Scientists have been abuzz with excitement ever since it became clear that CRISPR would unlock a new world of powerful gene editing techniques. Teams around the world have experimented with CRISPR-based gene editing techniques in human embryos, but no one has allowed those embryos to become living, breathing people — until now. A Chinese team claims to have used CRISPR to make two infants that are resistant to HIV infection.

The CRISPR/Cas9 system was derived from bacterial cells and allows scientists to make precise cuts in DNA. Cas9 is the enzyme that actually makes the cut, but it needs CRISPR DNA sequences as a guide to find the right location in a genome. Researchers have used CRISPR in the lab to neuter disease-carrying mosquitoes, halt HIV replication inside cells, and engineer bacteria that can eat plastic. There is no scientific consensus on the ethics of editing genes in human embryos for the purpose of reproduction, but now we may be seeing the world’s first “designer babies.”

According to He Jiankui of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, his team used CRISPR to edit the genes of human embryos that eventually became twin girls Lulu and Nana. The change to the twins’ CCR5 gene causes their cells to carry a mutated form of the CCR5 protein. This mutation should protect them from HIV infection.

In a video posted after the announcement, He Jiankui explains why they chose to focus on HIV first. While medication can control HIV and prevent the development of AIDS, we know some people won’t develop an infection even when exposed to the virus. HIV uses CCR5 to gain access to white blood cells, where it replicates and goes on to infect more cells. As a result, the CCR5 gene is one of the most studied in the human genome, and we’ve identified a variant that blocks HIV. Those with the mutated CCR5 gene don’t have the matching cell surface protein for HIV, so the virus particles can’t get into cells. The gene editing procedure in China replicated this mutation in day-old embryos to imbue the resulting babies with the same resistance.

The team created 16 edited embryos and implanted 11 of them in women before the twin pregnancy occurred. He Jiankui says the twins are healthy and have undergone genetic testing to ensure the modified gene was present and no other genes had been changed.

The daring Chinese biophysicist who created the world’s first gene-edited children has been set free after three years in a Chinese prison.

He Jiankui created shock waves in 2018 with the stunning claim that he’d altered the genetic makeup of IVF embryos and implanted them into a woman’s uterus, leading to the birth of twin girls. A third child was born the following year.

Following international condemnation of the experiment, He was placed under home arrest and then detained. In December 2019, he was convicted by a Chinese court, which said the researcher had “deliberately violated” medical regulations and had “rashly applied gene editing technology to human assisted reproductive medicine.”

His release from prison was confirmed by people familiar with the situation and He answered his mobile phone when contacted early today. “It’s not convenient to talk right now,” he said before hanging up.

He’s team from the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen made use of CRISPR, the versatile genetic engineering tool, to alter the girls’ DNA so that they would be resistant to infection by HIV.

It’s unclear whether He has plans to return to scientific research in China or another country. People who know him have described the biophysicist, who was trained at Rice University and Stanford, as idealistic, naïve, and ambitious.

Before his world collapsed around him, He believed he’d created a new way to “control the HIV epidemic” that would be considered for a Nobel Prize.

The existence of the CRISPR baby project was uncovered by MIT Technology Review on the eve of an international genome-editing summit in Hong Kong, held in November 2018. CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago prosecutor said Monday that she’s dropping sex-abuse charges against singer R. Kelly following federal convictions in two courts that should guarantee the disgraced R&B star will be locked up for decades.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced the decision a day ahead of a hearing related to state charges accusing him of sexually abusing four people, three of whom were minors. She said she would ask a judge to dismiss the indictments Tuesday.

Foxx, who in 2019 had pleaded with women and girls to come forward so she could pursue charges against Kelly, acknowledged that the decision “may be disappointing” to his accusers.

“Mr. Kelly is potentially looking at the possibility of never walking out of prison again for the crimes that he’s committed,” the prosecutor said, referring to his federal convictions. “While today’s cases are no longer being pursued, we believe justice has been served.”

Since Kelly was indicted in Cook County in 2019, federal juries in Chicago and New York have convicted him of a raft of crimes, including child pornography, enticement, racketeering and sex trafficking related to allegations that he victimized women and girls.

Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, is serving a 30-year prison sentence in the New York case and awaits sentencing on Feb. 23 in Chicago federal court. He is appealing those convictions. Based on the New York sentence alone, the 56-year-old won’t be eligible for release until he is around 80.

Foxx said she reached out to Kelly’s lawyer two weeks ago to indicate that charges might be dropped. She also spoke to the women whose allegations were at the heart of the case.

Foxx expressed praise for the “courage it took for them to come forward.”

Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, said she was “pleased” with the prosecution’s decision to drop charges.

“He only has one life to give. So I don’t know how many sentences upon sentences would satisfy people,” Bonjean said.

Lanita Carter, who said she was sexually assaulted by R. Kelly in February 2003, said she was “extremely disappointed” with the news.

“I have spent nearly 20 years hoping that my abuser would be brought to justice for what he did to me. With today’s announcement, all hope of justice for my case is gone,” Carter said, adding that she trusted Foxx and her office with her story and has spent four years steeling herself to face Kelly to no avail.

“Justice has been denied for me,” she said.

Prosecutors sometimes choose to go ahead with more trials out of a concern that convictions elsewhere could be reversed during appeals. They see an opportunity for additional convictions as insurance.

