Schiff has been trying to destroy Patel ever since 2017, when Patel helped expose the fact that members of the outgoing Obama administration abused their power to “unmask” the names of Americans caught on foreign wiretaps, a practice that was thought to have led to the unjust firing and prosecution of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn over false allegations of collusion with Russia.

Schiff, then the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, wrote a memorandum in which he attempted, unsuccessfully, to counter the claims of the Republican majority that the FBI’s surveillance of Carter Page, an aide to then-candidate Donald Trump, was justified.

Schiff’s claims were later debunked by a report by the Department of Justice Inspector General, which validated Republican concerns about the abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court by the FBI in its efforts to target Trump. ...

"The President’s pardon moots Mr. Biden’s pending and yet to occur sentencing and entry of judgment in this case and requires an automatic dismissal of the Indictment with prejudice," wrote Hunter's lawyer Abbe Lowell in the filing, adding that "this Court must dismiss the Indictment against Mr. Biden with prejudice and adjourn all future proceedings in this matter."

Special Counsel David Weiss isn't having it. In a Monday response in opposition, Weiss argued that "The defendant’s motion should be denied since there is no binding authority on this Court which requires dismissal."

"As a matter of past-practice in this district, courts do not dismiss indictments when pardons are granted," Weiss wrote - citing cases involving Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, Joe Arpaio and Ollie North, Above the Law reports. "Instead, it has been the practice of this court that once an Executive Grant of Clemency has been filed on the docket, the docket is marked closed, the disposition entry is updated to reflect the executive grant of clemency, and no further action is taken by the Court."

Although Weiss purported not to have seen the pardon itself (which Lowell inexplicably failed to docket), he took particular umbrage at the suggestion that the prosecution was politically motivated, huffing that “The court similarly found [Biden’s] vindictive prosecution claims unmoored from any evidence or even a coherent theory as to vindictiveness.”

Judge Mark Scarsi of the Central District of California has taken no action, thus far. But in Delaware, Judge Maryellen Noreika said in a minute order that she intends to terminate the proceedings, and instructing the government to say by tomorrow if it objects to termination by dismissal. Presumably it does, although no objection has hit the docket as of this writing. -Above the Law

French populist Marine Le Pen has vowed to vote against the minority French government after Prime Minister MichelBarnier invoked an article triggering a confidence voteand, potentially, a snap election. Barnier invokedArticle 49.3of the French constitution, whichallows a government to pass a law without a votein parliament but causes a vote of confidence in the government itself.

Marine Le Pen and her National Rally (RN) have vowed to vote against the government alongside left-wing parties like France Insoumise (France Unbowed), which has thepotential to bring Barnier down. His government has only been in place since September.

Barnier =invokedArticle 49.3 to push through the budgetafterrefusing to give in to Le Pen’s demandson raising pensions in line with inflation and eliminating planned cuts to reimbursements for medication, among other priorities.“

Mr. Barnier did not wish to respondto the request ofthe eleven million votersof the National Rally. He said that everyone will assume their responsibilities, so we will assume ours,” Le Pen said on Monday afternoon, adding, “We are tabling a motion of censure, andwe will vote to censure the Government.”

Should the vote succeed, President EmmanuelMacron may be forced to try to form a new administration. Another snap election seems possible, although there is some question over whether this would be constitutional before 12 months have elapsed since the previous election.

It will also mark the first time a French government has fallen due to a confidence vote since 1962. A vote is expected by Wednesday.

Should the government fall, French media claimit could cause a ripple effect, as the budget will not be passed. This in turn, could lead to a shutdown of the government and a potentialfinancial crisis for France and the European Union more broadly.

The mother of Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, sent an email to her son in 2018 that sharply criticized his treatment of women, The New York Times reported Friday.

Penelope Hegseth told her son in the email that there are “many” women whom he has “abused in some way” and encouraged him to “get some help,” according to the email published by The Times.

The email’s partial publication comes as Pete Hegseth, a veteran and former Fox News host with no prior government experience, is expected to face a tough Senate confirmation process, including questions about a sexual assault allegation from October 2017. No charges were filed against Hegseth related to the incident, and he has denied the accusation, claiming the sexual encounter was consensual.

According to The Times’ report, Penelope Hegseth wrote, “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.”

Penelope Hegseth on Friday told The New York Times that she wrote the email “in anger, with emotion” and that she had immediately apologized in a separate email. She went on to defend her son, saying her own characterization of his treatment of women in the 2018 email “has never been true.”

CNN has reached out to Penelope Hegseth for comment. An attorney for Pete Hegseth declined to comment.

Penelope Hegseth sent the email to her son on April 30, 2018, according to The Times’ report — around six months after the alleged assault. The email was sent in connection with her son’s divorce from his second wife, The Times reported.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, said in a statement shared with CNN on Saturday that Penelope Hegseth’s email is “an out-of-context snippet.”

“The New York Times and other outlets are despicable for using an out-of-context snippet of an illegally-obtained private email exchange between a mother and her son that does not accurately reflect the entirety of the conversation,” Cheung said. “In subsequent emails, Mrs. Hegseth expressed regret for her emotional message and apologized.”

