Biden Practices Saying ‘The State Of The Union Is Strong’ In The Mirror With A Straight Face

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a White House bathroom, President Biden was heard saying "The state of the Union is strong" over and over again, trying to say the words without busting up laughing.

The President had gone into the bathroom about thirty minutes prior and spent the whole time trying to get the whole sentence out without laughing about how ridiculous and obviously untrue it was.

"The state… of the Union… is… I'm sorry, I can't do this!" Biden said, cracking up before he got the words out. "It's too much!" Biden began wiping tears out of his eyes. "How am I supposed to get through this? At least we'll have a good blooper reel! Oh, man. It's just such a riot. Even I know the Union isn't strong. And I can't even wipe myself!"

"Oh, man. My speechwriters are hilarious." Biden tried tactics like saying sad phrases such as "shoveling dead puppies" and looking up videos of Afghans falling from planes, but it didn't work. The videos in particular didn't make him sad, as he said it had happened "four or five days ago, man." Still, Biden tried hard to get the words out.

"My cheeks hurt from laughing so much. OK, take 371. Let's get this done."

At publishing time, Biden was practicing saying all his numbers from one to ten without stumbling over his words. It was not going well.

ODESSA, TEXAS (MRT) - The common goal Midland and Odessa share in touting that "two presidents lived here" in their respective communities is in bolstering tourism.

Midland lays claim to three such houses and one in particular - The George W. Bush childhood home at 1412 W. Ohio Ave. and the future presidential site.

Odessa boasts of three Bush father-son houses. But only one Odessa Bush house still exists from 1948 when George H.W. Bush and his bride, Barbara Bush, and their then 2-year-old son, George W. Bush, lived there.

The Odessa Bush house, a two-bedroom, 800-square-foot house at 916 E. 17th St., has been purchased by the Odessa-based Presidential Museum for about $20,000. And by May of 2002, the house is to be relocated to a 2,500-square-foot site near the new Presidential Museum on the campus of The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) in east Odessa, said Carey Behrends, executive director of the museum.

"It is a vital part of our history here," said Behrends, noted the "modest house" on the UTPB campus will be a "fabulous opportunity" for the museum.

The Bush house is to be moved to the UTPB campus near the new $2.5-million building that is to house the Presidential Museum & Leadership Library.

"There are very few places throughout the country that can boast the fact that two presidents lived here," Behrends said. "Other than the Adams house, which had two presidents living in it, we can say we have several houses (in Midland and Odessa) in which the (two Bush) presidents lived."

The "Adams house" in Massachusetts was the home of John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, who, respectively, were the nation's second (1797-1801) president and its sixth (1825-1829) president.

The Midland-Odessa area has "something to sing about, to sing our praises," Behrends said. "We are all working for the same goal, which is to get tourism into the West Texas area."

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year, show that even after America had entered the war and when there was already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies, he worked for and profited from companies closely involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its political dynasty.

Remarkably, little of Bush's dealings with Germany has received public scrutiny, partly because of the secret status of the documentation involving him. But now the multibillion dollar legal action for damages by two Holocaust survivors against the Bush family, and the imminent publication of three books on the subject are threatening to make Prescott Bush's business history an uncomfortable issue for his grandson, George W, as he seeks re-election.

While there is no suggestion that Prescott Bush was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the documents reveal that the firm he worked for, Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), acted as a US base for the German industrialist, Fritz Thyssen, who helped finance Hitler in the 1930s before falling out with him at the end of the decade. The Guardian has seen evidence that shows Bush was the director of the New York-based Union Banking Corporation (UBC) that represented Thyssen's US interests and he continued to work for the bank after America entered the war.

TV tower struck in Ukrainian city – reports

Unverified videos on social media have shown the area around the structure in Lisichansk on fire

A television tower was reportedly struck in the city of Lisichansk in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday amid an ongoing Russian military offensive in the country.

Several videos purportedly filmed in the city captured thick black smoke billowing from the area around the tower after what appears to have been a missile strike.

Lisichansk is located in the western part of Ukraine’s Lugansk region. According to 2019 data, the city, which is currently under Kiev’s control, is populated by more than 97,000.

On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that it had hit a TV tower in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev a day earlier.

The strike, which was carried out with high-precision weapons, was aimed at thwarting “information attacks” by Ukraine and didn’t affect any residential buildings, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

The Kiev authorities have claimed that at least five people were killed and as many injured in the attack.