“We didn’t do a monetary cost-benefit analysis,” Foxx said, adding, however, that resources spent on a trial now could instead be used “in advocacy for other survivors of sexual abuse.”

Another sexual-misconduct case is pending in Hennepin County, Minnesota, where the Grammy Award-winner faces solicitation charges. That case, too, has been on hold while the federal cases played out. Minnesota prosecutors haven’t said whether they still intend to take Kelly to trial.

Known for his smash hit “I Believe I Can Fly” and for sex-infused songs such as “Bump n’ Grind,” Kelly sold millions of albums even after allegations about his abuse of young girls began circulating publicly in the 1990s. He beat child pornography charges in Chicago in 2008, when a jury acquitted him.

Widespread outrage over Kelly’s sexual misconduct didn’t emerge until the #MeToo reckoning and the release of the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” in early 2019.

Foxx announced the Cook County charges months before the federal cases in New York and Chicago. Foxx’s office alleged he repeatedly sought out girls for sex, including one he encountered at her 16th birthday party and another who met Kelly while he was on trial in 2008.

Federal prosecutors in New York told jurors at his 2021 trial that Kelly used his entourage of managers and aides to meet girls and keep them obedient, an operation that prosecutors said amounted to a criminal enterprise.

Last year, prosecutors at Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago portrayed him as a master manipulator who used his fame and wealth to reel in star-struck fans, some of them minors, to sexually abuse then discard them. Four accusers testified.

While prosecutors in that case won convictions on six of the 13 counts against him in that case, the government lost the marquee count — that Kelly and his then-business manager successfully rigged his 2008 child pornography trial.

Mainstream media's partisan and sloppy handling of the Trump-Russia collusion narrative has irreversibly damaged its credibility with the American public, according to an explosive, four-part report by investigative journalist Jeff Gerth released Monday by the Columbia Journalism Review.

In part one of the series entitled "The press versus the president," Gerth comes out swinging, naming specific outlets that dropped the ball.

"'Holy sh*t, Bob Mueller is not going to do it,' is how Dean Baquet, then the executive editor of the New York Times, described the moment his paper's readers realized Mueller was not going to pursue Trump's ouster," Gerth reports.

In part three, Gerth recounts how BuzzFeed News decided to publish the now debunked Steele Dossier, with then-editor Ben Smith deeming it "a journalist no-brainer," given how their outlet is a "slightly fringy place."

Despite Gerth's revelations and the withering quotes he collected from prominent media figures criticizing the reporting of outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post, the Times remained unrepentant, maintaining its reporting and analysis regarding the discredited Russiagate narrative were always above reproach from the start.

In a statement to CJR, the Times touted the journalism awards it won for its Russiagate reporting, adding that it "thoroughly pursued credible claims, fact-checked, edited, and ultimately produced ground-breaking journalism that has proven true time and again."

Gerth, who has reportedly been investigating the Russiagate journalistic debacle for the past two years, refers to the Times as existing within its "own bubble," writing that "the damage to the credibility of the Times and its peers persists, three years on, and is likely to take on new energy as the nation faces yet another election season animated by antagonism toward the press."

Gerth's reporting highlights how adversarial the relationship between Donald Trump and the mainstream media was, even before he ascended to the White House back in 2016. He recalls how the public used to trust the news, credibility that has now been largely squandered, he contends, by the debunking of the media's cherished Russiagate narrative.

Today, only 26% of Americans "trust news generally," according to the Reuters Institute's annual Digital News Report for 2022.

Trump sat for interviews with CJR over the past several years, adamantly proclaiming his innocence, calling the Russia probe a “witch hunt” or “hoax," according to Gerth.

"At times, Trump seemed almost to be toying with the press, offering spontaneous answers to questions about Russia that seemed to point to darker narratives," Gerth recounts. "When those storylines were authoritatively undercut, the follow-ups were downplayed or ignored."

"During my interview with Trump, he appeared tired as he sat behind his desk," writes Gerth. "He wore golf attire and his signature red MAGA hat, having just finished eighteen holes. But his energy and level of engagement kicked in when it came to questions about perceived enemies, mainly Mueller and the media.

"[Trump] made clear that in the early weeks of 2017, after initially hoping to 'get along' with the press, he found himself inundated by a wave of Russia-related stories," the article continues. "He then realized that surviving, if not combating, the media was an integral part of his job. 'I realized early on I had two jobs,' the former president had said. 'The first was to run the country, and the second was survival. I had to survive: the stories were unbelievably fake."

Four drydocks in Washington state have been idled amidworries raised by an earthquake study

The US Navy has announced the shutdown of four drydocks in the Seattle area, citing safety concerns if a major earthquake strikes the region. The service is already struggling to keep up with the maintenance needs for its nuclear-powered attack submarines.

Three nuclear-certified drydocks at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington and one slot at the Trident Refit Facility in nearby Bangor, have suspended submarine docking for further evaluation and upgrades, the Navy said in a statement.

Officials didn’t specify what the recently completed seismic study showed; nor did they offer an estimate as to how long the affected drydocks will be out of commission.

The seismic assessment “identified potential issues associated with the remote possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring simultaneously with a submarine maintenance availability,” the Navy said. “With this new information, the Navy is taking additional measures to further ensure the safety of the shipyard workforce, sailors, the local public, the environment and the submarines.”

