The two men headed to the Hilton Hotel in Sherman Oaks, California in the late Spring of 1986 were on their way to meet representatives of the mujahadeen, the Afghan fighters resisting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

One of the two, Ted Gunderson, had had a distinguished career in the FBI, serving as some sort of supervisor over Special Agents in the early 60s, as head of the Dallas field office from 1973-75, and as head of the Los Angeles field office from 1977-1979. He retired to become an investigator for, among others, well-known attorney F. Lee Bailey. And all along the way, Gunderson, whether or not actually a CIA contract agent, had been around to provide services to various CIA and National Security Council operations, as he was doing now.

In more recent years Gunderson was to become controversial for his investigations into child prostitution rings, after he became convinced of the innocence of an Army medical doctor named Jeffrey McDonald, who had been convicted of the murder of his wife and three young children in the 1970s. This has led to various attempts by the patrons and operators of the child prostitution industry to smear Gunderson's reputation.

Michael Riconosciuto was there to discuss assisting the mujahadeen with MANPADs—Man Portable Air Defense Systems. Stinger missiles were one possibility. If the U.S. would permit their export, Riconosciuto could modify the Stinger's electronics, so the guided missile would still be effective against Soviet aircraft, but would not be a threat to U.S. or NATO forces.

But Riconosciuto had another idea. Through his connections with the Chinese industrial and military group Norinco, he could obtain the basic components for the unassembled Chinese 107 MM rocket system. These could be reconfigured into a man-portable, shoulder-fired, anti-aircraft guided missile sytem, and produced in Pakistan at a facility called the Pakistan Ordinance Works. The mujahadeen would then have a lethal weapon against Soviet helicopter, observation, and transport aircraft.

Riconosciuto was more than just an expert on missile electronics; he was also an expert on electronic computers and associated subjects such as cryptology (see my "Michael Riconosciuto on Encryption").

Riconosciuto was a prodigy who had grown up in the spook community. The Riconosciuto family had once run Hercules, California, as a company town. In the early days (1861) a company called California Powder Works had been established in Santa Cruz, CA. It later purchased land on San Pablo Bay, and in 1881 started producing dynamite, locating buildings in gullies and ravines for safety purposes. A particularly potent type of black powder was named "Hercules Powder", which gave the name to the town of Hercules, formally incorporated in 1900. In World War I, Hercules became the largest producer of TNT in the U.S. Hercules, however, had gotten out of the explosives business by 1940 when an anhydrous ammonia plant was constructed. In 1959 Hercules began a new manufacturing facility to produce methanol, formaldehyde, and urea formaldehyde. In 1966 the plant was sold to Valley Nitrogen Producers. Labor problems led to a plant closure in 1977. In 1979 the plant and site was purchased by a group of investors calling themselves Hercules Properties, Ltd.

However, Michael and his father Marshall Riconosciuto, a friend of Richard Nixon, continued to run the Hercules Research Corporation. In the early 1980s Michael also served as the Director of Research for a joint venture between the Wackenhut Corporation of Coral Gables, Florida, and the Cabazon Band of Indians in Indio, California. Riconosciuto's talents were much in demand. He had created the a-neutronic bomb (or "Electro-Hydrodynamic Gaseous Fuel Device"), which sank the ground level of the Nevada test site by 30 feet when a prototype was tested. Samuel Cohen, the inventor of the neutron bomb, said of Riconosciuto: "I've spoken to Michael Riconosciuto (the inventor of the a-neutronic bomb) and he's an extraordinarily bright guy. I also have a hunch, which I can't prove, that they both (Riconosciuto and Lavos, his partner) indirectly work for the CIA."

Riconosciuto's bomb made suitcase nukes obsolete, because it achieved near-atomic explosive yields, but could be more easily minaturized. You could have a suitcase a-neutronic bomb, or a briefcase a-neutronic bomb, or simply a lady's purse a-neutronic bomb. Or just pull out your wallet for identification and —. The Meridian Arms Corporation, as well as the Universities of California and Chicago owned a piece of the technology.

