>Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Mostly war-themed space opera in the literal sense. Lots of good classical music, character development, story drive. There are more than 100 episodes to chew through, and most battles suffer from Dragonball syndrome, but it's still very good and exciting. You never know what is going to happen next. I suggest watching an episode or two a day to not burn out.
>GATE
Not really /k/, but it gets an honorable mention for having some very /tg/ moments. Basically: What if HFY shitting all over D&D in a nutshell. Also features extremely stupid characters and I honestly believe it would be better if it didn't have any harem aspects to it. The animation starts out good to very good, but gets bad towards the end.
>Jin-Roh
Go in blind. It's honestly better to just watch it without anyone telling you more about it. The music, animation and story are all fantastic.
>Grave of the Fireflies
It's a Ghibli movie, so I don't have to say anything about quality. While it's not about the war itself, it is about the effects it has on a boy and his little sister. If you are not in it for the feels, you are not in it at all.
>Ghost in the Shell
There are three movies and two TV shows of it. Don't watch the most recent live action movie. It's shit.
It's cyberpun/k/, cybernetics make you a better oper8tor. It's honestly good, even though the first movie kind of blueballs you with a typical "read the mango" ending.

If you're not afraid of spoilers:
It turns out the old man used to be part of American special forces during the Korean or the Vietnam War, it's not specified which or at least i don't remember if it is, but the matter was that he was VERY GOOD at assignments and operations.
The Japanese goverment gets involved with trying to capture all these individuals after the protagonist escapes from a private research facility with the help/kidnapping attempt of the old man. They send the SAT against him on one occassion and he wipes them all out with a shotgun. Including all their sniper teams and ground forces.
Something about the old man resurrecting and killing a bunch of other people by delivering a chopped finger to a highly-secured weapons research facility on a skycrapper and then using a sawing/grinder machine to turn himself into paste. Said building had already been assaulted by another ajin team he sent that was captured just minutes beforehand, was filled to the brim with military, police and mercenary forces, and he pretty much wiped out all the targets his captured team missed with only stolen weapons and a baseball bat.

The old man likes Doom and is upset that 99% of japanese gamers are into VNfaggotry, pic 3 related