Russia began its “special operation” in Ukraine last Thursday, saying the incursion was needed to demilitarize and “denazify” the Ukraine government, which had been perpetrating “genocide” in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

More than 1,500 Ukrainian military installations have been destroyed since the start of the operation, the Russian Defense Ministry has said. According to Kiev, Moscow’s actions have amounted to an unprovoked invasion.

A controversial former Russian foreign minister has come under fire after attempts to rally the country’s ambassadors to quit their posts in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

In a fiery statement on Tuesday, Andrey Kozyrev urged the nation’s representatives abroad to “resign in protest.”

Kozyrev worked as the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic’s foreign minister, and served until 1996 after the collapse of the Soviet Union five years prior. While praised by the West, he is widely criticized in Russia for not being able to stand up to NATO’s aggressive actions in Bosnia and Iraq, andearned the nickname “Mr Yes.” He once publicly stated that Russia “has no national interests of its own,” and was accused by ex-Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev of working in the interests of the US State Department.

Now an American citizen,Kozyrev lives in Miamiwhere he has earned a reputation as a vehement critic of Moscow.

Dear Russian diplomats, you are professionals and not cheap propagandists. When I worked at the Foreign Ministry, I was proud of my colleagues. Now it is simply impossible to support the bloody fratricidal war in Ukraine,” he wrote on Twitter.

A representative from Moscow’s foreign ministry poured scorn on their former colleague’s words. “When recommending diplomats to surrender and betray, Kozyrev knows what he is talking about from his own experience. Colleagues were always ashamed that they had to work with him. No one has ever understood why such a person was appointed the head of the Foreign Ministry,” a source told TASS.

The unnamed foreign-service operative insisted that Kozyrev is associated with surrendering the country’s interests, and with betrayal. “Kozyrev has been living abroad for a long time. And for just as long he has been conducting anti-Russian subversive work,” the ministry source claimed.

“Kozyrev claims he was proud of the colleagues he worked with. I forgot to add that they did not reciprocate…Only thanks to a team of professionals was it possible to keep the department from complete collapse,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military action into Ukraine last Thursday after the leaders of the recently recognized breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics appealed for assistance in relation to what they claim was increasing “aggression” from Kiev’s armed forces.

Roskomnadzor has threatened Wikipedia with a ban over a page dubbed ‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’, the project said on Tuesday, sharing a notice sent by Russia’s media watchdog on social media.

The article contains “information purveyed in violation of the law,” the notice states. Namely, the article falsely claims major casualties among Russian troops and Ukrainian civilians, as well as spreads calls to withdraw cash from Russian banks due to western sanctions, the Roskomnadzor’s notice reads.

The watchdog itself remained silent on the matter, making no public statements about its threat. It also remained unclear whether Wikipedia would take any action to fix the article, as the project did not make any promises, but shared tips on how to circumvent the potential block instead.

Over the past few days, the watchdog blocked multiple internet outlets accused of spreading false information about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow launched its large-scale military operation last week, saying it was the only option to protect the breakaway Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics from an allegedly imminent attack by Kiev forces.

Ukraine, however, has denied ever seeking to re-conquer the regions, condemning the assault as “unprovoked.” The two republics emerged back in 2014 following the Maidan events, which resulted in a coup ousting Ukraine’s democratically-elected government. The new Kiev authorities launched a military operation against the rogue regions, and while active combat was halted with the 2014-15 Minsk agreements, low-intensity warfare has continued in Ukraine’s east ever since.

US power companies are urging the Biden administration not to sanction uranium imports from Russia, which they see as crucial for maintaining domestic electricity prices at a manageable level, Reuters reported, citing sources in the industry.

The US National Energy Institute, a trade group of US nuclear power generation companies, including two of the largest US utilities, Duke Energy Corp and Exelon Corp, is reportedly lobbying the White House.

Uranium is essential for electricity production at nuclear power plants. It is used as a fuel inside the reactors to boil the water generating the steam that sets the turbines in motion. Nearly half of the uranium powering US nuclear plants comes from Russia and its neighbors Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

These plants, in turn, are responsible for producing roughly 20% of US electricity, data from the US Energy Information Administration and the World Nuclear Association shows. Despite having large uranium reserves in the states of Texas and Wyoming, the US does not currently produce its own uranium.

The US and its allies have imposed sanctions on Russia over the past several days, following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions do not currently cover Russian uranium sales, however. When asked about uranium lobbying, a White House official said the US administration was “listening to all inquiries from industry, and will continue to do so as we take measures to hold Russia accountable.”