CNN has previously reported that a woman accused Pete Hegseth of sexually assaulting her in the early morning hours of October 8, 2017, in Monterey, California, where Hegseth had a speaking engagement the night before. The accuser told police that Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone and then sexually assaulted her.

Years later, Hegseth paid the accuser in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, his attorney Timothy Parlatore told CNN in a statement earlier this month. Parlatore said Hegseth settled because it was during the “Me Too” movement and he didn’t want to lose his job at Fox News if the accusation became public. The statement did not share how much the accuser was paid as part of the settlement, although Parlatore said it was “a significantly reduced amount.”

After the allegation surfaced earlier this month, Hegseth told Republicans on a prayer call that “the battle is just beginning” as he faces skepticism around his confirmation.

During the call, Hegseth said that his family has received “an outpouring of support” since Trump announced the pick, adding: “That’s the reason why we can endure the attacks and the onslaughts.”

Trump’s allies have defended Hegseth, with Sen. Markwayne Mullin — who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which would hold confirmation hearings for Hegseth — telling CNN’s Dana Bash that he “absolutely” believes Hegseth’s side of the story and that the allegation “doesn’t prevent Pete from going forward with this.” Mullin underscored that Hegseth was not charged with any wrongdoing and said that the police report on the incident supports Hegseth’s version of the encounter on October 8.

After the recent revelation that Pete Hegseth had secretly paid a financial settlement to a woman who had accused him of raping her in 2017, President-elect Donald Trump stood by his choice of Hegseth to become the next Secretary of Defense. Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, issued a statement noting that Hegseth, who has denied wrongdoing, has not been charged with any crime. “President Trump is nominating high-caliber and extremely qualified candidates to serve in his administration,” Cheung maintained.

But Hegseth’s record before becoming a full-time Fox News TV host, in 2017, raises additional questions about his suitability to run the world’s largest and most lethal military force. A trail of documents, corroborated by the accounts of former colleagues, indicates that Hegseth was forced to step down by both of the two nonprofit advocacy groups that he ran—Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America—in the face of serious allegations of financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct.

A previously undisclosed whistle-blower report on Hegseth’s tenure as the president of Concerned Veterans for America, from 2013 until 2016, describes him as being repeatedly intoxicated while acting in his official capacity—to the point of needing to be carried out of the organization’s events. The detailed seven-page report—which was compiled by multiple former C.V.A. employees and sent to the organization’s senior management in February, 2015—states that, at one point, Hegseth had to be restrained while drunk from joining the dancers on the stage of a Louisiana strip club, where he had brought his team. The report also says that Hegseth, who was married at the time, and other members of his management team sexually pursued the organization’s female staffers, whom they divided into two groups—the “party girls” and the “not party girls.” In addition, the report asserts that, under Hegseth’s leadership, the organization became a hostile workplace that ignored serious accusations of impropriety, including an allegation made by a female employee that another employee on Hegseth’s staff had attempted to sexually assault her at the Louisiana strip club. In a separate letter of complaint, which was sent to the organization in late 2015, a different former employee described Hegseth being at a bar in the early-morning hours of May 29, 2015, while on an official tour through Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, drunkenly chanting “Kill All Muslims! Kill All Muslims!”

In response to questions from this magazine, Tim Parlatore, a lawyer for Hegseth, replied with the following statement, which he said came from “an advisor” to Hegseth: “We’re not going to comment on outlandish claims laundered through The New Yorker by a petty and jealous disgruntled former associate of Mr. Hegseth’s. Get back to us when you try your first attempt at actual journalism.”

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, described the report of Hegseth’s drinking as alarming and disqualifying. In a phone interview, Blumenthal, who currently leads the Senate committee that will review Hegseth’s nomination, told me, “Much as we might be sympathetic to people with continuing alcohol problems, they shouldn’t be at the top of our national-security structure.” Blumenthal went on, “It’s dangerous. The Secretary of Defense is involved in every issue of national security. He’s involved in the use of nuclear weapons. He’s the one who approves sending troops into combat. He approves drone strikes that may involve civilian casualties. Literally life-and-death issues are in the hands of the Secretary of Defense, and entrusting these kinds of issues to someone who might be incapacitated for any reason is a risk we cannot take.”

As Eastern and Southern Central Banks substantially increase their gold holdings, Western Central Banks will most probably have little physical gold in their coffers. Total global gold reserves allegedly held by central banks (37,000 tonnes) are valued at $3.1 trillion at the current market price of $2,700. That value is absurd when one US company – Microsoft – has the same valuation. Just think about it: Microsoft is as big as the gold backing of the global financial system.

Furthermore, Western central banks have most probably hypothecated and re-hypothecated (lent, leased) their gold several times via bullion banks. That gold will never come back.

Consequently, CBs is heavily short on gold and will be badly squeezed as the gold market becomes disorderly.

The combination of Eastern/Southern Central Bank gold buying and all CBs replacing their dollar reserves with gold will lead to unprecedented demand for gold for many years. More gold cannot satisfy this demand since the current gold mine production of around 3,000 tonnes cannot be increased.

Thus, the substantial increase in physical gold demand can only be satisfied by much, much higher prices.

President Biden bypassed Justice Department when he pardoned his son

In pardoning his son, President Joe Biden did not go through the Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney, which processes applications and advises the president, sources familiar with the situation told CNN.

