What are self-sufficient lives like?

Very hard and expensive (depending on where you want to go) to set up.

Very easy and cheap to live in after set-up. Mostly you'll be working on planting/growing/building 6 months a year, and sitting pretty eating/drinking for the other 6.

Where does your income come from when living self-sufficient? Total self-sufficiency seems very hard, in most places you at least have to pay property taxes and such. Also there are things like major unexpected health problems where you're kind of better off just folding and going to a hospital.

Farming, hunting or maybe some sort of crafting. The idea with self-sufficiency is rarely 100% independence and more like 90% where you only need to make a little money each year.

I was wondering what the actual numbers look like. That 90% may actually be more or less depending on where and how you farm, I think. It's my dream to one day buy some land, quit my job, and start a farm, but I'm having trouble budgeting and figuring out how much savings is enough, and how much land I'll be able to afford.

You ever seen an amish guy on a farm? That's what self sufficiency looks like.

make your own clothes from linen

grow your own linen from flax.

your own leather from cattle

make your own plates from clay you dug up.

cut your lawn with a scythe

water your plants by hand

carry buckets of water up from the river every day.

or pump water from a well by hand.

Self-sufficiency isn't solar panels and windmills, because once those things break what will you do? Instead you need to start living like you don't have those things already. THEN you'll be on the bath to being self-sufficient.

You're better off buying countryside, towing portable offices you buy on (shipping container kind, used probably). Make a small 3kwh solar array, shit in a out house, add water system and water storage/collection. Only problem is internet, and property taxes. With a shop and market niche you can easily pay property taxes.

He is right though. If you can't make it, make without.

There are heaps of places that are going through a population crisis where the youth are running off to the cities and the elderly are dying and the city is giving the land away for free. A lot of them might say something like you must develop the land in hopes of bringing in job opportunities to the township though.

3d printers + bacterial cellulose or muskin may be options for clothing.

Those places are often shit. The people are leaving because of crime, local government fuckery, shit neighbors, no jobs and pisspoor local economy. It's like the $1 houses in Detroit, people are leaving for a reason.

Not to say there aren't plenty of small, rural communities where land is cheap(ish) and life is good, but they're not gonna be the ones "having a population crisis".

No offense, I'd like to help out a fellow traveler and all, but you must be retarded if you "searched but found nothing". What did you actually do? Put "cheap farmland" in Google? Even that would give you some useful results.

Aim for 80% self sufficiency, there's always some tech you'll want in your life that makes things a lot easier and more efficient. Especially food wise you can do many things yourself, there's lists online how many plants of each type you need in order to feed a person the whole year.

Learn gardening, cooking, canning, wild edibles and buy some foods in bulk (rice, barley, oats, beans, lentils, etc. mostly grains and legumes). Have hand tools but don't be afraid to use power tools - they save you time and effort. You'll have enough work on your hands that you'll appreciate them.

Know your seasons and how to check your buildings and tools for wear and damage, as well as how to repair them adequately on time.
