Perspective isn't too hard. Make a separate layer and make a vanishing point on the horizon. Then, kinda trace out a "burst" from that point; these become guidelines for other shapes.

What I found to be useful was to draw the flat side of a plane, eg a box, and extrude the corners towards that point, and kind of cut it off a short distance away.

Instead what i do is trace over my original lines on a separate layer. I just didnt do it here since i was practicing perspective.

>>50327

>have you not done your daily 15 minute straight line drawing practice?

I can draw straight lines by drawing from my elbow rather than my wrist it's not the straight lines that are the issue. It's more so my tablet lacks a screen so it's really hard for me to predict where my lines will go just by looking. I've talked to over artists about this sort of thing and they've stated that it's something you eventually just get used to or you buy a cintiq.

drawing short sketchy lines allows me to form a track that I can then create a straight line using. Painters do this all the time, it's called underdrawing.

Too much detail in the lower hand and the pointy finger looks odd, seems like you couldn't decide whether you want the tails to merge or be separate, hair looks like it's made of metal sheets, black shading(?) absent from everywhere except head area, shading doesn't make much sense and is kind of pillow-y, abdomen has a weird bulge where it's supposed to be flat, boobs have a strange shape

That's actually what I was doing

My instructor was telling me it's easy to replicate something if you attempt to replicate the angles of the shape first which is what I tried to do.

The overall lumpiness is probably due to my inexperience with lines.

the face is nicely drawn.

what spoils it, though, is the hair ontop along with the weird shading you've done coupled with the arm.

the hair needs to be scrapped entirely unless you were going for that goku anime hair, but that still looks bad anyway. look up references.

the fingers look wonky, especially the ones on the bottom right - the nails look weird and rushed.

the shading looks out of place compared to the face; either smooth it out or do rimlights as you've done on the snout, otherwise it'll keep looking like something you'd see from a 2004 furry newgrounds flash animation.

kind of unrelated, but for some odd reason, your art style gives off a vibe from a particular artist that i've learned only about a couple of weeks ago - it looks similiar to Henry Darger's :^)

>Aren't you suppose to learn how to do humans first

Yes

Technically you're supposed to know how to draw realistically first and draw what you see accurately.

A lot of artists start by drawing something stylized first which greatly limits their ability later. Even in subtle ways like they continuously only use references and then discover they're incapable of drawing something from memory without a reference.

This is most often seen with artists who start by drawing only anime and then discover they can't draw worth a shit when they get to the actual "getting good" phase they should be at and have to unlearn a lot of what they learned earlier.

>>51756

This is because they didn't learn how to draw humans first.

This is also that they don't want to practice learning how to draw humans so they just half-ass it because it's too stressful to learn from scratch again. And good luck doing anything in art outside of drawing furry characters (like getting a job in art) if you can't draw humans.

>>51853

>You should learn anatomy and construction

>You sound like you may be a beginner artist because that's not how it works

Have you read a book on drawing? 99% of them tell you that you should do this.

>being able to draw boxes, cylinders and spheres doesn't mean you can draw something that looks good.

Being able to draw boxes, cylinders and spheres is necessary in order to learn perspective and foreshortening. You cannot learn these things without being capable of drawing basic shapes in 3D. It's the first step to learning how to draw something that actually looks like it belongs in 3D space. If you don't learn how to do this early on you eventually hit a wall where everything looks flat and you physically cannot draw something that looks 3D.

Learning how to draw basic shapes is also necessary to learn anatomy. Every anatomy text book uses basic shapes as references for learning the human body. And good luck finding someone to commission you if you can't draw the body well. There's a lot of furries who unintentionally limit themselves by not studying this stuff early on and just drawing what they want in the moment. And then they discover "wait I can't draw anything that's not a dog" and get depressed that they're a shit artist when in reality they brought this upon themselves by being lazy.

I'm not arguing that spheres, boxes and cylinders aren't a useful way to learn drawing, as a beginner I myself thought being able to draw cubes and spheres was some sort of super shortcut to becoming an adept at art, after a while though I discovered that this excessive manneqinization of everything was doing more harm than good, everything looked stiff and frozen since it was made out of rigid 3D vectors.

Then I started drawing shapes, instead of objects, naturally this made everything look more natural and lively, and sometimes I even found that I got better results just drawing directly instead of starting out with a base shape when drawing certain things.

