The new blunders detailed in the special counsel’s report have sparked fresh concern about the president’s mental fitness.

Special counsel Robert Hur jolted the presidential campaign Thursday with a withering assessment of Joe Biden’s mental acuity, drawing the president’s biggest political liability firmly into the public conversation.
While Biden’s age is a major concern for voters in polling,top Democrats have danced around the issue, keeping their concerns mostly private. But Hur’s description of Biden, 81, in an official report as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” may force a new reckoning for the president.
Investigators found insufficient evidence to charge Biden for mishandling classified documents during his time as vice president but wrote his memory “appeared to have significant limitations” and that “he did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died” in 2015. Biden could not remember when he was vice president or the details of a debate about sending additional troops to Afghanistan, they said.
That scathing description came just as Biden’s aides were trying to explain away the president’s most recent verbal gaffes — in which he mixed up the heads of state and recalled recent conversations with world leaders who died long ago.
During a pair of New York fundraisers on Wednesday night, Biden twice described conversations he said he had in 2021 with European leaders at the G7 meeting in the U.K., which took place just months after the U.S. Capitol insurrection. At both Manhattan events, Biden said that former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who died in 2017, had asked him about the Jan. 6 riot and his reaction if people stormed the British Parliament and killed officers “to stop the election of a prime minister.”
And just days earlier, during a campaign event outside of Las Vegas, Biden mixed up François Mitterrand, the former French president who died in 1996, for French President Emmanuel Macron.
Democrats have defended Biden but also questioned the age and fitness of Biden’s likely Republican rival, Donald Trump, himself facing an indictment over his handling of classified materials.
Beyond his recent high-profile mix-up of Nikki Haley and Nancy Pelosi, Trump, 77 has repeatedly said he is running against Barack Obama, and not Biden, and that he feared that the nation may soon enter World War II, a conflict that has been over for nearly 80 years.
Biden’s mistakes underscore what critics say are the most persistent political threats to the president’s reelection bid: his age and the fear among voters that he is not mentally fit to hold office again.
“If you turn on Fox News, they’re talking about a bumbling, fumbling Joe Biden. If you go on TikTok, Instagram, there are tons of videos making fun of his age,” said a Democratic donor adviser, granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue. “It’s just consistently out there, so the more this happens, the more it feeds it.”

After the report was released, White House lawyers disputed Hur’s characterizations of Biden’s memory, and argued that he had gone outside his scope and remit. They said he was gratuitous in his focus on the president’s memory. Republicans were biting. Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), GOP Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) in a joint statement, said the comments on Biden’s memory were among the report’s “most disturbing parts.”
“A man too incapable of being held accountable for mishandling classified information is certainly unfit for the Oval Office,” they added.
Polls have consistently shown deep voter concerns about Biden’s age. A new NBC pollreleased this week found acombined 76 percent of voters say they have major (62 percent) or moderate (14 percent) concerns about Biden lacking the necessary mental and physical healthto be president for a second term. Perhapsmost worrisomely for the president, 81 percent of independents and 54 percent of Democratssay they have major or moderate concerns about Biden’s fitness for a second term.
On whether they have the same concerns about Biden’s likely GOP opponent, Donald Trump, the poll found 48 percent of voters said they did.
The former president also has made a series of recent gaffes. When he confused Haley for Pelosi, it prompted Haley, his lone remaining GOP primary rival, to suggest that Trump was “in decline” and no longer up for the job.
Before the release of the special counsel report, the White House was asked about the president’s misstatements about the foreign leaders — and dismissed them as nothing more than slips. “As it relates to the names and what he was trying to say, many people, elected officials, many people, you know, they can misspeak sometimes,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday.(the ask the one person that can’t speak English and misspeaks more them him to defend him! Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz argued “it is very clear what will matter most to voters” in November.
“Like we did in 2020, we’ll remain focused on those issues that matter to families and how it’s only because of President Biden’s deep experience that Democrats up and down the ballot are able to run on such a historic and popular agenda,” Munoz said in a statement.
Biden has previously made other errors involving the deceased. Most infamously, he mistakenly called out for Rep. Jackie Walorski at a September 2022 event, though the Indiana Republican had died in a car crash the month before. Last year, Biden mixed up Chinese President Xi Jinping with Deng Xiaoping, the Chinese leader who died in 1997.
Both Biden and Trump “are vulnerable to age-related mistakes,” said Dan Sena, a Democratic consultant who led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2018. “But I don’t completely buy into the ageism argument against either of them— that making gaffes will decide this. It’ll come down to the larger meta-narrative about those who are looking backward and those who are looking forward.”
Even so, “I don’t envy the management position they’re constantly in,” Sena added. Biden’s “ability to connect is one of his greatest strengths, but at the same time, it exposes some of his vulnerabilities.”
Democrats argue that the president’s age is baked in for most voters, who are keenly aware of his advanced age. They point to Biden’s victory in 2020, when he was 77, as evidence he has already overcome the issue….

