Alright, so this is an art thread. Share your art, shill your commissions, offer art trades, give advice, ask for advice about your art, ask for resources you need to advance, ask for what types of resources you'd need to advance, share exercises, share inspiring music or inspiring artists, or anything else related to the creation of visual art! Don't know what to draw? Take some requests in our Draw Thread.

Other 3D guy here.
Do I rig my models? It depends. If it doesn't need to animate then it's a waste of time, I can do posing without a rig.
If it does need a rig, then yes, it's quite tricky to build a proper rig. Although there's automatic rigging scripts to aid you in the process, they're useless if you don't know how to rig yourself in the first place.
For game model replacers, you're in luck, because you must use the same rig the developers used, unless you want to redo all the animations aswell (even then, it's still probably going to fuck itself at some point if you use a different rig). So the hard part for you is going to be having good topology and skinning the new geometry with the old bones.
No.28564
>>28562
Wait, isn't rigging the same thing for posing?
No.28578
>>28564
No, not necessarily. I'm talking about animation-ready rigs.
zbrush lets you deform the model via a simplified rig, which is more than enough to strike a pose. The raptor fellow here >>27429
was posed that way.
No.28579
>>28564
not the 3d anon but no it isntzbrush has transposing which doesnt take any rigging what so ever, and if you want to actually do a good job in a normal 3d program rigging is a whole mess of things like needing proper weight on the bones and making sure the skin isnt tearing vertices when you try to make a pose with it.
No.28583
Just about done. I'm not sure if I'll bother putting more effort on the anons.
How does it look?
No.28586
I'm looking for artists willing to draw from reference. Absolutely no deviation or "making it your own" through "stylization". Line for line the exact character in a pose I want.
So far, I have three people in mind that are willing to do this.
But adding more to my list of possible buys is always good because you never know, they could be dead tomorrow.
Anyone here fit this criteria or know someone who does?

Honestly, it's getting easier, especially with auto rigging scripts that now do a huge chunk of the work for you. But of course if you want the best results you do it by hand.
Like the other anons were saying you can make a very simple rig in zbrush just to pose your character, or make a more complicated one for use in games/animation/etc.
A rig is essentially three things, a skeleton comprised of bones, which create the framework and tell the computer where the model should bend and where it shouldnt - the skin, which tells the computer which parts of the model should stretch and compress, and how closely they follow the bones - and finally fancy rigging tools that use math and other stuff to make legs or arms automatically work as a whole instead of moving the thigh, then the lower leg, then the foot, you can just move the foot and the rest of the leg follows suit.
The fancy rigging stuff is optional, but it makes life easier when doing lots of animations. Setting up the bones is simple enough, skinning gets a little tedious, but following some tutorials you should be able to make a simple rig without too much pain if you have experience with 3d software.
Like the other anon said though, if you're modding or replacing game characters you have the bones all set up, you just have to skin them to your new model, which if your new model is vastly different from the old one, you will likely get some funky problems!
Thanks for the comments, I'll tweak the face a bit

That last thing "drawing pringles" seems hard as fuck with a mouse or a pen, but I can do it literally effortlessly with the tip of my finger. I don't. I'm just saying it's a hell of a lot simpler to fine-control the tip of your finger (which you have been doing all your life) than learn how to use a pen as an "extension of your body" at the same level of intuitive simplicity.

sure i see your point. you could always try to hold the pen vertical close to your finger instead of holding it the way you were taught to hold a pencil. i know some artists that do that for a more precise result but you gotta unlearn the old way, and it takes more effort to maintain it.

Well, you should already know where the lightsource is going to be in the sketching/construction. By the time you get to inking that should just be reinforcing it, allowing you to place the thicker portions where the shading will already be.

Let me tell you a little story
Back in january I was at a family reunion, there I got in touch with like my dad's cousin or something, turns out he went to art school together with my dad and is a pretty accomplished artist.
Having gone to art school though he only ever paints weird abstract shit, we went around and discussed art, he showed me some of his paintings that were hung around on the walls in his home, we discussed things like art mediums, figure drawings and the like, turns out he had no experience with a tablet
Anyway, as the party dragged on he suggested he come over to my city sometime so we can look at each other's work, probably while sitting in a coffee shop or something, in the 6 months since he hasn't called but ever since that night I've had some mild anxiety he'll head on over, I really have never drawn anything I'd like to show anyone who isn't a weirdo on the internet but if he decides to come here I really don't have much of a choice, I'll have to pull out my degenerate anthro internet drawings.
I'm actually in really deep shit, fuck.