Meanwhile, Swedish power company Vattenfall AB said last week it would stop buying Russian uranium for its nuclear reactors until further notice, also due to the situation in Ukraine.

Astronomers have discovered two supermassive black holes that are 99% of the way to a violent collision that willrock the very fabric of space-time.[LOOKING GLASS?]

The black holes, which share the name PKS 2131-021, are locked in a dance of doom about 9 [3x3 → 33] billion light-years from Earth, according to a study published Feb. 23 [PAIN] in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. PKS 2131-021 is a special type of black hole known as a blazar — basically, a supermassive black hole that happens to bepointing a jet of supercharged matter directly at Earth.

The authors of the new study were monitoring the brightness of about1,800blazars [18=6+6+6 → 666] scattered around the universe when they noticed something peculiar: The brightness of blazar PKS 2131-021 fluctuated at regular intervals — so predictably, in fact, that the study authorslikened the fluctuations to the ticking of a clock.[Q-Clock?]

The researchers suspected that these variations were the result of a second black hole tugging on the first as the two objects orbit each other every two years or so, but the team needed more data to see how long this pattern held. Hundreds charged, 51 children rescued as part of international child sex abuse operation

Hundreds of men, including some allegedly in law enforcement, have been charged as part of a global child sex abuse crackdown.

Fifty-one children have been removed from harm across Australia, with 117 men – some as young as 18 – charged with 1248 child abuse offences as the result of a two-year global sting.

It is alleged some of the offenders charged in Australia worked in law enforcement.

Known globally as Operation H, a multinational effort began in 2019 after the discovery by New Zealand authorities of a cloud storage platform where thousands of alleged offenders were sharing abhorrent child abuse material online.

Through the operation, 153 children have been removed from harm – including 79 in the United Kingdom, 51 in Australia, 12 in Canada, six in New Zealand, four in the US and one child in Europe.

In Australia, Operation Molto involved police from every state and territory.

Some of the men charged are alleged to have been in possession of “the most abhorrent” child abuse material ever produced. The material was allegedly circulated among an international organised paedophile syndicate that was later dismantled following an Australian arrest in 2015.

Police will allege some of the men charged under Operation Molto produced their own child abuse material online.

The alleged offenders are between 18 and 61 years old and work in a range of industries, including law enforcement, hospitality, transport and construction.

In Queensland, 55 alleged offenders are facing 466 charges, with 16 children removed from harm in the state.

In Victoria, 18 alleged offenders are facing 370 charges. Eight children have been removed form harm.

In NSW, 17 men have been charged with 96 offences and three children have been removed from harm.

South Australia Police have charged 12 men with 232 charges and removed 10 children from harm.

Eight alleged offenders are facing nine charges in WA, but state police have not removed any children from harm.

In Tasmania, three men are facing 54 charges, and two children have been removed from harm.

Two men are facing 16 charges in the Northern Territory, with no children removed.

And in the ACT, three men are facing 48 charges and five children have been removed from harm.

“Viewing, distributing or producing child abuse material is a horrific crime. Children are not commodities and the AFP and its partner agencies work around the clock to identify and prosecute offenders,” Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Lesa Gale said.

“The success of Operation Molto demonstrates the importance of partnerships for law enforcement at a national level here in Australia but also at an international level, with our colleagues in New Zealand and around the world.”

Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty from NSW Police praised the national and international co-operation of the operation.

“This shows what can be achieved when all agencies work together for a good cause – and there’s no better cause than protecting our children,” she said.

“The NSWPF is proud to play a part in such a positive outcome and will continue to work with our partners, domestically and internationally, to ensure our kids grow up in a safe environment.”

Russia’s key state bank has revealed that it will pull out of the European Union’s financial markets, citing threats to the safety of employees and its branches in the wake of Moscow’s attack on Ukraine.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sberbank announced that the decision had been made as a result of its subsidiary banks facing “an abnormal outflow of funds.” The financial giant also claimed that its employees and branches were under threat.

“Due to the instruction of Russia’s Central Bank, Sberbank [Russia] will not be able to supply liquidity to its European subsidiaries,” the notice read, after the institution took measures to preserve its foreign currency.

However, it offered reassurances that its subsidiary banks had “a high level of capital and quality of assets,” and that customer deposits were “insured in line with local legislation.”

The departure of Russia’s largest lender from the EU does not impact its business in Switzerland, which it said is continuing to operate normally, as it has “a sufficient level of capital and assets to continue its activities.”