Sora No Woto is really comfy, and features a lot of barracks shenanigans set in a early to mid 20th century European setting. It's cute to a fault and brings about feels.
If you want something more realistic, the Patlabor films by Oshii Mamoru, especially the second one, is influenced by a lot of real world military incidents from the mid to late 20th century. Jin-Roh is another great film by the same director, where a fictional German Republic beats and occupies a Japanese-British alliance.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not someone who despises cults or think that they should be removed. I follow shinto, and practice zen when possible. However, I don't see Soka Gakkai as a group that will fight for the interests of the Japanese nation in the long run.
Sokka Gakkai (SG) was a sort of umbrella organisation of the Nichiren Shoshu buddhist sect started by two Nichiren educators, who saw that the best way to live life is creating meaning for yourself , but broke away from the sect after the 3rd President, Ikeda Daisaku came to lead SG. I'll save the specifics, but the main points of contention was/were
>Nichiren Shoshu caved into State Shintoism and accepted Shinto talismans during WWII despite Nichiren teachings not to do so. One of Sokka's founders had died in prison after being arrested for defeatist/thought crimes.
>There existed cordial relation between SG and Nichiren Shoshu until Ikeda Daisaku took over as chairman of SG in 1960
>In 1977 Ikeda Daisaku allowed or loosened restrictions on what a "good" Nichiren follower was, and allowing what would have been verboten in the Shoshu sect (not having to leave the house to be a monk etc)
Anyways, from 1977 and at least up until 1991, the two groups operated independently, but with SG more or less following the customs of the Nichiren sect. Although during this time, there were criticisms including (e.g. Claims Nichiren was ripping their followers off by selling stupas) of the Nichiren by SG, nothing major transpired until 1990~'91, when the SG started coordinating targeted criticisms of the Nichiren sect, belittling monkship and so on in speeches and in their newspaper "Seikyo-Shinbun". In 1992, SG sent several hundred of its followers to visit the Nichiren headquarters near Fuji and didn't follow standard Nichiren procedures of pilgrimage, and this act angered the Nichiren Shoshu enough to excommunicate Ikeda and the SG followers. I did base this part mostly from a timeline provided on the Nichiren side so I'm not sure if it's impartial
The following is about the Soka Gakkai in connection to Kalergi. Under Ikeda, the expansion of SG in Japan, and abroad intensified, and Ikeda so happened to be a very ardent follower of borderless Buddhism, believing that saving the souls of billions is best done through integration and cultural understanding, which more or less aligned with the ideas of Kalergi, and his utopian ideals of integrating Europe with Africa, and Japan with the rest of Asia. Ikeda was hailed as "very energetic, life-loving, honorable, friendly and intelligent." by Kalergi.
SG enough people to marginally influence politics, their political party, Komei-Party being in coalition with the LDP. Their policies include giving foreigners the right to vote, and given SG's track record of "Helping refugees with the UN", and "Combating Anti-Semitism with the Simon Wiesenthal Centre", it does add to suspicions that they're not too innocent. Plus, there's some indication regarding Ikeda being the son of a Zainichi Korean, based on his birth place and registry, but its unsubstantiated.
As for the Hatoyama clan who has delivered three Japanese PMs , I'll list some related paragraphs from wikikepedia
Hatoyama Ichiro (PM 1954~1956)
>Ichirō and some members of Hatoyama family are known as advocates of fraternity. During the purge against Ichirō (1946–1951), he received an English book The Totalitarian State against Man originally written in German by an Austrian freemason Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi from a professor of Waseda University Kesazō Ichimura (1898–1950) who wanted Ichirō to translate the English book into Japanese. The English book struck a sympathetic chord in Ichirō, and he began to advocate fraternity, also known as yūai (友愛) in Japanese.
Hatoyama Yukio (PM
>His grandsons are advocates of fraternity.
>鳩山も祖父の友愛思想とクーデンホーフ=カレルギーの友愛思想を政治活動の基本とし[133]、鳩山友愛塾など友愛の名前がついた組織、団体などを設立している。
>Trans. "Hatoyama also bases his political activities on the fraternal ideas of his grandfather (Ichiro) and Coudenhove-Kalergi's. He has founded organizations named after Yuai, such as the Yuai Political School.
As with everything, please take everything I say with a grain of salt, I'm merely a paranoid undergrad who browses a Javanese Mystical Text appreciation forum. I'm not nearly qualified to be a expert, especially on Buddhist ideas and history.

Before and during the war, the Imperial Japanese government had a law called the Public Security Preservation Laws (治安維持法) which had various iterations, but it was largely applied to socialists and communists. Later on in the war, the law was used to jail dissident writers, pacifists, and cultists for undermining national unity. Also there was the Lèse-majesté laws (不敬罪) that outlawed overt criticism of the Emperor and the Imperial household.
It's hard to explain Peace Preservation Law without the context in which an individual was jailed; the guy that was jailed, Makiguchi Tsunesaburo, refused to accept State Shinto by denying to include a Shinto Talisman in the worship of Soka. He was already like 70 when he got thrown in the can and died in prison.

>those images really remind of Girl's Last Tour
It's probably why I saw it in the first place tbh
>That also had a bunch of German WW2 shit like uniforms, rifle and vehicles.
>But ultimately it was all completely superficial and had zero bearing on the plot or setting. It's like somebody wrote a generic shaggy dog story and then heavily localized it because "we want that wehraboo demo".
The author of the original manga, tsukumizu, has said that the addition of military themes were because he was watching "Saving Private Ryan" around the time he thought of the manga and thought that the Kettenkrad would be pretty neat for travelling*.
I agree and think that the inclusion of military themes is ultimately superficial. However I would also say that the disconnect between the violence of those themes encapsulate and it's use by young girls, and not soldiers, added serious insight into the sort of desperate situation of the world the girls are in.
>Why else bother including such elements when they're so divorced from their historical context? I thought GLT was an enjoyable animu but the German tech and fashion kind of clashed with the futuristic setting that had robots and megacities, and didn't add all that much for me.
I don't know if tsukumizu wanted to make a futuristic dystopian story though. He seems to be more affixed on the philosophy and aesthetics of despair and necessity. I strongly recommend you read the manga, or at least books 5 and 6 the girls abandon their kettenkrad, Chii's rifle, and at the end, their helmets. I definitely enjoyed SSR/GLT, but I can understand why others might not. Tsukumizu based his world on the one in BLAME! so that might be more of your thing.