The Pacific Northwest lies near the Cascadia subduction zone, a fault line that runs 700 miles along the coast, from Vancouver Island to northern California. Scientists have warned that the fault is capable of unleashing a “megathrust” earthquake registering a magnitude upward of 9.0 on the Richter scale, as it did in 1700, and that it has a 37% chance of causing a quake of at least 7.1 magnitude within the next 50 years.

The Navy knowingly built the Puget Sound shipyard in an active seismic zone, but some of its drydocks weren’t adequately girded for a major earthquake. For instance, one of the slots included in the suspension order was reportedly built on “unconsolidated earth and fill,” putting it at bigger risk of liquefaction during a big quake.

Although the Navy insisted that the drydock shutdowns won’t affect the nation’s “strategic deterrent capability,” the move comes at a time when 36% of US attack submarines are either undergoing maintenance work or awaiting service. Even before the suspension, the Navy had only 18 drydocks to tend to all of its submarines and aircraft carriers. Over the past decade, only 20-30% of submarine maintenance projects were completed on time, the Navy said last year.

The Puget Sound shipyard is more than 130 years old, and upgrades to just one of the suspended drydocks will cost an estimated $667 million.

Former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro has asked the U.S. for a six-month tourist visa to continue his stay in the country, while officials in Brazil deal with the fallout out of the violent right wing protests in the capital city earlier this month.

Bolsonaro applied for the visa last week, which was first reported by the Financial Times. The former Brazilian president has been in the U.S. since just days before his term ended late last year.

But Bolsonaro is facing a number of investigations back home stemming from his time in office. In the wake of the riots in Brasilia, the capital city, earlier this month, a number of U.S. lawmakers have called on the federal government to stop allowing Bolsonaro refuge in the country.

Lavrov reveals message from Blinken

The information was passed on by Egypt’s top diplomat but contained no “serious proposals,” the Russian foreign minister said

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has conveyed a fresh message to Moscow on the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, although the statement offered nothing of value, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Russia’s top diplomat made the remarks on Tuesday following talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry.

While Moscow has been always ready to hear a “serious proposal” from Washington “aimed at resolving the current situation,” the message from Blinken contained no such information, Lavrov stated.

“Minister [Shoukry] said that he conveyed a certain message from Secretary of State Blinken, who was recently on a visit to Cairo. I can confirm that,” Lavrov said.The Russian diplomat added that the message once again urged Moscow to “stop” and “leave” Ukraine, and “then everything will be fine.”

The real goals of the US and the collective West, however, have been articulated much more clearly by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Lavrov continued.

“In one of his speeches, he said thatRussia must lose, Russia must be defeated, and the West cannot allow Ukraine to lose, because then the West will lose. And the whole world will lose,” Lavrov explained, referring to the NATO chief’s comments. “That is, he took it upon himself to speak not only on behalf of three-dozen NATO members, but also on behalf of all other countries of the world, [including] Asia, Africa, and Latin America.”

Multiple senior US officials have repeatedly urged Moscow to end its military campaign in Ukraine, as well as to cede the former Ukrainian territories which were incorporated into Russia following referendums. US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland signaled last week that doing so might prompt Washington to consider easing anti-Russian sanctions. The proposal, however, was dismissed in Moscow.

“We still don’t see anything [new] in Madame Nuland’s words.We are absolutely not inclined to exaggerate their importance,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at the time, adding that the remarks once again showed “the lack of flexibility in the position of the US.”

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, which were designed to give Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the agreement to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”The idea was confirmed by then-Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and then-President of France Francois Hollande.

EU state’s president urges NATO to cross more ‘Russian red lines’

Kiev should get Western fighter jets and longer-range missiles, Lithuania’s Gitanas Nauseda has declared

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has called on NATO to escalate its brinkmanship in Ukraine by supplying Western-made fighter jets and long-range missiles to Kiev. Moscow suggested that Nauseda had failed to consider the potential consequences.

“I have seen many red lines… that were not drawn by us, democratic states,” the Lithuanian leader said in an interview with LRT television on Tuesday. “The terrorist state of Russia is trying to draw them, using fear and threats.”

Nauseda praised previous instances whenNATO crossed “Russian red lines”, such as by greenlighting the supply of Western-made main battle tanks to Ukraine. The lines “exist only in our heads” and can be ignored, the Lithuanian president suggested.

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Baltic states together with Poland “are apparently prepared to do anything to provoke more confrontation and probably don’t give thought to the consequences.” Peskov added it was “sad”that countries which “serve as the locomotives of all European processes” do not act to counterbalance such influence.

Western nations have claimed to be showing restraint with military assistance to Ukraine to avoid being drawn into a direct confrontation with Russia. However, increasingly advanced weapons systems have been supplied to Kiev throughout the conflict.

Moscow believes that Ukraine’s donorshave long been party to a proxy war against Russia. Some Russian officials have warned that the crisis could spill beyond Ukraine and turn nuclear, should the trend continue.

Lithuania, which operates no fighter jets of its own and relies on other NATO nations for air policing, has been one of the most vocal proponents of arming Ukraine.

Fighter jets and long-range missiles are arguably the next primary targets for Kiev’s lobbying of its foreign backers after they agreed to supply tanks earlier this month. Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov asked for those systems during a meeting of donors at the US Ramstein Airbase in Germany two weeks ago, but the request was not granted.

In the long run,Kiev is eying as many as 200 modern warplanes for its defense, Ukrainian media reported on Tuesday, citing remarks by national armed forces spokesman Yury Ignat to French media.

