The catching mechanic ruins the game. The motion controls rarely worked properly, especially if the pokemon was outside of the center of the screen. It works a bit better in handheld mode but is still frustrating. The experience gained from catching replacing trainers as the main source of experience also sucked, especially when getting "excellent" catches didn't raise the catch rate at all, or if it did not to a noticeable amount. There were many times where I would get like 4 excellents in a row that missed, only to get it with a throw I messed up on. Getting rid of random encounters in favor of roaming pokemon makes catching pokemon with low spawn rates much more frustrating.
While I do have some other complaints, the rest of the game wasn't that bad, but the new catching system was so integral to the game that it ruins the rest of it. It is the only Pokemon game I found myself not enjoying it more often than enjoying it. If you're enjoying it more than me, I'm glad for you.

Not really when you can buy lures for stupid cheap…
I love the mechanic because you can easily avoid pokemon if you don't feel like catching any and you can engage specific pokemon if you're trying to catch, say, a magikarp
just use lures for low spawn rate ones, I don't see the issue there

Yeah I can understand why you can't enjoy the game if you're unable to overlook the motion control bullshit