While Biden has relied on the pardon office for every other act of clemency, Donald Trump regularly bypassed the office when granting pardons during his first administration.

The decision to pardon his son Hunter, which was well within Biden’s authorities as president, comes after he said repeatedly he would not pardon him. Hunter Biden was convicted of several counts in two separate cases related to a gun purchase and taxes.

More context: The Office of the Pardon Attorney assists presidents on executive clemency, including pardons and commuting sentences, and makes recommendations. The pardon office may have determined Hunter Biden wasn’t qualified for a pardon because he has not been sentenced in either the gun or tax case, according to sources familiar with the process.

Biden has granted fewer than 30 individual pardons during his presidency and pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession. He has commuted the sentences of more than 100 individuals.

'Absolutely devastated': Authorities release names of motor deputies killed and injured in Palm Beach County crash

Officials said the deputies were off the roadway waiting on battery cables with their marked PBSO motorcycles when a woman driving an SUV tried to pass a slower-moving vehicle.

She allegedly overcompensated, veering into them, and all three deputies went airborne.

Corporal Luis Paez and Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller were taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz has undergone surgery and is stable but in critical condition, fighting for his life. PBSO says he will undergo another surgery Friday morning.

A procession was held to honor the fallen deputies.

PA woman who is accused of crashing into and killing 3 Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies in November has now been confirmed as a former Chester County resident.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the woman had previously lived in the West Chester areas of the county specifically.

It was previously reported that the woman had currently lived in the state of Pennsylvania but Florida Highway Patrol reported that the woman is actually a current Florida resident of West Palm Beach who had not updated her driver's license.

The woman had been driving her Jeep SUV on November 21 when officials stated she swerved off the road to avoid hitting a car in front of her.

That's when tragedy struck, as the woman then hit three sheriff's deputies on the shoulder of the road, identified as Luis Paez, Ralph “Butch” Waller, and Ignacio "Dan" Diaz.

All three deputies later died from their injuries.

As of now, the woman who allegedly caused the accident has not been identified or charged.

Texas attorney Sidney Powell pleaded guilty to election interference charges in Fulton County Superior Court on Thursday, one day before jury selection was scheduled to begin for her trial.

As part of the plea deal, Powell was sentenced to six years of probation for conspiring to interfere with the performance of election duties for orchestrating a Coffee County elections system breach following the 2020 presidential election.

On Thursday, Powell became the second defendant to have the terms of a plea agreement accepted by Fulton Judge Scott McAfee in a sweeping case that alleges Donald Trump and 18 of his allies illegally colluded to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Washington, D.C.

Powell’s plea now means that her co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro is set to stand trial alone, with plans to convene a 450-person jury pool on Friday to fill out a lengthy jury questionnaire.

According to the plea agreement, Powell agreed to testify in other election interference trials about the hacking of voting machines and software that occurred in rural south Georgia shortly after the incumbent Republican president lost the state of Georgia by less than 12,000 votes to Democratic President Joe Biden.

In the weeks following Trump’s 2020 presidential election loss in Georgia, Powell peppered the courts with filings claiming election fraud, she dubbed the “Kraken” legal challenge at the time.

Powell has written an apology to the secretary of state’s office and Georgia residents. She will also pay a $6,000 fine as well as $2,700 in restitution to the state. On Aug. 14, a grand jury formally charged Powell with seven felony charges in which the 19 defendants were each charged with violating Georgia’s RICO Act (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act).

Prosecutors said that by successfully completing all terms of her probation, Powell’s conviction of six counts of misdemeanor conspiracy to commit intentional interference with election duties will be sealed from her criminal record.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., panned President Joe Biden's pardon of his son Hunter Biden, suggesting Monday that lawmakers need to "revisit" the pardon power given to presidents by the Constitution.

Connolly made the remarks in an interview with CNN, reacting to Biden's "full and unconditional" pardon for his son, who was set to face two sentencing hearings this month for a felony gun conviction and a guilty plea to felony tax evasion.

"As a father myself, and as someone who knows Joe Biden, I can sympathize with his perspective," Connolly told CNN. "Having said that, what other father in America has power to pardon his son or daughter if they're convicted of a crime?

"I really think we have to revisit the pardon power in the Constitution. At the very least, we've got to circumscribe it so that you don't get to pardon relatives, even if you believe passionately that they're innocent or their cause is just."

The president and the White House asserted no less than 10 times since June 2023 that he would not pardon his son or commute any sentence he might receive.

Although Biden said the decision to reverse himself came over the weekend, NBC News reported he had been discussing a pardon with his closest aides since his son's gun conviction in June and to mislead the public. Two people told NBC News that "it was decided at the time that he would publicly say he would not pardon his son even though doing so remained on the table," according to the report.

Hunter Biden was set to be sentenced Dec. 12 on the federal gun conviction and Dec. 16 on the federal tax evasion charges he pleaded guilty to in September. Further, the president pardoned his son for any offenses he has "committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024."

Connolly told CNN that a constitutional amendment should be implemented to enumerate the limits of the presidential pardon. Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution states the president "shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment."

"I think we're probably going to have to amend the Constitution because the pardon power is so sweeping," he told Reuters. "I don't believe the pardon power should be as broad as it is."

