The US has told Lebanese officials that Saudi Arabia is prepared to deploy hundreds of millions of dollars to reconstruct their war-torn country if Lebanese army commander Joseph Aoun is elected president, one senior Arab official and one former senior US official told Middle East Eye.

“The Americans are dead set. They do not want any other candidate but Aoun,” the senior Arab official told MEE. “Hochstein has tied Aoun’s election to Saudi Arabia bankrolling Lebanon’s reconstruction.”

Jihad Azour, a senior banker at the International Monetary Fund, is considered a second pro-US candidate.

The ceasefire also deepened the US’s role in Lebanon by creating a committee composed of Israeli, Lebanese, French, and US delegates alongside a UN official to handle violations. The committee is headed by US Major General Jasper Jeffers.

Indonesia, much like founding BRICS member India, enjoys good relations with Western countries, and is unlikely to take sides in the geopolitical showdown between the US and its rivals.

"If Indonesia can maintain its non-aligned position and influence the BRICS agenda with its inclusive view not to exclude or negate the West, I think it [membership] might not have much impact for our relations with the West," according to the expert.

He had been a major proponent of the 2011 Egyptian revolution that ended the decades-long rule of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. He also worked on the campaign of Mohammed el-Baradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who ran for the Egyptian presidency after Mubarak's rule ended after the Egyptian revolution. 

Abdul Rahman helped to establish the group Kefaya in Egypt, otherwise known as the Egyptian Movement for Change.

His sister, Ola, has spent four years arbitrarily detained in Egypt on what are widely believed to be unsubstantiated terrorism-related charges.

His father, Yusuf, who died in Qatar in 2022, was arguably one of the most prolific and published Islamic scholars and a household name in the Arab world. 

Abdul Rahman called out the “Zionist Arabs”, referring to the leadership of the UAE, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and indicated his hope that their governments may be toppled next by a “flood of change”.

The flood, he said, had already begun in Gaza, where the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation was launched by Hamas on 7 October 2023. 

“This warrant is politically motivated and serves as a tool for suppressing dissenting voices, making Al-Qaradawi’s arrest part of a regional campaign targeting activists and intellectuals,” the Swiss-based Committee for Justice (CFJ) said in a statement on Tuesday.

On 16 January, Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), traveled to Syria, where he met U.S. military commanders and servicemembers, as well as our Defeat-ISIS partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), to get an assessment on the ongoing Defeat-ISIS campaign and efforts to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group in the region as well as the evolving situation in Syria.

Maj. Gen. Kevin Leahy, Commander of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), and Brig. Gen. Michael Brooks, commander, Combined Special Operations Joint Task Force- Levant (CSOJTF-L), accompanied Gen. Kurilla in Syria.

Gen. Kurilla also visited the al-Hol displaced persons camp in northeast Syria. Al-Hol and al-Roj camps house over 40,000 displaced personnel, many with ties to ISIS. Without international repatriation, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts, these camps risk creating the next generation of ISIS. Additionally, over 9,000 ISIS detainees from over 50 different countries remain in over a dozen SDF guarded detention facilities in Syria, a literal and figurative 'ISIS Army' in detention.

Gen. Kurilla emphasized that CENTCOM remains focused on supporting the repatriation of al Hol and al-Roj camp residents back to their countries of origin. Gen. Kurilla also reiterated CENTCOM will continue to work with the international community to transfer ISIS fighters to their countries of origin for final adjudication.

Gen. Kurilla’s visit to Syria capped off an eight day trip to nine locations: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in the Red Sea, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.
