When a homeless individual in Seattle decides to set up camp on your front lawn or a drug addict steals from your business, City Council Member Lisa Herbold is looking to make all misdemeanors not just the norm, but legal.
The legislation called "the poverty defense," was proposed and discussed Tuesday by the Seattle City Council's Public Safety Committee after it was introduced by Herbold and Anita Khandelwal, King County's director of the Department of Public Defense.In October, Herbold, chairperson of the Seattle City Council's Public Safety Committee, introduced legislation to "excuse and dismiss" almost all misdemeanor crimes committed in Seattle by "persons with symptoms of addiction or mental disorder." At the time, Herbold was criticized for trying to sneak the legislation in as part of the budget cycle rather than through the normal legislative process and with no public discussion about the proposal.
Herbold now wants to add legal defense to the Seattle municipal code, which would provide an affirmative defense for someone who committed a crime because they needed "…to meet a basic need to survive." Herbold said she wants a jury to hear a defendant's explanations for the crime and for the jurors to decide if the crime was committed to "…supply a basic need."
Additionally, an exception would be added to the new version of the proposal that would allow for the reselling of stolen goods to raise money to pay for a "basic need."

Sheriff JacksonTheodore Jackson is an accomplished senior executive with extensive experience as a field manager and a broad range of experience at FBI Headquarters in national program areas, policy budget, and management. In 1996, Mr. Jackson was selected by the President of the United States to be awarded the rank of Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service of the FBI.
Mr. Jackson began his career with the FBI in 1971 and served in various investigative assignments in Memphis, Tennessee, and Cleveland, Ohio. In 1980, Mr. Jackson was promoted to FBI Headquarters, Washington, D.C., where as a Supervisory Special Agent he coordinated the FBI’s National Public Corruption, Election Laws, Labor Matters, Antitrust and Civil Matters Programs throughout the United States.
In 1984, he was promoted to the Inspection Division as an Inspector’s Aide. In this assignment, he was responsible for review of program areas in field offices selected for audit. These areas of responsibility consisted of office budget, national programs, and utilization of resources, compliance with policy, regulations, and liaison efforts.
Following his assignment to the Inspection Division, in 1985, Mr. Jackson was promoted to the position of Supervisory Senior Resident Agent in Charge of the Hackensack, New Jersey Office and Resident Agency of the Newark Division. During this assignment, he supervised significant and complex White Collar Crime, Organized Crime, and Drug investigations, as well as Foreign Counterintelligence matters, to include International Terrorism Groups. Of significant accomplishment was the dismantling of a faction of the Genovese organized crime family, a Colombian drug organization operating in New York and New Jersey, and public officials misusing their elected or appointed positions. It should be noted that the Resident Agency was responsible for Bergen County, one of the wealthiest counties in the United States adjacent to New York City, via the George Washington Bridge, with a population of one million people in 72 municipalities.
In 1988, Mr. Jackson was promoted to the position of Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Office in Mobile, Alabama, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Division. In this assignment, he managed all investigative programs, the Resident agencies, financial, budget and administrative matters as well as liaison and community outreach efforts.
In 1992, he was promoted to the prestigious rank of Inspector with the responsibility of supervising internal reviews and audits of FBI operations and budgets as well as conducting sensitive administrative investigations. This assignment was noteworthy in that out of 11,500 Special Agents of the FBI, only six can hold the rank of Inspector at any one time.
In 1994, Mr. Jackson was promoted to the position of Special Agent in Charge of the Cincinnati, Ohio Office. This office is responsible for the FBI operations in the 48 counties that comprise the Southern District of Ohio. During this assignment, Mr. Jackson systematically planned, coordinated and controlled the overall activities associated with the office’s criminal investigative, budgets and administrative programs. He ensured the appropriate identification of crime problems within the office’s territory and established attainable goals and objectives to address these problems. Under the direction of Mr. Jackson, the Cincinnati Office consistently out produced other offices of equivalent size in the FBI in every investigative field….

Plane crash deaths rise in 2020 despite Covid pandemic
More people died in commercial plane crashes in 2020, an industry group has said, despite the number of flights plummeting due to the pandemic.
Dutch aviation consultancy To70 found that 299 people were killed in commercial crashes worldwide last year, rising from 257 in 2019.
This is despite a sharp drop in flights due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Tracking site Flightradar 24 reported that commercial flights had dropped by 42% last year.