A Delaware judge moved Monday to confirm its confiscation of Elon Musk's wealth that he created at Tesla — denying him a compensation package that would be worth over $100 billion in value today.

Musk has paid a heavy price for countering woke politics, making X a neutral platform, and backing Donald Trump for president.

Delaware Chancellor Judge Kathaleen McCormick on Monday ruled to confirm her January ruling that found Musk was not eligible for a 2018 compensation package then valued at $56 billion.

McCormick complained the Tesla package for Musk was the "biggest compensation plan ever — an unfathomable sum."

After McCormick had initially ruled that Musk had not gotten proper approval from Tesla shareholders, Musk filed suit.

Musk said he properly received board approval and later hit financial targets to earn the compensation, including benchmarks based on stock value, profitability, and revenue.

At one point, visionary Musk had driven the value of Tesla to close a trillion dollars during the compensation period. Today, Tesla holds a market cap of over $1.1 trillion.

After the judge's January 2024 ruling, Tesla went back to its shareholders to approve the Musk compensation plan.

In June, Tesla shareholders again approved the original $56 billion compensation overwhelmingly — with 77% of stock owners backing Musk and the package.

After the shareholder vote, Tesla went back to the Delaware court to seek its approval, only to find its compensation plan rebuffed again.

"Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here," McCormick said in her opinion Monday.

"Were the court to condone the practice of allowing defeated parties to create new facts for the purpose of revising judgments, lawsuits would become interminable," she wrote.

McCormick saw little contradiction, however, in penalizing Musk for the wealth he created, while granting the lawyers who sued him on behalf of shareholders an incredible $345 million in attorney fees for their legal filings.

Musk was not happy by today's ruling and took to X writing, "Shareholders should control company votes, not judges."

Musk reposted other X posts critical of the ruling.

One repost stated: "Things to do in Delaware: 1) Leave."

Musk also reported fund manager Cathie Wood's X post where she called McCormick an "activist judge at its worst."

Wood continued: "No judge has the right to determine CEO compensation. Shareholders voted twice, overwhelming each time, to ratify @elonmusk's 2018 performance-based pay package."

Since the court's first ruling, Musk has been on the warpath with Delaware.

This year he moved both Tesla and SpaceX's incorporation from Delaware to Texas. He also moved Neuralink to Nevada.

Musk has also urged other companies to quit Delaware as well.

On X, Musk has stated bluntly, "Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware."

The home state of President Joe Biden, Delaware has come under criticism for its close ties to the Biden family and its political agenda.

Last year, The Wall Street Journal published an article, co-authored by former Attorney General William Barr, lambasting Delaware for embracing far-left Environmental, Social, and Governance policies and attempting to push them on corporations.

And The Hill reported that major corporations are fleeing Delaware as a result of its highly politicized agenda.

Data suggests Delaware is seeing a drop-off of new incorporations. In 2022, the last year the state released data, Delaware saw a 6% fall in new incorporations.

The federal government has the authority to deport foreign nationals in the U.S. illegally over the objection of local authorities, a panel of three judges on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled.

The 29-page ruling was written by Judge Daniel Bress, with judges Michael Hawkins and Richard Clinton concurring.

At issue is an April 2019 executive order issued by King County Executive Dow Constantine, which directed county officials to prohibit fixed base operators on a county airfield near Seattle from servicing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement charter flights used to deport illegal foreign nationals.

Constantine’s order prohibited King County International Airport from supporting “the transportation and deportation of immigration detainees in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, either traveling within or arriving or departing the United States or its territories.”

The airport is located next to a major ICE-Seattle base of operations.

The Trump administration at the time sued, arguing Constantine’s order violated the Supremacy Clause’s intergovernmental immunity doctrine and a World War II-era Instrument of Transfer agreement allowing the federal government to use the airport in King County.

A district court agreed, ruling in favor of the federal government. King County next appealed to the Ninth Circuit.

The Ninth Circuit panel affirmed the district court’s summary judgment that the order violated the Supremacy Clause and the Instrument of Transfer agreement.

The panel also held that the federal government had Article III standing to sue and “had two related concrete and individualized injuries.” The first is “the inability to conduct the charter flights – which has increased ICE’s operational costs – constituted a de facto injury that affected the United States in a particularized, individual way” and “an imminent risk of future injury from the Executive Order.”

The second is the federal government’s injuries “were fairly traceable” and “are likely, as opposed to merely speculative,” as a result of the order. Were there no order, “an FBO would resume servicing ICE charter flights,” the court notes.

Constantine’s order violated the intergovernmental immunity doctrine because it “improperly regulated the way in which the federal government transported noncitizen detainees by preventing ICE from using private FBO contractors at Boeing Field, and on its face discriminated against the United States by singling out the federal government and its contractors for unfavorable treatment,” the court held.

The privileges were granted by a government order gazetted in October. The negative consequences of this shocking order are far-reaching. The View co-host Sunny Hostin was forced to issue another legal note regarding comments made about Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense.

During Monday’s episode of The View, Hostin issued a statement after co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Ana Navarro, and former Trump administration official Alyssa Farah Griffin made comments about an old private e-mail from Hegseth’s mom to her son accusing him of mistreating his ex-wife. Hegseth’s mom has since defended her son and described him as being a “good father” and husband.

