>What is IPFS?
Like bittorrent on steroids. You can do nifty stuff like hosting websites on it, and files are deduplicated so someone downloading a different hypnosis collection can share peers with you if your collections share files.
>What's the catch?
It isn't any more anonymous than bittorrent, so ideally you should run it through a VPN. There aren't many clients yet either.
>What clients are there?
<commandline/reference client
https://docs.ipfs.io/introduction/install/
<ipfs-desktop
https://github.com/ipfs-shipyard/ipfs-desktop
<Orion
https://orion.siderus.io
There's also a really useful browser extension called the IPFS Companion. Install this alongside any other client and it will make your life much easier
Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ipfs-companion/
(((Chrome))): https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ipfs-companion/nibjojkomfdiaoajekhjakgkdhaomnch
>Where can I read more about this?
The website is at https://ipfs.io/ and there's docs at https://docs.ipfs.io/ . >>>/tech/ has a long-running series of IPFS threads too but the board has really gone to shit over the last couple months.
If you guys have any other suggestions or want to discuss stuff like GNUnet, post 'em here.

The problem with IPFS is that it is worse that P2P in term of bandwitch and connections allocation, even if it not uploading/downloading. In many cases it wouldnt matter getting a higher latency and a wasted bitrate of 500kbps but in many others does, not only because latency but because on powered things what most energy wastes is the wifi or other radio com, so keeping it up 100% of the time will drain battery much faster
I dont think it is the solution or a better p2p thing but instead an alternative to that

Some people seem to get higher bandwidth usage than others and I'm not sure why. At least the newer releases are lighter memory and CPU-wise.

> Why not use BitTorrent
Because nobody in this board uses it
> Why not Retroshare
Because it is slow, and discovery (trying to find what you need) is a mess. Also the key system is shit for not using ECC
> Why not Telegram/Discord
Botnets, and they have maximum file sizes
> What benefits does it have
Say someone has uploaded his entire hypnosis collection onto IPFS. Other people sharing their collections on IPFS almost certainly have some of the same files, so you can peer with people seeding different collections if said collections share some files. You can even rename files without breaking this deduplication.
> What downsides does it have
The big thing IPFS is missing right now is I2P support. Aside from that, it's basically torrents on super steroids and the final solution to hypnosis filesharing.
In that case look for https://temporal.cloud/ and https://github.com/RTradeLtd/Temporal (they are making IPFS+I2P software)
> the issue is not file hosting since it can be easily resolved by dmca-resistant hosting sites. using obscure p2p file sharing protocols is really just overkill even though it is a valid solution
The biggest reason people are interested in this shit (aside from the deduplication autism) is because they're tired of … some flavour of the month file hosting service and insisting it won't go down like all the others, which it inevitably does. Since we're looking for the final solution to hypnosis filesharing (likely IPFS over I2P) and not another crappy stopgap website…

Same as Retro

Depends on the amount of sharers, just like Torrents or IPFS.

The search works perfectly in RS. While search does not exist in IPFS.

https://ipfs-search.com/#/search would be a good example
For Retroshare though the UI is not as easy as DuckDuckGo

Torrents are on its way out for being too old, and not having cool features that avoids the "public trackers being shut down" problem
The others are fair though.

Unlike RS, IPFS does not offer any anonymity (just like BitTorrent). So, RS wins here as well.

I was searching for "B4nd13r". The good thing is that the search also looks inside the files, on the other hand, this is the bad thing, as the results are not quite relevant (and no files are available anyway). The option where to look (e.g. title) would help.

Try https://ipfs-search.com/#/search?search=nationalism and you will understand what is missing from the search
I works pretty well for text files, documents and articles, but does not work as well for media files as it only shows the hash.
Will submit an issue to the github though

Can someone try and upload some audio files to IPFS so we can test this out?

Okay so update: >>>/hydrus/ updated their software to allow for better IPFS file transfers (no more copy errors),
and https://github.com/Kycklingar/PBooru now allows for IPFS+TOR/I2P hosting tagged file galleries similar to Danbooru or Gelbooru.
So can the BO please get someone to spin up a PBooru instance so we can all share and manage audio files?

I gotta ask, why not just use i2p and one of its bit torrent clients? Its not exactly hard to setup.

IPFS allows both files and folders to have their own hash, they have better de-duplication of files.

IPFS doesn't have anonymity, in fact currently it doesn't even have Tor support. See https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/6430 . You need a network that supports anonymity from the ground up to prevent censorship/DMCA takedowns/liability, and this is not one of the design goals of IPFS. Retroshare over Tor is currently your best bet, even though it's far from perfect.

RS and Giga are still going strong honestly there's no need to rush into IPFS unless they provide all the necessary features including anon.

I2P does filesharing natively and anonymously. It's got a better network model for large files than Tor, too. The files aren't distributed in the same way as IPFS, but it's (I2Psnark on I2P) more like an anonymous version of Bittorrent.

Adapting I2P with IPFS should be good as in https://github.com/Kycklingar/PBooru (but it would require some engineering)
