Australia will once again tip money into the United Nations-led Green Climate Fund, reversing the former Morrison government's decision to pull out of it in 2018.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed Australia will make a "modest" contribution to the fund this year.

The climate fund takes donations from developed countries and uses the money to finance climate mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries.

It has raised more than $20 billion in two funding rounds since it was launched in 2015, and while Australia contributed to the first round, it and the United States were notable absences in the second.

Funding includes both grants and concessional loans, and is distributed by a board made up of both developed and developing countries.

Projects funded in recent years include a $10m solar project in Fiji and a $47m project to help Tonga shift away from a reliance on diesel-generated power.

But it has been criticised in the past for a perceived lack of clear direction and strategy, as well as the politicisation of decisions by board members.

Some Pacific officials have also complained it can be difficult to secure access to funding from the scheme.

However it remains the fifth-largest source of climate finance in the region – and a recent report from the Lowy Institute found that for every dollar Australia contributed to the fund it unlocked up to $1.60 in additional global climate finance.

The Morrison government cited governance issues with the fund when making its decision to withdraw, arguing it would simply work directly with developing countries to help them develop climate resilience.

A spokesperson for Ms Wong said Australia intends to work within the fund to drive change.

"Australia will be re-joining the Green Climate Fund, with a modest contribution to be announced before the end of the year," the spokesperson said.

"We have taken on board feedback from our partners in the Pacific on the best ways to direct our climate finance efforts and ensure all elements deliver for Pacific priorities.

"We recognise that the GCF is the most prominent global climate finance fund, and we will work with partners to improve the GCF's effectiveness."

But they said they will also continue working directly with nations on various projects too.

"At the same time, Australia is supporting the Pacific's transition to renewable energy and is helping countries build climate resilience," they said.

"We will continue to boost financing to the Pacific directly, building on our increased development assistance for the region."

Experts welcome Australian presence 'back in the room'

Some foreign policy experts have been calling on Australia to re-engage with the Green Climate Fund, arguing it's still a critical mechanism to help developing nations fight climate change.

News of new jobs is supposed to be great, right? So, what kind of weird world do we live in when it is considered horrible? Welcome to Fedworld where most market decisions are nothing but bets on what the Fed will be doing next with its free money for millionaires.

Today we saw that in action as good job news kicked some reality into the FedMed-addled heads of investors about Fed tightening, which they have been denying all year. Suddenly, they realized they had a lot of catching down to do to align with a tightening target that readers here know the Fed has been heading to all along … even before the Fed knew it. Obviously, the Fed didn’t know it, given that the Fed has revised its tightening targets all along the way as these article have said would happen.

While workers report in today’s survey that they don’t feel the job market is strong, the number of new jobs was high enough that it caused Treasuries to take a rocket ride up past 4.8% yields on the 10-YR bond. The 30-YR joined the move, also rising to its highest point in 16 years. All because those jobs means the Fed will going “higher for longer” just like it has been speaking into the disbelieving heads of bond investors and stock investors for a long time. In fact, Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic emphasized today that the Fed should hold rates higher for longer “for a long time.”

Rising yields combined with the jobs report caused the stock market to finally have a heart attack and plunge 500 points intraday on the Dow. It closed the day down 430 points, which wiped away all of the gains the Dow had seen this year!

MarketWatch reports that banks are now bracing for a recession. Two weeks ago, it seemed like everyone in the mainstream media, as I reported, believed there would be no recession and that a soft landing was practically certain. I stuck to my guns. Just like my endless refrain of “no pivot” to all the pivot heads last year, I’ve stayed with inflation is likely going to rise again, forcing the Fed to tighten harder into a deep recession, which means a lot more serious trouble for stocks.

Trying to make a soft landing when yield rates are this inverted for something like 16 months now looks like this:

As a result of today’s thrill ride in Treasury yields, mortgage interest rates also shot up toward 8%. In keeping with this week’s housing theme, another video posted below explains how new-home housing, which escaped the same Fed-caused shortage problem that has swept up existing homes to new reaches for reasons described yesterday and in my last “Deeper Dive,” is now looking ready to collapse.

The producer of the video lays out how overstressed to the breaking point home builders are likely becoming in their efforts to hold down new-home prices. Prices have already fallen, unlike the soaring prices of existing homes that have hit a new all-time high, which is also an inversion of reality because new homes usually sell for more than existing homes, but the producer in the video says a huge avalanche in new home prices is likely to ensue quickly, making this inversion even more grossly distorted unless there rush downward catches existing homes in it wake. This was covered in yesterday’s Wealthion video.

Commercial real estate is already in worse shape than housing, as has said JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon (I always pronounce it “demon” in keeping with the company he keeps). Likewise, Wolf Richter now reports that delinquencies in commercial mortgage-backed securities (Remember those MBS?) have suddenly spiked to “nightmare levels,” and Richter is not one who speaks in hyperbole.

Janet Yellen Claims U.S. Taxpayers Have ‘Duty’ to Defend Ukraine’s Border from Invasion

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday claimed American taxpayers have a “moral duty” to defend Ukraine’s eastern border from invasion by giving aid to the nation.

