I don't fully expect to get engaged in a full fledged discussion of social psychology when I'm talking about political trends of the left.
Anyways, if you want an explanation. You can think of information silos as hubs that are tailored to specific interests. For instance, if I like quilting, I'm going to be a part of a quilting club. Because there are other people there that share same interests, teach me to become a better quilter or sharing my quilting projects. The issue is when information silos become political and ideological. From an phenomenological perspective, this creates many rifts and fractures that become worse over time. If I'm a liberal, I'll have little to no interests in conservative news or the conservative ideology. The same can be said for conservatives. These sorts of hubs creates a "us versus them mentality" which is a form of primitive psychology called tribalism. For instance, if I'm on r/playstation, I'll believe that playstation is good and that there is no drawbacks to owning a PS4. If I'm a user of r/Nintendo, then I'll believe owning a Switch is good. The believe that my decision is good is further amplified by other users telling me that I made a good purchase and they can tell you what game I should get. But issues become apparent when someone tells me that I made a wrong purchase or how a PS4 is better. I'll defend my purchase along with others in the community. Thus driving my purchase decisions.

Think about elevator talks, they are important.
I don't argue that these don't exist and aren't a problem, but they are lessened by the interconnectivity of the internet and other advances which create an environment where you don't have to be tied to a specific ideology due to isolation. One of the most significant problems with cultural and psych research nowadays is that it often focuses on the worst cases because that is what gets them funding. It is also super easy to make hand-wavy claims because it is impossible to do a real robust study where you control for all or the majority of variables in either of those disciplines.

People like to dismiss psychology and sociology.

When you see starving children in some war torn part of Africa. Your initial reaction is too feel bad for them. Add some Sarah McLaughlin "arms of an angel" and you'll feel really bad and want to help them. But why do you feel such convictions of starving children in Africa?
Why should you care about them?
The answer is, there's an innate drive to help those that are in need of help. If I crank the emotion to 11 that innate drive goes into emotional overload. If you stop to think about your consequences for such actions you might realize that you were being emotionally manipulated into to doing something that you normally wouldn't do or that will be harmful to those children in the long run. The media does the same thing. Think about the last dictator you were angry about. Qaddafi, Assad, Erdogan, Maduro? Noticed all the articles and stories that broke about how awful it was and how those dictators were only evil? Noticed that absurd stories came out about how Maduro had a motorcycle gang beating people up or how the food trucks sent to Venezuela were burned? Maduro was painted as the faceless villain, a villain that was terrorizing his own people just because. This is not an accident, it creates a us versus them mentality when you read those articles. It makes you which that he was gone and disposed of. But if you take a look back. Was he really all that evil as the media painted him?
What happened to the deluge of articles of how evil Maduro was?

Of course the media over-inflates things and abuses you for money, but does that negate the fact that I have the chance interact daily with people from four continents and the other two that matter if I tried? It inherently brings people together and while cooperation is not going to be an easy, fast, or smooth thing, the net benefit cannot be discounted. If you base your world view on what you thin will happen in the next 10 or 20 years you are inherently short-sited and are doing a disservice to both yourself and society as a whole.
Now with psych, I do like to dismiss a significant portion of it. The base ideas behind it are useful, but a lot of the specifics that it tries to push are not supported very well. See: the claim that intelligence is linked to race despite not being able to control any of the studies for the vast majority of extra factors.
You also can't really base things off the news cycle. News companies exist to make money. They won't follow a story for more than a week or two because people will get bored of it.