Sberbank had been operational in a number of EU member states, including Germany, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary, and boasted European assets worth €13bn (over $14.4bn) at the end of 2020.

Brussels revealed on Wednesday that the EU had disconnected embargoed Russian banks from the global payment network SWIFT. A number of major lenders, including VTB and Rossiya, are subject to the cut-off. However, Sberbank and Gazprom are not on the list for now because they are the key channels for payments for Moscow’s oil and gas, on which Europe heavily relies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine last Thursday, after the leaders of the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, recently recognized by Russia as sovereign states, appealed for assistance in relation to what they said was a sharp spike in “aggression” from Kiev’s armed forces. According to Putin, the aim of Moscow’s offensive is to “demilitarize” and “denazify” the country.

The invasion of Ukraine has transformed Russia into a commercial outcast as refiners balk at purchasing Russian energy products, and banks are refusing to finance shipments. The result is a physical market in disarray as geopolitical turmoil upends supply chains and keeps markets volatile.

Commodity markets have been in turmoil since the Feb. 24 invasion. European natural gas jumped as much as 60% on Wednesday – as buyers, traders and shippers avoid Russian gas.

Three sources told Bloomberg that gas and power traders are avoiding new deals with Russia's Gazprom PJSC. They said European companies are expected to unwind contracts, or clearinghouses will halt trading with Russia's state-owned energy company and liquidate their positions.

But for now, Gazprom's gas supplies are flowing into Europe and increasing. Shipments at top entry points, such as Velke Kapusany in Slovakia and Yamal-Europe pipeline overnight in Germany, have recorded gas levels rebounded, with more capacity booked.

The invasion has turned Russian into a commercial outcast and is causing changes in market structures, price dislocations, and violent swings across commodities and many asset classes.

The European benchmark, Dutch gas, jumped to nearly 195 euros a megawatt-hour, a record high, and were 38% higher at 167 euros at 0728 ET.

Requests from Palestinians attempting to leave or enter the Gaza Strip through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing are being rejected by the Israeli government if the required documents are headed "State of Palestine".

Tarabin Asana, 60, tried to visit Gaza following her father's death. However, Israel's military liaison officer to the Palestinians, known as the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), refused to approve her request due to the heading on the form labelled the "State of Palestine".

According to Haaretz, the response that she received explained that Israel does not accept documents from the "State of Palestine". The officials said, "Legible documents should be submitted that do not have this heading or its equivalent in any language."

In another case, a petition filed at Jerusalem District Court by the Israeli human rights organisation Gisha sought permission for a Gaza resident and her three children to visit her husband undergoing life-threatening surgery in the West Bank. During a court hearing, the Israeli government instructed Gisha to submit an official medical document issued by the Palestinian Health Ministry to COGAT proving the husband's critical condition. However, the government insisted that the document could only be submitted via the Palestinian Civil Affairs Committee in Gaza. "Israel doesn't transfer documents with the heading 'State of Palestine'."

Haaretz said that following a number of such cases, the Hamoked Centre for the Defence of the Individual contacted the head of COGAT at the Erez Crossing demanding that a stop be put to this practice.

"Gaza Strip residents' right to a family life is reduced to the most exceptional circumstances: a wedding, serious illness or a relative's funeral," Hamoked's executive director, Jessica Montell, pointed out. 146 children worldwide saved in an operation targeting child abuse online

90 000 online accounts were identified internationally, 46 suspects arrested in New Zealand and more than 100 identified across the EU

Europol supported an international investigation into tens of thousands of accounts possessing and sharing child sexual abuse material online. The operation, led by the Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs, has so far involved law enforcement authorities from Australia, Austria, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain, the UK and the US. The international coordination of the investigative activities facilitated the identification of a large number of individuals tied to these accounts.

The investigation was initiated in 2019, following a report from an online service provider, which indicated that a large number of offenders used the platform to exchange particularly disturbing child abuse images, including imagery depicting sadistic acts of sexual abuse of infants and children. The review of the information led to the discovery of 32 GB of files, the equivalent memory necessary to stream approximately 90 minutes of video. To date, the international investigation has led to the opening of 836 cases internationally, the arrests of 46 individuals across New Zealand, the identification of more than 100 suspects across the EU and the safeguarding of 146 children across the globe. The operational activities led to the identification of users worldwide and this information was shared with the relevant national authorities for further action. In two of the cases in Austria and Hungary, the suspects were offenders abusing their own children, who were six and eight years old respectively. Both children were subsequently safeguarded. Another investigation in Spain uncovered that the suspect possessed and disseminated child sexual exploitation material, while also filming naked and sexual images of adults without their consent. A large number of investigations are still ongoing across the EU.