In a New York Times op-ed published while the secretary visited the nation, Yellen said the American support “is motivated, first and foremost, by a moral duty to come to the aid of a people under attack.”

American lawmakers have so far earmarked more than $110 billion of taxpayer funds to defend the border against a Russian invasion.

“Our work is not over. In fact, it is more vital than ever that we continue supporting the Ukrainians,” she continued. “Ukraine’s military resistance depends on a government that can function effectively, as well as a stable economy that can help finance defense efforts over the long term. By fortifying the ‘home front,’ our economic assistance is helping make possible Ukraine’s stalwart frontline defense against Russia.”

In addition to funding Ukraine’s defense, the Biden administration has imposed approximately 1,500 new and 750 amended sanctions and export controls against Russia, the State Department estimates.

Yellen boasted the sanctions have “systematically degraded Russia’s military-industrial complex and reduced revenues that the Kremlin is relying on to fund its war. As demonstrated by our new actions last week, we will not rest until the war is over.”

Critics claim the measures, along with the inflaming rhetoric, has caused the Russian conflict to escalate and prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from an off-ramp to end the struggle without impacting his domestic political standing.

While championing the defense of Ukraine’s border, Yellen’s op-ed made no mention of the U.S. southern border invasion, instead, she proclaimed the money spent on Ukraine’s border miles away from the continental U.S. would match “our commitment to our ideals — and our capacity to see in others the same desires that animated our own struggles for freedom and justice.”

Approximately 300,000 illegal migrants have slipped past U.S. border patrol and into the interior since the beginning of fiscal 2023. In fiscal year 2022, about two million migrants were encountered by the border patrol.

Yellen is not the only high-profile American official who has offered American taxpayer funds to defend Ukraine. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Friday claimed the security of the United States is dependent on Ukraine’s border security from Russian invasion.

“As my fellow leading Republicans and I have explained, it is not an act of charity for the United States and our NATO allies to help supply the Ukrainian people’s self-defense,” McConnell said. “It is a direct investment in our own core national interests. America is a world power with worldwide interests. Our security and prosperity are deeply intertwined with a secure and stable Europe.”

President Joe Biden has also stated his support for Ukraine’s border defense in a speech in Poland. “We will hold those accountable for those responsible for this war, and will seek justice for the war crimes and crimes against humanity continuing to be committed by the Russians,” he said announcing additional sanctions.

“And we are going to announce more sanctions this week together with our partners,” he added.

Attorneys for Donald Trump on Oct. 4 filed an appeal of a New York judge's summary judgment ruling that the former president's business fraudulently inflated the value of several properties as well as his net worth.

The former president made his appeal to New York's Appellate Division, in the midst of a civil trial in the case that was brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In August, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that the former president fraudulently inflated the value of his properties, including Mar-a-Lago, which the former president has vigorously denied in court this week.

The judge, who last year publicly described President Trump as "a bad guy," also ordered the cancellation of certificates that let some of President Trump's businesses, including the Trump Organization, operate in New York.

Ms. James, a Democrat, is seeking at least $250 million in damages. She also wants the former president banned from running businesses in New York, as well as a five-year commercial real estate ban for President Trump and the Trump Organization.

However, the former president, his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., and others filed a notice of appeal to the Appellate Division, which is the second highest court in New York state.

"This appeal is taken from each and every part of the Order insofar as Appellants are aggrieved," the filing states.

On Oct. 3, Judge Engoron told the courtroom that he believes it's likely that President Trump and the other co-defendants "strongly disagree on" parts of his ruling "and will appeal on this ground."

"This trial is not an opportunity to relitigate what I have already decided. ... that is why we have appeals," the judge said.

The former president has notably appeared in court this week, often speaking to reporters outside the courtroom. On the morning of Oct. 4, he disputed the judge's claims about his net worth and said "my real net worth is much higher than that, much higher than the statement."

"This is just a continuation of the witch hunt that started the day I came down the escalator in Trump Tower," the former president said, adding that the trial is the "beginning of communism in our country."

Gag Order

On Oct. 3, Judge Engoron issued a partial gag order on President Trump and admonished him about a post that the former president had made on Truth Social about the judge's clerk, Alison Greenfield.

"Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable and inappropriate. Consider this statement a gag order forbidding all parties from posting, emailing, or speaking publicly about any of my staff," the judge said.

“The scientific evidence is that we have a water crisis. We are misusing water, polluting water, and changing the whole global hydrological cycle, through what we are doing to the climate. It’s a triple crisis,” Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Johan Rockstrom, who is co-chair of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water (GCEW), told The Guardian.

A Water Action Agenda — voluntary pledges by countries and stakeholders to achieve sustainable development goals — is expected to be adopted at the UN conference being held March 22 to 24 in New York.

“Turning the Tide: A Collective Call to Action,” a report published by the GCEW, puts forth urgent actions humans must take collectively to stop the imminent water crisis. The commission said that if the world does not take these steps, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and climate action in general will fail, the GCEW said in a press release.

