I was always interested in games. "YOU'RE controlling what goes on on the screen? Sweet!"
Games that family had. Mostly SMRPG and Mario Party, and SimCity 2000.
Got Game Maker and fucked with that for a while, made a dumb little multiplayer platformer with practically no graphics, but tons of guns, bombs, configurable particle tails. Goal was simply to kill each other, maybe eventually build the field ingame with the blocks. Lost that.
Found out about emulators, played some console RPGs on my crappy PC in awe.
Somewhere in 2008 I got into RuneScape. That's the real tumbling point. Having an easy to access chat filled with people from all over, based around a reason to stay logged into it, the game itself.
Early 2009 Someone linked my to 4chan. Or more specifically, an archived r9k thread about the worst shits they'd ever experienced. Fun thread.
From there I navigated to 4chan itself, looked through the topics, found some anime and porn I liked. Then enjoyed consuming all that media.
I shared most of all this with my brother. But he's the one who found and got me into Touhou.
Think it was some pictures of Sakuya he had on his screen, and I was like "Whoa, she look cool. Tell me about this stuff".
Not sure if I ever reached an enlightment[sic] though. Like there's a lot along the way that changed my personality, made me think, and shifted just about everything. But not one individually important enlightenment.