The Lockheed Martin F-16 is the “most likely candidate” to replace Soviet-made fighter jets as the backbone of the fleet, Ignat told the Ukrainskaya Pravda news outlet when asked about modernization plans.

Japan and NATO have agreed to further deepen their partnership, arguing Tuesday that the international community is “facing changes defining an era,” as the military alliance seeks more support for Ukraine and Tokyo looks for like-minded partners to tackle the growing military challenges posed by China and North Korea.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that the free and open rules-based international order is at stake amid changes in the power balance and intensifying geopolitical competition.

“The world is at a historical inflection point in the most severe and complex security environment since the end of World War II,” the two leaders said, emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation as the security of Europe, the United States and Asia is “closely connected.”

The two sides said they welcomed progress toward Japan transitioning into NATO’s new Individually Tailored Partnership Program, which is expected to elevate bilateral cooperation “to new heights that reflect the challenges of a new era.”

Plans to upgrade the relationship were first broached last June, when Kishida became the first Japanese leader to attend a NATO summit. The ITPP provides an updated framework that is individually tailored to each partner’s objectives for its relationship with the alliance.

During their meeting, Kishida and Stoltenberg also reaffirmed the importance of cooperating in domains such as cyberspace, outer space, disinformation and strategic communications, countering hybrid challenges and critical and emerging technologies.

Stoltenberg, who visited Iruma Air Base before meeting Kishida, also welcomed Japan’s intention to participate in the North Atlantic Council and the NATO Chiefs of Defense meetings on a regular basis.

“We are convinced that the Japan-NATO cooperation will demonstrate its value under this severe and complex security environment,” the two leaders said in the statement.

The two sides also noted Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which they said has not only shaken the rules-based international order but also “gravely altered” the global security environment, particularly as the balance of power shifts rapidly in the Indo-Pacific.

In this context, they expressed concerns about growing Sino-Russian military cooperation, including joint operations and drills in the vicinity of Japan, and reiterated their opposition to “any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion in the East China Sea.”

They also criticized reports of militarisation, coercion and intimidation in the South China Sea, and urged China, which NATO has designated a “systemic challenge,” to improve transparency and cooperate with international arms control, disarmament and nonproliferation efforts.

On Taiwan, the two leaders described the need for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as “an indispensable element in security and prosperity” of the international community. They also reiterated their condemnation of North Korea’s nuclear and missile development, urging Pyongyang to comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Before traveling to Tokyo, Stoltenberg had visited South Korea where he urged allies and partners, including Seoul, to provide more assistance to Ukraine to help bring Russia to the negotiation table.

Just like South Korea, Japan has provided nonlethal aid to Ukraine in the form of drones, bulletproof vests, helmets, tents and medical supplies, but has not delivered weapons due to defense guidelines that effectively ban weapons exports.

Speaking on the issue of military support for Kyiv, Stoltenberg noted in Seoul that while the decision was South Korea’s, “several NATO allies, who had as a policy never to export weapons to countries in conflict have changed that policy now.”

Stoltenberg’s visits to Seoul and Tokyo have been viewed with concern in Beijing and Pyongyang. China’s Foreign Ministry criticized NATO for what it said was repeatedly going beyond its traditional regional area of defense by strengthening military and security ties with Asia-Pacific countries.

“Such developments call for high vigilance among regional countries,” a ministry spokesperson said. “NATO needs to abandon the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation mindset, and do things that will contribute to the security and stability of Europe and the wider world.”

Pyongyang echoed earlier claims by its ally, Beijing, with state-run media claiming that the trips “instigate the creation of an Asian NATO,” warning that the visits were “a prelude to confrontation and war” as the body brings “the dark clouds of a new Cold War to the Asia-Pacific region.”

In 2018, Paul Manafort “pleaded guilty in the District of Columbia to two counts: (i) conspiracy to commit multiple offenses, including violating FARA by failing to register and by providing false statements in a document filed with FARA.” Manafort was sent to prison.

FARA violations were used against these two individuals who were close to President Trump.

But not so with Hunter Biden.

In Hunter’s laptop were a number of emails that show that Hunter Biden acted as a foreign agent. Hunter’s actions in Ukraine with Burisma were one example.

Hunter Biden was on the Board of Burisma. He and his buddy Devon Archer and later Joseph Cofer Black were also on the board. Hunter, an attorney, and Cofer Black, a former CIA agent, both should have known that there are actions required for being an agent for companies and countries overseas.

Cofer Black, for example, signed a resolution for Burisma in 2019 related to dividend distribution. Cofer Black with his background should have known that the company was foreign and engaged in foreign political activities while looking for ways to build its name in the US. The hiring of Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, and Cofer Black were examples of this.

Patients Denied Transplants for Declining COVID Jabs Get Their Day in Court

A Michigan judge will soon decide if 73-year-old Ross Barranco can be denied a donated kidney because he won’t take the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I just don’t see the logic of it,” stated Barranco in an interview with The Epoch Times. “Everybody knows an organ transplant procedure requires the nearly complete suppression of a recipient’s immune system so the body won’t reject it.

“Then why do I need to be immunized against COVID before the operation?”

When asked if he thought the vaccine would make any difference in his prognosis, he replied, “Yeah, the vax can kill me.

“To qualify for a transplant both of my kidneys have to be functioning at 20 percent or less. What if the vax destroys the remaining function before the operation? If it does, I’m done.

