The sound design is the only outstanding part of initial D. The overall quality of the show is pretty low, there's never really any interesting cuts, and they re-use a ton of footage especially at the end/beginning of episodes. Shigeno's art doesn't really transfer well to animation, but a lot of his manga panels are pretty bad too.

It was absolute fucking bliss. Yurobeet blaring out from the back, conversations out from the front, actual proper directional moving car noises. Truly an experience to behold. More anime should do surround sound!

Depending on what you mean by this, that's debatable. It's genuinely interesting and entertaining to watch, especially the races. The odd technical detail is nice as well. It's great despite its flaws.

I do admit, the artstyle, especially on the characters, is a little strange. But it wasn't enough to turn me away.