According to the report, governments must stop providing agricultural subsidies for the extraction and overuse of water, reported The Guardian. The reckless and wasteful operations of heavy industry like mining and manufacturing must also cease.

The authors of the report point out that water must begin to be managed by countries as a common good, since most depend on each other for the essential resource, and its pollution and overuse threatens the world’s water supplies.

“We need a much more proactive, and ambitious, common good approach. We have to put justice and equity at the centre of this, it’s not just a technological or finance problem,” said GCEW co-chair Mariana Mazzucato, who is a professor at University College London and a lead author of the report, as The Guardian reported.

Rockstrom said most countries get about half their water from the “green” water — the release of water vapor from the leaves of trees during transpiration — of neighboring nations and don’t appreciate the interconnection.

The GCEW report provides seven crucial recommendations, including managing the planet’s water cycle as a common good, stopping the underpricing of water, phasing out $700 billion in subsidies for agriculture and water and enabling investments in water sustainability, access and resilience in low- and middle-income nations through the establishment of Just Water Partnerships.

Clean and adequate water for all vulnerable populations, as well as the restoration of wetlands, depleted groundwater supplies and other freshwater systems should also be prioritized, the report said.

AUSTIN, Texas — Mitchell Wasek, the 28-year-old son of Buc-ee’s co-founder Don Wasek, was arrested on Tuesday and faces 28 charges of invasive visual recordings after he allegedly recorded multiple people using spy camera devices.

According to affidavits obtained by KVUE, two witnesses contacted the Travis County Sheriff's Office in May to report the incidents that allegedly happened at Mitchell Wasek’s family’s lake house on Lake Travis in Spicewood. Records show Mitchell Wasek’s father and Buc-ee’s cofounder, Don Wasek, is the owner of the home.

The witnesses told deputies Mitchell Wasek invited them to the house in May. They said two friends accompanied them and one of those friends, who works in cybersecurity, discovered that a charging port plugged into the wall of their bathroom contained a hidden camera.

After discovering the camera, the group of friends left the house with the device, the documents said. They then used a card reader to review the contents of a micro card from the camera and found dozens of videos of themselves and other people in bathrooms and bedrooms “in various states of undress.”

A female witness told deputies she also found videos of herself and another friend in the bathroom of Mitchell Wasek’s residence in Dallas. The camera and card were handed over to the Dallas Police Department.

The affidavit said the friends were unaware that the recordings existed in the bedroom and bathroom “and indicated they did not consent to being recorded or photographed.”

The Dallas Police Department sent the contents of the camera to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, who found 68 video files containing at least 13 male and female individuals filmed in least eight separate rooms. The documents said the videos showed the individuals were recorded using toilets, showering, changing clothes and/or having sex.

The videos dated back to 2021 and included other locations linked to Mitchell Wasek, including his condo in Austin. Deputies obtained Mitchell Wasek’s Amazon purchase history, which included several hidden camera devices sent to multiple addresses.

Travis County Jail records show Mitchell Masek was released shortly after his arrest on Tuesday on a $10,000 bond per charge, or $280,000. He faces state jail felony charges that could carry a sentence of up to two years.

The Manhattan judge deciding Donald Trump’s $250 million civil fraud trial lost his cool on Wednesday — slamming his hand on the bench and snapping, “This is ridiculous” — as the formerpresident’s lawyers grilled his ex-accountant over inconsistent testimony.

The judge’s annoyed reaction came after Trump’s side claimed that Donald Bender, a partner at accounting firm Mazars USA, was evading their questions.

The attorneys had also repeatedly insisted they needed to meticulously go through Trump’s financial records with Bender “year by year.”

“Don’t waste time,” Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron said sternly.

Trump attorney Jesus Suarez had spent part of Tuesday afternoon and all of Wednesday morning cross-examining Bender — and said he would continue with the questioning through the end of the day.

“This is ridiculous!” Engoron said, hitting his hand on the bench. “Mr. Bender isn’t on trial here.”

Another Trump attorney, Christopher Kise, said theonly things Bender “seems to recall are what the government wants him to recall.”

“We need to be allowed to parse the evidence — we didn’t bring this case,” Kise argued.

Alina Habba, also a Trump lawyer, chimed in, “We haven’t got one answer from him … he has no memory as we sit here.”

Kise conceded that they would try “to streamline” the cross-examination before the judge reiterated: “Let’s not waste time.”

Over the course of testimony Wednesday — the third day of trial in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit — Engoron checked Trump’s legal team twice more, at one point suggesting they were pandering to the press and carrying out their defense as if a jury were present.

“There is no jury here,” he said — reportedly prompting an exasperated response fromTrump, 77* who threw his arms in the air while sitting with his attorneys at the defense table.

“Who are you talking to — me, the press or the audience?” Engoron asked Kise at another point.

Similarly, a lawyer for the AG’s Office was shocked to hear that Bender would be questioned by Trump’s side for the rest of the day.

“There’s no jury. I don’t know who we’re performing for,” the attorney was heard saying.