“The jab does absolutely nothing beneficial for a transplant patient,” he said.

Given the current COVID-19 testing capability, it remains unclear why transplant patients cannot be tested for COVID-19 before the operation. A negative result could then green-light the procedure.

It is also unclear why, given the data showing numerous fully vaccinated people have come down with COVID-19 multiple times, the shot is still being regarded by some hospitals as an immunization.

Barranco’s legal team made reference to a 2021 survey of 200 transplant centers across the country.

Of the 140 that responded to the survey, only half required transplant candidates to take a COVID-19 vaccine regimen.

“The vax can hardly be deemed medically necessary if half of the responding transplant centers are not requiring it,” said Deborah Catalono of the Liberty Counsel, a researcher tracking hospital transplant policies and a lawyer familiar with many similar cases to that of Barranco and Shier.

The Liberty Counsel is a non-profit, litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to upholding religious liberty and Christian values.

Medical questions and safety concerns aside, Barranco, a Roman Catholic, actually refused the vaccine on religious grounds.

He said his faith and conscience do not permit him to receive a shot that he is convinced was developed using body parts obtained from aborted babies and has fetal tissue in its ingredients.

On Feb. 1, 2022, Barranco received what he perceived as an “ultimatum” from the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.

School Cop and his Teacher Wife Arrested for Grooming, Raping, and Filming Students

Prosecutors described a "highly elaborate grooming process" carried out by the couple.

A disgraced school resource officer and his now-fired teacher wife have been indicted on disturbing sex charges involving a student from the school where they worked. Parents and students from Corinth Holders High School in Wendell, N.C. are now asking if anyone else was involved.

According to authorities, Mike Medlin, a Johnston County Sheriff's Office deputy and school resource officer, and his wife Ami Medlin, a teacher for 22 years and worked as a family and consumer science teacher at Corinth Holders High School, have been hit with multiple charges.

The couple was indicted on three charges each of taking indecent liberties with a student, first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and sexual servitude.

Prosecutors described a "highly elaborate grooming process" carried out by the couple on a troubled boy at the school. The abuse spanned the course of two years.

"He was invited into their home and given alcohol. Videos were made of him doing sexual things and then given to Miss Medlin at school so she could watch," the prosecutor said.

Details of the abuse were made public, including the fact that Mike Medlin admitted to being "involved" after the student was intoxicated. According to police documents, the couple admitted to taking a student home with them to "watch movies" in their bed with them.

The couple was also accused of inappropriate relationships with other children, including a girl who had been a babysitter for their children.

Despite the couple's own admissions and the extremely disturbing allegations surrounding their indictments, the courtroom was packed on Monday with their supporters, according to WRAL.

The male victim, who is now an adult, was also in the courtroom on Monday as the district attorney asked for $75,000 bail for each of them. The judge, who was apparently swayed by the thin blue line, bumped the bail down to $50,000 and the couple quickly posted it and returned home.

The investigation began last year and Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell fired Deputy Medlin following an internal investigation into allegations of an inappropriate relationship with two alleged victims. Medlin was terminated on May 23, 2022. Ami Medlin was suspended on May 16, 2022, by Johnston County Schools.

According to the indictment, “the defendant took indecent liberties with the student victim by: willfully taking and attempting to take immoral, improper, or indecent liberties with the student victim for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire; and by willfully committing and attempting to commit lewd and lascivious acts upon and with the body and any part of member of the body of a student victim.”

Allies of Hunter Biden ​have held initial discussions about starting a legal defense fund to aid the first son as Republicans ramp up congressional investigations into his business relationships and the federal probe into his taxes continues, according to a report on Tuesday.

A collection of attorneys have been representing Hunter, 52, in recent years and new ones are being added as his team pursues fresh legal strategies — but the Biden scion has struggled to pay them all due to dwindling financial resources, the Washington Post reported.

It’s unclear exactly how much the first son owes in legal fees because some of the work has been treated as pro bono.

But others close to the situation say Hunter’s debt could reach into the millions of dollars — and that amount is expected to go up as the House GOP launches probes.

President Biden’s son has no steady source of income, the report said, and the once-lucrative payouts from his foreign business relationships have dried up under continued public scrutiny.

The Post revealed Hunter Biden’s shady connections to Ukraine and China in a series of reports in October 2020.

While the first son is currently trying a career as an artist, reportedly selling one painting for $500,000, other pieces of his artwork have not fetched nearly as much, the report said.

At the same time, some potential buyers have reneged on their purchases because of the congressional investigations and other potential blowback.

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter last week to the Soho gallery owner who exhibited Hunter Biden’s paintings, seeking information about who purchased the art as part of his investigation into alleged influence peddling.

The gallery owner, Georges Berges, told The Post that the request for sales information should go through his lawyers, but took the time to gush about Hunter Biden’s artwork.

“His is a story of perseverance; Hunter’s story reflects what I believe is the beauty of humanity, judged not by the fall, but by having the strength to rise up, by having the character required to change and the courage to do i​t,” Berges told The Post about the recovering ​crack addict.

Other prominent figures, including former President Bill Clinton and longtime political operative Roger Stone, have created legal defense funds as they confronted mounting legal bills in the face of investigations.

But the disclosure process governing the funds is often vague, raising ethical questions about who’s donating and whether they are trying to influence the White House.

