Nier is fine. People are just harsh. The gameplay isn't 10/10 get out of this world but it decent. I'm a simple man though, so I don't necessarily need a lot to be impressed. As long as it's not broken or unplayable. Of course the game has to have other things going for it too.
Nier did some neat things for me.

Yeah, I certainly enjoyed Xenoblade much more as well. I assume you mean 2, but I would say that for either of them. I can't compare to the original Nier, but none of the characters were particularly great. People only really liked 2B for her ass.

The last stretch was easily the best part of the game. They could've ended it much earlier (albeit with a different, lazier ending where you just defeat (((bad guy))) and it's the end), but they really went above and beyond. Which is what makes it so good. It was really unexpected