According to a statement released by To70, the figures include all deaths from large passenger aircraft accidents - including acts of unlawful interference, like the shooting down of aircraft.
Their figures for 2020 include the shooting down of a Ukraine International Airlines flight by Iranian armed forces last January. Iran plans to give $150,000 (£110,000) to the families of each of the 176 people killed - more than half of all those killed in plane crashes last year.
It also includes the deaths of 98 people in May when a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight crashed in the city of Karachi. An initial report blamed "human error" for the accident.

What is motivating you to run for this office?
I want to continue and build on the re-entry and recidivism programs that I started in the jail. Also, to continue all the programs for the youth, seniors and homeless initiatives. I am working to return the agency to the Triple Crown rating that it once held. I will strive to continue to work with our law enforcement partners to address crime in the whole county.
What is the biggest issue facing the Sheriff’s Office and how will you address it?
I would like to address and draw more attention to the mental health issues in the jail through programs designed to enhance and help inmates. I feel with the relationships that I have built with the partnerships in our federal, state and local law enforcement associates, we will be able to impact and continue to address the crime problems in our county. I will continue to build on the gap between law enforcement and the community, through our Outreach Unit with the chaplains, to address our successful programs.
Why should voters keep you in this office?
I am the only candidate with the experience to run the Sheriff’s Office, since none of the other candidates have even visited the Sheriff’s Office recently to really know how and why things have to run the way they do in this turbulent time. This is an unprecedented time that none of us have experienced. They can only speculate what they think they can accomplish. I have a proven track record with much more to accomplish.In my tenure since my first election, there has been nothing but honesty and transparency with no embarrassing blemishes in the media.
What strengths and weaknesses have the coronavirus pandemic crisis revealed in law enforcement and jail management in Fulton County?
As we stand together in the fight against the COVID-19 virus, I am working to protect the staff and inmates. Because our jail has new people arriving from the community and returning to the community almost every day, our work impacts the safety of Fulton County and the state of Georgia. Our strengths are the men and women of the department and their willingness to put their lives on the line every day. The weakness is the unpredictableness of the pandemic and what the future holds.

In regards to Lin Wood, let's analyze a few points:
A. He is stating that Chief Justice Roberts adopted his children through Epstein.
B. Chief Justice Roberts adopted his children for a pedophilia sacrifice.
C. Lin directly asks Roberts if he is a member of a cabal that requires minor children as an initiation fee.
D. He claims that Roberts discussed Scalia's death before it occurred.

His claims acknowledge that there is a cabal that requires pedophile acts in order to be apart of their group. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is a part of these cabal and sacrifices his own adoptive children to be apart of this group. This group is so powerful that they are able to kill a supreme court justice. With only reviewing what Lin Wood is stating, he would be murdered just for even simply alluding to all of this. He basically just signed his death warrant. I don’t believe that Lin has a death wish, he knows what he just exposed puts a giant target on his back. A U.S. judge on Friday rejected a lawsuit filed by a Texas lawmaker and other Republicans against Vice President Mike Pence who is set to preside Wednesday over a joint session of Congress to formalize the results of the 2020 presidential election.
U.S. District Judge Jeremy D. Kernodle said Rep. Louie Gohmert and other Republicans who filed suit lack standing to bring the legal action seeking to overturn the election of President-elect Joe Biden.
Gohmert's brief claimed Pence can overrule the Electoral College and effectively decide the 2020 presidential election himself
Under the Constitution, Gohmert claims in a brief, Pence has the authority to conduct that proceeding as he sees fit. He may count elector votes certified by a state’s executive, or he can prefer a competing slate of duly qualified electors. He may ignore all electors from a certain state. That is the power bestowed upon him by the Constitution.
He adds that the Twelfth Amendment of the Constitution unequivocally entrusts to him [Pence] all the prerogatives and rights to determine what electoral votes to count.
The congressman’s lawyers claim that a court striking down a century-old law that keeps Congress in control of counting electoral votes is the best solution for resolving ongoing contention over the election.
On Wednesday, the Electoral College tally giving Biden the election and the presidency is to be accepted formally by Congress, a typically ceremonial process. This year, though, potent allegations of widespread voter fraud leveled by President Donald Trump have spurred questions about every step of the election process.
Indeed, dozens of Republican congressmen and at least one senator, Josh Hawley, threaten to bog down the approval, even if they ultimately can't derail it and upend the election outcome.
On Thursday, weighing in on Pence's behalf, Justice Department lawyers urged the judge to dismiss Gohmert's case. They said he should have sued the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives if he disagrees with the established way that Electoral College votes are counted.
According to news reports by DailyMail.com and The New York Times, that shocked and disappointed Trump, who himself called Pence to express his "suprise" over DOJ's intervention against the legal case.