“If [Republicans] spend all this money on saying he’s old and his age makes him out-of-touch, who does that move? Who is on the fence on that issue? People have already made up their minds on this,” said Kevin McKeon, a Democratic consultant.
The Biden campaign has, at times, used humor to try to neutralize the issue, a strategy Democratic donors have urged him to lean into. On his 81st birthday, Biden’s campaign posted a photo of the president in front of a blazing birthday cake, joking about his “146th birthday.”
Others, like Democratic strategist Mark Longabaugh, believe that “the president has to just go on being the president, showing he has the vigor to be the president,” but that means“some of these mistakes are going to occasionally happen.”
Biden’s pitch in 2020 was that he was the one Democrat who could beat Trump and the incumbent president has privately suggested that he believes that holds true again for this November.
But his age prompted a presidential primary challenger. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) launched a long-shot bid against Biden that is entirely centered on how the president’s age weakens Democrats’ chances in beating Trump.
“I’m attacked for being honest and saying the quiet part out loud — the part DC insiders only do in private,” Phillips posted on X, including a clip of Biden from earlier this week, when he appears to forget the name of Hamas, when answering a question about the Israel-Hamas conflict.“But shame on all of you pretending everything is ok. You are leading us — and him — into a disaster, and you damn well know it,”Phillips wrote.
Those in Biden’s inner circle note that fatigue forces Biden to expend more energy combating his lifelong stutter — and contribute to verbal slips. (Sure thats the reason, his stutter has nothing to do with his failing memory)
But while many in Biden’s orbit bristle at the narrative about his age, they also believe they can neutralize it. They argue that voters don’t make their decisions about whom to support based on age, and instead are more concerned about a candidate’s values and accomplishments. Biden’s advisers also make the case that he was slammed by Trump and his GOP allies over his age and mental fitness during the 2020 campaign, and that they overcame those attacks in part by pointing to his experience.=Now, they said, they can point to major legislative victoriesas part of an updated plan as well as a robust travel schedule that compares favorably to his predecessors and includes two recent stops in war zones.

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., one of the three infamous GOP lawmakers who voted against the impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, announced on Saturday that he won’t seek re-election ahead of the 2024 election.
In a statement shared on social media, Gallagher expressed that Congress is “no place to grow old,” opting instead to spend time with his family after his term ends on Jan. 3, 2025. (Some people promised him a lot of money, probably McCarthy)
“Electoral politics was never supposed to be a career and, trust me, Congress is no place to grow old,” he said. “And so, with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run for re-election.”
Earlier in his statement, Gallagher likened his congressional career to a “high-intensity” military deployment, claiming he has “accomplished more on this deployment than I could have ever imagined.” (This idiot is so arrogant)
Gallagher faced criticism last week for being one of the three representatives who sided with Democrats in rejecting the impeachment of Mayorkas. Gallagher’s pro-Mayorkas vote drew the ire of critics who called for a primary challenge.
The DHS secretary is currently under fire for unprecedented illegal immigration and the exploitation of the parole system, known by many as “catch and release.”
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Gallagher argued that the impeachment of Mayorkas would not have resolved the border crisis and instead wouldhave set a “dangerous” precedent that could be used against future Republican administrations.(this is stupid, the constitution made the grounds for impeachment, revenge is not one of them, although the democrats used it twice on Trump!)
Describing the 2019 and 2021 impeachments of former President Donald Trump as “rushed” and “hyperpartisan,” Gallagher declared: “Republicans rightly railed against this effort and the dangers of a single-party impeachment, impeachment for unpopular decisions, impeachment for non-criminal acts, and impeachment for not complying with congressional subpoenas.” (Gallgher is forgetting he let 10+ million illegals and terrorist’s into the country, that is maladministration and worse he didn’t enforce one immigration law.)
He added, “Republicans should have rejected the Pelosi precedent. Creating a new, lower standard for impeachment, one without any clear limiting principle, won’t secure the border or hold Mr. Biden accountable. It would only pry open the Pandora’s box of perpetual impeachment.”