By all means it's useful to think in 3D objects when you're a beginner and don't know what you're doing, but if you get the monkey on your back that everything needs to be broken down into basic shapes, you'll be harshly limiting yourself, because nature gave us more shapes than just circles, boxes and cylinders, a good example of this is the thigh, if you try to draw it as a cylinder or a drumstick, it looks terrible, because the human thigh has its own unique shape that you'd be hard pressed to break down into the aforementioned 3. Some things, like hair, also simply can't be manneqinized.

And it's not like it's impossible to learn anything new once you get past a certain age, if you expect to ever be able to draw everything that comes to mind flawlessly on the first attempt you may be disappointed, if a seasoned artist finds himself unable to draw or paint something he has no experience with, he simply has to experiment and LEARN how to do it, and considering at this point he has such high skill in learning art, it shouldn't be a big problem.

You're not supposed to just draw shapes, you just need to get really good at actually drawing them first and then use that as a springboard. Without doing this you run into problems.

>I even found that I got better results just drawing directly instead of starting out with a base shape when drawing certain things.

This is only because, after learning how to draw the shapes you were able to properly visualize it. Without drawing the shapes first you end up with very 2D and disproportionate art.

>if you get the monkey on your back that everything needs to be broken down into basic shapes

The problem is a huge amount of furry artists never learn this sort of stuff. Pointing out "this is how you should learn to draw" isn't a criticism of artists who eventually learned to visualize drawing forms after practice

>if you try to draw it as a cylinder or a drumstick, it looks terrible, because the human thigh has its own unique shape that you'd be hard pressed to break down into the aforementioned 3

I think you're confusing the idea behind drawing in basic shapes first. Another aspect to it is the concept of enveloping. Which is subtracting the space you aren't using so you can then further modify the drawing to suit what you need. You can very easily break down the thighs as cylinders to start off with and then further redraw the form to something more natural later.

>Some things, like hair, also simply can't be manneqinized.

Hair is detail which comes well after drawing the form. This is another mistake a lot of new artists make which is they attempt to detail the figure first before finishing the rest of the form.

>And it's not like it's impossible to learn anything new once you get past a certain age

It's not so much that, drawing is very habit forming and artists eventually start to learn bad habits like they always draw a face exactly the same way every time because that's just what they're used to. Nailing the basics of just the process early on, saves a lot of time awkwardly attempting to draw things later and wondering why everything you make looks exactly the same or doesn't look as good as you want it.

>he simply has to experiment and LEARN how to do it

I think you're expecting too much from furry artists, you'd be surprised how many furry artists refuse to draw specific things like

>I cant draw women

>No human bodies

>No perspective

This also gets into learning the process first since it saves a lot of anxiety later when you get to the "got gud" phase and you have less limitations imposed on you.

>considering at this point he has such high skill in learning art, it shouldn't be a big problem.

There's a lot of even famous artists who only drew 1-2 specific things really well. Like Bob Ross for instance only painted landscapes and very specific ones he remembered in Alaska. You never saw him paint a person or anything in the painting just the landscape and it was rare you saw him paint something that didn't feature a tree or a mountain

It's actually pretty easy to keep using basic shapes as guides when sketching out a drawing without being hamstrung by them, just draw over top - you can use colour pencils, different pencil grades, erase the lines as you go, or work digitally in layers - the shapes are just guidelines to make sure all the basic forms are there, and THEN you can draw the details (excuse the shitty example doodle). It isn't just a beginner practise, most professional artists - most artists with any skill in general, for that matter - do this because it helps with proportions, perspective and laying things out without committing to details. Watch almost any decent artist streaming from the start, and they'll likely start with some simple shapes and guidelines for objects and characters.

Jumping from blank page to finished product with no guidelines, underdrawings or thumbnails is not a requirement to be "good" at art, that's an exception, not the rule.

You might see videos where an artist will draw from nothing at all, but this is basically just a stunt: if it's completely straightforward, you're seeing someone who is incredibly good at visualization, they might have drawn this subject hundreds of times already, and usually, they've had decades of practise. There also might be all kinds of editing trickery or artistic shortcuts, the video might be sped up to look more impressive (or just save the viewers' time), they might be tracing from an earlier drawing, there could be a pile of failed attempts in the bin off screen. You only see what gets shown.

