depending on where you are, the cops can be either really cool or huge dicks to you for being a hobo.
up in spokane, WA some of us had a camp setup along the spokane river, right near one of the bridges. they let it stay up during the winter, but when summer came they did the standard eviction process.
the biggest thing is to not trash your living area, and by extension don't share a camp with anyone who you don't know well or don't trust to actually help keep it clean. if you keep a clean camp, you're already putting yourself a notch above 80% of the hobos out there, and there are atleast some cops who will recognize this and not give you shit for being camped in a spot that's technically illegal.
other than that, don't shoplift for unimportant or trivial shit. it's better to spend a few days flying a sign and save up than it is to risk getting caught.