Breitbart News’s Kristina Wong reported that Hegseth’s mother apologized immediately after she sent the emotional e-mail.

The co-hosts also discussed other Trump cabinet picks such as former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (R-HI), former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Kash Patel, and how senators should “fully vet” the cabinet picks.

“I have a very quick statement,” Hostin stated.

“It’s not going to be that quick,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected.

“Pete Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing, his lawyers said he paid the woman in 2023 to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit,” Hostin said. “No charges were ever brought.”

The legal note issued by Hostin comes as The View co-hosts have previously been forced to issue several legal notes during several previous episodes.

In one episode, Hostin and co-host Joy Behar issued four legal notes after comments made surrounding allegations about former Rep. Ice Clouds over a Red Planet

If you could stand on Mars - what might you see? You might look out over a vast orange landscape covered with rocks under a dusty orange sky, with a blue-tinted Sun over the horizon, and odd-shaped water clouds hovering high overhead. This was just the view captured last March by NASA's rolling explorer, Perseverance. The orange coloring is caused by rusted iron in the Martian dirt, some of which is small enough to be swept up by winds into the atmosphere. The blue tint near the rising Sun is caused by blue light being preferentially scattered out from the Sun by the floating dust. The light-colored clouds on the right are likely composed of water-ice and appear high in the Martian atmosphere. The shapes of some of these clouds are unusual for Earth and remain a topic of research.

NASA to Cover its 31st SpaceX Resupply Mission Station Departure

NASA and its international partners are set to receive scientific research samples and hardware as a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft departs the International Space Station on Thursday, Dec. 5, for its return to Earth.

The Dragon spacecraft will undock from the forward port of the space station’s Harmony module at 11:05 a.m., and fire its thrusters to move a safe distance away from the station after receiving a command from ground controllers at SpaceX.

After re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft will splash down off the coast of Florida. NASA will not stream the splashdown and will post updates on the agency’s space station blog.

Filled with nearly 6,000 pounds of crew supplies, science investigations, and equipment, the spacecraft arrived to the orbiting laboratory Nov. 5 after it launched Nov. 4 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the agency’s SpaceX 31st commercial resupply services mission.

Dragon will carry back to Earth thousands of pounds of supplies and scientific experiments designed to take advantage of the space station’s microgravity environment.

Splashing down off the coast of Florida enables quick transportation of the experiments to NASA’s Space Systems Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, allowing researchers to collect data with minimal sample exposure to Earth’s gravity.

Scientific hardware and samples returning to Earth include GISMOS (Genes in Space Molecular Operations and Sequencing), which successfully conducted in-orbit sequencing of microbial DNA from the space station water system, and marks the first real look at the microbial population of the water system.

In addition, SpaceTED (Space Tissue Equivalent Dosimeter) returns to Earth after collecting data on crew radiation exposure and characterizes the space radiation environment.

The dosimeter is a student-developed technology demonstration and effectively operated for 11 months on station – six months longer than intended because of its success.

Additionally, two specimens printed with ESA’s (European Space Agency) Metal 3D Printer, will go to researchers for post-processing and analysis.

Researchers will compare the specimens printed in microgravity with those printed on Earth.

The goal is to demonstrate the capability to perform metal deposition, or the layering of metals, in 3D under sustained microgravity conditions and manufacture test specimens.

Researchers aim to understand the performance and limitations of the chosen technology and become familiar with crewed and remote operations of the instrument onboard a space habitat.

Also returning on spacecraft is the International Space Art and Poetry Contest, which invited students and educators around the world to submit drawings, paintings, or poems.

Winning art submissions were printed on station, photographed in the cupola, and will be returned to their creators on Earth.

In addition, Plasmonic Bubbles researchers will observe high-speed video of bubble behavior in microgravity to understand fundamental processes that occur on a heated bubble surface.

Results may improve understanding of how molecules are deposited on bubble surfaces and enhance detection methods for health care and environmental industries.

Carnarvon's NASA satellite dish receives first signal in almost 40 years

The jagged peaks and valleys of a line chart might not look like much, but they represent a comeback years in the making.

Carnarvon's historic Overseas Telecommunication Commission (OTC) dish had sat dormant for almost four decades.

The structure, nearly 900 kilometres north of Perth, was decommissioned after a decorated history that included aiding NASA lunar missions.

It was destined for demolition before Canadian aerospace company ThothX signed a 20-year lease for the facility in 2022, with minor repairs beginning last year.

This week, the 29-metre-wide parabolic antenna received its first radar signal since 1987.

"I flew 18,000 kilometres from Canada to conduct this test and so, you can imagine, I was delighted when we managed to receive the first signals from [the satellite]," ThothX chief executive Brendan Quine said.

Like a giant caravan

The dish needed to be aimed precisely at a satellite of interest in order to receive the signal.

However, it had only been rotated a handful of times since the late 1980s and rarely beyond the range of motion needed to be stowed for the cyclone season.

Along with a new back-end radio system, the dish's bearings required flushing with fresh oil and decades-worth of pigeon droppings removed, the latter of which was an ongoing battle.

The antenna's optics, a six-metre-deep tube at its centre, were also cleaned by hand.

Despite the comprehensive works and lofty goal, the latest test came down to three men and a hand-operated drill fitted to the rotator mechanism.

