I guess I'm geeking out about this and maybe talking to myself at this point, but powering all refrigeration units (say two box freezers and two refrigerators) can be done pretty easily off-grid today. The issue is cost of-course but if you have the savings you could invest in a 5000 watt power inverter (which will have two pairs of positive/negative connection cables) and two 200Ah 12V deep cycles. As long as you have a means of solar energy you could re-charge them both off-grid and use them intermediately just enough to keep the freon running every once in a while keeping all your foods cold. In an off-grid SHTF scenario that can be a life saver if you have half a cow worth of beef and other frozen foods. A standard residential home solar panel system could juice enough power easily for recharging operations.