But there was more than explosives in the portfolios of the CIA agents who surrounded Riconosciuto like moths around a candle. Both Robert Booth Nichols, the shady head of Meridian Arms Corporation (with both CIA and organized crime conections), and Dr. John Phillip Nichols, the manager of the Cabazon reservation, were involved in bio-warfare work—the first in trying to sell bio-warfare products to the army through Wackenhut, the second in giving tribal permission for research to take place at Cabazon. According to Riconosciuto, the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was in charge of the classified contracts for biological warfare research. Riconosciuto would later testify under oath that Stormont Laboratories was involved in the DARPA-Wackenhut-Cabazon project. Jonathan Littman, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle would relate: "Cabazons and Wackenhut appeared to be acting as middlemen between the Pentagon's DARPA and Stormont Laboratories, a small facility in Woodland near Sacramento."

The Race Weapon

Riconosciuto would make additional claims about Bio-Rad corporation, a medical supplier which had gradually taken over Hercules, California. They were also, Riconosciuto would say, covertly engaged in bio-warfare research—producing some of the deadliest toxins known to man. The focus of Bio-Rad's research was said to be bio-active elements that could be tailored to attack those with certain types of DNA. Weapons could thus be produced that were specifically designed to wipe out specific races or genetic classes of human beings. (Alternatively, particular DNA types could be immunized against a deadly biological agent; the agent could then be released, and everyone else would die.)

A couple of years later, Meridian International Logistics, the parent company of Meridian Arms, was to farm similar research out to the Japanese. This included (according to minutes of a corporate meeting dated Aug. 26, 1988) methods for "induction and activation of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes". Associated with Meridian's Robert Booth Nichols in a Middle Eastern operation called FIDCO, a company that ran arms into and heroin out of Lebanon's Beqaa (Bekaa) Valley, was Harold Okimoto, a high-ranking member of the Yakuza. Okimoto had longed worked under Frank Carlucci (who served as Secretary of Defense and Deputy Director of the CIA before becoming Chairman of The Carlyle Group). Okimoto owned food concessions in casinos around the world—Las Vega, Reno, Macao, and the Middle East. (Free drinks and anthrax while you play blackjack, anyone?)

Meeting Riconosciuto and Gunderson at the hotel were two representatives of the mujahadeen, waiting to discuss their armament needs. One of the two was named "Ralph Olberg." The other one was called Tim Osman (or Ossman).

"Ralph Olberg" was an American businesman who was leading the procurement of American weapons and technology on behalf of the Afghan rebels. He worked through the Afghan desk at the U.S. State Department, as well as through Senator Hubert Humphrey's office. Olberg looked after the Afghanis through a curious front called MSH—Management Sciences for Health.

The other man, dressed in Docker's clothing, was not a native Afghan any more than Olberg was. He was a 27-year-old Saudi. Tim Osman (Ossman) has recently become better known as Osama Bin Ladin. "Tim Osman" was the name assigned to him by the CIA for his tour of the U.S. and U.S. military bases, in search of political support and armaments.

Gunderson and Riconosciuto were not on an altruistic mission. They had some conditions for their help. And they had some bad news to deliver. The mujahadeen needed to be willing to test new weapons in the field and to return a research report, complete with photos.

The bad news was that some factions of the CIA didn't feel that Oldberg and Osman's group were the real representatives of the Afghans. Upon hearing this both Tim and Ralph were indignant. They wanted to mount a full-court press. Round up other members of their group and do a congressional and White House lobbying effort in Washington, D.C.

Did the lobbying effort take place? I don't know. There is some evidence that Tim Osman and Ralph Oldberg visited the White House. There is certainty that Tim Osman toured some U.S. military bases, even receiving special demonstrations of the latest equipment. Why hasn't this been reported in the major media?

One week after giving an affidavit to Inslaw regarding the PROMIS software in 1991, Riconosciuto was arrested on trumped-up drug charges. The Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case attempted to cover up Riconosciuto's intelligence background by claiming to the jury he was "delusional." A TV station came and pointed a camera out at the desert at Cabazon and said, "Riconosciuto says he modified the PROMIS software here." Of course Riconosciuto didn't modify the software out between the cacti and yucca. Sand isn't good for computers. He did the modifications in offices in nearby Indio, California. The AUSA told reporters Riconosciuto had been diagnosed with a mental condition, the implication being "he's making all this stuff up". Yes, there had been a mental evaluation of Riconosciuto. I have a copy of the report. The diagnosis? Here it is: NO MENTAL DISORDER. The Department of Justice consistently and maliciously lied to the jury, just as had been threatened by Justice Department official Peter Viednicks if Riconosciuto cooperated with the congressional investigation of PROMIS.