In early 2001 during a launch of the space shuttle Atlantis, the Sun, Earth, Moon, and rocket were all properly aligned for this photogenic coincidence. First, for the space shuttle's plume to cast a long shadow, the time of day must be either near sunrise or sunset. Only then will the shadow be its longest and extend all the way to the horizon. Finally, during a Full Moon, the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the sky. Just after sunset, for example, the Sun is slightly below the horizon, and, in the other direction, the Moon is slightly above the horizon. Therefore, as Atlantis blasted off, just after sunset, its shadow projected away from the Sun toward the opposite horizon, where the Full Moon happened to be.

An upcoming satellite mission will provide a first-of-its-kind, hyper-detailed view of Earth — and a glimpse of how shifting geopolitics on the ground may play out in space.
Why it matters: Earth-observing is now a key space capability for countries. The technology helps answer crucial questions about the impacts of climate change and guide officials in managing resources and disaster response.
The NASA-Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is the largest and first truly joint collaboration in space between the U.S. and India.
It comes as the two countries deepen their scientific ties more broadly.
What's happening: NISAR, which is a decade in the making, will amass a trove of data that could help to tackle global challenges.
The satellite's two radar instruments give it the ability to observe tiny changes in Earth's surface from earthquakes and volcanoes, as well as shifts in forests, wetlands, crops, glaciers and sea ice.
Both radar systems — one built by NASA, the other by ISRO — operate at long wavelengths that can cut through clouds and collect measurements at night.
The radar from one of the instruments can penetrate tree canopies and give researchers better estimates of the density of trees, which can be used to track the capture and release of carbon from forests — key information for climate models.
NISAR can also detect deformations in Earth's surface with a precision on the order of millimeters for some measurements, says Paul Rosen, a project scientist for the mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Details: The instruments will collect measurements of 240-kilometer-wide swaths of the planet's surface as the satellite orbits Earth.
Data from the longer wavelength radar system will be used to create a map of much of Earth's land and ice every 12 days.
That data can be combined with measurements from the shorter wavelength system, which is more sensitive to smaller structures, and will focus on collecting data about India and surrounding countries, Antarctica and elsewhere.
The satellite, which is slated to launch from southern India later this spring but not before mid-April, will orbit about 750 kilometers above Earth.
"It's first-of-its-kind because it has a high resolution as well as a wide swath coverage," says Deepak Putrevu, who co-leads the mission's science team for ISRO.
The big picture: Historically, India "found itself trying to balance between the U.S. and the Soviet Union," says the Secure World Foundation's Victoria Samson.
But as India developed its human spaceflight program, it looked toward Russia. More recently, as Russia deepens its ties with China, India has grown closer to the U.S. when it comes to space.
"NISAR predates a lot of that — but India and the U.S. are finding more opportunities to cooperate," Samson says. The mission agreement was signed in 2014.
NASA is planning to train an Indian astronaut, and India last year signed on to the U.S.-led Artemis Accords that lays out governance for exploring the Moon.
The U.S. and India have also begun to work more closely on security in the Indo-Pacific, innovation and other issues but the relationship has its challenges, including most recently an alleged plot directed by an Indian government employee to assassinate a U.S. citizen in New York.
Between the lines: The NISAR mission will generate massive amounts of data — about 100 petabytes each year.
NASA has long required its data be free and open-source. ISRO has adopted a new policy that allows "free data download for any resolutions coarser than 5 [meters], for any mission … in tune with global user requirements," Putrevu says.
India's remote sensing program has historically focused on the country and surrounding regions, and the societal and economic benefit to India.
But national security, space exploration and commercialization of space are now driving India's space ambitions. The country's space policy released last year emphasizes pursuing international relations around space activities.
"India is bringing a lot to this partnership," Samson says.