The Washington Post report also noted there are few rules governing legal defense funds for private citizens.

While the Office of Government Ethics, the agency monitoring conflicts of interest in the executive branch, has started to come up with rules for executive branch officials, that process is ongoing.

Still, the office is not considering rules for the children of elected officials, despite concerns over donors trying to buy influence.​

“The Federal Election Commission does not consider legal defense funds to be a part of the campaign finance system,” ​Craig ​Holman​, a lobbyist for Public Citizen, told the outlet.

On Saturday and Sunday, Trump issued multiple attacks on DeSantis’ handling of COVID-19 and his shutting down of Florida’s beaches. The former president has also labeled the governor “DeSanctimonious,” and has said that a DeSantis presidential run in 2024 would be bad for the “base.”

“The revelations about Ron DeSanctimonious doing FAR WORSE than many other Republican governors, including that he unapologetically shut down Florida and its beaches, was interesting, indeed. DJT leading BIG!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

DeSantis had largely been silent on Trump’s criticisms. In November, he appeared to respond to Trump by alluding to “noise” around him.

The Biden administration’s FCC nominee may have deep conflicts of interest with the companies she may oversee, according to a memo obtained by The Daily Wire.

According to the memo, Sohn’s public records show that she is a consultant for the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society, a think tank dedicated to expanding broadband access. But that think tank is funded by many of the telecom giants she is nominated to oversee. And Sohn has publicly criticized that exact behavior before.

According to Sohn’s Executive Branch Personnel Public Financial Disclosure Report with the Office of Government Ethics from January 2022, Sohn earned some $137,002 in “consulting fees” from the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society, which accounts for nearly half of her reported salary. In the filing, Sohn described her work as “[p]ublic advocacy, coalition building and strategic guidance that broadens public awareness about the importance of universal, affordable and open communications networks.”

According to the Benton Institute’s website, Sohn has been a Senior Fellow and Public Advocate with the organization since 2018, and has published nearly 20 articles for their blog, and another she co-authored for the website TechDirt.

However, according to a donor list also on the Benton Institute’s website, the organization is sponsored by several of the largest telecommunications giants in the country, companies that Sohn will oversee if appointed to the FCC. Among the organization’s “Platinum Sponsors” are Google Fiber, the internet giant’s fiber-to-the-premises broadband subsidiary; Verizon; and T-Mobile. One of the group’s “Gold Sponsors” is the National Lifeline Association, a non-profit which supports the federal Lifeline program. “Silver Sponsors” include AT&T, Dish Network, and Twitter.

And Sohn has criticized these exact groups in the past. “Yes, it’s better that @FCC is again run by telecom, cable & broadcast industries & their bought & paid 4 think-tanks,” Sohn tweeted sarcastically in 2017, replying to a critic. “Now *that’s* democracy!”

Sohn advertises her position at the Benton Institute in her Twitter bio.

On January 3, President Joe Biden re-nominated Sohn for a vacant seat on the FCC formerly held by Ajit Pai. He previously nominated her in 2021, but her nomination stalled because of concerns about overtly partisan statements and advocating for censorship of conservative news networks like Fox News and Sinclair Media.

“My principal concern with Ms. Sohn is that she has expressed a significant willingness to use government power against political enemies, and to use government power as a tool of censorship,” Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz said in a Senate Commerce Committee hearing last March. “And I think the FCC is a particularly dangerous place for a partisan who is willing to try to muzzle those with whom she disagrees.” Cruz also raised ethical concerns over a secret legal settlement made by company she served on the board of, just one day after Biden announced her nomination.

The Commerce Committee deadlocked on her nomination, sending her confirmation to the full Senate with extra procedural hurdles. The nomination was never brought to the floor, and the Senate returned the nomination to Biden on January 3, before the 117th Congress concluded and the 118th Congress opened.

Sohn is currently facing criticism over her position on the board of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which opposed a pair of bipartisan laws passed in 2018 aimed at stopping online sex trafficking, as well as sharing a tweet attacking former President Trump.

Israel Bar Association chair resigns following accusation of sexual abuse

Avi Himi heeds growing calls for him to step aside but says indecent act was consensual, accuses ‘desperate politicians’ of trying to silence anyone with a different opinion

The head of the Israel Bar Association submitted his resignation on Tuesday after a report accused him of performing an indecent act during a video chat with a young female lawyer.

Avi Himi, one of the loudest opposition voices against the government’s plan to radically overhaul the judicial system, allegedly exposed himself during the video conversation and touched himself onscreen, Channel 13 reported Monday evening.

The report said the incident took place during a call with a lawyer who had asked Himi to support her appointment as a judge. After notifying her that he had sent a letter recommending her promotion, the senior lawyer allegedly took his pants off and started pleasuring himself in front of her without her consent.

Himi did not immediately deny the report but said that the act was consensual. In the hours after it aired, he accused “the poisonous machine of those seeking to promote the judicial overhaul” of targeting him because he opposes it.

“Once again we witness how desperate politicians work tirelessly to trample anyone with a different opinion than theirs,” he said.

“I considered the possibility that instead of trying to deal with my position, they would try to harm me on a personal level and that’s a price I’m gladly willing to pay,” he added earlier Tuesday, initially holding off on a resignation announcement.

But uproar extended beyond the ruling coalition that Himi has criticized.

Merav Michaeli, chairwoman of the opposition Labor party, who is well known for her feminist activism, also urged Himi to resign.