If the war against Osama Bin Ladin (Tim Osman) is not a total fraud, then what is Michael Riconosciuto doing in prison? Why doesn't he have an office next to Colin Powell so he can give realistic advice on Bin Ladin's thinking? And where is Ralph Olberg?

Thirty-four days before the East African embassy bombings of August 7, 1998, Riconosciuto notified the FBI in Miami that the bombings were going to take place. Two days prior to the bombings he requested of BOP (Bureau of Prisons) officials at the Federal Corrections Institution (FCI) in Coleman, FL., that he be allowed to call ECOMOG security headquarters to warn African officials. The BOP denied the request. Riconosciuto was mystified at being ignored by the relevant government authorities. I'm not mystified. I suspect the reason Riconosciuto was ignored was that the relevant parties, including especially the Miami FBI office, knew all along the bombings would take place. And they wanted them to happen.

The same is true with respect to the recent plane bombings of the WTC. It wasn't an intelligence "failure". The terrorist acts were deliberately allowed to happen. The actors may have been foreign. But the stage directors appear to have been all along here in the U.S. Cui bono?

Isn't it time to let Michael Riconosciuto out of prison, and wipe the slate clean of the trumped up drug charges, and let him be a national security advisor—at least with respect to the government's pursuit of Osama Bin Ladin? Isn't it time to quit pretending Osama Bin Ladin came out of nowhere?

This is not an academic argument. Sources say three dozen MANPADs have been imported into Quebec, Canada, from Colombia (where they arrived from Eastern Europe). The missile shipments followed the "northern" drug route—from Colombia into Canada. The missiles involved are Russian Strellas and Iglas. These will serve just fine to take down commercial airline flights. Just like TWA 800. Which group of terrorists has the missiles? Meanwhile, how many biological warfare agents are in the hands of organized crime? Maybe you should ask Riconosciuto about all this.

According to some estimates, tens of millions of Americans have bought into QAnon, whether they know it or not: A 2021 poll from the Public Religion Research Institute found that roughly 30 million Americans believed “a group of Satan-worshiping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation” control “the government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S.” That number grew slightly in 2022, making QAnon as popular as some religions.

We are still in the process of understanding just how much the movement has poisoned our politics. We are still learning the ways in which the beliefs born from an internet movement have reshaped the ways Americans interact with the information they encounter. We are still struggling to understand the disastrous repercussions this movement had in contributing to a mass death event in a global pandemic. But there’s another legacy of QAnon that can be equally hard to account for: the countless private tragedies of loved ones becoming paranoid, obsessive, cruel, and unrecognizable. Parents disowning children, siblings turning on each other, marriages that went cold, and happy families that fell apart.

This is the specific epidemic investigative reporter Jesselyn Cook tackled with her new book, The Quiet Damage. In 2021, Cook wrote an article for HuffPost about the struggles of the children of QAnon believers. In the aftermath, she said, she heard from hundreds of people who reached out with stories of misery and loss, and of suddenly being treated as an enemy in their own home. She dove fully into the topic, and the resulting book tells the story of five families and the desperate efforts to save relationships and pull estranged relatives and partners back to reality.

Cook came out of her reporting with a sense that, more than anything, QAnon—and conspiratorial belief more broadly—is a symptom of difficult times, and that opportunists can successfully push sinister fantasies by capitalizing on all-too-commonplace miseries. Slate spoke with Cook to understand what we can learn from these private stories of damaged lives; how we can better understand the appeal of conspiratorial thinking at a human level; and about who is most at risk of falling victim to it. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Slate: A driving idea of your book is that conspiracy theories should be thought of as emerging from a wellness crisis in America. What do you mean by that?