Battles take a tiny fraction of soldier's life. The first one is often the last one. Most of their lives is just training, doing chores, screwing around the base, taking a leave and screwing around the city, and retiring. People have been making movies like this for decades, but how do you make a series based entirely around this, is anyone's guess.

I'd make each episode 3-5 minutes long, and revolve it around an international taskforce of mercenaries traveling the world, fighting generic evil terrorists. Kind of like every mobage the military otaku types like.
>Episode #001
<Academi-chan is a military otaku who is waiting for a reply to her application to a mercenary group full of foreign stereotypes because the JSDF are stubbornly refusing to fight the enemy because they're not threatening Japan… Yet.
>Episode #020 Academi-chan Passes Basic
<by this point every foreigner has become a fleshed out version of their nation's respective mercenary history and each has their own talent to expound upon throughout the story. Legionnaire-chan is hardcore, brutal and old-fashioned, Rhodesia-chan is some kind of superstitious veteran of a thousand wars, Wagner-chan is a drunk Russian with clear ties to Putin, etc.
>Episode #054 Academi-chan Eats Pizza Hut
<product placement by fast food corporations as Academi-chan is led around by excitable blonde American girl who proudly talks about how the US gives their soldiers shit food
>Episode #077 Academi-chan Visits Thailand
<an idealized view of what happens when soldiers are given R&R in a foreign country. Academi-chan meets a friendly local and lots of landmarks the tourist bureau wants to advertise. Prostitution may, or may not be hinted at.
>Episode #088 Academi-chan Tortures Terrorists
<Episode talking about how it's not actually torture when you use a euphemism and enhanced interrogation is very important to protect people from evil terrorists.
>Episode #156 Academi-chan vs. IED-kun
<Oh, no! A US soldier has been wounded by an IED and the team are under attack by evil terrorist forces! They have to defuse another IED under sniper fire and save him!
>Episode #321 Academi-chan Gets Raped And Set On Fire By Mob
<The unpublished end of the series

Those images always infuriate me. They do point out some details, like the guardia civil. but they completely leave out any of the more important observations.
The playing trumpet part was almost completely resolved in the glass factory episode. The change is far too rapid for my taste, in one episode she is shit at it, in the next she plays like an old master of the arts.
The way the girls behave, especially Kanata, is not at all how any military personnel ever behave. It's like they have never been in basic training. I know half of them are kids, but even a three months training should have given them enough discipline to know how to salute properly.
And why the fuck would the tanks use trumpeteers for communication anyways? I get that they have a timekeeping fort for the local population to know what time it is, but why on earth would they use trumpets on the battlefiel? They obviously have speakers inside their tanks. Mount some on the outside as well and you are golden.

Girly Air Force hasn't been mentioned yet. It aired last season and is about air battles against a vague alien force. The girl characters are based on real planes and also fly special versions of those planes. It's very similar to the fictional anime in Shirobako. I don't know much about aviation, but it seems like they were at least trying to give things a veneer of authenticity.

Are the Das Finale movies self contained or are they all apart of one story? I haven't even watched the first one yet because I hate having to wait months or even years for cliffhangers to be resolved. I'd rather wait for all the movies to come out in a few years and watch them all at once.

It's kind of like an OVA series; the first film was two episodes long about an introduction to the new tournament and why the girls have to enter the competition, and then the second part introduced thr French/BC academy vs Ooarai arc, which ended on a cliffhanger.
The second film that went out last Saturday resolved the French arc, and introduced a new arc which also ended on a cliff hanger. I think the formula is something like
Introduction→New Arc→End of prev. arc→New Arc etc…
So perhaps you should watch it every two films, that way you get a contained story plus a new arc every time, if that makes sense.