“Avi Himi seemingly hasn’t denied carrying out sexual acts with a woman whose professional future was in his hands,” she said. “Even if it was ‘consensual’ and he only ‘suggested’ something, that is sexual abuse and the wrongful use of his authority and position,” she charged.

Hagit Pe’er, chairwoman of the women’s rights organization Na’amat, also called on Himi to resign immediately.

“A person who heads an organization that represents lawyers and Israel can’t be a person who allegedly took advantage of his position… Such offenses must not become political issues between those who support or oppose the government – public officials must serve as an example,” she said.

IDF cyber warfare experts are training the next generation to boost the country's defense capabilities

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said IDF Unit 8200 cyber intelligence officials are now training 20,000 Israeli students to boost the country’s future cyber defense capabilities.

“Nationally, we are building an IDF school for computer science in Beersheba and Unit 8200 is training some 20,000 young people for the field of cyber,” said Netanyahu speaking at the Cybertech conference in Tel Aviv.

The prime minister said that, “The people who are actually practicing defense against cyber attacks are teaching the youngsters – the result is superior.”

A cyber iron dome

Next, Netanyahu said that, “Israel has become a leading cyber power, both on a government level and at the private sector level.”

“Let me focus on the dramatic increase in cyber attacks…emanating from governments. In Israel, we are creating a cyber iron dome. We are using advanced AI [artificial intelligence] and defusing data from multiple sources to deal with multiple attacks as they are all happening” simultaneously, he said.

He spoke about threats both from nation states and ransomware hackers, who might not be affiliated with governments.

Further, he advocated high levels of public and private sector cooperation as well as international cooperation where “the league of like-minded countries with smarts, advanced advanced AI and advanced cyber” capabilities can help each other.

Moreover he said, “Cyberwarfare is in its infancy. The capabilities of cyber war are not limited to democracy, but democracies must pool their resources to defend themselves.”

Earlier at the conference, former IDF intelligence Unit 8200 chief and Team8 Co-Founder and CEO Nadav Zafrir said on Tuesday that “if there is a resolution in 2023,” in the Russia-Ukraine war, cyber attacks will become worse, not better.

“Cyber as part of the toolkit will become the main tool and we will see more threats, not less,” said Zafrir.

The former IDF cyber intelligence chief also said sarcastically that the world is “almost celebrating a year of war in Ukraine. A year ago, no one would believe we would have a global war in Ukraine that looks like World War.”

Next, he discussed “what did not happen. We didn’t see the cyber doomsday weapon come out in Ukraine. We didn’t see it because there was no motivation to take it out. But we did see cyber become a real thing. In this war, it was a part of the toolkit.”

Further, he said that “we will be in the Wild West of cyber in 2023” given a complete breakdown in US-Russia relations leading to unprecedented levels of global nation state and ransomware attacks.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Michal Braverman-Blumenstyk said that 2022 saw a record $8.4 trillion in losses due to hacking, making up 9% of the world economy.

Mandiant UK Managing Director Stuart McKenzie Mandiant said Russia’s cyber attacks on Ukraine led to “the most sophisticated attacks we have ever seen.”

He said that governments and organizations need to realize that their “crown jewels” of critical items to focus on defending cannot be limited to intellectual property and trade secrets, but also must include how they deliver their services.

Chinese Companies Are Buying American Military Academies, Lawmaker Warns

Institutions with JROTC programs now owned by firms with ties to Chinese Communist Party

Chinese firms with ties to the Chinese Communist Party have in recent years purchased American military academies that operate military officer training programs.

In 2015, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which serves as the Chinese Communist Party's political advisory board, purchased Donald Trump's alma mater, the New York Military Academy, for $16 million dollars. Conference member Mo Tianquan secured the purchase after a bidding war with another Chinese conglomerate.

Two years later, a Chinese education conglomerate purchased the Florida Preparatory Academy as part of its plan to create "a global educational alliance system." The organization partnered with a CCP-controlled regional government agency on the initiative. Both the New York Military Academy and Florida Preparatory Academy operate Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) programs, which train future military officers.

Rep. Michael Waltz (R., Fla.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, says Chinese ownership of these schools could pose a national security threat.

"To the extent that those private schools have junior ROTC programs that are forming the backbone of our future leaders of our military, this is something I would hope and would expect the Defense Department would work with me to better understand," Waltz told the Washington Free Beacon.

Waltz on Tuesday sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, urging the Pentagon to survey JROTC programs at private schools across the country to see if they are foreign-owned.

"With the ongoing military recruitment crisis, I am concerned that any students we recruit into the service from these CCP-influenced schools will have a sympathetic view of China's political and strategic aims," Waltz, who chairs the House subcommittee on military readiness, wrote to Austin.

Exxon’s 2022 earnings set a historic high for the Western oil industry

US oil major ExxonMobilearned $55.7 billionin profits last year, the company disclosed on Tuesday. The figure was a new high for Exxon, whose previous record was $45.2 billion in 2008, when a barrel of oil cost close to $150 – some 30% higher on average than in 2022.

According to company CEO Darren Woods, profits soared on the back of recovering post-Covid-19 demand amid energy supply constraints.

“While our results clearly benefited from a favorable market, the counter-cyclical investments we made before and during the pandemic provided the energy and products people needed as economies began recovering and supplies became tight. We leaned in when others leaned out,” Woods said.

