Zelensky to address German parliament on Tuesday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will give a speech in the German parliament next Tuesday, during his visit to Berlin.

Parliamentary sources told dpa on Friday that Zelensky will address the Bundestag while attending the two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The German government had previously confirmed that Zelensky would open the conference on Tuesday together with Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Man charged with human trafficking, sex crimes in Madison Heights

A Detroit man accused of human trafficking and prostituting people has been charged, Madison Heights Police said Monday.

Kevin Leon Johnson, 31, was arraigned Friday in 43rd District Court in Madison Heights on charges of torture, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, transporting a person for prostitution, human trafficking-causing injury, and assault and battery.

A magistrate set Johnson's bond at $750,000 and scheduled his next court hearing for June 16. He remains housed at the Oakland County Jail.

If convicted, he faces up to life for torture and up to life for first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Each of the four prostitution counts carries a penalty of up to 20 years.

Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman and his wife Gisele were hospitalized after a car crash Sunday morning.

Maryland State Police told DailyMail.com the senator was driving a Chevrolet Traverse when he rear-ended a Chevrolet Impala in northern Maryland near the Pennsylvania and West Virginia borders.

According to authorities, the Fettermans were driving in Hancock, Maryland, when the crash occurred. Following the crash both of the Fettermans were transported to War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.

The Democrat has had a history of health ailments, most notably suffering a stroked while running for Senate in 2022.

Bill Gates and his energy company are starting construction at their Wyoming site for a next-generation nuclear power plant he believes will “revolutionize” how power is generated.

Gates was in the tiny community of Kemmerer Monday to break ground on the project. The co-founder of Microsoft is chairman of TerraPower. The company applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in March for a construction permit for an advanced nuclear reactor that uses sodium, not water, for cooling. If approved, it would operate as a commercial nuclear power plant.

The site is adjacent to PacifiCorp’s Naughton Power Plant, which will stop burning coal in 2026 and natural gas a decade later, the utility said. Nuclear reactors operate without emitting planet-warming greenhouse gases. PacifiCorp plans to get carbon-free power from the reactor and says it is weighing how much nuclear to include in its long-range planning. The work begun Monday is aimed at having the site ready so TerraPower can build the reactor as quickly as possible if its permit is approved. Russia is at the forefront for developing sodium-cooled reactors.

Gates told the audience at the groundbreaking that they were “standing on what will soon be the bedrock of America’s energy future.” “This is a big step toward safe, abundant, zero-carbon energy,” Gates said. “And it’s important for the future of this country that projects like this succeed.”

Advanced reactors typically use a coolant other than water and operate at lower pressures and higher temperatures. Such technology has been around for decades, but the United States has continued to build large, conventional water-cooled reactors as commercial power plants. The Wyoming project is the first time in about four decades that a company has tried to get an advanced reactor up and running as a commercial power plant in the United States, according to the NRC. It’s time to move to advanced nuclear technology that uses the latest computer modeling and physics for a simpler plant design that’s cheaper, even safer and more efficient, said Chris Levesque, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

TerraPower's Natrium reactor demonstration project is a sodium-cooled fast reactor design with a molten salt energy storage system. “The industry’s character hasn’t been to innovate. It’s kind of been to repeat past performance, you know, not to move forward with new technology. And that was good for reliability,” Levesque said in an interview. “But the electricity demands we’re seeing in the coming decades, and also to correct the cost issues with today’s nuclear and nuclear energy, we at TerraPower and our founders really felt it’s time to innovate.”

A Georgia utility just finished the first two scratch-built American reactors in a generation at a cost of nearly $35 billion. The price tag for the expansion of Plant Vogtle from two of the traditional large reactors to four includes $11 billion in cost overruns. The TerraPower project is expected to cost up to $4 billion, half of it from the U.S. Department of Energy. Levesque said that figure includes first-of-its-kind costs for designing and licensing the reactor, so future ones would cost significantly less.

Most advanced nuclear reactors under development in the U.S. rely on a type of fuel — known as high-assay low-enriched uranium — that's enriched to a higher percentage of the isotope uranium-235 than the fuel used by conventional reactors. TerraPower delayed its launch date in Wyoming by two years to 2030 because Russia is the only commercial supplier of the fuel, and it’s working with other companies to develop alternate supplies. The U.S. Energy Department is working on developing it domestically.