ThothX Australia director Phil Youd compared the manual operation to fine-tuning the dish atop a caravan.

"Some have got their satellite dishes ... it's the same principle as that to find a satellite except it's far more accurate with what we've got," he said.

After several minute adjustments, the OTC dish managed to lock on the position of geo-stationary object NSS-12.

The United States-built satellite provides a wide range of services to Australia, such as television broadcasting, online banking transactions, emergency beacons, and military communications.

'Adversaries' above

With its proof-of-concept secured, ThothX plans to invest upwards of $10 million into the OTC dish, which it says will take a key place in its global satellite tracking network.

The dish's location in remote Western Australia, discovered by Mr Quine while searching Google Earth, is particularly well-positioned to give potential military clients a strategic advantage.

"Our adversaries are very active in space," he said.

He said an active radar would surpass the usefulness of telescopes used to monitor satellites, which could be affected by the weather.

"If you're waiting for your adversary to move a spacecraft, you kind of want to know immediately what's going on, and you want to be able to protect your own assets from things crashing into it," he said.

More work to be done

The state government contributed $50,000 towards the OTC dish's refurbishment in September as part of a regional development grant.

ThothX said those funds would go towards repainting the antenna and installing new power systems.

A fresh outer coating to help the dish withstand Carnarvon's corrosive ocean winds is next on the agenda, with hopes for a full radar demonstration in the next year.

Ultimately, the company expects to install more equipment and software that will allow the OTC dish to locate spacecraft up to 50,000 kilometres from Earth at an approximate three-metre margin of error.

The space company compared the project to its refurbishment of the 46-metre-dish at Algonquin Radio Observatory in Canada, one of several it operates across North America, Europe, and Australia.

It took about 15 years for the Algonquin dish to become fully operational.

Mr Youd, who also manages the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, said he was glad to help restore the local landmark.

NASA invests $1.5 million toward creation of Auburn University Space Manufacturing Initiative

In-Space Manufacturing capabilities for structural and functional parts — tools, electronics, and sensors — is an inevitable part of future space activity.

That’s why the world leader in space exploration is calling upon Auburn University.

NASA recently invested $1.5 million toward the Auburn University Space Manufacturing Initiative, led by Masoud Mahjouri-Samani, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and Brock Birdsong, director of research at the Auburn University Applied Research Institute.

This new initiative will focus on a circular manufacturing ecosystem where local resources can be reused for manufacturing new parts and systems on demand.

“The Auburn University Space Manufacturing Initiative is a prime example of Auburn’s leadership as a space-grant institution,” said Steve Taylor, senior vice president for research and economic development.

“The Initiative’s research will be a driving force behind innovations necessary to advance critical missions and activities in space.”

“We must maintain our leadership in space, push the envelope of space exploration, and unleash its potential for both space and terrestrial applications,” said Mahjouri-Samani.

“To do this, we must have the capabilities to manufacture parts and systems in space.”

The need for in-space manufacturing impacts multiple missions, Mahjouri-Samani said, including in orbit, on a surface (moon/Mars) and in deep space.

“The scarcity of resources in space, the microgravity environment and the high cost of transporting materials create challenges,” said Mahjouri-Samani, director of the university’s LASE-END lab who is building off of current research to create the space manufacturing initiative.

“Scarcity of resources in space limits the use of current manufacturing technologies. Properly disposing of the out-of-mission and scrap parts in space is also a huge issue.

These challenges demand manufacturing technologies that operate in space environments and, most importantly, can reuse and recycle the available resources.”

Mahjouri-Samani suggested the use of space junk. “They’re already a big problem up in the space and are growing exponentially,” he said. “Why not convert them into necessary parts?”

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, Mahjouri-Samani said, are potential manufacturing candidates for in-space manufacturing needs, as they have made a paradigm shift in the design and manufacturing of complex parts and 3D structures.

However, these technologies require well-defined sources of materials such as powders, sheets, and filaments for the printing process.

For instance, the most common AM machines for 3D printing metallic parts, such as laser-based powder bed fusion or powder-fed directed energy deposition systems, require metal powders.

“These metal powders must be prepared in powder manufacturing facilities, properly stored and safely transported to the machine users for printing parts,” Mahjouri-Samani said.

“These expensive technologies are less practical for remote locations, and they have complex safety requirements.”

Enter the Auburn University Space Manufacturing Initiative, which will use the funding to employ and develop new AM technologies that print parts and devices utilizing local resources.

These resources will be used as feedstock for the on-demand and in-situ generation of micro and nano-powders for the printing process.

“In contrast to the current AM technologies where pre-existing powders are required, in our approach, particles will be generated on-demand using a laser ablation process of the solid parts,” Mahjouri-Samani said.

“This unique approach allows us to address the space environment's scarcity and low gravity challenges for 2D, 2.5D, and 3D printing of functional and structural parts using local resources.”

Birdsong said by leveraging the university’s relationship with NASA and its world-class innovation in laser-based additive micro and nanomanufacturing technologies, Auburn is in a strong position to advance in-space manufacturing efforts.

“Our expertise in advanced manufacturing, and particularly NASA-funded on-orbit-printing functional structures and devices will allow Auburn to make important advances for in-space manufacturing challenge,” he said.

