We’ve inherited a system that wasn’t supposed to last as long as it has. It’s not supposed to be supported, it’s supposed to be replaced.

I live outside of New Orleans, in a quiet suburb. We lost power for 12 days following hurricane Ida. It was the second most costly storm ever (behind Katrina), and the most powerful to ever hit Louisiana.

There are very large power lines that span the Mississippi River. The towers they attach to were designed to withstand category 5 winds. Under category 3 winds one of the towers buckled and collapsed, and the other was badly damaged. Why did they call over? Maintenance and age.

Concrete bridges are designed to last a maximum of 100 years. Extreme temperatures (such as the cold of the Midwest or heat in the South and Southwest) and de-icing salts knock that down significantly. When they fall, everyone asks who’s responsible. At the same time, no one wants to pay for new shit.

Being fit is always good but intelligence beats muscle and in survival situations smaller people actually fair better because they eat less and are more efficient and usually smarter.