The 2024 Republican presidential front-runner — who has chosen to attend the trial since it kicked off in Lower Manhattan on Monday — left for Florida after Wednesday’s lunch break, CNN reported.

It was not immediately clear if or when Trump would return to court, though he has said he would testify should he be called to the witness stand.

Engoron seemed in a lighter mood after the lunch break and cracked a joke about AG attorney Kevin Wallace’s birthday, saying: “Today is a very important day.”

When James — who has attended the whole trial so far — returned after lunch, she said that “the Trump show is over.”

James said Trump’s appearance at the civil trial — which he’s not required to attend, unlike in criminal cases — was a “political stunt” and a “fundraising stop.”

“I will not be bullied,” the AG said of the former president’s repeated personal attacks on her. “Justice will be served.”

In the afternoon,the AG’s Office interrupted Bender’s testimony to take a witness out of turn.

Camron Harris, an auditor at accounting firm Whitley Penn who handled Trump’s books in 2020, testified in the afternoon that “the client’s responsible” for the statement of financial condition – documents which James claims Trump lied on from 2011 through 2021.

Harris testified that Eric Trump — another defendant in the case who was present in the courtroom in the morning — “set the tone at the top” for the board of trustees at the Trump Organization.

Bender continued testifying after Harris’ testimony wrapped.

Coming into court Wednesday, Trump went on a three-minute rant ripping James for allegedly using the prosecution against him in her failed bid for governor.“This is a railroading and it’s the beginning of communism in our country,” Trump said. Upon leaving, Trump again went on a tirade for several minutes, saying the case was “rigged.”

Some migrants in Chicago were locked out of a police station where they were being housed as they gathered on a crowded sidewalk Wednesday with all their belongings, as the city was preparing for more arrivals.

Outside the 1st District police station on 17th and State streets, migrants, along withmattresses, furniture, carpetsand personal items were crammed on a sidewalk, Fox Chicago reported.

The doors to the police station were lockedand the building lobby was empty, the news report said.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Chicago Police Department and city officials. A Venezuelan migrant told the news outlet that he hadbeen staying in the lobbyof the police station but that it had been closed down Wednesday.

He said themigrants were told to move their stuff outside and a portable toilet was placed on the sidewalk. Several police stations in the city have been housing migrants who have arrived since last year.

Shelters are currently housing more than 9,800 migrants, while another 3,000 are still waiting to be placed somewhere. More than 17,000 migrants have come to Chicago since last August. (Only 17,000?)

Many have been bussed from Texas as part of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to relocate migrants from border towns to so-called “sanctuary” cities to bring attention to the influx of asylum seekers.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Wednesday announced that he plans to visit the US-Mexico border. He did not disclose any specifics of the planned visit.

“So, going to the border is to make sure that everybody knows that my administration is committed to making sure that we are putting together the full force of government at every single level to ensure that these families, who, by the way, they’re not illegal, they’re asylum seekers, they are protected by international law,” Johnson said at a news conference.

He said the city was expecting as many as 22 buses full of migrants on Wednesday. On the same day, residents on Chicago’s South Side also announced alawsuit against the city in an effort to stop the housing of migrants in schools, parks and police stations, the news outlet said.

“It’s not about the migrants themselves, it’s about the city’s response to them and the lies and the mistruths told by the administration. And they are not working in the best interest of Chicago. If you call it a humanitarian effort, they shouldn’t be sleeping in police stations on the floor,” organizer Brian Mullins said.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker joined a growing number of Democrats who have criticized Biden’s border policies when he sent a letter to the president on Monday with a list of demands outlining how the federal government’s response to the border crisis is inadequate.

Pritzker complained that more than 15,000 migrants have been shipped “like cargo” to Illinois from border states “in a dehumanizing attempt to score political points.”

Pritzker wrote that the number of migrant arrivals is “overwhelming our ability to provide aid to the refugee population.” “Unfortunately, the welcome and aid Illinois has been providing to these asylum seekershas not been matched with support by the federal government. Most critically, the government’s lack of intervention and coordination at the border has created an untenable situation for Illinois,” the letter states.

A group of thieves stole at least 60 generators from former President Donald Trump’s National Doral Miami golf resort after hitting the property twice in just a matter of hours on Monday — two weeks before it’s slated to hold an LIV Golf tournament.

Surveillance video shows a white Ford F-150 truck enter the resort’s maintenance area around 5 p.m. — which is nothing out of the ordinary, except that the driver made off with 30 generators, police said.

“The incident that occurred in the daylight was an area that was not secured,” Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez told WPLG. “These individuals posed as construction workers that were able to enter and gain access to the area.”

Photos show the bed of the white truck filled with the loot as they left.

Five hours later, cops said, the thieves returned in a white panel van and jacked another 30 generators.

“During the evening hours, they actually cut some fencing and were able to access the same area,” Lopez said.

The generators and other equipment had been stored at the resort ahead of an LIV Golf tournament it is scheduled to host in a few weeks, police said.

Security staff was on-site at the time of both robberies, cops said.