Richard Bates, the longtime head of government relations for Disney, died Dec. 31 at his home outside Washington, D.C. He was 70.
Disney said the executive’s death was sudden. Bates had represented Disney in the halls of Congress and other public policy arenas since 1991.
Disney insiders are “heartbroken” over Bates’ death, Disney executive chairman Bob Iger and CEO Bob Chapek said in a joint statement. Friends and co-workers described Bates as a “gentleman” who was extremely knowledgable about governmental issues.
“As head of our Government Relations team in Washington, D.C., Richard was second to none in his field — widely respected for his incredible achievements and beloved for his extraordinary kindness, compassion, and irresistible wit. He was passionate about his work and approached it with the same astuteness and unwavering enthusiasm he demonstrated when he first joined Disney three decades ago. For those of us lucky enough to have known Richard personally, his loss is profound. He will be deeply missed, and our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Rose, their sons Ricky and Chris, and his entire family.”
Bates served as senior VP of government relations for Disney. He was the first to open a Washington, D.C. office for the studio when he signed on. Before joining Disney, Bates served as executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, where he steered a staff of 80.
In 2018, Bates was elected to the board of trustees of the Media Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy organization for free speech and communications policy issues.
Bates was a native of Fairfax, Va. Survivors include his wife Rose and two sons, Ricky and Chris.

(Reuters) -Tesla Inc will come to India early next year, country’s transport minister Nitin Gadkari told national daily the Indian Express on Monday.

The first model to be launched will be Model 3, the cheapest among Tesla vehicles, with prices starting at over $74,739 (5.5 million Indian rupees), according to a report in the Economic Times on Saturday.
Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk on Sunday confirmed India foray in 2021 in a reply on Twitter, but said it would not happen in January.
In October, the government of Maharashtra had invited Tesla to the state, weeks after Musk suggested entering the country next year.
Shares of the electric-car maker were up 2% in premarket trading.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declared that President Donald Trump will be dead in a few days during a speech to his Islamic nation’s cabinet as the first anniversary of the killing of a general in the country’s military approached.
Rouhani’s Wednesday speech, excerpts of which were posted in English on the Iranian presidential website, called Qasem Soleimani a martyr and moderate leader with tact.
Soleimani, the leader of Iran’s Quds Force — described by military specialists as an unconventional war and clandestine operations unit — was killed in a targeted drone strike on Jan. 3, 2020, that was approved by Trump.
The U.S. Department of Defense blamed Soleimani for hundreds of deaths and injuries to Americans; he was purportedly killed while in neighboring Iraq while actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.
Besides Trump, Rouhani referred to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as the main perpetrators of this crime.
"One of the effects of this stupid and disgraceful act was that Trumpism ended and in a few days, the life of this criminal will end and he will go to the dustbin of history, and we are very happy about this and we believe that the period after Trump will be a better condition for regional and global stability," Rouhani said.
The remarks come as tensions have intensified approaching the anniversary of Soleimani’s death; his successor has vowed vengeance, and the U.S. has flown B-52s over the region in an act of deterrence.

Iran has told the United Nations nuclear watchdog it plans to enrich uranium to 20% purity, a level it achieved before a 2015 nuclear accord, at its Fordow site buried inside a mountain, the agency said on Friday. The move is the latest of several recent announcements Iran has delivered to the International Atomic Energy Agency pointing to plans to breach the deal, which it started violating in 2019 in retaliation for the Trump administration's withdrawal from the agreement and reimposition of sanctions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday accused Trump of attempting to fabricate a pretext to attack Iran, and said Tehran would defend itself forcefully. The bomber flights appeared to have been a trigger for his tough remarks.

President Donald Trump has vetoed a bill that would have eliminated the use of large-mesh driftnets for commercial fishing off the California coast, saying the measure would be effectively terminating the industry in the region, not achieve its purported benefits and worsen a seafood trade imbalance.
By forcing the West Coast drift gillnet fishery to use alternative gear that has not been proven to be an economically viable substitute for gillnets, the Congress is effectively terminating the fishery, Trump wrote in his veto message to the Senate posted to the White House website. As a result, an estimated 30 fishing vessels, all of which are operated by family-owned small businesses, will no longer be able to bring their bounty to shore. This Bill may have significance, not sure exactly how though. Potus in september may have alluded to a bill/law that would have bearing (that he would sign or be effected) on Jan 1, 2021, since the Hospital pricing transparency bill was being discussed publically, I assume he was not referring to that.
The bill amend purpose:
To amend the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to allow the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide capitalization grants to States to establish revolving funds to provide hazard mitigation assistance to reduce risks from disasters and natural hazards, and other related environmental harm.
I did not review the Stafford Act to determine what was changed, but read it looking for anything that seemed significant.