Jesselyn Cook: As a tech reporter, I went into writing this book looking at this as an information crisis, as a social media crisis. Which I think was, in retrospect, short-sighted of me. That’s not to say that tech platforms aren’t pouring gasoline on an open fire when it comes to the information crisis. But I think I had not considered our society’s collective vulnerability enough. And in chronicling the stories from my book, what really became apparent to me was that this goes deeper than information itself. Conspiracy theories fill a hole: Maybe someone is incredibly isolated and lonely. Or maybe they’ve lost their sense of purpose. Maybe being a digital soldier gives them a reason to get out of bed today. That’s more powerful, I would argue, than the truth. We’ve gone through so much in recent years, and a lot of people are still really suffering from the fallout.

And when we think about the root of this crisis, I think we need to rethink our interventions. I don’t feel that facts can fix this. Debunking tackles the symptom, not the cause. The characters in my book who did manage to climb back out of the rabbit hole did so when their underlying needs were met. That was when the conspiracy theories they’d been clinging to fell away.

How did you end up settling on the five families that you followed?

I wanted to include a diverse group of believers from different walks of life because there’s a tendency to stereotype conspiracy theorists and QAnon believers as conservative white boomers. And that’s very much not true: Anyone can fall into this way of thinking. Conspiracy theories serve different people in different ways. And so when I was deciding who to feature in the book, I wanted to choose people, young and old, rich and poor, from different parts of the country, from different political views. I just wanted to really clearly show that there is no single demographic box when it comes to belief in conspiracy theory. Not race, not class, not income level, education level, the nature of your upbringing. There are very different paths into these delusions.

Two of the stories—those of Alice, a former Bernie Sanders supporter in California, and Matt, a Christian in Missouri—were from the perspective of the QAnon followers themselves, rather than their loved ones. How did those relationship evolve?

I met Alice and Matt on Reddit, and I really got to come along on their journeys as they unfolded. People died. There were two suicide attempts. There were so many twists and turns and tragedies. But for those two in particular, I got to watch what worked and what didn’t as they tried to claw their way out.

What did you observe that worked?

With Alice, we saw her loved ones working to meet those underlying needs that QAnon satisfied, but also trying to restimulate her critical thinking and have her step back and see the big picture.

I have seen “Socratic questioning” and “motivational interviewing” be effective, especially when they’re applied together. Socratic questioning comes down to asking open questions to encourage believers to think through and assess the validity of their own ideas, while at the same time very carefully and mindfully challenging their biases and their blind spots—and doing it from a place of curiosity rather than criticism, and from a mindset of cooperation instead of conflict. Alice and her fiancé became partners in finding the truth. Whenever she would bring him some outlandish conspiracy theory saying that Bill Gates was the devil, they would look at the videos Alice presented, and he would ask questions about them, and try to confirm little details. It’s a long process, to be sure. Socratic questioning can really wear loved ones down because it really takes patience and compassion. And that can be hard when someone is delusional and sometimes cruel, aggressive, and reactive. But for Alice, it opened her mind enough to allow that tiny bit of doubt to seep in.

And at the same time, her father was using motivational interviewing. The goal there is to get the believer to want to put aside their conspiracy theories. So, rather than getting caught up in what was true and what was false, Alice’s dad got her to step back and look at what was happening to her life on a grand scale. Her friendships were falling apart, people were calling her stupid and hateful and cruel, and she was so stressed out all the time. He would ask her, Even if this is all true, how do you benefit from involving yourself so deeply? He was trying to get her to recognize that it was toxic to her.

Those two approaches—one, getting her to gently question her convictions, and the other, getting her to look at the toll they were taking on her in the grand scheme of things—got her to take a step back.

How common is it for someone to find their way out of QAnon?

I definitely don’t think even 2 out of every 5 believers finds a way back out. Matt’s journey out of QAnon is maybe the most remarkable, because he lost everyone who cared about him, his family fell apart, there was no one left around him to pull him back out. He managed to do it by himself after a failed suicide attempt, to start over with a clean slate, which is not a common path, or obviously not one that I would recommend. It is rare to do that—people often break through with the devoted support of a network of people who love them.

And Alice didn’t have a clean break from QAnon. There was always a temptation to go back. She has kind of teetered a bit. But we had many conversations as she was trying to find her footing in reality about her challenges and the allure of QAnon and how it called to her in many ways.

