Hanuman is a tough good guy deity for liberals. Vaishnavis are liberals of the hindu world. They also had to alienate him and make him a monkey in case some of the brutal acts he did could cast a negative shadow on the pure good guy image of the vaishnavis. In which case they could just write it off as monkey being monkey.