Police said they have not yet determined whether the thieves had assistance from the inside but said detectives have already identified multiple leads.

As many as four people may have been involved. Police said the theft appears to be linked to others throughout Miami-Dade County.

“We’re not really, right now, making any determination, but we are aggressively looking at identifying these individuals,” Lopez told the outlet.

Former ESPN host Sage Steele said that interviewing President Biden was “the saddest thing” because he seemed confused and “couldn’t finish his sentences.”

“He struggled,” Steele said of the oldest president in US history who “trailed off” on topics even more than two years ago.

“So forget about politics. I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” Steele told Bill Maher on his “Club Ransom” podcast Sunday, admitting she thinks Biden is “a terrible president.”

“However, that made me sad,” she said of his confusion.

“The human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now, to me, is heartbreaking,” she said of the now-80-year-old president facing escalating pressure over his age and a series of gaffes as he runs to stay in office.

Steele told the comedian that she interviewed Biden in March 2021 for a pre-recorded segment ahead of the MLB’s Opening Day that year.

“It was satellite, it wasn’t in person,” she explained, noting that they were having technical issues and she had to stall the now-80-year-old president as they waited for the issues to be resolved. “So I had to like, BS. I had to chitchat, waiting for us to start rolling.”

Steele said she could not see the president as his staffers kept a lens over the camera “until the last second, but you can hear and we’re chitchatting.

“So I can hear him and he goes, ‘What is this for? Wait — what’s her name?”Steele recounted, as Maher started laughing.

“I was going, ‘Oh my God!’ And then [an aide] said, ‘SportsCenter, ESPN.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, OK.”

At that point, the president started to tell her about his own football career. In high school, Biden was a standout halfback and wide receiver. He also briefly played football as a freshman at the University of Delaware.

“And so he started to tell football stories of his greatness,” Steele recounted, noting she still could not see him.“He goes, ‘I have the best hands.’ What do you say to that?”Steele asked.

“And here’s the saddest thing —his voice just trailed off.He said, ‘I was good,’ and then he went silent, and he goes…‘Uh, never mind.’

“I thought it was so sad because I realized that’s why he was in the basement during the whole election cycle — because even then he couldn’t finish his sentences, he struggled.

“So forget about politics. I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” she revealed. “However, that made me sad.” Earlier in the discussion with Maher, Steele saidshe thinks Biden is a “terrible president.

“However, forget that — the human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now with him, to me, is heartbreaking.And it’s inexcusable by the family when you knew during the election.”

Steele’s podcast appearance came just days after Maher told Biden he should drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Tracking along a narrow path, the shadow of a new moon will race across North, Central, and South America, on October 14. When viewed from the shadow path the apparent size of the lunar disk will not quite completely cover the Sun though. Instead, the moon in silhouette will appear during the minutes of totality surrounded by a fiery ring, an annular solar eclipse more dramatically known as a ring of fire eclipse. This striking time lapse sequence from May of 2012 illustrates the stages of a ring of fire eclipse. From before eclipse start until sunset, they are seen over the iconic buttes of planet Earth's Monument Valley. Remarkably, the October 14 ring of fire eclipse will also be visible over Monument Valley, beginning after sunrise in the eastern sky.

Scientists in the United States are excited to use the October "ring of fire" eclipse as valuable practice for a total eclipse in the Americas next year.

North America will experience an annular "ring of fire" solar eclipse on Oct. 14 that crosses eight U.S. states in between Oregon and Texas. We have full details about how to watch in-person and online here, including selecting the right equipment to observe the sun safely.

An annular eclipse occurs when the moon is further away from Earth, causing it to be slightly smaller than the sun in the sky. The smaller moon is unable to block the entire disk of the sun, creating a "ring of fire" for a few minutes when the moon passes in front of the sun.

NSF plans annular eclipse outreach events in both the Albuquerque, New Mexico and Boulder, Colorado areas, including partnerships with NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the University of Colorado's Fiske Planetarium, Albuquerque's International Balloon Fiesta and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science that will bring in thousands of members of the public.

Science will be front and center as well, with the research team using the annular eclipse to get ready for totality. For example, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory in Maui, Hawaii will be entering its operational phase just in time for both eclipses, according to Carrie Black, a program officer at NSF's astronautical science division that oversees Inouye's operations.

Inouye, the world's largest solar telescope, will not be in the eclipse path during either October 2023's or April 2024's events. But Inouye will provide a high-resolution "unobstructed view of the sun while the eclipse is happening," Black said. Inouye's results can then be compared with other telescopes to get a fuller picture of solar activity and its effects on Earth, particularly with the sun at a height of solar activity.

"It's like a microscope," Black said of the powerful Inouye, "essentially to zoom in and look at features we wouldn't be able to see otherwise without this type of high resolution — and then connecting it to other (telescope) observations."

Scientists generally, said NSF's Lisa Winter, will be able to view a very active corona — or upper atmosphere of the sun — during the precious minutes that the sun is nearly completely blocked by the moon. The sun is nearing its maximum of solar activity in its 11-year-cycle, unlike the last U.S. total solar eclipse of 2017, meaning that "the corona will be very active this time around," said Winter, who is NSF's program director for solar-terrestrial research.