QAnon was centered around cryptic posts on message boards from a mysterious figure called Q, who claimed to have insider information from his high-level government clearance and predicted that Trump would defeat a cabal of satanic child sex traffickers operating among the world’s powerful elites. After Trump lost the 2020 election and the promises of a “Storm” didn’t materialize, Q got a lot quieter. There haven’t been any Q drops in a couple years now. You wrote a book about the grip of QAnon on people’s lives—what about now? How do you still see it as relevant?

Honestly, these days, QAnon has really just blended into the mainstream. I wouldn’t even think of it as a specific movement, or as just people who identify as QAnon followers. It’s a broader populace that subscribes to these views, even without using the label. The QAnon fixation on pedophilia and child trafficking is a serious and very real issue: We’ve seen it distorted and weaponized into something where calling someone a pedophile has become a go-to political attack for some of our elected leaders.

And with the election around the corner, and especially with all the unprecedented events that have occurred in the past month, disinformation is just blowing up, out of control. Q may be gone for now. And while QAnon, officially, as a movement, has gone underground, the damage is done. We see it every single day. I mean, even just on Twitter last night, I opened the app, and one of the main curated stories by the platform was about how Biden was on his deathbed. There was one suggesting that he had been cloned, or Kamala had killed him. It’s no wonder this stuff has become so widely embraced. It’s so normalized.

Do the intervention tactics you discuss in your book apply to people who are not part of a tight group of conspiracy believers but simply picking up conspiracies permeating the broader information ecosystem?

I think they do, because I don’t think it’s just QAnon that satisfies people’s emotional needs. A lot of people I interviewed believed that vaccines were going to kill us all. Signing on to Facebook every day and posting about these killer COVID shots gave them a sense of fulfillment and made them feel like they were important. That they were standing up for what was right and that they were providing a service. And for people who really need that, it’s hard to let go of. Doris, in my book, would not have called herself a QAnon believer. She was mostly sucked in by public health–related myths and disinformation. Doris is quite elderly, and she was mostly stuck at home because she had lost her mobility. She just didn’t have as much in her life that made her feel good anymore. And conspiracy theories gave that to her. She got to be a whistleblower and an investigative journalist and someone who mattered again. So even as QAnon the “brand” fades away, the underlying needs that these conspiracy theories serve are still very much a driving factor.

A sense of belonging is a big motivator, then. In your book, though, you discussed the link between conspiracy theory belief and depression; religious belief; situation- and personality-based anxiety; narcissism; and a longing for a higher calling. That’s a lot of factors. Is there one here you think is most important?

There are a lot of different pathways into this mindset, but I think the common throughline is a sense of powerlessness. Whether it’s perceived or it’s valid, conspiracy theories demand a sort of victim mentality. What conspiracy theorists have in common, at least to some degree, is that they feel that they’ve been wronged and they feel that there is some entity out there that has undue power over them. You are victimized by your oppressors, whoever they may be. Many people have very legitimate reasons to feel that way.

In your book, you tell the story of Kendra, a Black woman whose childhood was defined by desperate poverty, violence, occasional homelessness, and racism. You wrote that Black and Hispanic people are overrepresented among QAnon followers, and that they were also targeted by disinformation campaigns.

You see minority groups that in some ways are both victimized and villainized by the conspiracy theories QAnon espouses. I think that can be really puzzling to people on a surface level, but if you consider what conspiracy theory beliefs offer to people, it becomes a little easier to digest. Kendra comes from a remarkably disadvantaged background, and when [her sister] pointed out to her that this is essentially a white supremacist movement, Kendra just couldn’t hear it. Her antiestablishment conspiracy theories really validated this distrust she had in the system. And that made her feel good.

One of the saddest stories of the book, in my opinion, is that of Kendra’s 7-year-old son, Jonah. Jonah buys into his mother’s conspiracy theories and is terrified by them—they’re all about torturing or trafficking children, after all. You wrote that that kind of constant exposure to QAnon could amount to a kind of “toxic stress” that could permanently alter the formation of the preadolescent brain. Do you know of other stories of children being traumatized by QAnon?

