So, I was gonna wait until this was more fully fleshed out, but I saw a bunch of free labor arrived from halfchan so I'm capitalizing on that. This is BatSpeak, also know as BatSpeech, Skri, Fresk, and sometimes Kserf. It's a conlang (constructed language) for bat ponies, similar to Vulcan from Star Trek and Elvish from Lord of the Rings. It's based on an old AB cypher that someone embedded into a now dead pony website, where you could type shit and have it encrypted into sequences of Ks and Es like "KeekeeekkEkekeKEKEekkeKekeek" and it would sound like bats chittering.

Well, that's dead and in its stead is a proper language with its own grammar and everything. You can use it to talk about horse pussy on /b/ and Fightan Herds on /v/ without getting banned. Also, remember, this language is incomplete. There are only seventy five words which will in no way cover everything you could possibly say. We have special words to help with that, but also feel free to contribute. This is basically open source- just remember the alphabet and the grammar in the dictionary, which I'm linking in the next post. Also most importantly have fun and kis kiskri

Sort of. It was worked off the assumption that bats are very single-minded creatures, so everything they describe is relative to them. If there's only one noun in a sentence, that's the second noun, because the first, the subject is an implicit first person. Like, reifisk which means "angry fish" doesnt mean that the fish is angry, it means, "I, the implicit subject, am angry at the fish"

Batponies are definitely at least slightly less evolved than Equestrian ponies, so it only makes sense that their language wouldn't be as complex as English. Well, that, and the actual language isn't quite finished yet. We've still got a bit of grammar to work out.

It was originally named Kserf, after the first five letters of the bat alphabet. But Kserf doesn't roll off the tongue as easy as we wanted it to, so we just reversed it and got Fresk.

I'm having a bit of trouble imagining how this would be used conversationally. Given that the language is simplistic enough that all verbs are implicit to the speaker, Im guessing that questions are implicit to those asked, with tone of voice indicating a question. A simple exchange is probably

"Eko!" (Let's play! (in the future))

"Iii ksi?" (where?)

"Ririrsk" (The big cave)

"Kk Nihhh" (Yes, during not sleep (day))

Does that seem about right?

I would need to look at the dictionary and the grammar rules to remember how most of these are interpreted, but I remember that o conveys future permanance. Bats are so neanderthal that they cant usually think about anything other than the present. The future tense is therefore used sparingly and reserved for a state of affairs expected to last forever. For example "hhho" means permanent sleep to indicate death. So "eko" would be more accurately translated as "let's play forever!"

The top and middle explain the symbols and their placement. The diagram at the bottom is an example for how they are used. Anything else shouldn't take long to figure out.

If you write the symbols correctly, they work fine. Obviously, if one of the circles was damaged, then it would return the wrong number, but in that case any symbols could be rendered incorrect. The circles are usually drawn close to their parent symbol, so you shouldn't have to find which circles belong to which parent. See the attached image. On the top there are also simplified versions I omitted in the first image.

An octal system works just as well as a decimal system. In case you don't know what that is, octal uses powers 8 instead of 10; 1/8, 8, 64 are used instead of 1/10, 10, 100. It should be obvious that they would not use 1/10, 10, or 100 as often as we do. Batponies would be used to using it in the same way that you are used to the decimal system. The Babylonians used a base 60 numeral system, and the Mayans used 20.

I can't think of any other problems you might be having with it. I'd like to know your problems with it, if you haven't had more brain damage since you made Kserf.

>I'd like to know your problems with it

1. The usage and interpretation aren't explained properly.

2. Since the language is very human-centered in its design and general philosophy, the counting system should be too. Which brings me to another point,

3. There's no need for batponies to use a counting system in the first place. Because of their implied stupidity (or, rather, the lack of evolution) this entire diagram could easily be replaced with three words, "one", "two", and "many".

4. Choosing an octal system for this is completely arbitrary, which most of Fresk isn't. You could've easily used base 16 instead, or even base 3.

Also, while basing the numbers on moon phases is a clever idea, it'd be pretty hard to write those symbols with your mouth, even if you were used to it. There's a reason why the Equestrian alphabet in the show is big, simple and rounded off.

1.

I though the diagram would be enough to infer the rules because it was how I wrote them down when I made this. Each place represents what number each exponent is used, ie. 7(8^0)+7(8^1)+2(8^2)+1(8^3)=/694. On the left side of the radix mark (. in decimal), the places are ordered from least to 8^∞. On the right side, greatest to 8^-∞.

2.

They're bats, not humans. To put it not nicely, I have no obligations to Kserf.

3.

I did say that this is part of a larger project. I found a lot of potential in the idea of batponies having their own culture and society before meeting the other ponies. The numerals came up while I was designing their astronomy and calendar. Kserf brushed more advanced parts of language away with the explanation of batponies being stupid, which eliminates things such as numerals, as you said. I posted in this thread because I didn't feel like the numerals deserved their own thread.

4.

I could have used a decimal system, but it's already a stretch to have even one in Equestria, seeing as ponies have no hands, and griffons and dragons have 8 talons. The octal system comes from the works of an astronomer (before the 3 tribes began settling the southern part of Equestria) who created symbols for the 8 phases that he split lunations into. He also used the symbols to represent numbers, abandoning cumbersome tally marks. While he was doing this, he invented the concepts of 0 and numeral placement. He taught them to village leaders and people who needed to count large numbers. For a real life example of something similar happening, Futhark (the Nordic runes) were intelligently created and composed of lines for inscription of metal and wood, although it would probably take someone much smarter than the creator of Futhark to invent numeral placement.

>it'd be pretty hard to write those symbols with your mouth

I always thought that the mouth writing was pretty silly, considering that ponies can pick things up with their hooves and wings. This was meant to be written on stone and wood (cave walls, trees, etc.), so it uses lines and dots (the circles can be replaced by dots, but I should have said that in the first post) that are easy to carve. The lines are simple enough to be reproduced on the same scale as the Arabic numbers.

TLDR; 1. Figure it out or read.

2 and 3. This is not Kserf.

4. Decimal does not real in Equestria.

5. Mouth writing doesn't make sense.

>Kserf brushed more advanced parts of language away

More complicated systems does not make a language more advanced. Fresk takes inspiration largely from a slightly simplified version of Slavic languages, dividing words into four morphemes (prefix, root, suffix, and postfix), and having only three tenses and those three tenses being able to conjugate the entire word, instead of just changing the article and postfix. The only real "dumbing down" done to the language is the limitation of all sentences being addressed to the speaker by default, but I've been against that idea since the start, and have designed the language to accommodate both the intended way of speaking and a more human centric way.

Other than that, you're allowed to do whatever the hell you want, since all of this is just headcanon rambling of a dropout linguist.

>Далекарлийские руны

Those were "in development" for almost a millennium and have come about through trial and error, not a single person coming along and going "This is what you'll use now, you're welcome".

That makes a little more sense now, thanks. Although, from the PDFs, it seems more simplified than just the implied I. There is no way to signify cases, making sentences rely almost entirely on context.

<Help happy

<Help scared

These could both mean "Help, I am happy/scared", or "Help me become happy/scared". I don't see any words that allow for the kind of cases that exist in Slavic languages, or morphological cases. I'm not sure if my PDF viewer isn't working correctly or if I'm missing something. It seems like you started this and someone else made the PDF version.

This is radically different from that, since the entire language is made out of verbose "KEEK" words

Oh hey, that's the site that inspired this project. It died for a while but I guess someone rebuilt it. Still just a shitty AB Cipher though