Solar activity has an immense impact on the ionosphere, which is a layer of Earth's atmosphere that interacts with electromagnetic radiation from above and below its extent. These interactions affect the propagation of radio signals.

With the sun mostly blacked out temporarily by the eclipse, NSF will be carefully watching what happens "when you suddenly turn off that X-ray and the ultraviolet" rays from the sun that usually filter into the ionosphere and affect its extent, said Mangala Sharma, the foundation's program director for space weather (the ionosphere actually expands and contracts depending on how much energy it is absorbing from the sun)

The ham radio community will also help with ionospheric studies during the eclipse, using their GPS receivers to help professional scientists track changes in that layer of the Earth's atmosphere. "That's going to be useful in moving the science forward, and also getting the excitement of the eclipse out into the public," Sharma said.

Additionally, scientists will be watching local weather to see how it is affected by the lack of solar radiation. "The moon's shadow traverses across the atmosphere at supersonic speeds, so things change pretty fast (and) very quickly throughout the eclipse region," Sharma said.

In April next year, scientists will chase the total eclipse in NSF/National Center for Atmospheric Research Gulfstream-V aircraft to study the elusive "low corona," referring to the parts of the upper atmosphere of the sun that are not observable from space.

Black called the experience of seeing this low corona "magical" – so much so that scientists "spend their whole careers traveling around the world to try to find these total solar eclipses, so that you can see this (low) region that we're particularly interested in."

Once this eclipse campaign is over, NSF says no other total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States until 2044 — that's 20 years after April's event.

More than 170,000 UFO sightings reported since 1974, nonprofit says

More and more people are apparently reporting UFO sightings across the globe.

That's according to the National UFO Reporting Center, which is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1974 by UFO investigator Robert J. Gribble.

A list on the nonprofit's website includes reported sightings dating as far back as 1946.

Throughout its history, the Center has processed over 170,000 reports, and has distributed its information to thousands of individuals," the website notes.

The list notes more than 1,900 people in Maryland alone have reported seeing something in the sky during the last two decades, with at least 100 people in the state coming forward recently. They described the UFOs as a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Some of the reports included images of the objects.

"It's heartening to me that so many people are coming forward now. We are getting significantly more reports than just six months or a year ago," Peter Davenport who directs the National UFO Reporting Center told WJZ.

"I don't know what the future has in store for us, but I am encouraged that more people are coming forward and the government recognizes the UFO phenomenon that's something worthy of their attention," he also said.

The media outlet noted that a majority of the sightings happened along the East and West Coasts in the United States, as well as the Middle East and the South China Sea.

One of the latest reports apparently occurred in Gambrills, Maryland on September 4.

We saw a bright white and blue light with very long bright tail and no noise," one person wrote. "Thought it was a firework at first but then realized it was too high and didn't hear it go off."

Another took place in Pasadena, Maryland on August 16. The person reported seeing the object fly over a home not once, but twice.

"I could not make out what was on top but there was 4 spinning disks underneath and each disk was a different color," according to the post. "I was outside with my dog and (heard) a loud noise in the sky. When I looked up I saw 4 large disk(s) spinning ... As it was getting farther away we saw that things were shooting out of it. It looked like stars with blinking lights on each one. Then there was a big flash of light and that 4 disc thing was gone but all the blinking things that looked like stars were left behind. Then the whole sky filled with these blinking things . They were in groups of 3 in a boomerang formation. I counted over 13 sets of 3. I went in the house because my children were scared. After I calmed them down and went back outside all the blinking things were gone."

China plans to expand its space station to six modules from three in coming years, offering astronauts from other nations an alternative platform for near-earth missions as the NASA-led International Space Station (ISS) nears the end of its lifespan.

The operational lifetime of the Chinese space station will be more than 15 years, the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a unit of China's main space contractor, said at the 74th International Astronautical Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday (Oct 4).

That would be more than the 10 years previously announced.

China's self-built space station, also known as Tiangong, or Celestial Palace in Chinese, has been fully operational since late 2022, hosting a maximum of three astronauts at an orbital altitude of up to 450km.

At 180 metric tonnes after its expansion to six modules, Tiangong is still just 40 per cent of the mass of the ISS, which can hold a crew of seven astronauts. But the ISS, in orbit for more than two decades, is expected to be decommissioned after 2030, about the same time China has said it expects to become "a major space power".

Chinese state media said last year as Tiangong became fully operational that China would be no "slouch" as the ISS headed toward retirement, adding that "several countries" had asked to send their astronauts to the Chinese station.

But in a blow to China's aspirations for space diplomacy, the European Space Agency (ESA) said this year it did not have the budgetary or "political" green light to participate in Tiangong, shelving a years-long plan for a visit by European astronauts.

"Giving up cooperation with China in the manned space domain is clearly short-sighted, which reveals that the US-led camp confrontation has led to a new space race," the Global Times, a nationalist Chinese tabloid, wrote at the time.