The data that exists suggests millions, even tens of millions, of people believe that the world is run by a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles. You can only imagine how many kids have heard this stuff at home—especially over the pandemic, when we were all locked down inside and kids were home all the time. We don’t have a good figure of how many children believe in conspiracy theories, so it’s hard to grasp the scope of this. But BuzzFeed News put out a survey a few years ago asking teachers how often they were hearing conspiracy theories in the classroom. And the response was really devastating—just teachers from all over the country saying they were overwhelmed by the stuff they were hearing at school.

And so I do think we have kind of a subcrisis brewing here. People seem to think that as digital natives, young people are just born with the skills to navigate their complex information ecosystem. But they aren’t, of course. Kids are getting online younger than ever before and spending more time online than ever before. And they’re not equipped to understand deep fakes or reality-distorting algorithms or to understand how disinformation is incentivized on some of our biggest tech platforms. And it feels to me like a disaster in the making.

Do you have a message for people who have damaged relationships with loved ones sucked in by conspiracy theory beliefs?

I think one piece of advice that may be helpful to anyone who has lost a parent or a sibling or a child or a friend to conspiracy theories is that, as challenging as it might be when you’re dealing with the delusion and defensiveness and anger and worse, it’s so important to try to leave open a pathway out. That urge we have to ridicule and fact-check and tell someone they’re wrong and bad makes it so much harder for them to get out. Because even if they do get to a place where they realize that their beliefs are untrue, if they feel that they can’t emerge as someone who is still loved, respected, and valued by the people around them, they’re not going to come out. Conspiracy theory networks are communities. They do offer support and validation. Conspiracy theorists are there for each other. So you really need to let them know, however you can, that if and when they’re ready to come out, you will be there for them, and you will still love them.

With the presidential election on the horizon, we are still seeing some Americans turn to QAnon, a conspiracy movement rooted in cryptic theories that started among supporters of former President Donald Trump.

While studies point to an overall downward trend in people believing in these kinds of conspiracy theories, there are still a large number who do. And not only does this pose a threat to American democracy, it also damages the relationships between QAnon believers and their loved ones.

To answer those questions and more, KCBS Radio's Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas were joined by Jesselyn Cook, an investigative reporter at NBC News who wrote, "The Quiet Damage," which follows five conspiracy theory–torn families to examine the allure behind disinformation and the social havoc it wreaks.

Not long ago, a millennial father of two in the Midwest whom I interviewed was convinced that many of our elected leaders like to feast on the flesh of children. He feared that the world was at the mercy of a depraved club of the richest and most powerful among us, one armed with space lasers and clones.

Most shocking to those who knew him weren’t the conspiracy theories themselves. It was that he had come to believe them. Nearing 40 years old, he was a college-educated, upstanding guy with friends, a family and an established career. How, they wondered, had this perfectly sane person gone crazy?

It’s a question more and more Americans are asking about their own loved ones. As disinformation permeates our culture, the road to QAnon-type territory is getting shorter. Healthy skepticism easily gives way to undue suspicion. The dizzying public reaction to Donald Trump’s near-assassination was a perfect illustration: Observers across the political spectrum raced to fill the information void with baseless assertions that have gained momentum despite mounting evidence to the contrary, revealing a nation increasingly at odds with reality.

After Trump is shot, conspiracy theories flood the internet, creating dangerous ‘spiral’

The statistics are as stunning as the falsehoods. Millions of people now believe that the government, media and financial worlds are “controlled by Satan-worshiping pedophiles,” according to recent polling. These aren’t loosely held views. While reporting for my book “The Quiet Damage,” I talked to people all over the country who had tried until they were blue in the face to make the conspiracy theorists in their lives accept the truth.

But the truth is almost beside the point.

It seems entirely sensible to fight fiction with fact. In spite of passionately professed allegiances to “the truth,” however, ardent conspiracy theory adopters seldom have a desire to be accurately informed. Belief in the unbelievable, in many cases, stems from desperation to meet fundamental human needs, such as feeling valued and having a purpose. Over the last three years, while interviewing hundreds of disinformation-splintered families, it has become clear to me that facts alone can’t fix this. The solution begins with treating conspiracy theory obsession not as a sickness but as a symptom.

