I have a cat, but it's a fat fuck (I grabbed one that looked mixed with some "noble" breed instead of a normal one because why not, and of course the bastard is genetically predisposed to put on weight at a rapid rate) and I don't think he'd fare too well against a big rat. I'd need to get some strays. I've owned one before and boy, can those pussies fight! They aren't really good for home ownership because they like to wander who knows where for days at a time and often return fucking massacred after getting into a fight with other cats or, worse, a dog (usually nothing too serious, but we did have one that lost an eye to such a fight, and it's not like it's pleasant to pet your cat and feel scabs fucking everywhere), but they're pretty great mousers – don't expect anything small and alive in vicinity to survive, it even caught a fucking mole once.

If you live rural and want a good guard dog, or a mouser, consider geese. They kill anything smaller than themselves, they are aggressive around most varmints and smaller predators, they eat bugs (keeps your crops safe), and they provide eggs and if absolute push comes to shove - - meat. Guineas are nice too, since they tend to lay more, mature faster, has all the benefits of chickens, at the cost of losing to any predator save snakes. A male and female goose used to be a wedding gift for newly weds because they were so great to have around the property. If you want a real shtf setup, you don't run innawoods or live in populous areas. You already live in a rural farming community, and you shoot any cars that come down your road.

1. Dog breeds should be bred for your climate. Things like Huskies and Caucasian mountain dogs are great for colder climates, but putting them in a desert is basically an act of cruelty.
2. Pick your breed from WORKING STOCK ONLY. If your breed doesn't have working stock, only pet & show stock– then your breed has been POZZED. Sorry, pick another breed. Breeders don't care about genetic quality for purpose, they care about exaggerated looks and related horseshit. They breed complacent lazy dogs with health issues. If you want healthy dogs that deliver, get ones from working stock only.
3. Further: You are better off with mutts from working stock than pure-breeds from pet/show stock. This means you can get great dogs at the pound or on Craigslist. Get some background on the dog and do some genetic testing. Testing for dogs is relatively cheap (compared to a full bred dog) and you can get a mix of two breeds ideally suited to your needs much cheaper than one pure breed dog (likely with tons of health issues).
4. Many of the Dogs listed here are VERY ACTIVE DOGS and many are very dominant dogs. If you are a sit on your ass and watch TV and post all day long kinda guy– then these dogs will destroy your home and run your little cucked life. You won't be able to handle them. The best dogs are built to purpose and only work when you actively use them for their intended purpose.

If you really have to go for the combat doge meme, get a Shar Pei. I used to own one of those, they're prone to a certain kind of skin disease that, depending on where you live, you might have difficulty sourcing proper treatment but they're literally the best possible dog for SHTF.
They're quiet, intelligent, disciplined, deceptively strong and they can absolutely murder dogs 5 times their size. They also don't eat as much as larger breeds.
My old Shar Pei almost killed this gigantic, black English Mastiff getting walked through the neighborhood. Pei got up from it's house, tore down the front gate to my yard, and attached itself to it's neck in like 3 seconds flat and all without uttering a peep.
Best part, unlike most other "fighting breeds" Shar Peis listen, even in the middle of trying to kill something. My dad yelled at her the moment this happened and she froze on the poor thing's neck, waited for my dad to come over and pry her off.
Mastiff was fucking shocked.
Shar Pei are hunter-fighters by instinct, they're very sensitive to upbringing. A well kept, well raised and decently trained Shar Pei that respects it's master is probably one of the best dogs you can possibly have. It's great with kids, it'll protect your house, it doesn't require too much exercise and it's reasonably sociable.
A poorly raised or abused Shar Pei, however, is going to kill you.
Another point to the Shar Pei, well raised, it won't(or at least shouldn't) just attack people that intrude on your property, it aught to prefer cornering them and waiting for you to come along and resolve the situation(but it will fuck them up if they try to escape). So you don't have to worry so much about burglars suing you or psychotic neighbors trying to have your dog put down because they don't understand you can't just walk through someone's front yard, into their kitchen and make yourself a sandwich(yes, these people exist).
They're also fucking adorable, like giant, wrinkly pugs.

No idea about the orc thing, never seen geese go ham on each other or other animals but all the geese I've seen were migratory. Maybe the crazy lady geese got fucked up since they gave up on their natural way of life, and now their only concern is to keep the food coming and the other geese in line. If crazy grandma had kids and kept breeding the geese like that, it might eventually turn into some new species of bird hunter that doesn't even fly, kind of like those south american birds.

German Shepherds do have a problem with overbreeding. It gets increasingly hard to find German Shepherd breeders that actually produce healthy dogs. Most have some sort genetic issue or become plain crazy.
Malinois might be better but they're pretty ugly, tbh.
My pick would be the Great Pyrenees mountain dog.

I have a Carolina dog. They look like power lifting dingos that can knock a full grown man over, kill vermin for fun (fucking chased and ate a 3 inch palmetto bug that flew in the house), barks at niggers, barks at anything close to the door, can run 30mph, has radar ears that hear everything, giant mouths with vicious teeth, and is self-sufficient if left alone outside for a while due to being just a few generations removed from being wild dogs. Mine has no problem charging at larger German Shepherds or Rottweilers and is extremely suspicious of animals it doesn't know.
They're too wild to be useful for hunting, but are great for home defense, companionship, and vermin.
Mine's a lot bigger than average at 70lbs. Most are around 50. Pic isn't mine.