He's not saying that. He's referring to it being very important to starting a drawing off and building upon it later. It's like building the frame of the house first before putting the windows in place. You wouldn't say "there's more to nice looking architecture than a bunch of wooden frames"

Start by drawing reality, and only after you've fully mastered that attempt to stylize it. Otherwise you'll pigeonhole yourself into only being able to draw anime style, and nothing else.

My whole point was that the information based on real life is conflicting with the "anime" style, thus I no longer understand how to draw it. When I try to apply real anatomical information to anime eyes, it doesn't work at all. It's as if anime is 100% style and not based on reality at all.

If you can draw realistic eyes, you should be able to draw anime eyes. Just remove most of the detail and make them more round and open.

Or google "how to draw anime eyes" and look at the fifty bazillion step-by-step "tutorials". Just don't walk in here asking for advice and then lash out like a asshole because your request is so bizarre and inane that nobody can understand it. The real problem you're having is that every anime has a different "style" because it's based on a manga by a different artist. There is no universal governing method between how they are drawn. What you're asking is like asking "how do I copy someone else's style of eyes?" to which is the answer is "you don't!". Instead, experiment with drawing stylized and detail-less eyes, on your own, until you find a design that you like and that you can easily and quickly replicate.

Also, the majority of furry art is in "anime style" because that's the extent of the skill set of most furry artists, who are still drawing symbols. But if you can draw realistic, or even just "realistic style", your work will be in high demand as it's rare, and you can potentially charge more. It's not by any means a drawback.

Not necessarily. If you want to jump straight into drawing furries there’s nothing wrong with it. Yes learning construction first is recommended, and so is anatomy.

But yes you will eventually need to learn how to draw ferals and humans from scratch if you want to broaden out. Normies don’t have this issue because they draw humans 90% of the time and only need to learn few things outside of that like common pets or maybe fantasy creatures.

The art is good but holy fuck you artists have the most retarded "signatures." Just use the text tool and wrote it in the corner or something. At least make it legible. The worst is when people use logos or symbols instead of actual names, how the fuck am I supposed to know about who drew it if it was the first time I've ever seen it and don't know who drew it?

What do you mean? The artist's name is very clear, it's: ƈIJβᖍ˥ᐦ

On a serious note though, I agree with you 100%. The point of putting your name on your work isn't to "mark your territory" in some fashionable way, it's to allow viewers to find you if they happen to find your art posted on a different website than your gallery. Make this as easy as possible. Nobody ever complained about a signature being too legible.

Make sure your brushes have antialiasing. Unless you're working below 1k I don't know why you'd ever have an issue with your work being "pixely". Might be some weird brushes/settings?

Start big, get smaller over time.

Won't ever need more than 5k unless you're doing like, a fuckin' huge mural or something.

And even then, while it doesn't hurt to start big (you can always start big and go small via resampling, but can't go small and go big), you can get away with working in a 1-2k setting if you're doing anything but rendering.

As a side note, don't be that guy who uploads his cellshaded drawing in 4k resolution. The only time you should upload anything that big is if you're Craig Mullins-level of rendering (and even then it's overkill).

I more meant that there's very few cases were people will ever be viewing your art at max resolution.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of people don't care. They'll look at it from a thumbnail or they'll click and enlarge it to whatever resolution the website scales it to, but past that nobody cares, not even other artists.

There's no reason to view nearly any art piece at its full resolution. There's not new information to be gained from it, so looking and saving at lower res versions is just fine. The only exception I can think of is if you're making a wallpaper or plan to print it.

It's pretty decent, but the lines and shading make it seem more like it's an Umbreon of matte latex. There could be some more color definition in vulva and pucker to make them look just a little better.

Forelegs look rather long, and the chest region seems just a smidgen thin.

I'm still a beginner but my friend got me to at least participate a little bit in inktober. So far it's pretty fun seeing parts of the drawing pop out though I need a lot more practice to learn what lines to omit or stress, aside from all the fundamentals I'm still working to develop. Mostly just doing hand studies and inking over them, but third is a furry thing (w/o reference, I know a lot is wrong with it) I did for fun.