Europol facilitated the exchange of information and coordinated the partner agencies. The agency also provided analytical support by cross-checking the data and providing greater detail for the investigative intelligence packages, which were then disseminated to the national law enforcement authorities participating in this operation.

Yesterday’s primaries in the most populous county in Texas, Harris County where Houston resides, were riddled with corruption. According to one TGP reader:

AOC-lite, Lina Hidalgo, appointed an Elections Administrator (rather than a duly elected Elections Clerk), Isabel Longoria, who, through incompetency and ( more likely) deliberate sabotage, has created chaos in Harris County primaries.

Today is Election Day, and the website shows NO polling locations this morning. The voting location PDF was changed at 4:01 THIS MORNING. In (conservative West Houston) Katy, for example, only ONE of the previously listed voting locations remains the same – there are more now than previously, but they are not at regular precinct polling sites; therefore, most voters will show up at their precincts not knowing they cannot vote there.

In addition, PJ’s (Precinct Judges) who are working the polls have been assigned and reassigned to locations over the last few days; have had to work to find election clerks to assist (including this morning); have been given their PJ boxes minus any ballot paper and, as noted during early voting, are being forced to allow Republican and Democrat ballots to be co-mingled in the same drop boxes after being scanned.

Real voter suppression is alive and well.

Local news outlet KHOU reported on glitches in the voting machines.

There have been some glitches on this Election Day for the nation’s first primary of 2022.

Some new voting machines went down at Harris County polling places Tuesday morning because they were apparently overwhelmed. On top of that, they said election judges are still getting used to the new equipment.

According to individuals wanting to vote in the county, there were numerous events that prevented Republicans from voting in the state’s primaries. At one precinct Republicans could not vote.

Why did Ukraine’s Euromaidan protests begin?

In late November 2013, Ukrainians took to the streets in peaceful protest after then-president Viktor Yanukovych chose not to sign an agreement that would have integrated the country more closely with the European Union.

As the protests in Kyiv’s Independence Square, or Maidan, continued into 2014, the government began cracking down on the demonstrators. The size of the protests only grew in reaction and turned into what was termed “the revolution of dignity.” Those who remained on the Maidan risked assault, kidnapping, unlawful arrest, and loss of their jobs. On January 16, the government introduced a series of repressive laws severely restricting civil society and the right to protest. On January 22, the first protesters were killed in clashes in Kyiv; in all, over 100 mostly civilian protesters died, the majority on February 20 and 21.

On February 22, after President Yanukovych had fled the country, parliament voted to oust him and hold new elections. On May 25, Ukrainians elected Petro Poroshenko as president. After October elections, a new pro-reform coalition government came into power in December 2014.

What were the Euromaidan protests about?

The protests were more than a demand for closer EU relations; they were a rejection of injustice as a way of life and of the post-Soviet politics of corruption and nepotism. Ukrainians took to the streets to denounce the country’s endemic corruption, from the grand corruption practiced by ex-president Yanukovych and his peers, to everyday corruption and petty unfairness—like the need to bribe a teacher to get better classroom conditions for your children, a doctor to get an appointment, or the traffic police to avoid unlawful fines.

Civil society activists and NGOs played an important role in organizing this early protest movement. Ukraine’s independent media—including Ukrainska Pravda, Nashi Groshi (Our Money), and Slidstvo.info—were also pivotal in exposing the corruption that eventually brought people onto the streets in November 2013.

The brutal government crackdown that followed these initial protests galvanized Maidan supporters and encouraged more to join. This momentum, further propelled by the killings of February 20 and 21, led to the removal of ex-president Yanukovych from power.

How did the Open Society Foundations react to the Euromaidan protests?

The International Renaissance Foundation, part of the Open Society family of foundations, has supported civil society in Ukraine since 1990. For 25 years, the International Renaissance Foundation has worked with civil society organizations defending human rights and justice, tackling corruption, supporting Ukrainian minorities including Tatars and Roma, pursuing health and education reform, and helping to facilitate Ukraine’s European integration.

The International Renaissance Foundation played an important role supporting civil society during the Euromaidan protests. The foundation ensured that legal aid was made available throughout the crisis to civic activists, protesters, and journalists; supplied victims of violence with medical care; enabled civil society solidarity and organization; supported channels like Hromadske TV in independent, live reporting about events on the Maidan; and documented cases of torture, beatings, and police and courts abuse.