NATO member suspends military aid to Ukraine

A party opposed to sending weapons to Kiev recently prevailed in Slovakia’s parliamentary election

Slovakia is halting military aid to Ukraine due to opposition from political parties currently negotiating to form a new government, the Dennik N news outlet reported on Wednesday, citing presidential spokesman Martin Strizinec.

The official told the outlet that the Slovak head of state, President Zuzana Caputova, pointed out that there is the need to “respect the results of democratic elections.” The victorious Slovak Social Democracy (SMER-SD) party has promised voters “not a single round [of ammunition] for Ukraine.”

“It would not be a good precedent to decide to provide military equipment in such a situation when there is a change of political power after any election,” Strizinec said.

After winning the parliamentary election on Sunday, SMER-SD leader Robert Fico, a former prime minister, told journalists that “Slovakia and the people of Slovakia have bigger problems than Ukraine.”

He added that if his party successfully forms a government, it would still be open to helping Ukraine, butonly in a humanitarian way. (How can they be sure it’s used for humanitarian help by Ukes?)

Last week, Kiev hosted the International Industries Defense Forum with participants from 30 countries, where Ukrainian officials went on a “charm offensive directed at weapons-makers,” Politico reported. An unnamed European official told the agency that there was no way to “keep giving from their own stockpiles” because they had already sent Ukraine everything that does not endanger their own security.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Ukrainian government will be unable to pay civil servants if the US Congress fails to approve continued financing for Kiev. (Tough shit! The end is near!)

The European Commission ex-president warned against making unrealistic promises to Kiev amid reports of upcoming membership talks

Deep-rooted and widespread corruption means thatUkraine will not be able to join the European Union any time soon, former President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has said. In addition, earlier this week, Politico reported that the Biden Administration is putting pressure on Kiev to combat graft more effectively.

In an interview with Germany’s Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper published on Thursday, Juncker warned that Brussels “should not make any false promises to the people in Ukraine who are up to their neck in suffering. He criticized those within the EU “who are leading the Ukrainians to believe that they could become a member state immediately.” According to the former official, such a scenario would be detrimental to the bloc and Ukraine.

“Those who have dealt with Ukraine know that this is a country that is corrupt at all levels of society,” Juncker charged. He noted that the Eastern European nation would first need to conduct “massive” reforms.

The former president of the European Commission spoke in favor of “partial accession” for aspiring nations, which would allow them access to some of the benefits of European integration, provided that they made progress on the path of reform.

Juncker’s warning came shortly after Politico, citing anonymous diplomats, reported that the incumbent EU leadership would formally announce the start of membership talks with Ukraine as early as December.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the same outlet claimed to have seen the “sensitive but not classified” version of the US State Department’s ‘Integrated Country Strategy’ for Ukraine. In it, American officials allegedly warned leadership in Kiev that “perceptions of high-level corruption” could “undermine the Ukrainian public’s and foreign leaders’ confidence in the war-time government.”

According to Politico’s sources, US President Joe Biden’s administration is pressing Ukraine to step up its existing anti-graft efforts. However, it is doing so quietly to avoid handing political ammunition to Republicans who want to withhold American aid to Kiev over corruption concerns. (Ironic the most corrupt Admin and President mandating less corruption, maybe it’s a bird call, “we need more corruption”!)

The Biden administration has reportedly clarified that future economic aid could be tied to reforms that “make Ukraine a more attractive place for private investment.”

On Monday, Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak alleged that his country had been given a “yellow card” for corruption by the US.

Ukraine has for years been ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, as of 2022, the country ranked 116th out of 180.

(All of EU knows this but they keep promising membership, when they know it can’t be accepted. I have UN corruption reports on Ukraine going back into the late 1990s and 2000s, they will never solve this fixture.)

Russia not looking for ‘new lands’ – Putin

The president stressed that the Ukraine conflict is not about territory

The conflict with Ukraine is not the result of a territorial dispute, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech at the Valdai International Discussion Club on Thursday.

Putin stressed that Russia is already the largest country in the world and therefore is not seeking to obtain new territory. He noted that Russia still has a lot of work to do in developing Siberia and the Far East.

“This is not a territorial conflict and is not even the establishment of a regional geopolitical balance,” the president said. “This question is much broader and more fundamental. We are talking about the principles of a new world order.”

The Russian leader insisted that a lasting peace can only be established when “everyone feels safe and knows that their opinion is respected.”

Elsewhere in his speech, Putin said that Russia was not the one that initiated the conflict in Ukraine, but is instead trying to put an end to it.

“We were not the ones who organized a bloody coup in Kiev; it wasn’t us who intimidated the Crimeans and Sevastopol residents with Nazi-style ethnic purges. We weren’t the ones who tried to force the Donbass to obey using shellings and bombings. We were not the ones who threatened violence against those who wanted to speak their native language,” Putin said, stressing that it was Kiev that used tanks and artillery to wage war against the Donbass.

Despite civilians and children being killed in Donbass long before Russia launched its military operation last year, no other countries, especially in the West, paid any attention to this or shed any tears for them, the president said.