“In addition, Auburn has demonstrated the in-situ generation and real-time sintering of ultra-small nanoparticles for in-space manufacturing of electronics and sensors, which is an ongoing research project with NASA.”

UNO’s Nebraska Deterrence Lab Joins NATO Space Deterrence Wargames to Address Future Security Challenges

The Nebraska Deterrence Lab (NDL) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has partnered with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to help run a series of space deterrence wargames.

As part of the team of nine NATO nations, NDL has assisted in developing and testing a deterrence framework that would anticipate and address future security challenges.

The first wargame took place in the Netherlands on April 29-May 2, 2024.

Michelle Black, Ph.D., professor of political science, and Deanna House, Ph.D., professor of information systems and quantitative analysis, co-lead NDL.

Black’s experience working at the Department of Defense and House’s expertise in cybersecurity bring significant value to their own work as well as more comprehensive ideas in shared research.

“NATO has invited academics before as individual experts, but this is the first time that they’ve partnered with a whole lab,” Black said. “And I do think that we’re the right lab for the job.

We’re really open to understanding and thinking about concepts differently and have a history with them. It made sense.”

According to a NATO statement about the exercise, “Space underpins the Alliance’s deterrence and defense missions, including the ability to navigate and track forces, position and target assets, and gather intelligence for informed decision-making.

As the space domain becomes more contested and congested, there is an increased need to ensure its responsible use, and to protect space assets from growing threats.

The deterrence framework would include procedures to deter and respond to nefarious acts, strengthening the cohesion and cooperation among Allies and partners.”

Black and House agree that NDL is perfect for this new role on the wargames team, pointing to their respected portfolio and the fact that it is the only lab in the U.S. that does academic research on multi-actor deterrence.

When it comes to working on the wargames project, House has been thrilled to see students learning ways to apply their skills to real-world problems and broaden their thinking of what career paths are possible for them.

“In my discipline of cybersecurity, we focus a lot on what the private sector does. With private sector work, we don’t think about the impact on national security or the livelihoods of citizens,” House said.

“Working on deterrence projects, especially on the wargames, has made students think about things differently and consider a broader application of what they may want to do. A lot of folks in younger generations aren’t motivated by making companies money.

They want to make an impact, which might be as a civil servant or working in defense.”

Black and House encourage interdisciplinary collaboration in the lab, drawing in students of various majors who use different approaches to solve problems.

“We have lab meetings where we discuss what we’re researching and our challenges. The Information Science & Technology (IS&T) students might see a challenge and say, ‘Oh, I have an app for that,’” Black said.

“But they don’t know the end user or how it should be structured. So, the Arts & Sciences students have ideas for that. We have the developers and analysts next to each other, learning to speak each other’s language.”

Miranda Barna, a graduate student earning a master’s degree in criminology and criminal justice, works in NDL and agrees that the collaboration between students of different majors and backgrounds has really benefited her academic work.

“My favorite part about working at the Deterrence Lab is being able to learn from my peers,” Barna said. “As a social science student, I find it valuable to be able to discuss ideas with the technology students.

Everyone is so excited to learn from each other and create new things. It’s given me a lot of new perspectives.”

This has proven quite effective. NDL is recognized for its strong deterrence research and networking in the field, garnering local and national partnerships and work with defense agencies, such as the FBI.

There are currently twenty student positions in NDL, fourteen of which are assigned to the wargames project.

Students began this work in Fall 2023 to prepare for the wargame in April and May, then analyzed results from that wargame over the summer.

They are now preparing for the next wargame in 2025.

NDL will continue to work on the series of space deterrence wargames, which are planned to run through March 2026.

US Spy Plane Violates Uganda, DRC Air Spaces

An alleged US spy plane breached the airspaces of Uganda and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) last month, according to Ugandan media.

The violations were recorded three times on November 14, 15, and 26, Kampala Post reported, citing military sources.

According to the outlet, a Bombardier Challenger 604 aircraft flew over Kasese and Bundibugyo in Uganda and Beni in the DRC.

The aircraft, with the tail number N9191, is leased by the US Department of Defense and is used for surveillance, the outlet added.

It is based out of Djibouti, which houses a US Navy base.

False Permission Sought

The US Defence Attaché’s Office in Kampala had sought permission for the aircraft to transport personnel and cargo to the DRC.

However, a probe was ordered after it never landed at its destination and was spotted making “suspicious maneuvers” in both the countries’ airspaces, Kampala Post wrote.

The “US controllers of the spy aircraft did not bother to even ask the DRC for permission to enter their airspace,” the outlet wrote.

“Instead, it was the Ugandan air traffic controllers who notified the understandably enraged DRC air traffic controllers.”

Both Uganda’s President and the Chief of Military Staff have reportedly been apprised of the matter and the aircraft’s earlier authorization has been revoked.

Report: Iran Halts Israel Attack Following Trump Victory

Iran reportedly halted an attack on Israel following President-elect Donald Trump’s sweeping victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

A recent report from The New York Times highlightedIran has struck a more “conciliatory tone” since the November election, which included halting a retaliatory attack on the Jewish state.

