I do say that, and I also see both the students I teach and the ones I went through undergrad with. The one's who aren't ready for the workplace tend to be the ones that just are on for the ride, put in just the right amount of work, and make use of any shortuct they can get. I am not saying our schools are perfect, but especially with university, personal responsibility of the students matters a lot.

I'm implying that colleges don't really teach kids necessary job skills for the future. A slight change in the curriculum and colleges -should- in theory crank out students that are work force ready and skilled in basic work knowledge. WP said that STEM majors usually fared better than their non-STEM counter parts.

Right.
Teach kids skills that make your school competitive in the job market.

My department did based on some outdated requirement from a certain monolithic agency that granted them money. I know EEs and MechEs don't use Matlab all that often.

But either way, one extra skill from a class doesn't keep you from learning something else

We specifically take 4 years for a B.S. when most places are only two or three so someone gets a more broad education. We take the same classes as they do, just some extras along with it.

A dual major is almost always pointless. Having a community that is better educated on a a wider range of basic subjects along with their focus is better.

Depends on what you're going for.
I'm planning to throw this degree in the trash and start again at a different school. In my case, a chemical engineering degree with some background in biochemistry is good for working in pharmaceuticals or some other health related field. But let's see what happens.

"A background in" really only means a minor or an associates. Almost always, the extra time you would spend working on a second major would be better spent doing independant research with a professor or something along those lines to make you stand out to a Masters program. Or really even something you can put forward as real experience when applying for a job.

Oh, I don't care about the degree at all.

So why do it?
This fives itself to the idea that the problem is not the classes which are being taught, it is the personal responsibility of the students.

It's the quickest path to graduation. Plus, I lock in my credits for classes I've taken instead of losing them. When or if I transfer to another uni I don't have to retake classes or lose credit hours that I worked for.

But just getting a degree to get a degree is the opposite of what you do to get a job!
They also don't delete your transcript when you leave, even if you don't graduate you still have the credits. It isn't going to transfer any different if you start a different Bachelors.

Every 4yrs your transcript turns over. Say I drop out of college and wait four years to go back. I have a clean slate and I start all over again. If I transferred to another uni, I would be caught in a cycle of retaking classes that I've already taken. Which set me back far longer than if I lock my hours with a degree. That's why I have an associates degree. I locked in my hours to avoid having to retake my CC classes at uni. Also, I started off in ChE and switched to Biochem. So, I'll have all of the core classes completed meaning that I can go straight into the engineering program and spend less time in classes I've already taken. If things happen and the stars align, I'll graduate in 2 years.

I will trust you with that first part because I don't actually know when the cutoff is.
But why would you wait 4 years to do it? If you weren't into chem it would have been better to just go ahead and switch unless you really only had one semester left when you decided you didn't like it.

Let's say my GPA is REALLY BAD, like 1.2 or .5, recovering from that would be next to impossible. So, fours years is more than enough to allow me time to fix what needs to be fixed and go right back in with a new slate. I only had a semester left before I graduated. So, switching to biochem is a way to lock in my credit hours and not have to worry about them turning over.
