72b03c No.636927 [View All]
I didn't see any kind of AR General thread so I figured I'd make one. Also wasn't aware of a copypasta info either.
I'm making this thread to discuss configuration, accessories, paint, ballistics, brands and whatever else relates to the assembly, use, and culture of Stoner's magnificent rifle.
AR-10 discussion also welcome.

they work fine for no frills milspec receivers. I have a few and never had a problem with any. If you want more features, get an aero enhanced lower (has a tension screw to adjust fitment between upper and lower, a threaded bolt catch pin to make install easy, and an integral over-sized trigger guard).

Bitch, IT WOULDNT GO IN! Also I think the pin was too long, there was no way I hell all of it would fit, I measured it, the pin would have to break ground though the hole that was premade for it to fit flush.

roughly guessing you were using the wrong pin. Or the wrong hole; I destroyed a lower that way not long ago – drove the pin into the part that was threaded. After much swearing, sweating, smacking, and finally cutting off the excess, I rotated the guard into place … and found the other hole wasn't threaded. But the spring-loaded pin permanently installed held everything in place. I just won't be able to get it back out without drilling.

It wasn't a threaded pin, that was the one that goes towards the front of the gun. It was smooth inside. Wrong pin? I didn't have any other pin left but I'll double check and the o
only other pin I had fitted flush in the lower. I think it was for the trigger or something. I'll double check again but I'm thinking they sent me the wrong sized pin. I don't see any cracks on the lower so it's still solid thankfully.

Buying a prohibited firearm (stripped lowers are firearms) outside your state and bring it in is a crime. Firearms must be shipped to an in-state FFL and processed there. 80% lowers however are not firearms and neither are upper receivers.

Nightforce NX8 1-8x24. Not too much more than an ACOG and a lot more versatile. Only 17oz. There are other (cheaper) 1-6x variables out there but I'd take an 4x ACOG over them.

I only shoot 100-200+ yards (fly-over country). Had no problem finding an affordable 20" free float, flat-top (all rail, no sights), quad rail hand guard = $1200
Also put a $500 basic AR in the safe with ye oldern carrying handle and fixed front sight. Just for parts or DOTR.

>the relationship between AR15 ammo types
Except it doesn't. It just mentions 5.56. The AR-15 is a platform that has been converted something like fifty different ammo types.
.223wyld subforms, like your article discusses,
7.62x39, as a competitor to 300Blk which, like .40short-and-weak shouldn't really exist but does
6.8SPC and its same-brass offshoot .224 valkyrie
6.5 grendel, envisioned for longer range expectations,
.458 socom / 50 beowolf for massive bullet weights
all the pistol calibers: 9mm, 10mm, 5.7mm, .22lr
And that's before getting into popular wildcats like .277 wolverine, .45 v-rap (or the full 45 RAPTOR if you include ar-10 builds) .338 spectre, .400 hamr, probably a lot more.
I don't even notice articles like the one you posted because they consider only a couple popular loadings of 556, without even looking into the full breadth of what can be done by handloading. A good article on bullet selection would be appreciated – a plinking round, a varmint round, a home defense round.
There's a *lot* more to the AR-15 than .223 remington.

Calm down autism-san. 5.56 is easily the most popular chambering for an AR-15. Anyone for whom the graphs would actually be useful or new knowledge, IE the most novice of AR-15 owners, is likely to be using 5.56.
>I don't even notice articles like the one you posted because they consider only a couple popular loadings of 556

>Except it doesn't.
Sure it does. Suppose someone is building a rifle and wants to understand what impact a 10.5" barrel vs a 14.5" vs a 16" vs a 20" barrel will have on muzzle energy for a given bullet weight because they are trying to weigh the opposing forces of cqb indoor maneuverability and outdoor reach out and touch someone, well, the graph simplifies understanding what happens to the muzzle energy with some common rounds.
>There's a *lot* more to the AR-15 than .223 remington.
I could add other rounds but the graph will begin to look like a rainbow and most of those other rounds are not interesting to me and are boutique memes as far as I'm concerned.
For what it's worth, if I were going to build a loud and scary cqb sbr, I'd go with a 10mm because the 10mm has twice the muzzle energy of a .45, the round is intended to produce substantial energy in a short barrel, and it has the same magazine capacity of a 9mm. For a quiet SBR, a suppressed 230g .45 would be nice. I do enjoy shooting the MP5 and 9mm can get the job done but the 9mm doesn't do much for me.
.458 socom is an interesting round due to the many applications it can fulfill because of the wide range of bullet weights but the magazine capacity sacrifice is a turn off in a AR pattern rifle to me. I'd like to own a .458 socom scout rifle.
>>688804
>Calm down autism-san
Yeah, the chart isn't intended for someone who has had his pants around his ankles cooming to /k/ for a significant amount of time. I saw people talking shit on 5.56 sbrs -socom does employ a 10.5" urg fyi- so I made the chart.

So I'm trying to make a list of AR manufacturers/companies to research buying from should I decide to buy/build a couple more rifles. What are some of your guys' thoughts on a sample of my considerations?
>Aero Precision
Always hear great things about them and their ARs being not only affordable for budget-minded people, but also having quality parts compared to PSA or Anderson.
>Palmetto State Armory
Constant sales and deals being offered are how their ARs are able to be built for $500 or under but I hear their QC is a lil lacking and their customer service can be an absolute nightmare to walk through.
>Anderson Manufacturing
Similar to PSA's price-points but I hear about 50% good things & "just as good" talk with 50% of out-of-spec nightmares or simple blemishes/machine marks.
>Bravo Company Mod
Absolutely a great brand to also get quality parts just more expensive past Aero Precision stuff.

If you're looking to build one from scratch and are willing to invest in the tools to assemble it yourself just know that it's pretty damn hard to build a bad rifle from a good barrel and a good BCG. If you're going to spend too much money on any parts, make it those. I usually recommend the SOLGW BCG to frands building new ARs.
>Aero Precision
I've never handled one of their full rifles before, but their blem lowers are the best deal in well-made stripped lowers imo.
>Palmetto State Armory
80% shot you're getting a great rifle that will last tens of thousands of rounds, but they still don't understand how deep they're supposed to stake castle nuts and gas keys, plus they like putting carbine buffers in their rifles when the only reason to do that over an 'H' is to save $10 on the manufacturer's end. That being said they will replace most shit that breaks prematurely.
>Anderson Manufacturing
I've seen some goddamn nightmares out of Anderson manufacturing with out-of-spec trigger pins on their lowers. No reason to get them when better options are only slightly more expensive.
>BCM
I get all my ARs from them thanks to their punctilious QC and barrel profiles. They understand that the primary advantage of the AR-15 over other modern rifle designs is its light weight and soft recoil so they optimize the hell out of their barrel/handguards and drill the gas port properly relative to buffer weight/spring weight. Their 16" ELW rifle comes in at 5.8lbs and handles beautifully. My 11.5" ELW pistol despite having a red dot and a 1000 lumen scout light hanging off the end still balances at the magwell and is only a few ounces over 6lbs. Plus little details like using sprinco extractor springs and how soft the machining on their handguards are, whereas some of the cheaper ones like palmetto's can be a bit sharp.
You might want to look at ALG as well, I get my LPKs from them when they go on sale and they're all super super slick and positive. You'd think trigger pins are trigger pins until you get a nice LPK next to an anderson one. Everything is just more… lubricious, more smooth, the detents seem to click a little more calmly. All the Anderson parts feel rough and porous compared to the luxurious ALG/Geissele ones.