‘Woo-Anon’: The creep of QAnon into Southern California’s New Age world

For the Midwestern father, the trouble began after an injury largely robbed him of his mobility — and, in turn, much of his life’s meaning. Once an active family man, he was suddenly stuck in a chair. His wife took up solo hobbies and completed the housework alone; his children played with friends instead of with their dad. If he couldn’t fulfill his role as a husband and father in the ways he always had, who was he?

In the QAnon quagmire, which he eventually stumbled into online, he was a patriot helping to bring “deep state” corruption to light. One of the good guys fighting the good fight. Someone who mattered again. During his gradual journey from QAnon-curious to feverishly embracing the most crackpot claims, his critical thinking skills didn’t mysteriously vanish — they were overpowered.

Human needs are just that: needs. Our innate need for things such as meaning and belonging is superseded only by what the body requires for subsistence, and not by any thirst for accuracy or truth. When these needs go unmet, we can become desperate to satisfy them by whatever means necessary. And the conditions that leave people deprived of what they need and susceptible to irrational conspiracy theories are common — and commonly overlooked.

Opinion: The lasting threat is not the ‘next Trump,’ but the MAGA base

In movements such as QAnon, the lonely find belonging, the aimless find direction and the angry find validation. Consider baby boomers, who share an alarming amount of fake news online. Many people believe that some mix of cognitive aging, poor digital literacy and too much Fox News is to blame. But this overlooks a bigger issue. Conspiracy-theory-entranced seniors have described to me how, before adopting a QAnon-like brand of what some called “activism,” they felt as if society no longer valued or had use for them. Facing what experts have identified as an “epidemic of loneliness,” they yearned for purpose, community and fulfillment.

By their nature, conspiracy theories provide all of the above. They give supporters an enemy to oppose and a cause to rally around. It’s not difficult to see how churning out Facebook posts (errantly) warning about killer COVID vaccines could have felt like a gratifying self-appointed job in retirement. Or how latching onto delusions that offer convenient answers and clear villains in times of debilitating uncertainty can restore feelings of agency and security.

There’s no singular mold of conspiracy theorists or set of circumstances that shapes them. In my research, I’ve encountered people of all generations, classes, races and political leanings. All had their own reasons for believing and their own needs to satisfy. A political psychology study published on factors that predispose people to conspiracy theories shows that those less capable of “bouncing back” from hardship are more susceptible, suggesting that espousing these views can be a crutch. At the deepest level, then, it doesn’t necessarily matter to believers whether Taylor Swift is truly a psy-op or chemtrails are poisoning the skies. What matters is how clinging to such convictions serves the believers’ underlying needs.

In the end, it wasn’t the truth that saved the Midwestern father, though he has come to see it clearly again. After badly damaging his life at rock bottom of the rabbit hole, he carved a long, sometimes bizarre and profoundly difficult path toward recovering his sense of purpose as a parent and partner. Only then did the ludicrous lies he’d been so consumed by lose their hold over him. He no longer needed them.

Success stories like this will remain rare if we don’t shift our approach to this crisis. We’re living in a moment where a slew of critical stressors, including an unprecedented election season and an artificial intelligence boom, are fueling a tsunami of disinformation and leaving many of us mentally and emotionally compromised. As more Americans turn to conspiracy theories to cope, we must remind ourselves that we can’t do away with delusions that meet people’s fundamental needs by simply debunking them. We need to focus on the cause, not the symptom — to look past the lunacy and probe the roots of our collective vulnerability — because none of us is as immune as we would like to think.

What needs to be understood to appreciate whats going here is the fact the Q is basically creating a circular flow diagram that can be referenced and cross-checked with news releases. Q can’t just disclose specifics about a situation or operation without violating security protocol. Instead they drop questions and statements that lead to answers that can be understood once the subject becomes public. This provides the validation necessary for the public to believe The Great Awakening is legit. Disinformation and misdirection with Q is real. In other words Q is pointing over there but really the focus is here and only until you publicly get the news can you go back and understand. (Think SA drops) All of this is accomplished without giving up specific details about the operation. It’s quite genius.