So I scaled back after the ribcage catastrophe, this time around I decided to do plump subject to see how that would work since I've never done an overweight figure.
Boned in as normal, did her at "fit" proportions, then layered the additional weight over top to ensure the anatomy would fit.
Hair ticked me off though. For the life of me I can't make "shiny hair" work. :/

No.31978
>>31976
For the shoulder, she's leaning/sitting on her right hand so the arm is being pulled down, which is why it's angled like that.
On the shading, maybe softening the light? I could also kill the tuft of hair - it's not shaded at all correctly, it would technically be flat dark with the frontish-above light source. Thoughts?

Can it be cleaned up and fixed? sure, and if thats your method youre happy with then fine but even the sculpters like approach can still get more efficient or clean results if you make bolder marks. the beginning sketch phase should have marks to inform you or remind you on your next step making it easier in the long run.

>I can't find much on sculpting full bodies in blender
It's simple, really. You don't sculpt full bodies in blender. You don't sculpt at all in blender. You don't do very much in blender at all except maybe some hard surface modeling. You mentioned zbrush, use that instead. And as good practice, don't search things like "how to sculpt full bodies in blender". Search instead "how to sculpt in blender" to learn the commands (god forbid you actually do it for blender sculpting, out of all things) or "how to sculpt [thing]" to learn the technique. Applying the same technique to different software is what skill is all about except fucking blender, jesus.
Also, don't have all the reference views on one pic, moving the model around to match. Instead, keep the model centered at the world origin and cut the reference image into multiple images, loading them accordingly into separate views. Even better, load them onto image planes so you can even use a single view if you're short on screen space.
Also, I would model the purple glove separately from the body.

I'm just going to drop in because the advice given here seems hostile.
First off, it's awesome that you're trying out closeups, comics, and difficult poses. It'll be a little wonky at first, but you're guaranteed to get better with them. It's way better than doing 3/4ths or frontal shots most of the time because you're training with all of your fundamentals. I went to do oekaki because I wanted to experiment more without having to worry about the end result, but what you're doing is better.
I don't think that anatomy is the issue as you know here your muscle placements are, but it wouldn't hurt to know more of it so that you can get freedom with body types.
You might be actually struggling with proportions, or how a body or head is evenly divided. You do have the head evenly divided into thirds, but the entire head seems to end at the hairline as opposed to the top of the head. What helped me the most with it were drawing the plates from the Gottfired Bammes book.
I don't think that quality matters whenever it comes to a comc anyway, it's speed and content.

Seriously, it's not like any piece of drawing warrants an "elaborate critique", especially those like these, which would mean several lengthy posts of pointing out each major and minor flaw.
You can't expect someone to point out each spot where color goes outside the boundaries, each smear in the linework, each spot where the shading wasn't smoothed properly or that the toes weren't separated and are just yet another bunch of line smears. Those are just laziness on the artist's part.
Just like you can't point out each flaw in the anatomy when a simple "go back studying anatomy" suffices.

I agree that it's good to practice, but it's not a good idea to do it without direction. You're likely to form wrong solutions when you're trying to solve an issue aimlessly.
You don't need several posts to state that he needs to utilize line weight and form while posting infographics that support your claim. With regards to lineart, lines are more thicker in the shadow more than they are in the light. If you can't break it down like I did in my previous sentences, then you don't know much. Maybe you do, which is why it's crucial to be constructive so that you and everyone else can parse that information easily.
No.37468

I don't think I've ever claimed to be better than anybody here. That's something you made up. Even then, that's hardly relevant. Yet again, I don't have to prove anything. Not to you, not to anyone else.
And sorry, but when someone comes in with a generic "please give critique" and presents a supposedly finished piece without even bothering to clean up the linework nor not color outside the boundaries, that's just insulting. Don't even try convincing me that's something someone else has to point out for him to notice.

