Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Quantum Detector

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California developed a device that can count huge numbers of single photons with incredible precision. The Performance-Enhanced Array for Counting Optical Quanta (PEACOQ) detector could transform how quantum computers, located thousands of miles apart, exchange huge quantities of quantum data.

“Transmitting quantum information over long distances has, so far, been very limited,” said Ioana Craiciu, PEACOQ project team member, a postdoctoral scholar at JPL. “A new detector technology like the PEACOQ can measure single photons with a precision of a fraction of a nanosecond enables sending quantum information at higher rates and farther distances.”

Glenn Research Center’s Quantum Simulations

The quantum communications team at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland studies technologies and architectures that can enable space-based quantum networks.

The team, led by Principal Investigator Dr. John Lekki, characterizes state-of-the-art quantum devices in the laboratory and feed that performance information into models, so that hardware performance can be analyzed within space-based network architectures. This verification and validation of quantum hardware and network models is the focus of the NASA Quantum Metrology Laboratory (NQML).

The NQML team, which often includes students participating in the SCaN Internship Project, performs experimental and theoretical activities. Chris Nadeau, a second-year SCaN intern, optimizes quantum entanglement swap simulations. He writes code, researches the mathematical underpinnings for potential features of the simulation, and develops test cases to verify the simulation output.

“We’re trying to model satellite communications that utilize entangled photons as carriers of quantum information to transmit messages as opposed to the current classical communications methods,” said Nadeau. “This is of particular interest due to the security guaranteed by the principles of quantum mechanics, and simulations of such networks are key to the eventual development of real-world quantum communications across long distances.”

Ames Research Center’s QuAIL Team

NASA’s Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL), at Ames Research Center in California, assess the potential of quantum computers. The QuAIL team's goal is to demonstrate that quantum computing may someday dramatically improve NASA’s space exploration endeavors.

Dr. Eleanor Rieffel and her team of engineers conduct theoretical and empirical analysis of quantum computing and algorithms, and investigates their applications with challenging computational problems.

World Quantum Day engages the public in the understanding and discussion of quantum science and technology. Quantum helps us understand nature at its most significant level, develop technologies that are crucial for everyday life, and potentially revolutionize the future of science and technology.

Flaw 2: COVID-related myocarditis risk among the unvaccinated is, of course, unrelated to vaccination. Because the study population consists of only vaccinated individuals, this creates an illogical dependence of Patone et al.'s computation of the incidence of positive-test-associated myocarditis among the unvaccinated on the decision to later vaccinate or not made by a very small number of individuals in England—those individuals, ages 13 and up, hospitalized with positive-test-associated myocarditis during the study period while unvaccinated. We know 114 of those individuals later chose to vaccinate, but we do not know how many chose not to vaccinate. What if none had chosen to vaccinate? Then, the numerator 114 in Patone et al.'s main analysis of incidence would be 0 and the study would have shown 0 risk of positive-test-associated myocarditis among the unvaccinated. On the other hand, if, during the study period, those (in England, age 13 and up) hospitalized while unvaccinated with positive-test-associated myocarditis later chose to vaccinate with higher probability than a “generic” unvaccinated person having had a positive COVID test, then Patone et al.'s incidence quotient Q will overstate risk.

Design Flaws 1 and 2, described above, were introduced into Patone et al.'s study at a late stage—after nearly all study data had been collected and analyzed. Reading the preprint version (3) of Patone et al.'s published paper (1) reveals that, as originally designed, Patone et al.'s study did not include an analysis of the incidence of positive-test-associated myocarditis among the unvaccinated. Rather, positive-test-associated myocarditis events, pre-first-dose and post-first-dose, were combined to compute myocarditis incidence following a positive test independent of vaccination status.

Flaw 3: Patone et al.'s description of their study in (1) doesn't include sufficient details for a reader or reviewer to determine how baseline myocarditis incidence is computed. For instance, it appears that baseline incidence depends on “seasonal variation” in myocarditis infection as well as hospital-admission pressure [(1), “Study Design and Oversight,” p. 744]; however, no details are included to explain how these factors influence baseline rates. There is evidence that myocarditis is not seasonal (4).

The eyes of a beer-drinking nation will be on a White House picnic table this evening.

(Soundbite of bottle top popping and beer pouring)

WERTHEIMER: President Obama plans to sit down and share a cold one with a black professor and the white police sergeant who arrested the Harvard academic. The incident became a national discussion, and the president hopes to settle things down. Nothing is that simple, of course, not even the choice of beer.

NPR'S Scott Horsley reports.

SCOTT HORSLEY: The president wants to lower the temperature. And what better way to do that than by sharing a frosty beer with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the man who put Gates in handcuffs, Jim Crowley? But what beer? In a story already foaming with distinctions of race and class, would beer be the great equalizer or just another wedge?

Mr. ROBERT GIBBS (White House Spokesman): As I understand it, professor Gates said he liked Red Stripe, and I believe Sergeant Crowley mentioned to the president that he liked Blue Moon. So we'll have the gamut covered.

HORSLEY: White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president himself will drink Bud Lite. It's as if Mr. Obama, having gone out on a limb once already in this case, has now decided to play it safe. Industry consultant Tom Pirko of Bevmark notes Bud Lite is the most popular beer in America. Pirko suspects Mr. Obama is aiming for an all-American, Everyman appeal. Never mind that Anheuser-Busch, which makes Bud Lite, is now owned by Belgians and Brazilians. The professor and the policeman's beers are equally symbolic, Pirko says - Red Stripe with its Jamaican pedigree, and Blue Moon striving for craft beer credibility, though it's actually made by Coors. All three men at the table have their roles to play, Pirko says. They're drinking politics, not beer.