Yeah, but I feel like that that's just something Sonoda did to just rial up the fans a bit during the ending of Burst. It felt cheap and forced. In the original series, there's no mention of her orientation and to be honest, I've always just assumed that Rally was more asexual and saw her relationship with guns as the closest thing to a sexual partner. It would have been a whole lot better if Sonoda didn't confirm her sexuality and just left it ambiguous. That way I don't have to have a love/hate relationship with my favorite manga.

Since we probably will be missing a lot of content from Kyo-Ani (and I liked them, didn't mind their new anime either), we might as well learn from it; it shocks me that I even think this way, but sadly, the Kyo-Ani attack shows just how vulnerable medium sized multiple story buildings with few exit is to a determined retard with several litres of petrol. What if, in Minecraft land, this was a M〇sque? A Synag〇gue? An 〇TF regional office?
This incident and last week's low energy raid should show the do's and don'ts of utilising primitive thermal weapons, and show that such weapons still have their place in asymmetric warfare, especially in urban areas. Perhaps there should be a thread dedicated to the PDF compilation of the British "Petroleum Warfare Department" documents.

It is interesting from the security perspective. It is not just a "see guys, guns aren't the most dangerous, gun control doesn't work", it goes beyond that. It is proof that you take away certain means of aggression and soon they do find alternatives, and in this case it is actually WORSE by multitudes. The death and injury is extreme in this case, far worse than almost any shooting. It is akin to the truck attacks in Europe, one man with determination and effort used things that aren't usually used as weapons to commit attacks, to what in security is considered an extremely negative end, but an attacker, terrorist, nutjob would consider highly successful? Japan is currently heavily "disarmed" to the point that someone found another means of killing that proved far, far, far more effective than what was barred from him.
From the security perspective, modern buildings are probably pretty safe. Fire codes have changed things radically for new buildings, many public and commercial buildings were changed to suit literal nuclear war scenarios. Some buildings are cheap masonry throughout, not immune to fire, but certainly it would be difficult to impossible for such buildings to burn quickly, if they would really burn at all. New designs are designed for fire safety in other terms, such as egress, with the science being figured out to what kind of routes and exits are needed for safe evacuation. Lessons were learned, ironically, from the firebombings in Europe and against Japan.
This means security for fire attacks comes down to fire safety, egress routes marked out, fire drills to improve evacuation. Keep routes of escape clear, keep them well marked, let everyone know where and how to escape. Sprinklers, fire codes, reducing the threat of fuel sources such as paper and trim, furniture. Tidy workspaces make for easier egress, they also might mean less of a fire hazard; those papers you don't need on your desk, put way in a fire safe cabinet, don't just protect the papers but also reduces the potential fuel load if a fire does occur. We can't let our lives and work be controlled by fire safety only, but things can be done to make things safer for accidental fire and fire attack.
Things to consider for everyone. The odd thing is, as mentioned above, some places have such strong fire codes and building standards that fire attack may be all but useless, contrasting that to certain buildings and setups where they are almost fire traps and at high risk of arson. Still, the idea that arms control disarms people is a fallacy, and an extremely dangerous one at that

Addendum to my tl;dr
I sometimes temper my responses about rules of engagement to suit modern sensibilities and policies, even though I am a feudal, old backwards guy. But this is one case where the old "pike em all, 410,757,864 dead arsonists" is the correct path. Armed security MUST use lethal force IMMEDIATELY when arson attacks are being launched. If you see a man dumping known accelerant on a building to burn it and hurt people, KILL FIRST and ask questions later. By the time you talk to the guy or try to wrestle with him, he might start the fire and your opportunity to save dozens of lives might be lost, and hundreds may die for your lack of decisiveness. DON'T LET HIM IGNITE the source, kill him before he even gets the chance. Once a fire starts, your chance to stop the attack in the first place is over, you have failed. If you react or act quickly in the rare case you witness the man dumping the fuel, before he ignites it, you have the chance to save lives. Don't throw it away, don't hope that wrestling with the man he MIGHT not get to his lighter or other source of ignition.
Same goes with molotov cocktails and the like. Or explosives. Kill first.