The company’s output also grew by about 100,000 barrels of oil and gas equivalent per day (bpd) against 2021, rising to 3.8 million bpd. (With less for US than WW)

Exxon’s earnings are believed to be a record high for the Western oil industry, although fellow majors BP, Chevron, Shell, and TotalEnergies have yet to post their 2022 results. According to a recent calculation by Refinitiv analysts, the five supermajors are expected to report a combined profit of nearly $200 billion for 2022 following last year’s spikes in energy prices.

However, the bumper figures have fed the debate on whether governments should further hike taxes on windfall profits for the sector as consumers suffer high energy prices. Shell recently said its extra tax from windfall levies in Europe and the UK for 2022 is estimated at around $2.4 billion. TotalEnergies reported earlier this month that windfall taxes cost the company at least $2 billion in the fourth quarter.

Exxon said its fourth-quarter earnings fell short by $1.3 billion due to the EU’s windfall tax and asset impairments. The company is suing the bloc in a bid to scrap the levy, arguing that Brussels exceeded its legal authority by imposing it.

They were in on it then and they’re in on it now. That’s why I disagree of the appointment of this guy as Special Counsel.

And here’s the most important thing I say tonight. This guy Hur needs to be the first one subpeoned by the Special Committee under Jim Jordan’s authority on the weaponization of government.

Former Vermont Police Chief Cited For Sexual Assault Of Minor During Ride-Along

Following a yearlong investigation, the Vermont State Police has cited Jeffrey Noyes, 54, of Bloomfield, Vermont, on a charge of felony sexual assault arising from an incident that occurred in October 2017 involving an underage girl. Noyes is the former chief of the Brighton and Canaan police departments and was on duty at the time of the incident.

The incident was reported in February 2022 to the Vermont State Police, which opened an investigation. A detective from outside the area was assigned as the lead investigator, with assistance from the Technology Investigation Unit and troopers from the Derby Barracks. VSP worked closely on the case with the Lamoille County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to the findings of the investigation, Noyes and the victim knew each other, and she had accompanied him on multiple ride-alongs in his cruiser. In October 2017, Noyes was in uniform and on duty when he drove with the victim to a remote area and had sexual contact with the victim, who was under the age of consent.

On Monday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2023, Noyes came to the Derby Barracks, where he was processed and released on a citation for sexual assault. He is due to appear for arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 21, 2023, in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Guildhall.

An Indian spiritual guru with millions of followers was today jailed for life after he was convicted of raping one of his devotees who he kept prisoner for five years.

Asaram Bapu, 81, was yesterday found guilty of sexually abusing the woman several times between 2001 and 2006 at his monastery in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Today, a court in Gandhinager sentenced Asaram to life in prison and ordered the self-styled guru to pay a fine of 23,000 rupees (£228) and also 50,000 rupees (£496) as compensation to the victim.

Asaram is already serving a life sentence after he was convicted of raping another devotee, who was 16 at the time, at his ashram in Rajasthan in 2018.

The guru raped the 16-year-old while her parents waited outside his room chanting prayers as he 'cured' her. He threatened to kill the girl's parents if she told anyone.

In the latest case, a woman told police in 2013 that Asaram raped her several times at his ashram in the city of Motera where he kept her prisoner for five years before she managed to escape.

Today, Asaram, who has millions of followers and more than 400 ashrams in India, was convicted of the woman's rape and wrongful detention.

In 2019, Asaram's son Narayan Sai was sentenced to life in prison for raping and illegally confining the same woman's younger sister.

The woman came forward in 2013 to report the rape to police after Asaram was arrested in a separate case of sexual assault.

Joe Biden and his team simply will not come clean with the American people about the numerous stolen classified documents found in his possession. Biden, his personal and White House lawyers, in cahoots with the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have kept secret the details the searches at his private Penn Biden Center office and Delaware homes. It was two months after the first search was done that Biden owned up to it but only after the news was leaked to CBS News. Biden’s White House and private lawyers have since issued incomplete statements and timelines that have failed to disclose the full nature of the searches.

Attorney General Merrick Garland kept the Biden investigation secret for two months, even though he appointed a special counsel to investigate President Trump in mid-November over a classified documents dispute with the National Archives. Garland only appointed a special counsel for Biden after his cover-up of the investigation was exposed.

CBS News reported the latest blow to the Biden cover-up on Tuesday with a report that the FBI searched Biden’s private office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. in mid-November. This search has never been revealed by Biden or his private and White House lawyers.

Excerpt from CBS report:

The FBI searched the Penn Biden Center offices in mid-November, according to two sources familiar with the investigation, after lawyers for President Biden had found about 10 documents marked classified there on Nov. 2. The material originated from Mr. Biden’s time as vice president.

It is not clear whether FBI personnel found any additional classified or presidential material during the mid-November sweep.

Two sources told CBS News the search was conducted with the cooperation of Mr. Biden’s representatives. A search warrant was not sought.

Fox News confirmed the CBS report:

FBI agents searched the Penn Biden Center offices in mid-November, sources confirmed to Fox News, after President Biden’s personal attorneys discovered a handful of documents with classified markings there on Nov. 2. The documents were dated to Biden’s time as vice president in the Obama administration.

When the Biden classified documents scandal was first reported on January 9 by CBS, White House special counsel Richard Sauber issued a statement that did not mention the FBI search of the Penn Biden Center.
