People forget you don't want a BIG STRONG WORKING BADASS dog unless you want to get yourself shot in the face trying to control it's impulsiveness. Carrot and stick. Make dog do what you want and reward it, dog doesn't listen punish it. Repeat and slowly reduce the carrot until no carrot is required but still occasionally appears for good behaviour.

Carrot should be an unique and special treat, say a piece of sausage and a lot of fuss and attention.

If the dog gets bored and isn't interested you stop and just go home. You can't force it to learn and you're wasting your time.

I'm training a dog at the moment and these fundamentals just work. If you get them early you can teach them to sit. If you have multiple dogs you can use one already trained as an example to the puppy.

You are right. The Arg. Dogo isn't a popular breed, they are expensive and most of it's owners are people who uses the dog in specific jobs (like hunting - among hunters they are trendy). Inexperienced owners who had the dogo thinking it is another "regular pet", like a Pug, most of them had problems with it, because of the dogo's dominant temperament and strength. It's an animal created to fight, who hunts hogs and pumas, and because of that their treatment, training, accommodation, food, and everything else must be especial.

Not an expert on Dogo Argentino, but my understanding is that the primary concern with them is other animals, since they were bred to be a fearless hunting dog. If the neighbor's dog evokes a prey response, it can get ugly very quickly. This is a dog that could easily kill most other breeds.

Yeah, the basis of the breed is the Perro de Pelea Corodobés, a very aggressive and volatile fighting dog. All the people that I know who have the Dogo Argentino live in farms and none of them have problems with dogos or other hunting dogs attacking other animals. They only hunt under command of the owner. Just keep in mind that I know a little about bandogs but I'm not an expert on animal behavior.

I work at a shelter, and we get a lot of pits. First pit I worked with was the most friendly dogs that ever came in. He was active and not afraid to play tug-of-war, but he never took things too far. He had this pink rabbit chew toy that he always carried and it remained in perfect condition. No broken stitching, no stuffing, no tear in the fabric, it was good as new outside the slobber from having it in his mouth. I only got to work with him once because all the others were hogging him. The other pits I've worked with, with one exception, are all friendly to humans, but aggressive to other dogs. The exception was a surrender who desperately needed attention. She would cry if someone wasn't with her, so we had to pair her up with another dog as a support animal and they had to be adopted together. They're all from the South and some of the dogs have been clearly abused and overbred, so it's pretty remarkable that they trust people at all.

I'm asuming you're refering to pitbulls. Pitbulls (like every other breed) were bred for a specfic purpose and temperment. The aggresive and violent nature of the pitbull comes from the terrier line.

I had a Rat Terrier (small dog) and she was far more aggressive than the catahoula. She bit me several times drawing blood twice. Very moody and unpredictable dog.

But, no. The catahoula has been great. A 3 year old climbs all over the one I have, they play together outside. He's been around kids since he was a puppy. Their a different species so you have to train them and teach them how to behave around other species.

We got a stupid cat and I had to acclimate my catahoula to it. Only took about one day and it's like the cat has always been here. The cat would always try to play with him, attacking his tail, jumping at him when he'd walk by, etc. It's been nothing but a good experience with him. They're great dogs that can serve many purposes.

They're controllable dogs that love pleasng the pack leader. But you need to put the time in to establish that relationship. They need alot of excersize and social interaction. Their not bred to sit around all day. They're bred to work and to work hard and if you neglect them (like any other dog) they'll get mean and impulsive.

A male and female goose used to be a wedding gift for newly weds because they were so great to have around the property. 1. Dog breeds should be bred for your climate. Things like Huskies and Caucasian mountain dogs are great for colder climates, but putting them in a desert is basically an act of cruelty.

2. Pick your breed from WORKING STOCK ONLY. If your breed doesn't have working stock, only pet & show stock– then your breed has been POZZED. Sorry, pick another breed. Breeders don't care about genetic quality for purpose, they care about exaggerated looks and related horseshit. They breed complacent lazy dogs with health issues. If you want healthy dogs that deliver, get ones from working stock only.

3. Further: You are better off with mutts from working stock than pure-breeds from pet/show stock. This means you can get great dogs at the pound or on Craigslist. Get some background on the dog and do some genetic testing. Testing for dogs is relatively cheap (compared to a full bred dog) and you can get a mix of two breeds ideally suited to your needs much cheaper than one pure breed dog (likely with tons of health issues).

4. Many of the Dogs listed here are VERY ACTIVE DOGS and many are very dominant dogs. If you are a sit on your ass and watch TV and post all day long kinda guy– then these dogs will destroy your home and run your little cucked life. You won't be able to handle them. The best dogs are built to purpose and only work when you actively use them for their intended purpose.