He's clearly journeyman level, he probably doesn't know how to do those things yet, regardless, just talking shit about it isn't helpful, the whole point of asking for criticism is to get other people to notice flaws that you don't, imagine if everyone was an elitist like you who goes "bah, this shoddy art is too INDECENT to even acknowledge, furthermore a scalding is in order!", instead of being a prick, bestow your knowledge upon others, and if you can't do that, don't just say it's an unspecified type of "bad" you won't elaborate on.
It's kind of sad how you actually have valid criticisms to give it, like that with the unclean lineart, which means you could have pointed that out, but you instead consciously made the decision to react in this manner. Maybe you should've just directed him to the posts about lineweight in this thread and told him to try harder on drawing toes? Sure would be more helpful than concluding it's too shitty for you to pay any attention to, and do you actually feel legit insulted someone could post art you personally consider subpar?
No.37478

>He's clearly journeyman level, he probably doesn't know how to do those things yet
Erasing chicken scratches is only a matter of picking the eraser and patience, not advanced knowledge, same as erasing color smeared outside the lines, same as smoothing muddy color strokes. Not doing chicken scratches in the first place is a matter of practice.
It's not insulting because it's subpar, it's insulting because it shows laziness on his part. Tell me why one should spend time critically analyzing the work of someone which shows he doesn't even have the patience to polish his work before presenting it. Why would he have the patience to improve it?

Have you considered the fact that it was a WIP or sketch? Not every piece you make has to be refined, you just have to draw consistently so that you can eventually create refined material off that bat. There's a reason why we do rough material like gesture drawings to improve our figures and speed paintings to improve our rendering.
Again, you're missing the overall point. Critique isn't meant to only help that anon, it's meant to help you and everyone else who potentially has that issue. You're doing a disservice by being arbitrarily agitated by those issues that you deem minor. In the long run, it's not going to help you because you're not breaking down those issues to avoid them.

Sketches don't get colored and shaded.
Sketches don't get critiques.
Because they're sketches.
Who's to say that a flaw is due to it being unfinished or an actual flaw the artist overlooked?
Therefore, critiquing sketches is an exercise in futility, unless the artist warns beforehand that they're aware of the imperfections that are due to it being still a work in progress which are gonna be fixed down the line. Even then, you can ask for specific advice, not a general critique. You're just asking to be shot down otherwise.

It's the biggest issue I have. I know, but I have no idea how to solve it. I always end up having to maniacally paint gradients or be stuck with sharp value shifts all over the place.
Then I look at other work and see that it looks like they painted shadows/highlights/whatever with single fucking strokes yet they work. Of course they don't end up looking muddy, but fuck me how does that work.

soft brushes, mixerbrush or smudge. if youre a photoshop user. texture will come later on. probably wasnt the best video i could find for it but I see your issue being the soft falloff of light.
No.39773

I do use the smudge and soft brushes, but if I overdo the smudge, it looks fake as fuck. And it still doesn't really solve the problem of how some paint shit with few strokes and you don't even notice it unless you focus your attention specifically.
Plus, low opacity brushes tend to create those lovely unwanted areas where the strokes overlap and increase/decrease the values where you didn't intend them to. Still better than using 100% opaque brushes but damn if it isn't a pain fixing them. Because paint over and now you have two new areas you have to fix, repeat ad infinitum.
My issue is with technique, really. And I find most infographic/tutorials don't ever mention a shred of technique. Just "Start with this, then work to have this other thing. How? Figure it out yourself, lol."

