Ah shit I've just posted a whole bunch of jargon. I'll see if I can explain it.
The basic concept is that people need to always feel like they are moving forwards in their lives, achieving something, etc, and the rate at which this needs to happen appears to be fairly constant.
This progress can be in any direction. It can be through accumulating stuff, making your life more ordered, participating in a movement through Twitter, getting friends, anything. The point is that it has multiple dimensions.
Before Russia got involved, there was enough stuff, entertainment, motion in the world that all U.S. citizens could feel like they were moving forward. When Russia started fighting back, it blocked some of the dimensions that some people in the U.S. were using to make themselves feel good. Those people then had to go on to encroach on their fellow countrymen to achieve the required level of motion.
This explains most of what has happened since about 2013 I believe.