I did a tiger for Day 3. I'm not sure if I handled the edges of the fur well enough. I think I could have probably taken more liberal, larger tufts with the pen, as opposed to the smaller, scattered lines? I'm not sure what would have looked better. Other than that, I notice I ended up making the muzzle a bit too box-like, particularly towards the bottom, and I totally forgot to pen the whiskers.

Thanks for replying! I was getting scared that I would get completely ignored.

I probably should have specify when I asked about vag, that my dream is to start doing commissions. Because of that I'm trying to be conscious of what would make me popular. Do you think it's a bad idea?

By the way, have you thought about spending more than a day on one of your drawings? It's clear that you put a lot of effort into them, but IMO they would look even better if they were redone with smooth, clean lines.

Days 4&5. Another hand and a two personal figures. I feel very strongly about the hand outside of making a serious mistake with a tone on one of the fingers - blocking the hand in and working out the shapes came very quickly for me - nearly a third of the time spent on it compared to my day 1 work.

The personal drawings were for fun, and they're my favourite designs I've created thus far (with the most defined style I've had), but I'm also really noticing the difference in scope between having a reference and not when I'm working with ink. I'm much more confident and defined with my lines with referenced works because I know precisely what it looked like, whereas making (educated and uneducated) guesses for non-referenced works leaves me with less focused line weights. I tried to block in shadows from imagination and if nothing else it certainly makes the image pop out much more relative to just my pencil sketch.

A plague on most furry art. If you wanted to post more WIP stages to the process, it would be great. Looks like more aggressive foreshortening and perspective in earlier basic shape stages, and more contours than most people do. But for all I know there's some perspective tools you're using or you just developed a really damned good eye for 3D space. I'm not sure I could nail it even with a 3D model to reference.

I got a tablet so now I can draw digitally, and I think my year of traditional work has shown a lot of results. I'm quite proud of my line control, and more importantly where I'm not good yet I know how to actually learn from what I'm doing. I need a lot more practice with colouring, though.

It's manual handdrawn perspective. The reason for the aggressive foreshortening is because I place the vanishing points to where I can see them canvas. I wanted to learn how to do it manually because I wanted to be an animator who didn't want to be slowed down by digital tools. Although the digital grids are more accurate, they don't really become helpful when you want to change the camera. A lot of people resort to using 3d for this reason.

it's not so bad for inanimate objects, but when i try to make anything living and fail i feel a terrible disgust and have to destroy the image.

is it just a matter of figuring out a hacky way to ensure every attempt, even when i fail (i.e. derpface cat with a dog nose in hieroglyphic perspective), doesn't fail abhorrently (neck at weird angle, uneven arm lengths "screwed with the perspective settings in blender" perspective.)?

your line art is actually crazy; very well done so far. i wouldn't worry too much about the dialogue since porn dialogue usually isn't memorable at all unless it is dumpster fire quality.

i really like all your proportions too, and the posing is really natural. some bits seem kind of 'stapled on' if that make sense. some places in particular are the crotch, chest tuft, and neck fur. they don't really flow as well with the human parts.

this is honestly 8/10 for me already personally so i'm eager to see what the finished version looks like

the shading on this is beautiful, great work anon. i think you nailed the hands too, especially her right hand. the texture you created with it on the chest is very nice.

not sure if you'd be willing to fix much at this stage construction wise but if you want some criticism I will point out that the hips are a little odd. perhaps it is just that the pelvis is front facing when the pose suggests a bit of an angle opposite the chest.

that's all that really sticks out to me though. excellent work, can't wait to see the finished product.

>>116755

Damn, those are really nice. You've spend a lot of time studying anatomy, haven't you?

Anyway the way I blend is by using "Blender_Blur" brush in Krita (the one with the icon of a cotton swab). You just use it on the edge and watch as magic happens. I tried finding an alternative in Photoshop, but I haven't found anything as good. The closest tools were blur tool (which wasn't nearly strong enough) and smudge tool (which blurred the edge just fine, but at the same time moved it quite a bit which made things harder).

When rendering I try not to move terminator too much (since I already established where it should be earlier) and to remember that the softer, gentler transition between values, the softer and more round the form is. I think I overdid it slightly on this example - those hard muscles now look soft-ish.

I love airbrushes. When I use hard brushes it's usually only to add occlusion shadows, like I showed on the picture.

So yeah. Basically just blend it with a blender brush and use softer brushes. Sorry if it wasn't that helpful.