Joe Biden’s BS border move has already failed.

Thursday saw some 10,000 migrants in Border Patrol custody, four times the limit at which our president said he would stop processing the phony asylum claims used by illegals.

Meanwhile, video taken by The Post shows hundreds of migrants from mainly China and Turkey still crossing the border unhindered into California, then rounded up by Border Patrol on Thursday.

Other video shows much the same in rural Texas on Wednesday, after Biden’s “crackdown” supposedly took effect.

Sure looks like it’s had no effect..

Some 4,000, way over the limit, were apprehended on Wednesday. And the inflows just keep coming.

Customs and Border Protection processing centers in San Diego — the top illegal crossing area — have been stuffed to the gills and beyond recently, at 237% capacity.

Like everything else Biden’s done on the border, this policy is a joke.

Wave-Them-In Joe came into office and immediately wrecked the safeguards his predecessor Donald Trump had put in place to keep illegal immigrants out.

That brought record-smashing levels of illegal immigration month after month, year after year, eagerly aided and abetted by the Biden team, which has also created multiple new “pathways” for illegals to get waved through and instantly be eligible for work papers.

Want to jump the line to enter the United States on a transparently bogus claim of asylym? There’s an app for that!

Even with the border disaster killing him at the polls, Biden remained utterly intransigent on the issue, blaming everyone but himself.

Finally came last week’s “crackdown,” though even if it was working as advertised, it would still admit 1.8 million illegals per year.

Plus a massive carveout exempting all those whose home countries — like China and Venezuela — won’t accept them back.

Over 150,000 people from those two nations alone have jumped the border so far this year.

So to recap: Biden’s latest “crackdown” is a total fake, and even if were real would still be nearly as disastrous as his three-plus years of inviting millions to break the law and cross, then releasing them into the US with no supervision.

If this is the best he can do to end the chaos he created, he deserves everything that’s coming to him in November.

President Joe Biden's approval rating remains severely underwater just under five months before Americans will render their verdict on his reelection bid.

On Monday, Biden notched the unpleasant distinction of recording his lowest-ever mark in FiveThirtyEight's weighted tracker, which found he had a 37.4% approval rating.

This comes as polling shows worrying signs that his support among nonwhite voters is falling. Some progressives have also hammered the White House over its response to Israel's handling of the war in Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas' October 7 attack.

Biden's approval rating cratered after the US's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and has never recovered. His previous low came in July 2022, around the time gas prices hit over $5 a gallon.

In comparison, former President Donald Trump's favorability rating has increased slightly since he left office in the wake of the Capitol riot. According to FiveThirtyEight's weighted average, Trump has a 41.6% favorability rating. Trump is facing a perilous future after becoming the first-ever former president to be convicted of a felony.

Neither Trump nor Biden is widely popular, which may be a reflection of the hyperpartisan political era. In 2016, Gallup found that Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were the least-popular presidential candidates dating back to when the pollster began measuring it in 1956.

Biden's lower popularity puts him at significant risk of losing in November. Gallup's poll found Biden's approval rating for the 13th quarter of his term, which ended on April 18, is lower than any other president's since its polling began with Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Four other modern presidents had an average sub-50% approval rating at this same point in time. Only one, Barack Obama, won reelection. Trump, whose Gallup average was 46.8% at this time in 2020, lost to Biden that November.

The president is hoping that he can change the narrative this month as he's expected to increase his campaigning. He also pushed for a June debate, the earliest-ever faceoff between two major presidential candidates. The debate, hosted by CNN, is scheduled for June 27.

Biden weighs move to unlock legal status for some unauthorized immigrants

President Biden's administration is weighing a far-reaching move that would unlock temporary legal status and potentially a path to American citizenship for hundreds of thousands of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, five people familiar with the internal discussions told CBS News.

The plan under consideration by the White House would give work permits and deportation protections to certain unauthorized immigrants through the immigration parole authority, as long as they have spouses who are American citizens, the sources said. The policy, known as "parole in place," could also make beneficiaries eligible for permanent U.S. residency and eventually even citizenship, by helping them clear hurdles in U.S. law.