Back in the fall of 2023, a message shot to the heavens in Lexington, Kentucky that was aimed and heading toward a solar system that was 40 lightyears away. Far enough away that anybody living today would have some trouble reaching it. But the message being shot into space won't take too long.
It's a message translated into binary and it reads, "Hey, Aliens! Look at Lexington." It's a Jeff Foxworthy joke that seems to write itself. Yes, researchers in Kentucky took the time to shoot a message into space that will travel 40 years to TRAPPIST-1, the planetary system with the most habitable Earth-sized planets outside of our own galaxy, and at the end, it says, "hey look!"
Thankfully much more is included within, hoping to draw the visitors (or invaders, we don't know) to Lexington and the "horse capital of the world," though the title is self-proclaimed according to Forbes. But the end goal is the same as millions of others across the globe. The folks in Kentucky want to invite the interstellar neighbors over for a cookout and for those grand tourism bucks.
"With heightened interest in space exploration and celestial events, we wanted to be the first tourism brand to think way outside the box when it comes to marketing to a whole new type of potential visitor," VisitLEX President Mary Quinn Ramer explained. "We believe that Lexington is the best place on Earth, and that many of the attributes of our destination would give extraterrestrials a great first impression-like our bucolic horse pastures with wide open spaces, award-winning bourbon, and an eclectic blend of inspiring arts and sciences."
The message also includes "photos, music and symbols for the elements of life on Earth like carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen," according to Forbes. They also made sure to include the recipe for water, something that people who watched Signs are screaming about right now.
If this is just a big tie-in for Netflix's The Three-Body Problem adaptation, people can't be sitting too comfortably. Then again, we could always hope for a Childhood's End scenario, though that one still ends poorly for Planet Earth.

The secret lives of minor planets may be even more complex and fascinating than we thought.
Scientists have discovered that a pair of gossamer rings circling an asteroid-like chunk of rock in the cold reaches of space out past Jupiter are likely being shepherded by a tiny, unseen moonlet.
The rock is named Chariklo, a type of minor planet known as a centaur – an asteroid-like body that orbits the Sun in the space between Jupiter and Neptune (rather than between Jupiter and Mars, where the asteroid belt spans).
Chariklo, just 250 kilometers (155 miles) in diameter, is the only known centaur or asteroid with rings – and it sports not one, but two.
How asteroids maintain rings is not known. But, led by astronomer Amanda Sickafoose of the Planetary Science Institute, a pair of scientists has conducted simulations and found that moonlets are a plausible explanation.
"Rings around minor planets have only been recently discovered, and only a small number of such systems are currently known," Sickafoose says.
"There has been significant research into the dazzling rings around the giant planets; however, the mechanisms of ring formation and evolution around small objects are not well understood. We've shown that one of the possibilities for thin rings to exist around small bodies is that they are being sculpted by a small satellite."
Rings in the Solar System aren't uncommon, actually. Half the planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) have known rings, and some dwarf planets do too. They usually consist of small dust and ice grains that circle a body's equator, bound in gravitational orbit, like a deconstructed moon.
We are finding an increasing number of asteroids that have moons, so minor planets with small rings aren't the weirdest things imaginable. But two very distinctly defined rings, as Chariklo has, are interesting.
Sickafoose and her colleague, computer scientist Mark Lewis of Trinity University, wanted to find out what keeps the rings so tidy.
They conducted a series of N-body simulations using modified code originally designed to understand Saturn's rings, and altered different parameters to try to replicate the Chariklo system.
The researchers found that a single tiny moon as small as 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter can maintain gossamer rings similar to those seen circling Chariklo, shaping them and keeping a gap between them in a similar fashion to Saturn's shepherd moons. In fact, such a moon might even be necessary.
"Planetary rings will naturally spread or disperse over time. Chariklo exhibits two thin rings, a few kilometers in width. In order for the rings to stay this thin, there needs to be a mechanism to confine the material and prevent it from dispersing," Sickafoose says.
"We actually show this in the paper by simulating a Chariklo-like ring system that does not have a satellite, and we find that the width of the rings increases linearly with time. This is unlike the situation when there is a satellite in resonance with the ring material, which acts to confine the rings into the kilometer-sized widths that are observed."
Interestingly, the two rings are very close to a distance from Chariklo known as the Roche limit. That's the critical distance at which the rings should start clumping together under gravity and forming moons themselves. However, a small moon can keep a ring perturbed enough that it remains a ring. So that's another factor that could be in favor of a moonlet.
Unfortunately, given how small and far away Chariklo is, and how much smaller any moon must be, we won't be able to get any pictures of such a moon without sending out a mission to get a bit closer. There may also be some indirect way of detecting whether or not there's a moon orbiting Chariklo and keeping its rings in check.
It's also not clear what the rings are made of. Ice probably accounts for quite a substantial proportion, but we don't know how big the particles are or how they interact. Finding out these details will help figure out what, exactly, is going on with this fascinating object.

He emphasized the challenge of condensing a narrative into a mere 60 seconds, regardless of one's film-making experience. Scorsese's next project is an 80-minute film titled A Life of Jesus.

Johnson failed to mention the fact that hundreds of thousands of lives would have been saved if he hadn’t intervened to scupper the peace deal.
