there are layer on layers in play here. After all, "5 fun guys" said quickly aloud is "5 Fungi" or 5 toads/mushroom people(mushroom/toadstool/fungi being loosely interchangeable here as an english turn-of-phrase). There's a lot to read into, and this is actually notable inprevious Paper Mario titles as well. In general they are well-translated and a labor of love with some of the extra text added in.
Is it Gamergate? I think so, with carefully masked intentions and false trails.
