This Raspberry Pi alternative has an 8th-gen Intel Core processor and 16GB of RAM, but will cost you almost $800!

> This is a serious board designed for projects such as AI, edge computing, signage, and drones.

> Raspberry Pi boards are great for small projects, and sometimes even larger projects, but some applications need a lot more performance. This is where higher-end boards such as the AAEON PICO-WHU4 come into their own.

> But power and performance doesn't come cheap.

> While a Raspberry Pi 4 comes with a quad-core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC processor running at 1.5GHz and between 1GB and 4GB of RAM, the PICO-WHU4 is more like a high-end PC.

> The tech specs are particularly impressive.

> PICO-WHU4 tech specs:

> 8th Intel Core i5 Processor SoC

> Single non-ECC DDR4 SODIMM slot supporting up to 16GB of RAM

> PICO-ITX form factor

> Dual HDMI 1.4b ports

> GbE x 2

> SATA 6.0 Gb/s x 1

> GPIO x 4

> USB 3.2 Gen 2 x 2 (Rear), USB 2.0 x 2 Pin header, RS-232/422/485 x 2

> Full size mSATA/mPCIe x 1 (Select by BIOS), M.2 2230 (E key) x 1

> 12V Only (Terminal block)

> The price for this is $783.

$783.00

someone please explain to me why I would want this over a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB Ram for $61.00 on Amazon? I can get a dozen Pi4's with that money and build an 11-node cluster

You can get much more power for the price by buying a fucking laptop instead of these stupid hipsterboards. I'd understand if it was using open source hardware or something, but this is just an overpriced botnet.

Well with those specs it has the grunt to run as a low power 4K-capable HTPC, provided the SoC has a built-in GPU for decode; or perhaps as an emulator for arcade games and consoles, for which the ARM-based pi was not that great. But having said that, it's still a rort. It's grossly overpowered for most hobby projects, and grossly overpriced for that market. I honestly don't know who would bother shelling out ~$800 for the thing.

Actually, no, scratch that: I just checked and it's not 4K capable. That requires HDMI 2.0.

Raspberry Pi alternative is the new WoW killer.

An 800$ board is not and can never be a pi alternative, it's obviously a completely different market that this board is aiming at.

It's like calling a Honda Civic a Rolls Royce alternative.

Journo retardation aside, a cluster is harder to manage than a single board. You have to write your code a lot more multiprocess-safe than with a single board to get the same performance, boards are gonna burn out, etc.

That being said, what kind of project would require that amount of power and absolutely demand a small formfactor? At the price, you could easily go for a microATX motherboard and other standard components instead of going for a SoC that locks both you and your code in.

>just to use gpio or some IoT shit when you could do it with ether or serial

>proprietary power supply and graphics

At least it's small but just get yourself a used thin client like Dell Wyse.

A RiscV Pi would be better.

These things can be kinda cool if you're using it as the basis for a custom laptop. The site I'm linking has some examples of what I'm talking about, even if it's fairly gimmicky.

Yeah most of the guys actively working on this stuff are kinda gay, but the idea is cool in concept because you could make a portable computer with a non shit keyboard built in and fairly modern specs. You'd be hard pressed to find a modern laptop with a decent keyboard or really with anything a thinkpad could do. You might be able to find something, but I haven't been able to. Plus I think it's kinda cool to see people make laptops with non standard shells.

Who is going to need this kind of power in such a small form factor?