>firefighters will have to still put out of the flames somehow, therefore they will be close-by

I've felt really down the past few days, enough to keep me off the board; those people that died that they at Kyo-Ani, they weren't at all evil people, if anything, they were the most innocent and hardworking people working together to create something more beautiful and striking than self fellating "expressionist" garbage that passes as art today. It just pains me seeing reports from fathers and mothers thinking that their sons and daughters will be identified. I know what fire does to humans, what it does to the dead, but worse, to the survivors.
I just hope that most of the poor bastards went off unconscious before the full brunt of the fire burned their bodies. An by god, do I hope the perp gets the best treatment so he can sit his trial and be hanged. He deserves worse than just dying on a hospital bed, and I hope his family gets driven to suicide for giving birth and raising a piece of shit too.

Clannad, Air, Violet Evergarden, Fullmetal Panic (Second Season), Hyoka, Koe no katachi among other things; even if there were things that sucked, there are targets more deserving of death and destruction, like the JCP headquarters, mental health institutes, or a bunch of politicians. Not people who could have went on improving on improving upon what they learned at Kyo-Ani.
And to think that tax payer funded welfare kept the perp alive for 41 years… Retarded NEETs who can't do anything but kill themselves and harming others ought to be euthanised

If it is any consolation, I think only five died from burns, the rest died from carbon monoxide, so it was less painful than it could have been. it is simply a tragedy, an awful one. Innocent people who died horrible deaths.
Do not let it get you down. Stand up straight, honor their deaths, march forward. Feeling bad will not do any good at this point.

I've honestly been noticing this sort of thing happening to me though. I'v ever in getting irrationally angry over completely inconsequential things like someone liking a different art style, food, genre, clothing than me, and I actively have to think to myself "Why am I getting angry to the point of wishing harm and pain on another person for something so little?" Then I noticed that I had never had these kinds of thoughts for such little differences up until I was spending my days posting on the internet for extended periods of time. I thin humanity was not meant to project and be projected upon the constant flow of thoughts and opinions of other people without any social etiquette barriers or need to reflect on how you state something to another person that would naturally come with face to face interaction. This dehumanization has resulted in a far greater amount of people who would genuinely want to kill or at least watch someone endure a painful death simply because their taste differs from them. I've made it a point nowadays to restrict my forum posting time to just an hour or two a day, so as to wean myself from this hyperaggressive behavior.

Let me put it this way. The dub's cancer just found fertile carcinogenic ground on the original work. The protag is a strong independent and extremely unfeminine career dyke and almost the entirety of the cast is engaged in some sort of matriarchal non-heteronormative queergendered relationship.
Thicc lesbian lolies playing doctor might seem all cute and pure at first glance but its whole purpose is to be a controversy bait to keep attention away from the overall degeneracy of the setting.

I specifically stated that I did not know if the specific studio animated it. If they did not write it and did not animate it then they simply did not deserve to be burned alive. I'll wind down the path with you. I think in many ways, when anime presents these things to a conservative Japanese audience it is a big gag. They present faggotry as the butt of jokes, people are laughing AT the homos, NOT WITH the faggotry. The intent is to mock them, not celebrate them, which make them potentially 100% different, the opposite, a 180 degree turn. Western media is trying to celebrate and normalize faggotry, which makes it outright evil, but anime pokes fun at such things.
Which is where things get complicated. Shown in a western audience bombarded by constant faggotry, soon people take something that is making fun of faggots and tries to spin it as pro gay. Anti faggots will be over sensitized to faggotry and jump to this conclusion, pro faggots will try to spin it as pro gay, so soon it is being used as propaganda by the wrong side and there is powerful reaction from the good side. Which is both sides potentially missing the intent altogether. Which is, actually, totally understandable when looked at objectively.
The last twist to make it complicated is the fact that maybe pro faggots DID intend to make it pro faggot from the beginning. But, how do we tell this?

【TARGET: The Animation Industry】
Japanese animation has fans around the world, contributing to the improvement of Japan's national image abroad.
Korea, which for years has held up the “ Discount Japan” (Discredit) as its national policy, wants to take over this industry.
(i.e. to subvert and use it as a pro-Korean and anti-Japanese medium)