“The war started by the Kiev regime with the active, direct support of the West is now in its tenth year,” Putin noted.“The special military operation is aimed at stopping it.”

The four-day 20th anniversary meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club has been taking place in Sochi since October 2. The end of the forum is marked by a plenary session. Its participants include politicians, scientists, and social activists, including foreign guests.

EU can’t compensate Ukraine for missing US aid – Borrell

The bloc can only do so much to cover Kiev’s expenses, its foreign policy chief has said

The EU cannot fully replace US support for Ukraine even if it boosts its aid programs, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has said. The warning comes after the US Congress declined to include Ukraine assistance in a stopgap spending bill last week.

“Ukraine needs the support of the European Union, which will certainly be increased, but also the support of the United States,” the senior official said on Thursday as he arrived at the European Political Community summit in Granada, Spain. (Too bad, the US is not backing this shithole, Americans are tired of the corruption and waste; and Americans are dying because of Joe.)

He stressed that Europe could not fill the gap left by the US and expressed hope that Washington would reverse the situation.

The flow of American funding was disrupted last week after a Republican push to reduce budgetary spending. A 45-day temporary budget, which was adopted as a compromise solution, allocated no money for Ukraine at all.

In August, the administration of US President Joe Biden asked lawmakers to provide an additional $24 billion to support Kiev. Amid the congressional deadlock, the White House sought to ensure that the flow of cash would not be interrupted.

The crisis in the US was exacerbated this week when Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House speaker. Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a motion to remove him from the position over an alleged secret deal with the Biden administration to keep Ukraine assistance flowing.

Meanwhile, theEU is also struggling to maintain a consensus on sending money to its eastern neighbor. Last week, Hungary suggested splitting a proposed €50 billion ($52.4 billion) aid package in the bloc’s long-term budget into two installments, with the second half pending further evaluation, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

Budapest has been blocking €500 million in military aid for Ukraine since May. The European Commission is reportedly willing to release billions of euros in funds for Hungary in order to get the country on board. The funds were frozen last December over rule-of-law criticisms.

Borrell announced that Brussels was seeking to add €5 billion in multi-year defense assistance when he met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Monday. He also vowed to maintain the assistance regardless of what happens in Washington.

EU leaders are meeting in Granada to discuss the bloc’s future spending and plans for future expansion. A reform supported by Germany and France would introduce a multi-tier membership system to accommodate candidates based on their merits. Ukraine, which aspires to become a member, has insisted on full-fledged participation, saying it cannot accept anything less.

So, if you have a vacation or rental home in Florida or are considered a part-time resident you will be seeing a surcharge up to 50% in your property insurance.

The state of Florida considers someone a full-time resident of the state if they spend at least six months and one day in the state per year. Citizens Insurance by way of OIR approval considers residency if the insurer or a tenant live in the property for nine months out of the year.

So, by December 16, 2023, if policyholders can’t confirm that their insured property is a primary residence, then they can expect to see and increase of up to 50 percent on their insurance rate at renewal.

Ron DeSantis has created this Inaurance crisis which will now be a Housing crisis. People are not going to be able to afford insurance rate increases on their Florida properties and homes where insurance rates are already the highest in the nation.

California Governor Signs Bill Banning Hand Counting of Ballots in Most Elections

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Oct. 4 signed a bill that bans hand counts in nearly all elections in California, drawing opposition from at least one county.

Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, signed Assembly Bill 969, authored by fellow Democrat Assemblywoman Gail Pellerin. The bill took effect immediately.

The bill forbids any election officials from performing a manual vote count in an irregular election with more than 1,000 registered voters or a regular election with more than 5,000 voters.

Exceptions are available to officials who receive approval from the California secretary of state. Other exceptions are available in the wake of a natural disaster or during states of emergency.

The bill “puts in important guardrails to ensure that California’s elections remain accessible, accurate, and auditable,” Ms. Pellerin wrote in a social media post after Mr. Newsom signed the legislation.

“By clarifying the conditions under which a manual count may be performed, AB 969 ensures that no California voter will be disenfranchised by the actions and decisions of ill-informed political actors. AB 969 also requires the use of a federally qualified, state-certified voting system,” she added.

The state Assembly passed the bill in September in a 62–14 vote, following a 31–6 vote in the state Senate. All the no votes came from Republicans.

Groups that supported the bill include the League of Women Voters of California.

Without such a bill, the organization said a preference for hand-counted votes could proliferate. “There is the threat that these costly and destabilizing actions will be repeated in other California counties,” the organization said previously.

The Election Integrity Project California is among the organizations that opposed the bill.

“AB 969 dictatorially removes from the table any election model other than one fully reliant on the very technology that so many people world-wide not only believe but know to be unreliable and manipulatable,” the group said recently.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Newsom told ABC that hand counting is not realistic.

“It’s not just impractical to hand-count, but it harms the election process. It will cost more and slow down our election results significantly,” Erin Mellon, the spokeswoman, said.

“Unfounded conspiracy theories have undermined our elections. California is focused on ensuring free and fair elections,” she added.
