8kun's image thumbnails nearly all looked like that for a long time. There was a site policy in place which made image hosting only temporary. The join or 404 image is meant to be displayed when an image expires. As you can see, though, the image uploads are still there.

I think we're seeing these thumbnails as some kind of glitch related to the sudden influx of traffic to the site. Bear in mind we're refugees from a site with code that wasn't updated since 2013.
