I'll wind down the path with you. I think in many ways, when anime presents these things to a conservative Japanese audience it is a big gag. Anti faggots will be over sensitized to faggotry and jump to this conclusion, pro faggots will try to spin it as pro gay, so soon it is being used as propaganda by the wrong side and there is powerful reaction from the good side. Which is both sides potentially missing the intent altogether. Which is, actually, totally understandable when looked at objectively.
The last twist to make it complicated is the fact that maybe pro faggots DID intend to make it pro faggot from the beginning. But, how do we tell this?