You jumped to coloring too early, tbh you should have tried to fix areas up with redrawing them. Clothing and detail goes over the form, so if your form is messed up the clothing will look like it too. POOL'S CLOSED
Architect of the /fur/ artdoc here.
Because the BO here is cancer who reverted back to his controlling tendencies, I can't support this board anymore and so I'm closing access to the megaguide link in the OP.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Woa9Lv-_ji33ZeZH2wObqnu4S9RhRPDLMASEzTZmOz8/edit#
I've created various /fur/ oc for close to a year, but I wont be making any more. I stopped drawing Bill because it's a dishonest representation as a mascot and im an honest guy, Bill Katt is chill and Kemo is playful but this board is anything but that, so it's not appropriate. If I draw them again, it will be disassociated from /fur/ since I basically created them both... before I saw the ugly underbelly of the board. Like the other anon who created f8th and k8 who left for greener pastures, so too do I.
Having spent nearly a year watching the board from the inside, I can say its just pent up pretentious assholes. So the board can have the Bushy and n8 leftovers instead. I would be doing a new full painting for the ArtThreads OPs and celebrations like when I did the Christmas and New Years, but i wont be doing any of that anymore either.
Why?
Because there's nothing here to worth celebrating, not the anniversary and not the merger, theres just a constant repulsive elitist circlejerking attitude about /fur/ while everyone who put the board on the map is bitter and outcasted. I wanted this board to succeed but this board was a huge failure that was handed the front page and about a hundred users it didnt earn, used them and then discarded all of them for its own suffocating pursuit, effectively killing all the board activity and it's only in a comatose state now. It has a clean exterior with a festering interior, and the elitism of /fur/ vs /furry/ of treating /furry/ users as second class citizens with no rights? It never stopped and goes all the way to the top, the active mods hate /furry/ users and would rather hemorrhage user activity and burn everyone than find some common ground because they have an undeserved monopoly on a furry board for the front page. I used to be one of them but I wash my hands of it now.
No one's improved here since the ArtThreads began so I guess that was a failure too, but a good try. This is my last post in any of the art related threads. I did For anons looking for advice in a long while, potentially for good. To the anon from Art2.0 who hoped the threads would never change, and continue to have the best feedback you could find? Sorry that's probably over now, and this thread will just stagnate like the rest of the board. I had many more things to share but it looks like having bootlickers is more important than honesty, supporting reasons to come back to the board, and generating actual interest for new users.
Seeya, and good luck with your art adventures anons,

I think you're unfairly hard on Bell. The purpose of those generals weren't to be controlling, but to increase board activity as we have a low userbase. I also don't see the elitism aimed at /furry/ users, I've only seen comments aimed about Puppysky by a single user for not protecting the board.
I'm willing to admit that I'm abrasive myself and I need to cool down. If going to different places makes you feel better, then I don't oppose you for it, but we'll still try to continue on.
No.40236
>>40202
It's obvious you're upset with the BO and the direction the board is heading, but that does not excuse you from derailing the art thread with drama. If you're going to vent then do it in the meta thread or go to greener pastures like you said you would.

Artists still hang around here. I've been here and at /furry/ since early 2016. The issue lies in the fact that this place doesn't facilitate art at all. Here are the sources of inspiration:
<Board tans, of which only N8 K8 and F8h are even halfways decent
<Request thread, where you get to pick between Nickelodeon show requests or drawing someone's Animal Jam fursona
<CYOA threads which never end well
<Or anonymous hate or parody art which isn't even allowed here since anything slightly political gets shut down by Bell.
No new banners, this board still doesn't have a fucking spoiler image even for fucks sake. I save my art for Furaffinity and Inkbunny where I can make money and actually draw with purpose. I do request sketches here for warmups or the rare chance I see something interesting, but every day I am here shows me this is a place for shitposting, not art. And I prefer it that way, if people start waving their art dicks around then we just have a big circle jerk like FA where peoples opinions are judged by their body of work instead of their own merits. Salos (you) is a perfect example of, for instance, how Kayla Na or Jigglebones would be treated if they were forced to talk with just their shitty autistic opinions. And I prefer that. Its okay if a place isn't for art. I am more than happy to draw things for this board when I get the urge but I won't force drawings in with a crowbar just to give this place more art.
Rant over. Here is a request someone gave me on telegram so I am contributing. He has joints and shoulder pads because he's made from wood and is a synthetic tanuki golem made to help a rice farmer in ancient Japan. Just one of many requests that are way too cool to be seen anywhere near this board's request thread.

nah, just those for now. I work with a ton of layers so it's easy to try a lot of things without fucking everything up. Probably going to do some painterly stuff for a bit so I can come back to this later with a set of fresh eyes and fix some mistakes I can't see now.
also, I can't paint to save my life so I'd like to work on that.

I'm using a decent Thinkpad with Krita to take to drawing with, but using the mouse is so unintuitive. I'm looking to get a Wacom medium sized tablet, but I wonder if I should just stick to the mouse and just get a hold of the basics first instead.
No.49413
>>49412
nah, you'll need a wacom tablet or something with a screen and pressure sensitivity. If not you're better off getting the basics down on pencil and paper. Make sure to read your loomis.

funny thing is I think we're making her way more vanilla than she was intended to be. She comes across as a bit of a slutty bitch in her official art, but I like stern woman with a heart of gold better.

It's fine as to the lines; it just lacks any sort of depth. Some shading to indicate the bulges of the outer labia would largely fix this.
