I have been thinking about creating a large physical library of books by printing and binding the literature found as pdf files here.

Does any anon here have any knowledge about the whole book binding process? Any idea on the sort of costs that this world incur and if there are any little secrets to doing this cheaply? Perhaps a company that usually binds graduate theses would be cheap?

I just think it would be a worthwhile undertaking to create physical copies of some of the books here, and start a collection.

I made a "book" once. Basically it was just folding paper and sewing it together, and adding a fabric cover with glue. If you're printing something short like the Protocols or some other pamphlet-tier writings then you can easily make books of them. It's going to be a bit rugged though. I think with time and experience you'll be able to make perfect leather-bound books. You just need to experiment with the right glues and techniques.

I think this is what I used: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-bind-your-own-Hardback-Book/

I forgot to mention that I had some entrepreneurial ideas. I was thinking of printing uncopyrighted classics and selling them. Ink was extremely expensive. I didn't know it costed that much. I figured that places like barnes and noble were just overpricing books because they could. But no, it's pretty expensive. If you're just working with a household printer then it's probably not going to be economically efficient.

in my own experience with doing this, creating paperback/softcover books is cheaper/faster, but it may be more convenient to seek the help of a company to do this for you.

what >>9855 is describing is called saddle-stitch binding and works best for works under 100 sheets in length. works between 100-300 sheets are more suited for softcover paperbacks. Works that are longer than 300 sheets can still be created using softcover but are more fragile over time, and are usually made with hardcover binding instead. Also, if you still want to completely construct it on your own, then seek out cheaper paper such as typing paper (I've found it in thrift stores in bulk for cheap) and printing on a smaller paper size will save on ink as well.

You can get book binding machines from Alibaba. I looked it up a while ago because I was interested in binding books. They can cost several thousand dollars.
