It's good for both file sharing and discussion. Saying that, while it claims it's very protective, you need to tweak the options to make it truly encrypted. You can have multiple disposable accounts easily made if you don't want everything tied to one name. One thing it does ask of you is a phone number but I just use a temporary, disposable phone number I can easily find online from various sites. This also allows you to make bots as well and they have a list of ones peoples are sharing.
Either way, it's better than discord from what I've seen. I only use discord to coordinate fighting game matches with people and Telegram can do that just fine.

Discord is better for large groups of people that have lots of images being posted, so you can section them off to different channels but still be a part of the same "community". Telegram just has everything in one big stream.
I'm not a fan of discord selling my data either, but unfortunately that's the world we live in. I'm just glad I don't have to use skype any more
