It all broke down with John Paul II who was the first Pope to say there are many ways to God. After the second Vatican council the church decided to stay out of politics and adapt to the modern times. This is why Catholics being one of the largest demographics in the west have no real power in politics.

This is just stupid. Not only is the Pope directly in charge of the Department of Works (ie the Vatican Bank) but all of the Church's property in sum toto. That makes him automatically one of the richest people in the world, if not THE richest person. Nobody even knows how much money and property the Church has. It's a lot though.
He's also the thought and political direction-mover of the Church and its 1.5 BILLION members. He is unquestionably one of the most powerful individuals on the planet.

And you said it yourself, there are 1.5 billion Christians and they have little to no influence over politics in the West. If they did would there be gay marriage, no fault divorce, feminism, and racial politics? Just look at what is in front of you.