In mid-November, Iran dispatched a top official to Beirut to urge Hezbollah to accept a cease-fire with Israel. Around the same time, Iran’s U.N. ambassador met with Elon Musk, an overture to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inner circle. ==And on Friday, it will hold talks in Geneva with European countries on a range of issues, including its nuclear program.

All this recent diplomacy marks a sharp change in tone from late October, when Iran was preparing to launch a large retaliatory attack on Israel, with a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps warning, “We have never left an aggression unanswered in 40 years.”

Five Iranian officials, including one Revolutionary Guard member, said the shift in tone occurred in response to the president-elect’s victory on November 5 along with Israel’s assault on Hezbollah in Lebanon.

“They said Iran suspended plans to strike Israel following Mr. Trump’s election because it did not want to exacerbate tensions with the incoming administration, which was already lining up cabinet nominees who were hostile to Iran and staunch supporters of Israel,” noted the Times.

The president-elect has been emphatic in his support for Israel, pledging that he will cancel delays and restrictions on arms shipments to the nation on his first day in office.

“The Biden-Harris administration withheld precision bombs from Israel in May in response to Israel’s decision to enter Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, against the White House’s explicit demands. Israel ultimately secured Gaza’s border with Egypt and killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who had been attempting to escape through Rafah,” Breitbart News reported.

Anons notes: Remember anons. Trump had struck a deal at the end of his first term with the Supreme Leader of Iran, that he was going to sign after the inauguration. The deal was Iran agreed never to develop an atomic weapon, and Trump would open up Iran to world commerce. They could do business in all countries, travel etc, they would become integrated with the world. The leader agreed, and was looking forward to the signing. I think that Trump will immediately pick up communications with him, they respected each other in the couple of talks. And thats one reason why they are stopping the warring.

Commercial Spaceflight Federation Rebrands To Represent Whole Commercial Space Industry

The trade association formerly known as the Commercial Spaceflight Federation is getting a new name, a concise mandate, and a way to support the politicians who support space.

The group will now be known as the Commercial Space Federation (CSF) to more accurately reflect its members, which include companies working in sectors ranging from spaceports to space situational awareness to EO.

“I heard we were seen as the launch trade association when 75% of member companies were not launch companies,” Dave Cavossa, who became president of CSF in June, told Payload.

“Launch is very important to what we do, but…it felt like it was time to mature again, that it’s about all of commercial space.”

Industry councils: To better represent its diverse membership, CSF created six new industry councils.

These will allow the organization to tailor both the info it shares with companies and its advocacy on the Hill to the priorities of specific sectors, though Cavossa acknowledged there will likely be significant overlap on things such as export control and mission authorization.

The councils are:

Launch and reentry

Commercial LEO

Space exploration

Spaceports and infrastructure

Remote sensing and analytics

Satellite and space situational awareness

Political support: CSF is also establishing a political action committee, or PAC, that is designed to support pro-commercial space lawmakers in their reelection bids, Cavossa said, noting that having a PAC affiliated with a trade association is very common in other industries.

The fund will be able to dole out contributions made by CSF employees, staff at its member companies, and PAC-to-PAC transfers from member companies’ own political funds.

“We want to make sure we’re there to support those members who step up and say we need to reduce regulation for commercial space to help it grow, we need to grow the NASA budget, we need to grow DoD budget for commercial space,” Cavossa said.

“We want to go out of our way very loudly to support them.”

A new motto: CSF is unveiling its “Integrate, Compete, and Unleash” initiative—because “everybody needs something short and sweet,” Cavossa said.

The initiative distills the organization’s top priorities that extend across its membership, regardless of sector.

Integrate: Cavossa said the government should include commercial space at the very beginning of mission planning and use commercial tech and services whenever possible.

Compete: This is a call for an open bidding process and for firm fixed-price contracts to make the government a “smarter buyer,” Cavossa said.

Unleash: CSF will be asking officials to consider what regulations are truly needed and scrap the rest.

What’s next:

Cavossa shared some of the top priorities for his member companies—and the top things he’ll be bringing to Congress and the new administration next year:

Increasing the budget for NASA and DoD space programs

Rewriting the FAA’s Part 450

Modernizing export control regulations

Eliminating duplication and cutting regulations

Approving a mission authorization architecture

Finalizing a plan to transition from the ISS to commercial space stations

ARTEMIS (Airborne Reconnaissance and Targeting Multi-Mission Intelligence System)

The ARTEMIS, is the U.S. Army’s first ever Manned Aerial ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) jet. The aircraft was officially revealed on Aug. 6, 2020, by the Army’s Program Executive Office that posted some details about the platform on Facebook: “it provides high-altitude sensing capabilities against near peer adversaries and bridges gaps in the Multi Domain Operations mission. The joint investment between the Army and industry partners started in May 2019 and recently completed aircraft and sensor system engineering, airworthiness qualification, information assurance accreditation, integration and testing requirements and deployed to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.”

One of the most interesting things about ARTEMIS, is the fact that it is equipped with a High-Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System, or HADES, a sensor suite part of the Army Multi-Domain Sensing System (MDSS), “intended to address the Army’s deep sensing requirement by providing platform agnostic sensors that support Multi-Domain Operations (MDO), including Large Scale Ground Combat Operations, and fill sensing gaps for Indicators and Warnings, Long-Range Precision Fire targeting and Situational Understanding.”
