Oh I got one.
Replace rations with more ammo. Then encourage your soldiers to eat whatever's in the field or just eat the enemy.
I call it the spergook special. :^)

The best ration comes from a mess hall and not a plastic sack. Feed your troops freshly cooked food whenever possible, never rely on MREs to keep a soldier happy, healthy, and effective in combat. I’d have to say the best MRE would consist mostly of meat and easily digestible sugars with a vitamin supplement on the side. This keeps soldiers happy and energized. If I had to outline it, it would look something like this:
Breakfast:
Chicken and potato in white sauce
Oatmeal with dehydrated fruit
Chocolate hazelnut spread
Blackberry Jam
Flat, dense shortbread cookies
Instant coffee
Whey protein shake
Cream
Sugar
Salt and Pepper
Tabasco
Vitamins
Book of matches
Soft pack cigarettes
Lunch:
Pork and Rice
2x varied meat spread cans
Rye crackers
Chocolate bar
Shelf stable skittles (or anything of the sort.)
Instant coffee
Electrolyte and Carbohydrate beverage powder
Cream
Sugar
Salt and Pepper
Tabasco
Dinner:
Beef and veggie stew
Teriyaki Jerky
Shelf stable bread
Shelf stable pound cake with nuts
Tea
Instant Coffee
Cream
Sugar
Salt and Pepper
Tabasco
Overall, lots of protein and creatine, carbs, with some fiber thrown in to keep things regular. Still though, get your soldiers a cooked meal as much as you can.

Watching Steve's videos, the one thing that strikes me about so many rations is that they're filled with essentially snack food without any sort of substantial meal portion to it. Two cans of pate, some crackers, bouillon cubes and some flavored beverage powder isn't enough of a meal for an office worker, let alone some guy out sweating his ass off in the field. I also often see an oddly large amount of candy in modern rations, which I can only assume is there to boast the on-paper calorie count. If I were to make a individual meal ration I'd prioritize a genuinely filling ~800 cal main, with only maybe one packet of crackers, one beverage packet and a couple sauce packets or something.
On a related note, in survival rations it's always just a bunch of hard candies that you're supposed to suck on. I'm sure there's a bunch of official bullshit reasons for why, but I can't help but think that a survival ration should literally just be a brick of pemmican rather than fucking candy.

Japan just officially resumed fishing whales commercially and normalfags over here are losing their minds and screech autistically. However, I hear whale meat is absolutely delicious. Can you work it into a ration and will it have higher energy density than, say, pork?

It's not meant to be a full meal to be eaten all the time. Rations are meant to be something to keep you going for when you can't get to the mess hall or have a field kitchen to cook real food.

I think most rations do that deliberately, the idea being that with lots of little portions you can just pack up the rest and go if your mealtime gets interrupted. They also generally favor finger-foods that you can eat on the march.

it's because people in the field are expected to snack rather than sit down for a meal, and the candy is to just pack calories in cheaply.
modern rations often do have a proper main but it's a smaller portion than you'd get at a restaurant. the idea is that all the snacks get stuffed into your pockets and you eat them whenever, but the proper main is for when you really are just in transit or sitting about doing nothing else
>one beverage packet and a couple sauce packets or something.
even a proper modern canadian IMP has two packets of "sports drink" it's recommended to save it as dessert since its basically flavored sugar and some coffee and some instant milk or cream. meals are pre-garnished with things like plum sauce or soy sauce or what-have-you that's generally a bad idea to stuff in your pockets. stuff like peanut butter and jam and packets of salt and pepper are always available.

What's wrong with wet french fries buried in cheese curd? What's wrong with a turkey sandwitch dipped in gravy to create a soggy mass around the meat? What's wrong with deep frying fish tongues? What's wrong with blended pork meats mixed with garlic spread? What's wrong with putting random vegetables in a burlap sack and boiling it? What's wrong with soaking hard bread overnight in water and serving it with salt cod and cubes of pig fat? What's wrong with filling a pie crust with lard and calling it a day? What's wrong with leaving fish out in the sun to rot and layering it with pork and beef it in a classic pie? What's wrong with covering beef with sugar and turning it into a deep fried candy? What's wrong with grinding up a lobster and mixing it with 1:1 ratio mayonnaise by weight, then injecting it into a hot dog bun to make a meat eclair? What's wrong with boiling bologna sausage and calling it soup?
The only good canadian food items are maple syrup, smoked salmon and nanaimo bars

Not quite. A po boy is just a fried shrimp sandwich for the most common form. But any type of fried seafood would do.
Also, while we're on the topic of Canadian dishes, I tried poutine recently. It's ok, but I don't really see the hype to it.

A po boy is just shrimp, clams, or a fish fillet that have been fried and put on a bun with mayo, lettuce, and maybe tomatoes, there's no grinding or injecting involved.

poutine is peasant food. its made of cheap stuff, and is high energy and filling.
before the rest of the west caught onto it, it was more of a snack bar food, like hot dogs or, uh, any other topped fries dish.
in fact, we have chili fries as a staple too, but it's "frites sauce" and is only necessarily a tomato sauce, but not always a tomato chili sauce

Curry rice and beans & rice w/sauce should be in every country's rations. They're both ridiculously dirt cheap to produce, provide a decent set of macros, and just cooking a tiny amount of meat scraps into them can make them 100x more appetizing from the sauces absorbing the meat flavor, even if it adds very little actual protein. Add some lentils and green peppers to the curry, and you're on your way to better quality food than half those soldiers probably eat at home.
