The trick was actually destroying the friendship superweapons, and it got him at least as far as any other villain has ever gotten in this show, which is to say total Equestrian domination.

That's not how being a bad guy works, dipshit. Bad guys don't cooperate, they conquer. They don't give in to the ideology of their sworn enemies, they shit all over it. Of course he lost in the end, all the MLP villains lose in the end. The point of the adventure eps is to demonstrate how friendship makes you shoot magic lasers that can kill literally anything. Friendship is deus ex machina especially applies in this case because Sombra actually took the time to destroy the Elements but "something something the power was inside us all along" so he lost due to pure bullshit.

Regardless, his one trick wasn't breaking the elements, but just showing his victims illusions to scare them, while hoping like hell they don't remember where they were and what they were doing 30 seconds ago, as that would make them realise its all illusion, and that they don't overcome their fear, then the illusion is also broken, or that anyone else shouts at them loudly breaking the spell, and of course, once they've overcome that trick once, it won't do much to stop them a second time. Compared to the rest of the villains of the show, that's kind of pathetic.

Lets assume that El Sombrero masterplan somehow worked, he beat Twilight after she stopped fucking around and is now the unopposed master of Equestria. What do you suppose happens the second he so much as looks in Fluttershy's general direction with nothing left to stop him from murderraping her? Considering that Discord was just playing possum to get the mane 6 to do their job, how long do you think he's going to do that when they aren't going to save the day but might be in actual trouble? While he has the cunning and grace of an enraged bull in a china shop when he was at full power, Tirek did show a big talent for manipulating others and more intelligence than most give him credit for. Every argument he made to Discord was essentially true, he hoodwinked Scorpan in the past and he was the one that put Cozy Glow up to her scheme.

If anything, working with others to his own benefit, only to screw them over when the time is right, is his modus operandi.

While Tirek certainly isn't the most cunning bad guy around, but he's clearly not a mindless brute either. If anything, I'd expect him to try to pull a Starscream and try to eat Grogars magic when gets a good opportunity.

Tirek absorbed all of Discord's magic + the magic of every non-alicorn in Equestria. This made him as equally powerful as God Mode Twilight, who had the combined power of 4 alicorn princesses. After their short battle, Tirek commented to Twilight that they were at an "impasse". However, his reign was short lived. Twilight and her 5 friends like to fight dirty and ganged up on him in a 6-vs-1 fight. They had to cheat and use the deus ex machina of "friendship magic beats all" to defeat a villain as OP as him.

Can you really blame him tho? He literally drained out all the magic of the Mane Six's bodies. He logically thought they had none left, since he now had all of Equestria's combined magic at his fingertips. The Mane Six's magic + 4 alicorns' magic + Discord's magic + Equestrian citizens' magic. With every main threat neutralized, there seemingly was no source of magic left that was powerful enough to to oppose him. He didn't expect 6 weak magicless ponies to somehow pull out an even more powerful magic than that out of their asses.

I'll agree that destroying all of (((them))) would have been a smart move. Locking (((them))) up, expelling (((them))), and other nonlethal alternatives aren't so smart. You fundamentally misunderstand the plan of S9 Sombra. First of all, the Heart was literally no threat to him this time around. Candyass put it back in its place, it did the magic pulse thing, and Sombra was totally unharmed. It's very likely that this was due to shitty writers, but to twist it around to fit with S3's canon we have to assume that either Sombra had grown much more powerful since then, or else he developed some way to be immune to it. Let's assume it's the former, because about five seconds later he survived a direct hit from the Elements of Harmony. Not only did he survive completely unharmed, he also found a way to somehow fucking hide inside of them, in other words to hide his pure evil inside of the magic friendship superweapons of pure good. This was Sombra's real master-stroke, this was the ruse he pulled which allowed him to be carried right to the magic friendship tree and destroy it along with the Elements themselves. It's literally the most impressive feat of magic and cunning we've seen in the show to date.

Consider this: when Discord gets hit by the Elements of Harmony, he turns into a statue. When Sombra gets hit by the Elements of Harmony, apparently nothing happens. Sombra could very well be more powerful than Discord, and this is something they both might have been surprised to discover had it come to an actual battle. At any rate, Sombra is extremely powerful for a unicorn; his evil crystal spells were effortlessly more powerful than the best efforts of Twilight, who is both a unicorn and the literal embodiment of magic. He also successfully overpowered Cadance's mind and brainwashed her, and seemed very confident that he could have defeated Celestia and Luna as well. And considering that the Elements literally don't work on him, nor does the Crystal Heart which was basically designed to kill him, he might very well have been able to do exactly that. It's not really safe to say that Discord definitely would have beaten Sombra, no matter how nonchalant Discord was about the whole affair.