what i can add is, as we know with Cal. wildfires, corrupt Gov's mis-use disaster funds which are intended to mitigate problems, which then create moar problems when a problem arises, which gains them moar $, with no consequence for failing to mitigate.
I think you can lump these programs into a (often) BIG fraud scheme designed to benefit large developers, and insider land speculators. While Gov's are dishing out contracts with a low level of specific performance monitoring, the end result creates nearly impossible barriers for average developers to generate successful projects, even with desireable land, and enables insiders to turn otherwise worthless land into profitable development, because Gov $ pays for improvements, and aides in permitting, etc. Also when it benefits them to do so, land owners are paid to not develop, and paid high dollars of taxpayer $ to create conservation land.
The land development game is truly among the most lucrative ROI for Gov. insiders, and creates a steady stream of cashflow from bank financing/loans whereby up to 90% of a projects profit can be realized before a single house or building is built. Remember Whitewater, many do it when they achieve a certain level/rank.

Where have all the flu cases gone?
Epidemiologist Knut Wittkowski thinks he can answer the riddle.
"Influenza has been renamed COVID in large part," said the former head of biostatistics, epidemiology and research design at Rockefeller University.
"There may be quite a number of influenza cases included in the 'presumed COVID' category of people who have COVID symptoms (which Influenza symptoms can be mistaken for), but are not tested for SARS RNA," Wittkowski told Just the News on Thursday.
Those patients, he argued, "also may have some SARS RNA sitting in their nose while being infected with Influenza, in which case the influenza would be 'confirmed' to be COVID."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's weekly influenza surveillance tracker reports that the cumulative positive influenza test rate from late September into the week of Dec. 19 stands at 0.2% as measured by clinical labs. That's compared to a cumulative 8.7% from a year before.
The weekly comparisons are even starker: This week one year ago, the positive clinical rate was 22%, where now it stands at 0.1%.
Those low numbers continue trends observed earlier in the year in which flu rates have remained at near-zero levels. The trend is not limited to the U.S. Worldwide, health authorities have all reported sharply decreased influenza levels throughout what is normally peak flu season in the northern hemisphere. Rates in the southern hemisphere were also low this year.
COVID mitigation measures cited even as COVID cases surge
Numerous experts have pointed to the ongoing COVID-19 mitigation measures — including mask-wearing, physical separation, and other anti-virus tactics — as an explanation for decreased flu levels.
Timothy Sly, an epidemiology professor at Ryerson University in Toronto, told Just the News that "the reduced incidence of seasonal influenza is almost certainly due to the protection that a large proportion of the population has been using for many months." Those measures, he said, are "designed to be effective against any airborne respiratory virus."
Holden Maecker, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University, echoed that assessment. "I feel pretty confident that the COVID-19 mitigation measures have caused the reduction in flu cases this year," he said. "Masks, social distancing, and hand washing are all effective counter-measures against colds and flu."
Speculating on why COVID levels have continued to soar if those measures have been so effective at stopping the flu, Maecker said: "I think it's because (1) there is less pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2 in the population, whereas most of us have had vaccines and/or previous bouts with flu; and (2) the SARS-CoV-2 virus seems to spread more easily than influenza, including more aerosol transmission and 'super-spreader' events. Flu transmission is almost entirely close-range droplets and hand-to-nose or eyes contact."
Sly also argued that the different dynamics of COVID-19 and influenza transmission likely play a role.
Claiming that mask-wearing and social distancing are not universal, Sly said that "majodifferent consequences and rates of spread."
Wittkowski — who has been among the relatively few academics to consistently criticize widespread COVID mitigation measures — counters that there was "no evidence to support" the contention that masks would stop influenza while failing to stop COVID.
"I think that these viruses are more similar than people want to acknowledge," he continued. "People know everybody is wearing masks and distancing, and so people want to come up with things that are good about it."
Public health officials have at times struggled
Wittkowski, who has numerous times over the course of the pandemic called for an end to lockdowns, social distancing measures, and mask mandates, dismissed the idea that those policies could ultimately have much effect on the spread of COVID-19. He has argued that herd immunity, either through natural infections or through a vaccine, is the only way to blunt transmission of the virus."Pandemics end in the same way," he said, "whether we do something or not."
